The first ever 17" Unibody MacBook Pro, introduced by Phil Schiller at Macworld San Francisco in january 2009. Steve Jobs was ill at the time, therefore he wasn't available.
The Unibody enclosure was first introduced in October 2008, at a special event ("Spotlight Turns To Notebooks"). Every MacBook got an update at the time, except for the 17", which got delayed till january 2009.
Most notable upgrade in this new 17" MacBook Pro is the new battery technology. It'll run up to 8 hours on a single charge, and can be recharged up to a 1000 times, according to Apple.

Now I'm watching this video on MacBook Pro 17" Mid-2009. I got it from a second-hand market at a very cheap price recently. The performance is not strong anymore comparing today's standard but it works fine and importantly it gives me a good feeling to own a great flagship MacBook. Thanks to Apple for creating a wonderful MacBook.

Yeah. The newer computers are more basic but with less ports and lower durability, but with incredible performance and portability!

I mean, the non-retina versions have 7 hours of battery, too. It's just that 2 years ago all models shipped with 10 hour batteries.

@@raven4k998 Quick retrospective to this 8 year old comment: people love lightweight portable laptops, and chip efficiency (M1) can make very thin laptops have much better battery life without sacrificing anything else. Hope we don't have to go back to thicker laptops to solve inefficiency problems!

2 thing apple needs to do: upgrade the graphocs to 390m, intel i 3,5,and7 and then add a keypad to the 17 inch and 15 inch if possible. If they Can do this itll be perfect.

I think it would be a great time. They moved from the 100 watt GPUs this could take, to 50 watt with Retina, to 35 Watt with the Touchbar...Now would be a great time for a new 17 inch for those who just want nuts out power.

@maniacwithagun767 that's because you haven't seen it right in front of your eyes. Macbook Pro's 17" display resolution is just amazing. 1080p videos come to life there. It has louder speakers, more connectors and a longer battery life, and it's only a little wider than the 15inch model.

It really depends on how you configure it though. I'm sure the 7 hours are increased a bit if you put an SSD rather than a regular hard drive.

Can you change the battery or will you need to buy a new mac in 5 years? Fix that and I will get one. I still have and still use my cool year 2000 mac.
