@@vic321344 That is mathematically impossible. The old Aptera went bankrupt in 2015 I believe, and the rebooted brand with the electric power-train only kicked off in 2019, which is 3 years ago. If it were the older version with an ICE engine (I believe it was), I would agree with you, but this is actually quite impressive. Added the right to repair and their commitment to longevity of the car for the owner and accessibility to parts etc., their transparency, the joy they have building this thing, and the scientific and congruent approach to their mission is, for me at least, thrilling and I am definitely becoming an Aptera fanboy, and without any reservation I might add; I'm not ashamed to admit that. @@jwvandegronden Actually the founders lost control of the original Aptera Inc. when they were ousted in a board fight in 2009, by a single vote. The new management changed plans and couldn't get backing, and liquidated the company in 2011. Chris Anthony, who by 2019 had co-founded and taken a successful lithium battery company public, was offered the original Aptera rights by the widow of the man who had purchased them at the 2011 auction. He regathered the key people and restarted the company in 2019. I am thrilled with their experience, focus on a goal and their progress.

One major limiting factor on the turning radius of front wheel drive vehicles is the limits imposed by CV joints on the outer ends of the front drive axels. Since Aptera has in-wheel motors and no drive axels, the only limit to turning radius here would be the limits of clearance between the inside rear wheel fairings and the main body. The other factor encountered in all vehicles with front and rear wheels is the wheel base--distance between them. The shorter the wheel base, the shorter the turning radius, but a shorter wheelbase reduces stability.

One question, since the cooling comes from the "skin" of the vehicle, won't the black option inhibit cooling, at least to a degree? Or does it come entirely from the undercarriage, which never gets direct sunlight? Second, I'd recommend that anyone with an Aptera ALWAYS park as far forward in the parking stall as possible and NEVER back in. It will be too easy for thoughtless/distracted drivers, particularly in taller vehicles, to see the body of the Aptera, and assume it is much further away and begin turning their vehicle prematurely, not seeing the protruding wheels. Just something to keep in mind.

4 requests / questions: 1) Can you address road clearance? I'm specifically concerned about driveways with a steep incline. 2a) Can the Aptera go through a traditional carwash? 2b) If not, how frequently will the solar panels need to be washed to maintain efficiency? 3) Will there be hooks or anything in the trunk space to help secure items in the back? 4) Will there be any outlets in the dash or seat divider for charging external devices like mobile phones?
@ApteraMotors
@ApteraMotors Год назад
1 - There will be an approach and departure angle chosen to allow the wheel fairings to clear most driveway transitions and speed bumps. Taller or steeper ones will be able to be handled by a foam energy absorber, but we do recommend caution with high-speed impacts with steep transitions - such as going over a set of railroad tracks that do not have the guard between the rails. If damage ever did occur to the wheel pants, we are planning on making them easily replaceable and affordable. 2- Yes, Aptera's solar panels will be able to handle an automatic car wash just fine. We recommend keeping the surface clean for optimal yield. 3- We plan to offer a cargo net and dividers to shield between the luggage space and the cabin to prevent any objects from easily moving around. And to have tie down hooks included in the cargo area. There are plenty of aftermarket possibilities to explore as well! 4- Aptera will have charging capabilities for personal devices, exact configurations to be shared closer to production.

Aptera runs on 195/45 R16 tires. The jacking points will be clearly marked. I don't know if a jack will be included. Tire repairs shouldn't require jacking. Rotor and pad replacement should be simple and very infrequent. Aptera grants right to repair, and I expect a large aftermarket to grow up around it. @pppppp-jt5ue Год назад
My work has installed solar panels over all the parking spaces, with a few gaps. Depending on the which season, and which gap, the amount of sun charging will change as the sun angle changes during the seasons. I would like to know if there will be a display saying how much charge each solar cell is generating. That way if the tail keeps getting shaded, as an example, I can try to find a different spot. The idea of going out once an hour to see what, if any part of the aptera is under shade is not very appealing. On top of that it would change every month and the sun angle changes. So going outside once a month every hour on the hour and then mapping the spot for next year would be made a lot easier if aptera told me which cell, not just the total, was getting the most sun. I would think this issue would also show up for employer parking lots with tall trees. Thanks for bring this feature request before your engineers.

@@jonsek And how would one know a tree was shading the aptera unless a person goes out every hour during the work day and checks? Having an energy gained per solar cell measurement is much easier. On top of that, an energy gained per cell measurement would be great way to tell if a cell goes bad or a short from/to the cell has occurred. Like what was also said, the angle changes during the year. What is a good parking spot for full sun in July may not be a good parking spot in September. Us engineers enjoy data and optimizing things. So having the ability to reset the amount of charge gained to zero to start measuring would be a great feature for us engineers. I put my reservation in myself because I was not enthusiastic about other vehicles that were hybrid or not very friendly for repair and this vehicle from Aptera is solar and not just a battery that has to be plugged in all the time. Add that they have very friendly attitude toward self repair and if you wanted to upgrade your batteries it's not going to cost a second mortgage and the batteries are said to be warranty for 200,000 miles

Me too. I said when something comes along that is not another expensive luxury EV, I'll bite. This offers so much and at a great price. I have no need for a 1000 mile range so the 400 sits right in my price range.

@@ApteraMotors I think its also a legal issue in many jurisdictions. Here in BC we don't even let trucks have their wheels stick out from the body at all - an aptera with uncovered wheels would be far more dangerous

@@malnorice Yes, you can get studded snow tires. I have one in order for year round use in Iowa. The ABS/traction control is superior to anything else on the road. It can sense wheel slip and adjust torque every 2.5 inches of wheel travel.

@kenmcclow8963
@kenmcclow8963 Год назад
The same way you change a tire on any motorcycle. The swingarm is pretty standard although it looks like there will be a jack point in front of the wheel. However since you won't have a spare, you won't be doing it on the side of the road. You could use a plug or tire sealant, or call for a flatbed

Which reminds me, when going through a toll on a paid highway, what category of vehicle does Aptera fall under and what would the effect be on tolls? Like, If I apply for an easy-pass, they have categories like 2 axes, 4 axes, motorcycle and motorcycle with side-car, but I did not see anything about trikes. I assume it will cost less. But I doughnut wanna make any assumptions. 😆

Great video y'all. Part of me wants to see what time this can do on track at a place like Laguna Seca. You know, for science! Randy Pobst likes to get behind the wheel of just about everything and he's been a benchmark driver for so many marques. Really would love to get something like this, a 4-seater would make it a lot easier to say yes to for a family car, but I'd hate to see that spoil the design. I guess the rear doors could gull-wing up and back, would be like dragonfly wings when the doors are open. I'm guessing a DIY builder's option isn't on the table? For those of us that like to tinker and get really well acquainted with their vehicles, getting it in a ready to build kit would be awesome (See Ultima GTR for inspiration).
