This is a easy fix only if you know what to look for and where to look. Thanks to ArcadeRepairTips.com for their online help. No way could I have fixed it without them.
This game is running Street Fighter now but it is an original Defender cabinet with an original Defender monitor. Its amazing that it is still running. I wonder how long it will last?

I've experienced that kind of collapse on my 27" Panasonic CRT which was bought back in 1999. Seven years later (2006) the experience was the beginning.

had that same issue on a NEC Multisync CRT that i found off the curb, fixed it by replacing the capacitors, it's now my main CRT on my DOS/Win9x Pentium 133 retro gaming PC. It's in not that bad condition despite it being on a curb.

HBT, what are the differences between a Raster monitor compared to a Vector Monitor? what is the B+ voltage used for in monitors?

I had a collapsed vertical scan on my old CRT TV one time. Before sending it in to repair, I noticed that by quickly moving your eyes up and down you could see a full picture! The movement essentially 'scans' the line across your retina lol

Tomsonic41 weird! I'll try that next time.
@stevenking2980

Yeah it scans, and the vertical voltage sets the frequency.

I have sound but no picture, it was a line streight across but now it's gone with only a blurry spot the size of a quarter in the middle

On a monitor like this Wells Gardner 19K4600, its a good idea to do a cap kit at the same time. The electrolytic caps often fail from age. New cap kits are less than $10 and can make the monitor more reliable. That connector you re-soldered is going bad, the plastic is breaking down on it from heat and age.

Yeah, but he'll only do that if he has to; it's a lot of work!

LOL, way to try to "fix" this problem by replacing cracked solder joints with cold ones! :-P
@Meekimotosyoutubechannel
@Meekimotosyoutubechannel 5 лет назад
but what made the solder joints crack in that particular spot? and the melted brittle connector..seems like youd wanna fix the heat problem like perhaps regrease that IC to the metal heatsink first ? ..or the cold solder joint will happen again..ps ya goofed with your iron on pin 1 and 2..didnt heat the pin first..add two more cold solder joints to the list :)

How many cans of compressed air do you think it'd have taken to clean that off? 10? 15?
@Dzonemp
@Dzonemp 8 лет назад
+Mikalhvi You can buy a nice small 110 volt compressor for less than $100 and have all the compressed air you want.
@Lousidity
@Lousidity 8 лет назад
+Dzonemp sure, but I was specifically thinking of the comically large quantity of cans someone would go through on that.

Some of that dust looked so caked on, to me, that I was surprised the vacuum cleaner helped much at all! I think those cans might not have been strong enough to do much. I had bet that it would have taken the higher pressure of a typical industrial compressor to do this job!

can someone tell me what would cause my 1997 zenith tv to cut off 10 to 20 seconds after i turn it on? Happens every time.
@suzakule
@suzakule 8 лет назад
+Thomas Setzer that means its going into "safe mode" as in one or more of the parameters that must must be met for it to fully turn on can not be met. IE there is a serious fault detected and is shutting down and is going into a protected mode to prevent any major damage like fire or the like. for example HV fault or CRT fault or loss of vert sweep or the like.

Bootstrap capacitor in vertical deflection. Electrolytic failure. Typical for age.

not trying to be a negative nancy but why on earth would you use a vacuum anywhere near a circuit board or a old monitor... that static discharge could run the risk of frying thee entire set up... other than that, nicely done sir
@suzakule
@suzakule 8 лет назад
+dizko4rumthehuds You clearly know nothing of what you are talking about. once discharged, the CRT and related areas are quite safe. there is NO risk of any discharge, because they have already been zeroed to no charge.

+Suzaku NoMiko Well, I'd rather use an air compressor or canned air
