@@tomkuchvalek9269 Do you mean the Old Spice Original currently released by Procter & Gamble in Europe, the version they license to Rubicon for manufacture in India or the vintage version from Shulton?
I read a profile of George Clooney where the author remarked about whatever cologne he (the author) was wearing. George Clooney asked, "Do YOU like it?" "Yes," the writer replied. George Clooney gave his trademark smile and said, "Well, that's all that matters."
I’m 36 now and the older scents appeal to me more. Aramis, Terre d Hermès, Yatagan, Versace L’homme. I enjoy wearing these type of woody chypre oriental tobacco type scents compared to the really sweet stuff. There are modern fragrances I really enjoy as well but these old style oriental tobacco aromatics should be revisited. I feel like Aramis could be relaunched as an EDP now and do extremely well.
I used to nick a bit of my Dads Aramis in the late 70's. As much as I could get away with. He passed away recently. I'm going to buy some as a kind of tribute, for reminiscence and the pleasure once again of what is hopefully still a great fragrance.
Oh boy I worked for Aramis on counter in 1988 - 89 and was on counter for the New West launch and yes it was a different bottle, and a very different type of fragrance at the time ....for me the original Aramis is simply stunning I just love the smell, they did a gorgeous soap on a rope, and shaving soap with brush set .....beautiful gentlemen’s products..you took me back great memories! ...thank you
Last year, In the Macy's Herald Square Store, I asked a male rep at the Estee Lauder counter where the Aramis was (all the female fragrance counters for each house have the male fragrances in glass, too). The rep asked me "What is Aramis?". I explained to him that it was released by Estee Lauder in 1964. He then made a quick call and told me that Aramis was only sold in the men's dept. Oh, how I remember those attractive saleswomen at the men's fragrance counters in the 1980's! They would throw a load of sample vials into my bag with every purchase, and for Father's Day and other holidays, there was usually a comfrey gift set, duffel bag or watch offered as a bonus with the purchase by the major houses.
Wow, I grew up around my uncle (Dad’s brother), and Aramis-Aramis was and still is his signature scent. I’m 45 currently and my uncle is 71 and he is still macking it. Up to my late teens, my Dad used to use English Leather, both the aftershave and cologne, by the house of Dana.
Are you sure your dad didn't have the Mem version of English Leather? Tney sold it to Dana. It was much stronger and came in a beautiful wooden box. That's what I wore in high school in the 1970's until I switched to Aramis in my junior year of college (it was so strong back then that I reeked of it when entering a classroom!).
A decade before you, English Leather was my signature scent in high school until I graduated to Aramis around my junior year of college during the Saturday Night Fever period. Along with the shampoo and conditioner, I reeked of it when entering classes!
I'm late for the review, but spring is just around the corner. Love love the recommendations and reviews plus the equivalent of womens!!! I'm 48 and grew up with New West for women until 1994 that I switch to Samsara,Poison, Beautiful and every cologne from Liz Claiborne... ♥️ I don't mind to wear some "masculine" colognes (my husband actually likes it). This video brought so many memories. Thanks you
I was an altar boy when I was a kid. Our priest would always splash on Aramis before mass and I loved the scent. When mass had ended, I quickly extinguished the altar candles and ran to the sacristy to steal a splash while the priest greeted the parishioners as they left the church. I currently have Devin (my favorite), Tuscany, Havana and 900.
Just got Havana and am loving it on paper, will try on skin in a little while. I also own Tuscany and love it too especially that drydown. Great video!
Aramis is my favorite house: original Aramis, Devin, Havana, and 900 in that order are my favorites. A young lady working at the fragrance counter when I bought some Aramis gave me a Devin set as a gift-with-purchase many years ago when I was a young Student Naval Aviator. She could tell I was just starting out on my own and took pity on me. Your videos are uniformly informative and enjoyable - keep ‘em coming!
Thank you for this video! I just started my fragrance journey at the start of the year at 48 years old. I’ve had one here and there but never gave much thought to it. My grandmother raised me so I was around some Estée Lauder products growing up. I actually did purchase Havana and love it. Was hoping for a rundown of the whole line so many thanks. Slowly learning my fragrance identity and what I like. I’m drawn to long lasting scents with depth and character no matter when they came out. Thanks again and enjoy your weekend.
