Thank you for sharing, Mr Williamson! I just got into the hobby 5 months ago and you have been, by far, the best & largest influence on my fish keeping. Definitely gonna be looking into making a dedicated Angelfish biotope tank for my next setup. Take care brother keep it up!

Totally. The fact that they abstractly understand that the insects don't disappear, but are simply on the top of the floating plants... that's more intelligent than a 18 to 24 month old human ...peekaboo! Where did baby go? ...there he is!

I had some swordtails learn to do this when I was feeding wingless fruit flies just to try something new. Stopped feeding them because some would always escape somehow and i was finding them on the other side of my house, but its an interesting way to feed. Some of them would survive on the duckweed/frogbit layer for weeks before a swordtail found them and flooded their leaf.

I also noticed with my one pair of angels That I throw bunch of ants in aquarium and then ants also travel from water surface to red root floaters and my angel fish know that ants only have one way to go so they also pull the floaters down and then pick up the ants So hilarious to watch that fish can do like this 😂 Absolutely love the way nature works

I’ve seen 3 Oscars in a tropical pond herd guppies and platys into a tight school against the side of the pond, working together similar to the same way orcas do, the Oscars would then dive in with mouths ready.

So cool! Cichlids are smart! I miss having angels now. Gee, thanks. 😉 I had aphids show up in 2 of my tanks this past Winter. My Betta and white clouds would gladly gobble them, but I had to daily knock them into the water. My CPD tank, well, they weren't as bright. I ended up having to remove my Salvinia to eliminate the aphids.

Beautiful content. Aphids are a delight and an intelligence trigger for several species. I suggest you observe black widow/skirt tetras; their behaviour is just mind boggling when things travel close to the surface. In addition they have a great memory and immediately react to whatever reminds them of happy times lol

I have always thought that most animals are much more intelligent than we humans give them credit for. I more or less proved it with my duck and my goose. I have also similar behaviour with my gudgeons. Most of the time there aren't any bugs on my floating plants, but once in a while a spider, or some other equally unfortunate creature will land on the lilies or floaters on the tank that my gudgeons are in, and one of them will come out of the water and knock the bug into the water for the other to eat. It's usually the male doing the work, an his lady getting the reward. I'm tempted to get some wingless fruit flies to put in there for them to work on, but I'm a bit reticent because I don't want a fruit fly infestation in my home. My flapshell turtle is an only child, but when he hunts crawdads, there's a definite method to his madness. He doesn't like to be out of the water, but when the crawdads are out and about, he'll climb up on his rock, which he actually positioned where it is for the purpose, then stick only his face in the water, and wait for a crawdad to come out from under the log that is in the tank. When that happens, he pounces off the rock faster than you would assume he could move, and about a quarter of the time, he has lobster dinner. He doesn't care for drawn butter, and just crunches it up raw and swallows. I don't thing the crawdad has time to know what's happening. The crawdads hide under the log, and they reproduce in there, which means there's always a steady supply of crawdads to hunt for. Needless to say, it's a very enriching thing which makes him a happy turtle even if he doesn't catch anything. Always be good to your pets, and also to wild animals. You never know which ones might be sentient, and which ones might be self aware.

Could You advise on how to transport a natural aquarium without disturbing the substrate during the move?
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 месяца назад
The only real way, is to pour out all water to Substrate level. Leave the Substrate and maybe half an inch of water. Then pack the tank with packing pillows or Styrofoam/anything soft but somewhat sturdy. Keep it above freezing and get water oxygen rich water/ fill and add airstone for a day or two- back in the tank again ASAP but within 72 hours seems to work as a general rule. Suction cup movers for glass panels are available on Amazon,com and really help with super heavy tanks.
