MacBook Air M1 user here. It’s insane how good this thing is. I cheaped out and only got 8GB of RAM which still works super well and even edits 4k video, but only if that’s the ONLY thing you’re doing. No Spotify in the background lol.

Hi Benj, Thanks for sharing. Really enjoying your guide series even as someone not looking to buy anything "right now"- I'm still learning stuff. I've got a midrange 15" MBP from 2018 that I am still using and probably will do until 2023 but the direction Apple is taking with these new MBPs is very exciting. Still can't believe we have ports back and the M1 chips look to be a massive leap in technology. I shot 90% stills 10% video but have been doing more of the latter since I got my Mavic Air2S so I am leaning towards a maxxed out M1 Max once they are refreshed mid 2023 to last me the next five years.

Benj Great video. I am currently debating on buying a new computer myself and the timing is perfect. Questions. How do you handle your storage needs? One of my biggest obstacles has been storage. This topic is not new when it comes to photographers, and content creators. I’ve heard of some wedding photographers taking thousands of photos. That can really add up fast. They can't all be keepers, can they? I have noticed as my photography proficiency has increased; I am taking far more purposeful photographs, which cut down on the amount of files. One thought I have is we have to be willing to let go of some of the shots that we are not happy with and only keep the ones that are important. This would help me with my own storage needs especially if I take multiple shots of the same scene or multiple portrait shots. Do we just delete them and once they're gone they're gone and not worry about it? I'd like to know a little bit more of your process for sorting and purging files…. Maybe not a complete step by step but perhaps some tips and tricks or rules you follow for keeping of image or files versus deleting. I know any process can’t be a one size fits all. Especially if people are creating content photos and videos. If a video already exists, please let me know. Again Benj thanks for putting this content together and for all your insight. I have truly learned a lot from your channel.

What about color-wise? I’m thinking of getting that 16” M1 Pro, but I don’t wanna spend all that money on a laptop, only to have to spend even more on an extra screen that’ll give me better color accuracy. 😔
@bytomw
@bytomw 2 года назад
Just to add my 2c I have had the M1 with 16GB of ram and an M1 Pro with 16 GB of ram. Lightroom was slightly slower on the M1 Pro in general use because the M1 Pro’s GPU borrows some of that ram. The computer gets over this by using LOTS of swap Memory 8GB+ in some cases. I realised my system needed about 24GB of ram to run the OS and Lr without swap so I upgraded to the M1 Max with 32GB of ram. Very very happy with the trade up.
@benjhaisch
@benjhaisch 2 года назад
Oh that's fascinating, I felt like mine was a lot faster on my M1 Pro than on the M1 Mac Mini with the same 16GB of memory because of the CPU cores. But yeah, Adobe/Apple need to figure out the memory swap... I feel like it's better, but still annoying that sometimes it's CRAZY big.
@bytomw
@bytomw 2 года назад
@@benjhaisch it was only ever in the library and develop modules. The export times where almost 1/2 the M1 on the M1 Pro. My only complaints of any kind on the M1 Max is that MacOS has this annoying bug with external drives spinning up before it will do basic tasks in finder. But I’m pretty sure that’s an OS think not an M1 thing.

I replaced my 16 (intel based 2019) MacBook Pro with the new 14.2 MacBook Pro, 1TB. This machine is amazing - the screen is the best and no sacrifices for portability. After using a 16 inch for over a year, I can say that the extra screen real estate is just not worth the weight for me. I really hated lugging that thing around. LOVING the new machine!
@bh9262
@bh9262 2 года назад