I have to say, I really appreciate your review. I currently have in my collection Tuscany. I am learning to look for reviews on colognes before making any purchase. Your review has helped with my next selection. (Havana)
Just picked up Havana based on this review. On me, not a tobacco scent. Right up front, cinnamon and leather, with a wilting carnation trying to get a word in. Slight notes on citrus. A sparkle of cumin that adds some interest and funk. Probably worth the $20 I paid for it, but it really needs some more sandalwood to give it some depth of soul and balance out the cinnamon. The note of cinnamon hanging out there alone could give one a headache.
Great job Sebastian. I too have fond memories of original Aramis. I was 7 or 8 years old standing on the edge of the tub watching my dad shave before work. Then he’d splash the After Shave and man he smelled great.
Wow man what a throw back New West in that original bottle 😱 good times. Your the only one I know who has ever brought up New West not to mention that nostalgic bottle 👏👏👏
Aramis /Aramis is my first fragrance. I am 51 now and I started wearing it at age 14. My grandmother would work the fragrance counter at Foley's during the holidays and would give each of the men in the family a large bottle of Aramis for Christmas. I was not considered old enough for cologne,so I would steal sprays from my dad's bottle, until he realized I was the main one wearing it and just gave me the bottle. When I was in college I was given a bottle of New West and it quickly became my favorite
I'm 32, the original Aramis is in my top 5 fav fragrances ever. I also love 900, New West, and Havana. I vaguely remember Devin, but can't comment on it. I havent tried JHL or Tuscany.
Great review on one of the greatest fragrance brands ever. Everlasting classics. The original Aramis is my signature fragrance since decades. A true masterpiece. Great also that you show the feminine equivalents. Thanks for this awesome video, Sebastian. 👍🏻
I wore JHL in college when it first came out. It was such a rich, dense fragrance, very much in the spirit of Opium, as you mentioned in the review. Also, Lagerfeld by Karl Lagerfeld was another one that I wore that was popular in that era and I believe would be considered an Oriental Spicy as well. Great review, Sebastian. I love revisiting vintage fragrances.
Every single fragrance from this collection is worth buying. It's just a matter of personal taste, but all of them smell great and is well made; in my opinion.
My dad passed away last year, and im in the same boat as you, where the OG Aramis is so nostalgic. Pops swore up and down that this was the greatest cologne period. Whenever he wanted to impress, he wore aramis. After exploring fragrances on my own, its not my favorite, but i still have the bottle my dad gave me when i was a teen , and it still brings up good memories.
I love the Aramis range in general but especially Devin which is ridiculous value. Worn it since the 80s and must have gone through 10+ bottles. Was a real powerhouse but is still very strong today. Currently enjoying Tobacco Reserve and just ordered Modern Leather. Would love to see a review of these.
I have a current Aramis Classic bottle and a vintage one labeled cologne...probably 80's. They are very very similar, the vintage one is slightly smokier, which could be due to aging...but the actual isnt any less solid or lacking in depth. Performance is stellar. Dont know how it was in the 60's or 70's but it hasn't changed much in the last 30 years.
I love devin, on my skin it doesn't turn animalic, same has smelling on the spray, but less is more with this one, more then 3 sprays it turns a bit animalic and too sharp
I came across a gift set this week of four of these fragrances from probably 20 years ago. They were in the original box in a drawer, and seem to have held up. What a great coincidence that you just released this video! Thanks!
I grew up in the 80tees and re-discovered Aramis New West ~1 year ago and I find it still wearable and very fresh and clean. I like to wear it in the office but especially for the gym. I really can recommend that fragrance too.
I started wearin Aramis in the early 90s and i agree it was a little heavier......i still wear it along with Havana and the clear aramis i forget the name of
I love Azuree and Estée Lauder makes it I’m happy to say. I love Aromatics too one spray will last you all day. I liked the Aramis from the past the new Aramis is missing something not as potent as the original. Loved your presentation...
Aramis Havana is the best dry tobacco fragrance around. All other tobacco fragrances tend to be accompanied by sweet notes (vanilla, cherry, honey). I do not really get it why, if I open my humidor, there is no sick sweetness to smell inside. Havana retains the dry bitter herbal quality of tobacco leaves and in combination with patchouli makes sure you will keep getting wafts of this green pleasure whole day. Really unique tobacco offering.
Recently got the New West after stumbling upon it on Fragrantica, while looking for some other stuff. And it is beautiful! It is definitely more woody than aquatic, but still very fresh. Masculine, a bit bitter and dry. Could you maybe suggest, I am looking for something similar, but a bit warmer and with more prominent wormwood/artemisia note? Anyway, thanks for the review, very inspiring and informative!
