No doubt an "off the wall" question based on total misunderstanding, but here goes. I am writing a Pages document and find myself needing one of a few hundred phrases one or more times on each of maybe 50 pages. I expect to be creating several more documents needing the same phrases. Turns out the phrases (actually bird names) have a 4-letter "code". What I'd like to do is create a "macro" so that while in Pages, I type the code, and the "macro" would look up the code and render the phrase. That does not seem possible with AppleScript, as I cannot determine how to invoke a "macro" from inside Pages. I suppose it might be possible to write the document using the codes and post process it so that an AppleScript could look at the text to find the codes and then do the lookup, but I'm not sure. Any advice?

You actually don’t need AppleScript at all for what you’re trying to do. Your Mac can do it with built in functionality of the OS called text replacements. Head to the Apple menu > System Preferences > Keyboard, then click Text. You should be able to create the type of shortcuts you’re describing.

@@ClickingKeys Wow! I looked into it, and it does work. I got to thinking that I might not want it system-wide, and Pages has a very similar text replacement preference; and I can turn it on/off easily. Thanks very much for the heads-up. And the timeliness of the reply!

I’m not sure I understand what you mean. What do you mean it comes up with your Finder?
