AOS (AIR/OIL SEPARATOR) SERVICE on your Fiat 500 Abarth (or any 1.4l turbo engine) - HOW TO!

This video shows you how to service your Air/Oil Separator (AOS) on your Fiat 500 Abarth. This also applies to the Fiat 500L, Fiat 500X (1.4T), Fiat 124 Spider/Abarth, Jeep Renegade (1.4T) and Dodge Dart (1.4T). This service should be done every 30,000 miles or if you experience an oil leak in Cylinders 3 & 4. Very easy to do!

You will also need a can of Brake Cleaner (Any auto parts store carries this)
The purpose of the Air/Oil Separator is to purge crankcase vapor back into the intake system and into the engine while allowing the engine internals to breath. The O-Ring that is replaced during this service is used to seal the AOS to the Valve Cover. This o-ring is known to become dry and crack, leading to oil leaks.

I did this today as my car was leaking a little oil onto the valve cover. Wow, what a difference! The car sounds much smoother at idle and just feels happier.

I was told by a mechanic that my slow oil leak ('13 Dodge Dart Turbo) might be caused by the pcv valve and this video is a godsend. I think I know what to look for now and may be able to fix it myself. $20 and a couple of hours of my time might save me a lot of money and hassle. Changing the o ring to the valve cover to a viton one pretty much eliminates future problems with leaks. Costs only .50 more than a rubber one that's only going to fail due to heat.

@@johnnoe1648 My car has been leaking 2 quarts of oil every 5,000 miles you think it could be this? Every cold start my car is like back firing sounds pretty cool I guess lol but I know it can’t be normal. Sometimes, I’m the morning when it’s so cold it has trouble cranking over but I know it’s not the battery cuz it’s brand new. Car just hit 45,000 miles and I’ve babied it, NEVER rallied it had oil changes every 5k, but I think it’s time for spark plugs and this.

Just did this...so simple, the gasket was dry and. Brittle leaking and it was a orange/yellow color. Tha ks great video. I did it on a 2013 Dodge Dart.

some tips i have for after doing this service: 1. that o-ring can be super hard to remove. use needle nose pliers, it will help a lot. 2. definitely let the AOS dry for longer than 20 minutes, some liquid can get stuck in there 3. when liquid does get stuck in the AOS, and you start/drive your car for the first time, there may be tons of white smoke. monitor it and it should go away pretty quickly.

I want to point out for 500L owners (at least my 2014) experiencing the leak: The AOS is a little different. The PCV (same part # in the vid) is positioned on the bottom. I used needle nose pliers to remove it because standard pliers wouldn't get clearance around the hex sides. They also used clic/clic-r clamps on one hose, which I could not find pliers locally so that hose I removed from the intake instead of the AOS(cleaning was a little more challenging through the hose). Also making it challenging was the size of the AOS, its larger in the 500L. So cleaning took a bit more legwork. Comments prior to mine include a link to a forum where the owner picked up a O ring at a local hardware store in the plumbing section. Take note of the diameters and thickness, the one you see in the link. It fit perfectly and cost .59 cents. I definitely noticed a smoother idle and ride. Now I can safely move onto other nuances. Thank you for the video! It was precisely what I needed to resolve my leak.

O ring material suitable for plumbing (water) may not be compatible with oil. You need Nitrile or Viton.

2012 Fiat 500 "Multiair" - The return hose leading to the oil fill area popped off at the AOS. I put it back on and added a clamp (it didn't have one), but hadn't seen this video yet, and now there is even more smoke than before. Gonna take it back apart and do this stuff too.

@@NGENCustomsandPerformance I completed the procedure today. I can barely believe the "o-ring" was rubber at one point, because it was rock hard and felt like solid plastic. I could not remove it without breaking it, and it certainly wasn't sealing very well. I cleaned the AOS internally best I could with brake cleaner.

Great video! I noticed oil on my #4 plug during a tune-up. I had a P0299 turbo underboost code. The code is gone and it runs great now. Fingers crossed that it stays that way.

@@piti89ful Very briefly. I ended up spending $2,500 to have the turbo replaced. Once the turbos lose power, it throws the code. I could live with it, but it would periodically put the engine in limp mode.