Aramis Original is one of my all time favorites and one of my first fragrances ever. I haven't had a bottle in a few years. Thanks for reminding me how awesome it is. I am going to purchase it along with a few others in this collection.
Recently purchased DEVIN....one of my favs growing up !!! But this newer one is soooo weak !!!! And the "original" is so damn expensive. I am dying to have JHL again....I had that one when it was first launched.....powerhouse and almost too much for me back then !!! But I have never forgotton it in my scent memory. Have only sniffed the newer version @ Dillards dept store...and I found it close to the original...but...toned down. Thanks for reviewing these !!! Cheers !!!
Greeting Sebastian, I just watched your video about ARAMIS, once again I see another coincidence between you and I about fragrances, this house for many reasons I'm very bond to it, my father and being the youngest of the family I sew all my brothers wearing all these fragrances and just seen a bottle or hearing the name brings memories instantly for that I thank you for creating this video, keep bringing this great videos 🙏👍😍
The last two re-released in the "Gentleman's" bottles (the six you have in the vid) by Aramis are Life and Always (men). Not sure if Life had a concubine but Always did and when you put his & hers on the counter beside each other the bottles made a circle, the symbol of eternity. Also there was (and still is, I believe) a Tuscany person Donna yet it smelled completely different than Uomo or U. Forte. There are many other modern ones I'd love to see Impeccable, Bermuda Tonic, Black, Cool, Gentleman, Gold...there are a bunch listed on Parfumo under the Aramis house. Loved this video and you're one of the few I didn't stop following when the pandemic hit! Smell swell & be well, my fragrant neither! Hugs, John R. (Gypsy Parfumista)
My step father use to wear Aramis late 1970, the oakmoss was fierce you could smell it 10 feet away. I recently bought some and it does not last very long at all or I cannot smell it and no one comments when I wear it. I also noticed that on me the dry down is slightly sweet after a couple of hours which I don't like so I spray it on my clothes. I worse a lot of Estee Lauder fragrances, Estee, Azuree, alliage but my favourite was White Linen. Estee Lauder should have made a mans version of that.
I've now gone through two Aramis bottles and one bottle of Devin. I just ordered another Devin bottle. Amazing stuff! 900 and JHL also pique my interest.
I've always seen these in the shops but never decided to try any of them , appreciate your thoughts on so many from the brand. I appreciate learning from you as always :)
I bought Devin based on your recommendation. The start is not pleasant but dry down is ok. The good thing is that the longegiviry is very low so it does not last. I put it on when I want to punish myself. I have hated this so much that I have started to love it. All things said, great review. Thanks
Thank you for doing this. Just one correction: The black bottle of Tuscany is not the same as Tuscany the one you showed. It is the "FORTE" version which is more woody than aromatic.
Im in la now, from norway and i found aramis 1966 on Walgreens , we dont have aramis in regular stores so got a bit excited i guess and played a lot more than you need for aramis now , tihi🤭, but i dont care, i love it! Its not near as scary as everyone is saying! Yes its bold and Woody but so are almost all my fragrances, i found it pretty balanced and subtle, kind of a longer lasting Dunhill for men, absolutely a new favorite in my growing fragrance collection 🥰 and it’s easier to find than Dunhill 34😅
I wore Tuscany every year for almost 30 years, and till today it is still my value for money and the best classic fragrance that never gets boring. Today I am mostly on Amouage perfumes but still, have this bottle in my collection
I was here for Havana because I saw it in my local store for the equivalence of 25 dollars. Unfortunately, SEBASTIEN didn't say much about the actual fragrance. But I think from the little said, I will go ahead and pull the trigger. Thanks for the video sir.
The current version of 900 is not the same as the original. It’s the same case with Devin. Those were both great fragrances, but for whatever reason, Estée Lauder decided to revamp the formula. It’s just not the same.
If you’re looking for one fragrance from this line I’d suggest Devin. It has so many notes of so many heavy hitters from that era. I get bits of dunhill, polo green, and kouros. It’s so rich and is an insane value. I’m telling you if a niche house put this out it would a ton of rewards and cost 350.00 us.
Great review, one of my favourite houses. Its the same here in London with JHL..I fear they are being discontinued but I wear Cinnabar which is fantastic! Also there was a female version of Havana.
I thought they were all discontinued back in 2015. They haven't been on the Estee Lauder Aramis page in years and authorized retailers haven't carried them for quite awhile (other than JHL). I should email the company and ask.