@LensEthics
@LensEthics 2 года назад
@@bh9262 The 14.2 is the best small screen laptop Ive ever used. Powerful, portable, beautiful, with everything I could ever need. I used it about a month before I passed it on to another person on my team. I switched to the 16 inch m1. The screen size is more comfortable for my use. I do hate the weight but thats all I dislike. The battery life is a shocker. I am always surprised to see that only a bit of battery has been used after a couple days. Not having to take the big power brick which is heavy too is a huge plus. I shave weight wherever I can. I have no problems walking out the door for a 2 hour lecture with only 1/2 a battery with lots to spare. I know how long it can go, I know how the keyboard size layout feels, I know this machine so well. I borrowed the 14 on a couple of occasions to use in a lecture, wanting to try the smaller size again for portability but, I found that I missed the 16 inch display even for these smaller non editing tasks. Moving windows around, laying out the desktop, its just more comfortable with the larger screen. To edit comfortably, the larger screen is better for me because I feel the work can breathe in the larger screen. The only screen that takes the cake is the new studio display. But, to carry around, i draw the line at the 16. 😀 I suggest you try them out. I had the benefit of using the wonderful 14 for a month before I made my final decision and for the reasons explained, the one with the larger display is my best friend. PS Keep the weight and workflow in mind. For my in the field documentary work I’d find it hard to take the 16. Not owning the 14 anymore (which is also a bit heavy) I’d opt for an even lighter set up like an iPad Pro 12.9 with a few back up Sandisk SSDs BUT only is this workflow and field work scenario. In these cases I would not miss the heavier laptops at all because my focus is elsewhere. Always keep workflow and weight in mind.

Curious. What would be the pros/cons of going with the max mini and a nice display instead of a new laptop. I don’t know much about the Mac mini besides portability differences obviously. I have a functioning laptop, was somewhat interested in waiting for the new desktops but just wondering where those would differ from the Mac mini and a nice display?
@benjhaisch

Oh hey O’Malley! Yeah, the Mac Mini just gives a lot of flexibility if you want to have a desktop option that gives you all of the internals for cheap. Apple is rumored to announce a new Mac Mini and a new display in March too 👀

Hi great video. I largely agree with your conclusions except there is 2 arguments I like to put forward as a nuance: 1) you (rightfully) stated that the Adobe programs are mainly CPU based and use little GPU, hence going to M1 Max doesn’t bring you much as photographer. However, there are other editing programs like Topaz and ON1 that use the GPU more intensely. Hence for those using those programs upgrading to M1 Max might make lot more sense 2) your pro (extended budget) recommendation is M1 Pro 32 GB and 2 Tb. In my view if someone shells out $3,400 then why not spent just 200 bucks more for the 24 gpu core Max chip. The 200 will not only give you the additional gpu cores but double bandwidth plus the additional video engines. Now you might argue that photographers don’t use these video engines. Correct. However it’s a small step from photo editing into some video editing. And if you buy a 3400 machine I would future proof it for only 200 extra
@benjhaisch
@benjhaisch 2 года назад
for sure, I just know a lot of photographers who have never done video work and have zero plans to that just don't need the extra GPU cores at all let alone the extra media encoders. Solid info though, thanks for sharing!
@jurrydevries4006
@jurrydevries4006 2 года назад
@@benjhaisch No thanks needed my friend, I merely wanted to add some nuance to your outstanding analysis. Plus let’s face it, in the end of the day everyone decides for him/her self. And typically it is caught in this triangle of Need vs Budget vs Desire. Ps I ordered a 16 inch, M1 Max 10/24 cores, 32 Gb and 2 Tb storage. Although I am just a simple amateur who started few years back, I currently have approx 2 Tb of data most of it archived ion external drive and backed up to the cloud.

Good video. Just sharing my experience with fellow photographers : I own a MB Air for 12 months now with M1 chip, 8GB memory and 500GB. Initially very happy with the machine (fast and silent as it has no fan). I use Capture One on Leica M 24 megapixel DNG/RAW files, all excellent. Since shortly I use the Leica M10R with 40 megapixel files. Now the MB Air is unfortunately not fast enough anymore : scrolling through files in C1 takes time to get pictures sharp, and retouching with a brush is often also noticeable slow. Importing and exporting takes more time but that's no issue. Scrolling through exported JPG versions is fast enough. The delays in the scrolling and retouching are significant enough to better upgrade the Mac. Any recommendations are always welcome.

Hey thanks! I haven't used it with C1 but it's probably the one app that actually uses the GPU more in a photography setting so that probably makes a lot of sense. I didn't really feel slowed down by the 16GB Mac Mini in LR but the M1 Pro was snappier for sure.