Thank you so much....been working on my toyota 1985 4runner the past 25 years....Had a FIAT X19 in High School 70s??? Always worked my my VWs and Hodaka Dirt Bike back in the 70s as well. Now I getting an Abarth after spending two months in Sicily driving a rental :) Also have a Susuki DRZ 400 dirt bike now to chase pigs in the months here in Hawaii. Shit, I might be getting too old (63) to own this Abarth LOL. I still enjoy racing my two stroke moped here too. Reminds me of my Hodaka dayzzzzz. Aloha, Konaboyz Honolulu, Hawaii

Instead, I just replaced mine altogether. It's only 70 bucks or something OEM. I also replaced the injectors for $200 rather than the dealer wanting 1hr book-time to "clean" them.

I have a leak on the passenger side. Haven't pinpointed it yet. No leaks for 52000 miles. Had a freakish anomaly vehicle went into an uncontrolled high rev the illuminated transmission light the TPS light and accelerator pedal was completely disabled. Had to put the vehicle into neutral and then safely pull it over and shut it down. Had to sit the whole night to reset this issue.

The AOS on the 124 spider is different due to the longitudinal orientation of the engine; plus the majority of the hoses going into it don't have the spring clamps.

You likely have an aftermarket intake that doesn’t have this hose connected to it. Remove the filter before you clean the AOS and then reinstall when you are done

I would leave the factory AOS but add a catch can to it if you are having issues with oil consumption.

How much do u torque the bolts? I tightened it but didn't want to over tight it and snap the plastic an really screwed. Did this and wow mine was dirty 2013 dodge dart I do all the maintenance myself and this was very easy

Help i have a 2013 abarth and I tried to use a o2 fouler and it came lose and then rubbed on the ground splitting the o2 wire and melting o2. We replaced o2 and now I have a bunch of codes. ? Where do I start ? Fuses or bypass valve circuit? Codes are P0034 p0245 p0458 p0420 p04ac

Hello Brian. How do you know that the replacement PCV you are using is correct? I am unable to source a PCV anywhere. Fiat will only supply it with the AOS, the same goes for the auto parts suppliers in my area. Thanks for your help.

You are correct, the PCV “officially” is not available for this application from Fiat or any auto parts supplier. The PCV valve that is sourced is considered “universal” but it was discovered several years ago that this one is an exact match to the one that comes in the AOS. However, because of this, you won’t be able to source it by application, only by part number (provided in the description of the video). There have been many (including myself) that have been running this PCV Valve for years without issue or concern. Keep in mind there is not much to a PCV Valve when it comes to how they are made and how they function. This video was made to show a cost savings alternative instead of having to purchase a new AOS every 30-40k miles. Hope this helps.

If this thing is gummed up can it cause a low circuit code for the crank case two codes I got Po4db p051c I’ve just replaced the purge valve solanoid and the brake booster vacuum seal on the side the vacum leak or what ever code is gone now I have these two pretty sure all the connections r good but if it’s a bad sensor I can’t find the part or anything related to the sensor associated

I know this may not be the right place to ask this. I have a 2012 Fiat 500 Pop 1.4L automatic. Cylinder 1 keeps misfiring even after I changed all the plugs and ignition coils. Do you know what could cause the misfire at cylinder 1? Can a bad oxygen sensor cause misfire just at cylinder 1? You seem knowledgeable in Fiat and I feel I should give it a try here.

Check the fuel injector. Bad or poor spray pattern can cause a mis-fire. Do a compression test. I have seen bad valve springs on these cars too.

Can a faulty PCV Valve / Oil Separator cause a whistling sound from the engine? I have a 2018 500 Turbo and I have a whistling noise when the car is idling. When I switch the AC on, or the vent fans on the whistling seems to go away. I had a shop look at it and they are confident the sound is coming from the PCV Valve. Thanks in advance!

Yes it can. Not saying this for sure is your issue but on other applications (Chevy Cruze 1.4t, bmws, etc), it is very common for this to happen with the pcv. We offer a replacement pcv and o-ring on our website. I would start there.

Can bad/dirty pcv valve cause blue smoke on cold startup for few seconds then it disappears. Abarth 500, 27k miles. Thanks in advance!