JHL is def my favorite and its unfortunate that it is the most expensive one... To me it has also a major animalic undertone. By the way, in Europe there is an Eau de Toilette Concentree version of the original Aramis available. Just like JHL not cheap. I sampled it at a department store and it has way more depth, probably it is like the EdT used to smell like.
Excellent stuff. I bought mine at retail in Macy's after a 15% discount the first month it was released. Nice strength, too. Other than appearing at TJ Maxx for $25 for a few months in 2019, it hasn't reached the discounters.
i do own the havana and the guys at work always telling me they smell me coming ,,, the new west is real beautiful too but it doesnt last like the havana for me atleast tuscany smell beautiful but again like the new wist it doesnt last long sadly but the smell is amazing of those 3 i had
I enjoy the fragrance Aramis..and also Paco Rabonne. I would be embarrassed to wear this in public and generally will spritz a little on my bed sheets or pillows when I'm in the mood..if out and about Christian Dior Sauvage..
Aramis Devin a bit animalic due to castorium in it but after a while it is very manly fragrance hard to find these days Stays with my skin whole day even on moderate hot humid day indoors.Altough a cologne but its strength is like Edt.A Classic fragrance.Aramis Tuscany Umo is fine Italian lemon based fine fragrance but projection and performance is weak although this is pricey among the whole line Original Aramis does not have that strength these days but a frosted bottle which bears Aramis concentrated name on it is said to be stronger, but due to pandemic not easily available here in India.Aramis tobbaco reserve is a finest creation with green tobbaco note and it lasts more than 12 hours a winter fragrance when you wear it it gives you a very warm posh rich person feel.Aramis newest creation Special Blends is not available these days which is again spicy complex with lots of notes and longer lasting.Aramis 900 lasts with a manly rose and patchouli note whole day even during hot summers in India.Whole line of Aramis smells natural not synthetic which is why Aramis fragranes are so close to my heart.Aramis line is pole apart from the rubbish that is being targeted at youth these days. And very few people know that Aramis are masters in the art of blending
A lovely overview Sebastian! I've been waiting for JHL to show up at discounters for like 2 years! I suppose I can wait a little longer. Very interested to try New West too. That'll probably be my next pickup.
The Latest Aramis offerings, Tobacco Reserve and Special Blend are fantastic, especially for the price. Modern Leather is pretty decent too considering the price. I need to repurchase Devin, JHL and 900 they’ve been too long overdue for replacement. For the modern picks the ones you’ll probably need to grab off eBay are Black, Gentlemen, Life (one I need to get myself) Cool, and probably Modern Leather. Tobacco Reserve gets sold out at discounters a lot. Adventurer and voyager are also at discounters.
Other than TJ Maxx or Marshalls, what discounter had Tobacco Reserve? I've never seen it on Fragrancenet or Fragrancex. I bought it from Macy's when it first came out. How's the longevity for Special Blend?
I was thinking of getting Aramis classic for xmas when my local discounter received some JHL. I've been looking for a cinnamon spicy frag for the Winter months to balance out my wardrobe. And having Aramis would be redundant. Looks like my kind of fragrance if it's from the 80s!
Just got confirmation from Estee Lauder yesterday that JHL has been discontinued. Absolutely amazing. Another example . . the original Michael by Michael Kors, Escada Pour Homme, Tsar by Van Cleef & Arpels. . . . complete disrespect to the customer. If you can find JHL - sans outrageous prices on ebay, I suggest you pick up.
@@jeffreyl.wiseman2597 thanks for these details. I just peaked at what my wife bought me for Christmas (shhhh...don't tell her ) and it's JHL! If I really like it i might go back to my local discounter another get another bottle. I was disappointed when she went to buy me Antaeus and it was sold-out. Now I don't care. ♥
When did Aramis change its classic formula? I've been using Aramis products for over 40 years - at my then-fiance's insistence, and thus throughout the entirety of our marriage to-date. I do not remember when I bought my latest bottle, but I purchased it as a previous bottle dropped below half full (to ensure I didn't run out); since I only use it as after-shave, the penultimate bottle lasted another year or so and, therefore, it's possible I bought the latest bottle as far back as 2019. This latest bottle is a clear change from their traditional formula - it smells FAR more like a woman's scent than the Aramis I've worn for the previous 40+ years. My question is more rhetorical at this point - a matter of curiosity - because I cannot wear this new "feminine" formula . . . and maybe I'm a little curious if other Aramis aficionados are similarly disappointed in this formula change.
