Latent fingerprints cannot be seen with the naked eye. They need chemicals or certain powders to enhance it so you can see the fingerprint. The powder adheres to the grease or moisture that form the latent prints causing them to become visible.
When fingerprints are used as evidence in court, the forensic specialist may have to testify. Great time and care is taken when performing the process of pulling fingerprints and confirming a match. If the database produces a potential match, the forensic specialist must visually compare the prints to ensure they are truly a match.
