What is rumination? It’s a natural response to a problematic situations. Your brain wants to solve your problems, that's what it does so well! So why does thinking deeply about something become a problem? Well, it’s linked to depression and anxiety because when we’re dwelling on a problem, it may seem like its helping you by giving you a sense you’re solving it or taking action in the short-term, but in reality it makes it harder for you to move on from situations. And rumination can become obsessive overthinking which encourages more dwelling on the negative aspects your past or future, leaving you stuck in a spiral of negative thinking.
Many mental health issues are linked to rumination, but rumination can also lead to other mental health issues too, so in this video I explain what rumination is in more detail, how it can affect you and the 5 steps you can use to stop the habit of ruminating.

Thank you for the advice. I especially like the idea of distracting myself when these thoughts come up. I'm going through a break up and was hurt a great deal. My emotions have been all over the place and have been dwelling on it. Walking and exercising help relieve the stress. Thanks again.

I liked the video and lessons on rumination. It was what I needed to learn about today. Also , that is a great idea to set aside time to positively set aside time to come up with problem solving ideas. I walk a lot and I have found good solutions when walking outside. Thank you so much!

I have a gut condition called bile acid malabsorption and I have been feeling sick 24/7 for a long time. Overtime I developed a fear for everything gut-related and it has become an obsession. Overthinking and negative thoughts are my middle names. I am committed to step out of that cycle but it is a long journey and I am stuck at home. Thank you for all the information you share.

This is a great video! Solid ideas and really helpful. I do wish it was different music-- the upbeat generic stuff is distracting and gets annoying since so many people use it. More meditative music I think would suit better your voice and your information.I wish you best of luck with your channel!

Hi Andrew, I've got another dumb question for you. I'm sorry I ask you so many dumb questions, but you're one of the only people capable of helping me that actually answers me. I have a situation. I'm being intentionally ignored and rejected by someone that I have been nothing but nice and encouraging to. So I'm being blown off which hurts. It's not a friendship that serves me in any way, but I'm feeling rejected and upset. I'm trying to chalk it up to incompatible personalities and move on, but it hurts. I know I'm not everyone's cup of tea, but I'm finding this with more and more people, like something is wrong with me. Do you have any solid advice for me because I feel like crap. Thanks!

Don’t forget to be kind to yourself right now. Try and spend time in a positive place with people that do appreciate you. Remember, when we’re faced with these issues, rumination is one of those things that wants you to focus on all the negative things, the problems to try and help you solve them… even if they can’t be solved. You can take control by challenging those thoughts and doing some activities that help you fully relax and feel calm. Take some moments each day to think about your own self-worth, your strengths. What and where are the good or positive things (even very small things) happening in your life, it will help to switch your focus away from the issues. There is a great quote that I like to remind myself of too: ‘What other people think of you is none of your business’.

Last night , a mouse scurried down the curtain right behind and to the right of my head. My husband caught it and cleaned the curtains and everything (I’m really sick and was already overwhelmed), but I keep thinking about it because it scared me so bad. Is that ruminating? Do you think these tips will help with that? I feel traumatized.
@andrewmajor-strongerminds
@andrewmajor-strongerminds Год назад
Thanks for sharing your comments, when we’re already overwhelmed, we’re more likely to find ourselves ruminating, and it can be hard to move away from that cycle of worry. The video has some great tips as a starting point. For example, I talk about recognising and noticing your thoughts and labelling them as unhelpful rumination. This will help you interrupt that thought pattern and shift your thoughts. Be kind to yourself, it takes practice too. Generally, though, in daily life, things which can help you reduce internal stress and anxiety will help reduce rumination gradually and build a more positive outlook on life, as I talk about in the video. Find things you can do which bring you some joy and have a positive impact on the chemicals in your mind and body, reducing stress hormones and boosting endorphins, serotonin, and oxytocin like walking, talking to friends, engaging in creative hobbies, activities you enjoy. Some of my clients find getting into the daily habit of writing down 3 or 4 things which have been good about their day allows them to shift their focus and build a more positive state of mind. I hope that helps 😊

It manifests as a strong feekinh of oressure but not pain in my chest ever since the health eventthat precipjtated it. 3 months of waiting for appointments for specialists which then get cancelled and then being out at thr end of the listonly to start waiting again for testing that may or msy not lead to answers about poss gastruc bypass complications that nearky killed me and caused continuous dizzyness and gait issues and inability to evacuate bowels without meds, laxitives, suppositories and diet alterations akl the while losing weight and strength. Making it nearky impossible to forget continually, while everyone waits in line for their TURN, disregarding how sick you are.
