I'll show you how to use WSPR software to check to see if my antenna is working. WSPR sends your call sign, power level and grid square during a nearly two minute transmission. Receiving stations decode your transmission and post the results to an online database. You can use a website to view a map of of the station that you have heard and stations that have heard you.

That's a great video, Randy! I've heard folks talking about WSPR; but now I think I'm going to get into it!

New on this new fascinating world. Just passed the foundation course (provisionally) in the UK and lots to learn. Thanks for the video.

Randy, I came here to try to understand how one radio can receive many stations and this now makes it clear to me. Great video.

Thanks Randy for this excellent introductory video on WSPR! WSPR signals can be decoded down to 28 dB below the noise level. A Google search on "Interpreting WSPR Data for Other Communication Modes" will show a method that uses signal to noise ratio reports from the WSPR online database to estimate propagation openings for other modes such as SSB, CW and PSK.

Excellent WSPR video, thanks, might show it to a few others. Was not so much about antenna testing, but WSPR can be used for antenna testing for sure. I've previously set up WSPR tests on 144 MHz running a single yagi and then hooking up 4 together which clearly showed up a 6dB increase in signal on the 4 array compared to a single antenna put through on the same array. Also use WSPR for monitoring tropospheric and ionospheric propagation. Its particularly handy for 6m band openings which sporadically opens.

Thanks for the video. I've just become interested on WSPR and researching on how to get it running on my MacBookPro to test my 2m handheld signals.

Randy, thanks for the video. I'm trying to figure out how you get the screen where you click update to the map. I am in WSPRNET map but can't get the screen you show. Thanks Jim...KQ3S

Randy, I installed this to test my 10m dipole and 10m isotron antennas, i am getting hits in Australia guess that means its working KF1BUZ Dan

Randy, thanks for the video. Always wanted to know how WSPR worked. BTW: QRZ.com shows K4EH in Sharpsburg, GA

Yogi Now you know. I looked in QRZ for K4EH. I hoped for posting that he was in Greenland. I thought it was odd to see him, but no one else out in that area including Europe.

As always, an excellent presentation, Randy! I am now super-stoked to dedicate a few of my otherwise idle hours to WSPR'ing ... both to contribute to the database, and to figure out where my next QSO is coming from. I know which way my antenna is pointing, but where does my signal go? SOLVED. Thanks de Tom WZ9U EN52xb

Quick question Randy, I have an 817 but have been told never run at 5 watts in digital mode and even more so WSPR. How well does it hold up to that?

Hi ~ Based on the results shown By WSPR , have you ever used the numbers shown to calculate and improve a transmitting Antenna? After all WSPR tells you received/transmitted signal Power + Distance !! Do you know of any examples as I am looking for anything to learn from which involves Antenna enhancements - cheers

Seems the kits are sold out. Is there any other source? I have learned so much from you. Thank you for your time. N4KBM.

Hi, I don't know if any other kits are available. I made this video over 3 years ago. I guess the guy has stopped selling these. Google around, maybe someone else has some WSPR receiver available. It was fun to go back and watch this video. I forget what is in my older videos. Thanks. Randy

Unless I missed something, the narrative on what stations are hearing YOU is incorrect. The map shows stations YOU are hearing. The only way to know if they are hearing you is to click on their callsign and it will indicate if you are hearing them or if they are hearing you. Just looking at the map itself does NOT mean they heard your station.

Thanks for the video. I had my 1st QSO on HF the other night. I was dislodging with them and sometimes they were not hearing me so I am interested in using WSPR to see how far out I am getting. So once I get a report done for WSPR I am going to search for a parrot type of feature on HF. I have used that on 2m/70cm to verify I was getting into DMR on my HT. Oh, my rig is Kenwood TS-590SG with a RSP1 SDR used as a pan adapter. The antenna is a borrowed Alpha Delta DD-?? Which is a 80/40 linked dipole. I saw a video of yours assembling a yagi for your tower project. Which one did you choose? Was it a kit? All the best, 73 de KI5HXM

Congratulations on your 1st HF QSO. WSPR is an interesting tool to check out your station. It is amazing to see how a couple of watts travels around the world. The antenna is a JK Antennas Navassa 5. It comes in lots of pieces. I have videos of me building it. Have fun, Randy

@@K7AGE thanks. Do you know of a SSB version of parrot on HF? I am trying to hear how I sound (am I speaking too loud or soft into mic).

The MFJ is nice but don't like the hollow telescope fm radio antenna type design for durability. Prefer to use the tall solid hf whips like people put on their mobiles.
@K7AGE

+Kandi Klover (Fursuiter Furry) True, the hollow one is nice that it collapses to a short length for traveling.

What is the difference between WSJT and WSPR? I tried WSPR and it closes as soon as it opens. WSJT appears to run but don't know how to set it up on a Flex 6300
@K7AGE
@K7AGE 9 лет назад
burt2481 WSJT and WSPR are different programs. WSPR only does a one way transmission, no two way QSO. WSJT is a program that implements may different of the Joe Taylor modes for meteor scatter, ionospheric scatter, JT4 for micro wave moon bounce and JT65 which is popular on the HF bands and provides for a 2 way QSO. I have run WSPR on many computers and have never had it shut down after it opens. Flex, not sure how you may that work. I don't know if you need to set a virtual audio path in your pc or not. Ask the guys in the FLEX forums.

One thing I will point out, WSPR is only as good as the number and location of those listening. OPERA falls into the same class. WSPR luckily has lots of listeners. OPERA, not so many. WSPR doesn't check antenna, but in fact the propagation of the band you chose.
@K7AGE
@K7AGE 9 лет назад
Supercazzola Yes it helps to have many stations all over the world listening. Also, you can check the differences in antennas. I see many more stations receiving me when I use my triband beam up 50'
@k8byp
@k8byp Год назад
thats propagation testing not antenna.
@k8byp
@k8byp Год назад
WSPR is weak signal. The WS receiver may be picking up your signal being reflected many times on the way to the WS receiver so theres no way to judge your antenna with such trivial testing.
