Today, we dive into axle swaps. Particularly, if swapping to one ton axles is worth it. We take a look at what we at Barnes 4WD recommend when it comes to tire size, vehicle weight, and horsepower numbers. This is just a general recommendation from what we have seen work, and more importantly what we have seen not work. Click the link below to check out all of the axle accessories that we offer.

Nice to see a video on this topic done with no BS. Axle fads are a weird thing and I know everyone has seen a Rig or two with stock axles tear it up (XJs) but as long as your enjoying 4 wheeling, the outdoors, and learning something it doesn't matter what ya got.... unless you have rockwells... then your awesome.

Dana 30 locked under an XJ for 6 years now. Almost every trail in SoCal, plus Rubicon and lots of miles in the dunes. No issues other than 1 lost U joint. It’s stronger than people think and if you respect the fact that you can’t just hoon it up everything, perfectly fine for a light Jeep on 35s

I agree with the majority of everything you said except the cost of the JK dana 44. People have lost their ang minds on the 44 out of a JK Rubicon, they think they are made of gold in stock trim. I can build a junk yard 60 for half of what these guys are asking for a stock Rubicon 44. And if you don't get a Rubicon 44 you have to buy shafts, lockers, axles etc with them as well.

Currently have a 30 under my xj that i bought for 75 dollars and threw 200 bucks in Barnes parts at it and called it a day. Thing does great for an xj on 33s.

great video guys, thanks. When I first bought my JKU 3 years ago the internet experts with V8 powered 1ton Jeeps tell you that you can't even get off the gravel roads with a Dana 30. It's crazy how many internet experts out there trash the dirty 30. Given the front axle is only pulling the Jeep and assisting the rear axle under factory 3.6L power it has done well for me on 35's and I even have it locked with a Yukon Grizzly and 4.56 gears. Welded on your inner C braces and lower control skids. In the next year or two I want to build up a JK dana 44 front axle and jump up to 37's.

100% right however, anyone into this community should own a grinder and a welder. And if u do u can look out for some cheap ass 1 tons. Ive got my d60/14b for 150$. Some chopping and rewelding brackets along wit some homemade cv driveshafts u can have alot of fun with a 1 ton rig. Remember, bigger tires bigger parts mean more fun. It depends on how much fun you want to have

I didn't even know that the Dana 50 existed until 3 days ago. I bought a 2000 F250 thinking they were all D60/Sterling 10.5. My tow rig is a 2011 F350 with a Super 60 and Sterling 10.5. I plan on putting the 2000 axles under an XJ or Wrangler (TJ or YJ). Likely on 38" tires. This will be an off-road recovery vehicle (Think Matt's off-road recovery Banana). Should I scrap the Dana 50 and look for a Dana 60?

Hey Guys, a D60 is wider so you won't need spacers with bigger tires and the brakes being designed for a for a heavy full size truck are going to have better stopping power with that heavier wheel and tire package (especially bead locks) than stock JK brakes. I see a ton (no pun intended) of SD fronts and GM 14 bolt rears on JK's lately, not to play devil's advocate... Great video!
@barnes4wd
@barnes4wd 2 года назад
definitely good points! If you're wanting to go to bigger than 37's then you might as well go tons in a JK. However, wheels with the correct backspacing and offset and big brakes are not going to be near as expensive as a one ton swap. So if you're staying 37's and below, I would just go upgraded brakes and wheels that have the correct offset to not rub.

I ran 37s on my jk d30 for 60000 miles then I put a lunch box locker in and destroyed it and the d44 rear all at the same time it was awesome Now I've put in rubicon axles I think a trus and gusset kit will make it last my lifetime

Now that 35 spline shafts can be in a 44 my JKU will be getting a rock jock 44 front because it’s super beefy tubes are stronger then the jk “44” and 35 spline. Can run 37’s without worry

the problem im facing is, my front axle was destroyed and needs to be replaced, i have on 05 LJ and finding an axle for it is tough bc the prices for a dana 44 front is absurd. then i look at ton prices and i can get 2 axles for the price of one dana 44. im debating on getting a built axle from ECGS or getting tons. both the cost of a new axle or getting tons installed is about the same so thats where my problem lies. i want to go 37s eventually and i know a built dana 44 can handle it. but when the costs are the same it becomes a little harder for me to chose. tons are heavy but will be harder to break on 37s, a ecgs axle with be lighter but easier to break. this decision is harder than i thought

most fabricators didn't learn to fab on the big expensive items. they fab'd the cheap stuff and worked their way up to the big expensive stuff. it's cheaper to learn on the 30 than to fab a 60 wrong.

So my experence running 1 tons on a offroad rig is yes they are strong, they offer more options on tires and ratios.. but, ,,,, if you run them on a uniboy chassis, your going to rip the sheetmetal brackets out of it. Secondly, you are going to be investing in hubs and driveshafts more because you just moved the weak spot down the road. Third, a 14 bolt rear end is around 600 lbs loaded, and a dana 60 front can be up to 400+ lbs.. so you just added 1/2 ton in weight you gotta push thru the trails. Dana 44 is barely a 3/4 ton axle, its good for up to 35 tires reliably, but needs work for 37 tires. Ive seen 4 cyl jeeps snap axles in low range on dana 30 running 33" tires. Just remember, everytime you beef up a componet, you just sent the torque to the next weakest part.

Best way to beef up a 30 is truss it knuckle to knuckle ..like a jeep speed build..you might loose ground clearance…I hope Barnes will develop a under axle truss…takes the flex out of the axle..aka ring gear deflection…

All the money people spend on these swaps they could just buy something with 1 ton axles.
@erenbecomesdovecrying6016
@erenbecomesdovecrying6016 Год назад
Which means buying a truck or other useless vehicle. The point of swapping an axle is to get something stronger under a vehicle more suitable for offroad, something lighter weight with a shorter wheelbase.
@drewolm
@drewolm Год назад
@@erenbecomesdovecrying6016 How, HOW, would that vehicle be useless? It’s twice as capable. Does a lot of things better. Seriously, a 3/4 or 1 ton solid axle truck regular cab, even extended cab can just about anywhere any of these other vehicles go. They’re already built for all the extra weight people want to throw on them. Build what makes you happy. That’s what makes it fun. I do know this though, I’ve a got 3/4 ton crew cab that goes where these fancy rigs go.
@erenbecomesdovecrying6016
@erenbecomesdovecrying6016 Год назад
@Dre_Sted everyone except truck obsessed people know trucks are useless, your truck doesn't go everywhere these rigs do. You think they do because you think you've been to some of these places, the simplest explanation for your confidence is that you haven't been to a place that would stop your truck because of the wheelbase. Your truck goes everywhere you want it to go, which is fine but it does not, in fact, go everywhere. Trucks aren't built for carrying weight either. Almost all trucks have a smaller load capacity than an SUV. Trucks are built for PULLING weight. A regular cab only holds 2 people, if I want to take my wife and dog, dogs or other people trucks are useless as passenger vehicles. The only thing trucks do well is hold things in the bed, you can just get a utility trailer for that and have a better SUV.

The whole world is shifting towards 40" tires. If you are running 33"-35" tires....are you really even off-roading? Guys are running that size tire on their SxS.😄 Kinda hard to run the big paths/trails when they are rutted up by significantly bigger tires.
