I've been using OsmAnd it is much less expensive or free depending on what you need compared to OnX. I use it camping in NMW and it has been a very good mapping solution. But you still need the NMW paper map and check the website / checkpoint for the latest closures. OnX and OsmAnd don't do a good job with closures in NMW. Your comment on cell service is underrated. Cell phones are useless if you need service; download your maps and make sure it is the detailed version. Some other important things to remember in NMW. Ignoring the logging trucks for a moment, don't do that they are lethal get out of their way. Driving in early am or late evening as animals move is extra dangerous. The if you haven't seen what happens to an F150 sized truck when it hits a moos at 30mph. It can and often does disable your vehicle and could kill you. Hunt with a rifle not your truck. You are not in a place you want a disabled vehicle even under the best circumstances. O and on driving, don't park on the roads EVER. If you do have to pull off do it on a long section where you can see and be seen. The roads are mostly narrow and logging trucks are wide and heavy. A logging truck can't stop fast and you are risking the drivers life and your own. Bring a MURS radio and pay attention to the trucks warnings. If your driving with other vehicles, have radios and use them. Keep a good long distance between vehicles. Don't loos a wind screen because you were following to close. This is especially true in very dry weather dust can be a big problem. Mud glorious mud, It isn't deep but it is slick as snow. Have a full sized spare tire or 2. Tip for avoiding punctures, don't hit the brakes hard if you can avoid it. Slow down you'll get there faster if you don't have to change a tire. The fractured bedrock the roads are made of is like razor blades to light vehicle tires. Make sure you have a good jack and a pad/bit of wood for it, mud glorious mud. Fuel, bring extra! Shes not screwing around on that one. The distances you can drive are amazing! Bring a blow torch for lighting fires, there is no point in playing boy/girls scout when your cold and want to warm up. Wet wood is the devil to light a propane torch makes easy work of it.

Awesome job with the information! May I ask for one additional thing that would be helpful for you to share, especially for moose hunting. The past three years we’ve been lucky enough to be able to hunt in the NMW, and each year we’ve had issues with people blocking roadways to keep other sportsmen from getting into big pieces of land because they want the area strictly for their hunting party! Being a retired deputy sheriff here in Maine and multi generational sportsmen, I was faced with very hostile and dangerous situations where firearms were in play, and was particularly dangerous for the other family members with me, I had the professional knowledge and experience and able to verbally communicate with them to change their behavior without resorting to them making a poor decision. Bottom line I guess I’m getting to is people need to be aware that those actions are not only dangerous but absolutely illegal to block traffic or restrict any movement on the roadways up there while participating in hunting activities. If it was a simple one time event I would not be so concerned, but when it was repeatedly happening every year and three years in a row it shows a trend that is not going to end well as eventually someone is going to not be experienced enough to be able to verbally defuse the situation!
