More axe experiment. I'm pretty sure this has never been done before.
What do you think about this axe restoration - makeover?
Should I stop it?
This project is just for fun, my hope is to inspire others to make something just for fun. I know this kind of handle it's heavy (4kg or 9lbs) and very unpractical to make but I still love it as experiment and interesting piece overall.
I just started to list some of the stuff I use for my projects in this amazon storefront:
www.amazon.com...
It's affiliate marketing, so if you order something from here you'll help the channel for free! Thank you!
Index of operation and materials:
0:15 Electrolysis: water and sodium carbonate solution, parts connected to negative side and steel sacrificial anodes to positive sice of a DC power supply (car battery charger). 2-3 hrs at 10amp.
1:52 Hot wire foam cutter machine and high density foam (kind used as home insulation).
3:00 Smoothing the foam sharp tool and 240 sandpaper.
3:40 Gluing foam piece with hot glue.
4:10 Regular white plaster brushed on foam to help with cast quality.
4:45 Lost foam mold preparation by sifting fine sand (I'm using burned out petrobond sand but any fine and dry sand would work)
5:24 Adding sodium carbonate as degassing agent and "lite salt" (a mix of potasium cloride and sodium cloride) as flux to the molten aluminum.
6:18 First try failed. Removing aluminum parts from head
6:26 Second try with different feeder configurations
7:20 Removing feeders with metal cutting band saw and hand saw
8:04 Refining aluminum parts with rasp file and sandpaper
8:32 Shaping wood key
9:05 Drilling 5mm holes for brass pins
9:20 Shaping handle with bandsaw, rasp, file and sandpaper
11:33 Burning wood with torch
11:56 Boiled linseed oil applied to wood
12:20 Re-grinding bevels and sharpening on belt grinder.
Thank you a lot for watching. See you next week!

It’s beautiful and unique! As an engineer, I recommend you hang it on the wall and admire it! Under heavy, repeated use the aluminum will probably crack and shear right under the head. But I repeat; it’s beautiful!

Yes, but I had the volume off. Did he say why he didn't just make a completely metal handle? He could have started with a custom wood handle (or styrofoam I guess?! For reasons?!) and then make a reusable mold with clay/plaster/not sand/dirt. Then full metal handle.

@quingloquinglo4342

This head is from a Mattock, not an axe. It is, fundamentally, a digging tool that can be used in almost any tough soil conditions to either loosen, dislodge or dig. It is designed for penetrating soil through to the root structures below the stump, if not to annihilate a rotten stump entirely. Using it to cut perpendicular to the tracheids in softwood/heartwood is simply a misuse of what is closer to a smashing instrument than cutting one - the surface area of the bladed edges are simply an aid to penetration through a wide range of soil conditions, root structures, stones and rocks. While a slightly sharpened edge can be useful in certain structures with excellent soil quality, each edge is designed to withstand direct blows to any rock that might be found under the soil and not result in any lasting deformation to it.

Yes. Its a mattock. I’ve been looking for one myself. I used to have one and damned if I don’t know where it walked off to. If I restored this one I would wire wheel it clean, fit a hardwood handle to it, and add an oil finish. All of this casting and keyholing and such is all very skillful I admit. And we all have an opinion on how to fix things. In the end we do what we want and if others don’t like it they can make their own damned video....right?

I’ve been restoring axes for about 5 years now. I picked it up after watching wranglerstar and falling in love with the small forest axe like him. This project was incredibly interesting to watch and I love the aesthetics of the finished product. I don’t think you were looking for function over form. The design is just that of someone who doesn’t know axes that well. Palm swell totally out of proportion, key hole integral should never be anywhere near an axe, you didn’t even orient the grain of the handle in the proper direction. That being said, I don’t think your goal was to make the next granfors brœks small forest, but to incorporate unusual and interesting techniques on something they don’t normally apply to, and personally I found it incredibly entertaining and fascinating to watch. Very awesome stuff, you got my subscription.

That’s what it’s for. Fighting fires. Cutting line. Making fire breaks. It’s a Pulaski. A specialized tool for a specific job. Edit: I will garden with a mattock, a pick and shovel, but I took a vow to never pick up another Pulaski again.

What you have there is a "pulaski" tool used for fighting forest fires. "The Pulaski is a special hand tool used in fighting wildfires which combines an axe and an adze in one head. Similar to a cutter mattock, it has a rigid handle of wood, plastic, or fiberglass. The Pulaski is used for constructing firebreaks, able to both dig soil and chop wood"

This axe is a farming implement more than a woodsman tool. It was meant for cutting roots and planting tubers more than chopping wood. I seriously hope no one is complaining about it's performance for a task it was not intended but still did well enough on.

You pack the sand around the object you want to cast. Foam burns away incredibly fast. The liquid metal burns away the foam and solidifies where the foam used to be. When it cools, it hardens and takes the exact shape left behind from the foam (If you did it right.)

May I suggest using acetone to remove the foam core first? That way when you pour the metal the foam doesn't cause the flame, black ash and horrible chemicals into the air. Its also a lot safer, and gives you a better cast. :) Just leave the acetone to sit for a while (even 12 hours) while it eats away the foam.

Ed Pulaski came up with the idea in the early 1900s, [c. 1911], but ppl in the know have always questioned his "invention" as a variant of the original tool that was made by the Collins Tool Co. back East from whence Ed came. The stories that I heard were that he took their design, modified it and made it his own. Then, later on, Collins modified their Original design to essentially match Pulaski's due to that very popular and successful design. Now, how much truth is in this, or other stories, is fairly hard to determine...

THOR_360_PRODUCTIONS so with electrolysis, since he’s essentially formed a circuit with connecting the rusted axe piece, it forms a movement of electrons when current is passed. To put it briefly, since rust is just a chemical reaction of oxygen and iron, this movement of electrons causes the oxygen from the iron to break and react with the water instead, presumably into some sort of OH- compound. But correct me if I’m wrong. I haven’t studied chem in a while 😰

He messed it up when he put an aluminum handle holder there, aluminium is brittle and eventually it will give up. Moreover there's a much simpler solution, we put a round wooden handle through the hole in the middle and put a block at the bottom to prevent it from slipping. That's how ut is usually done, the extra handle holder is just not right.
