Angel gets up from brooding her chick and leaves the nest and the little hatchling is looking around hoping for a feeding. Tom comes to the nest and sees his chick for the first time. It is a real nail-biter moment for sure as he looks at the chick and then kicks it with his talons and is confused as to whether this is prey or his own chick. Tom is inexperienced and is guided by instincts at the moment - he pulls some of the fluff off the chick as he continues to investigate. Tom then decides to try and brood for about 7 seconds but gets back up and starts to pick at the baby - actually pulling it up by the head and then letting go as the chick falls back to the nest cup.
Thankfully Angel returns to the nest screaming and Tom being even more conflicted by her actions leaves the nest tree. The baby is okay and Angel then took over brooding. That was really tense watching Tom interacting with his chick. First time parents are not always successful with their young. Angel's priority right now is protecting her chick and hoping that Tom will bring food back to the nest. The chick has consumed the yolk sac from the eggshell and it okay with out food for 24-72 hours. We have to hope for the best that Tom will figure out his parenting role. Talons crossed for our sweet Angel and baby! Thank you for watching!
