My big issue is sometimes I come across small businesses that sew their clothes (as opposed to having a manufacturer) so I know the workers were paid fairly based on where the company is from... but they don't disclose where they source their fabrics, and if i'm paying a very premium price I just want the entire garment to be 100% ethically made

literally hate this bc it's like why only be 90% transparent when you could just go that little bit extra and reap all the rewards?? infuriating and really not helpful to industry progress

My favourite way to stop shopping online is to tell myself I can only buy it in store. For example, I was super influenced to buy this top from Lululemon because it looked great on this girl online. Looked for it all over and then finally found it, then I tried it on in store and it didn’t look good on me at all. Forcing myself to go to the store and trying stuff out makes me much less likely to buy it.

really really love this tip, it takes away the aspirational side of shopping and makes it more realistic and personal to us, and therefore we're much more likely to make an informed decision!!

i had really gotten strict on not buying first hand when i remind myself about how nothing first hand even fits me properly anyways LOL. i’m very tall so standard sizing doesn’t accommodate my measurements and thus doesn’t look like the model unless they’re also very tall. another way i helped myself was deleting the app/turning off notifications for shopping apps. Even second hand shopping apps do a lot to convince you to come back to the app which can promote unintentional purchases, so doing this lets me browse for fun/inspo and not feel the urgency to purchase before a sale ends.

Packaging is an issue that really gets me 😆 Companies and people tend to go overboard.

Good questions and very thoughtful answers! Life has become very complicated, these last two decades. It feels rather unfair, to place all these problems and decisions on individual people, doesn't it? We really shouldn't have to weigh the social, geopolitical and environmental effects of everything we do, but here we are 😏

100%, it's so hard to make positive changes as an individual bc it seems pointless in the grand scheme of things, but i'm a firm believer that one action has a big impact!! we need to be making changes for ourselves whilst campaigning and pressuring our governments to bring about mass change, and that combined will hopefully make a big impact!

Yeah, vegan here and I've stopped buying any leather alternatives for fabric (some shoes seem okay, Nae are good). Pleather disintegrates after a few uses so even second hand it's not worth it. I wouldn't buy new leather, but second hand leather does seem to be the more sustainable choice.

oh interesting, i do agree about plastic leather not seeming to last!! i definitely want to try a biomaterial alternative to see the difference in longevity 👀
