This weekend is the annual Sunshine City Antique Show in Saint Petersburg, Florida, and I’m picking through my "Vintage Modern St. Pete" mall space to pack for it! How do I decide what to leave, and what to take, when both places will be so busy?
This episode gives you a teaser look at St. Petersburg, Florida’s antique district, and some of the great mid-century pieces at the über cool Vintage Modern St. Pete antique mall. But mostly, it’s a fun review of the wide variety of things I sell in my space there, with conversation about how a dealer decides what goes to a show, what goes online to sell and what stays in the retail space.
On the way to my booth, we encounter Brutalism on one side, and a shiny happy Raymond Loewy designer set on the other side. We walk through an ocean of vintage fashion to reach my showcase, filled with Native American baskets and a rare Pre-Columbian jaguar effigy vessel.
My space is filled with art, vintage collectibles, decor and furniture, but some of these things don’t look like the other! I cull out the traditional and Victorian pieces to take to the show, while explaining why I’m leaving the amazing clock, the fab lucite lamp and the kidney-shaped table for the mall to sell. At the end, I review what I’m taking to the antique show and why.
I hope my review of my favorite Florida modernist mall space helps you learn more about antique and vintage items, and share my encounters with them in the real world. I love sharing our passion and this community, and hope we will all help each other with our antique education.
Here’s some more of what I find:
Turner exotic bird print, Camel cigarette display, Tarkay prints, Dali print, Drypoint engraving, Floridiana, Treasure Craft Hawaii figures, Weller pottery, Kosta Boda glass, Lladro, Victorian exotic bird carafe, motion lamp clock, Murano glass, stained glass lamps, Lane Brutalist dressers, Seminole jacket, Alaska baskets, Pre-Columbian art, Cybis figurines, Lenox Rapunzel, designer lamps, advertising and ephemera

Thanks! I lived in San Diego until I was 10 and I spent a lot of time down there 15 years ago when I wrote the Treasure Craft Pottery Craft book. I'm long overdue for a trip to Rose Bowl Swap Meet, and I've been to Alameda in the past few years. I am hoping to get there in 2020. Where are you?

Where could I research a figurine I have that looks pre columbian, well it looks very old. I have been searching a long time. Any information would be greatly appreciated George.
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad 4 года назад
Here's the best tip I have. Get a new piece of terra cotta pottery (like a garden pot) and moisten it and smell it, it will smell like wet clay. Then moisten the figurine (on the underside or somewhere it seems solid) and smell it. If it smells like wet clay, it's not ancient. If it smells like soggy garbage, it is likely to be several hundreds of years old or more. Early pieces were sun dried rather than kiln fired, so they have lots of organic material that smells if wet.

Thank you for your content! I have a question. I am in the estate liquidating business and am having issues selling antique furniture. You mentioned Busters I will reach out to them too but do you have other recommendations for companies that buy antique furniture in south Florida ?
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad 2 года назад
I find that Facebook Marketplace is the way to sell furniture down there. If you list it at the right price (compare with what's on there), you'll know within a week if you can find a local buyer.

@@TheAntiqueNomad I'm sure I'll enjoy it! I really liked that early souvenir coffee pot you had. I still tend to want to go back to the old items. The MCM pieces are OK, to me, if they aren't "cutesy". I have quite a collection of the Napco, among others, fish planters. They are the realistic-looking ones. Some of what you were showing were the more desirable, to me, MCM items.
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad 4 года назад
They're a little more focused on quality there for the most part. I love the coffee pot and actually so did the owner of that Mall when I first brought it
@CONSTELLATION_PEGASUS
@CONSTELLATION_PEGASUS 4 года назад
@@TheAntiqueNomad There's no escaping the value of good quality. When the maker takes pride in what they do, the owner can take pride in their ownership. Of course the standards of the makers was a lot better a century ago, so that's where I tend to gravitate. Everything now has built-in obsolescence...i.e., no pride in manufacturing. When the makers of centuries past made something, it was built to last. That's why we get to enjoy them now, in the 21st Century. That coffee pot was really nice. It was probably my favourite of all the items.
@TheAntiqueNomad

CONSTELLATION PEGASUS Is certainly true in all eras of collecting. Even manufactured goods have varying levels of finish and refinement, hopefully we’ll see more connoisseurship as new collectors advance their knowledge. On the other hand, sometimes kitschy junk that wasn’t supposed to last is entertaining just because it somehow did lol
