Are Extraction Shooters Gaming's Next Big Thing?

The only extraction shooter that I enjoy was Halo Reach's headhunter game mode (team or FFA). Frag other players, collect their skulls and extract to the goal ASAP. Other players can frag you and take all your skulls. Halo Infinite needs this game mode to chase that trend.

It been quite some time since I've heard any one accuse Bungie of making a good game. Considering their tack records, Marathon will release incomplete with lots of monetization and a promises that the contentious pass and DLC marketed as expansion will finish the game they they already didn't finish when they sold it.

Great video! My take on this is that it's not just extraction shooters that are becoming big. Tactical shooters and milsims (e.g. Squad, Arma 3, INS:S, Ready or Not, Ground Branch, OPERATOR, etc.) are slowly becoming a big thing in gaming because of Tarkov's devs attention to realism despite being an extraction shooter. I think they deserve a video of their own.

I think you would love Hunt: Showdown - one of the more unique approaches to the extraction shooter that I have seen in a while. Great video!

Extraction shooters sound like going in the wilderness in RuneScape to do a quest with the possibility of losing everything.

Division Survival is an absolute vibe. I dont really like survival style game modes but that one is top tier

im already tired of extraction shooters. Battle royals ruled the game space for too long, and extraction shooters just feel too similar. i miss when AAA games had good stories.

I think the death of extraction shooters is the genre will be oversimplified. What makes Tarkov and Hunt work is that they have lots of different gear that makes your loadout truly matter. Not to mention the traits your character can unlock, and then lose. There's a depth to the equipment and characters that makes building up your character actually compelling. DMZ works because CoD already has tons of guns, equipment, and killstreaks that are already balanced to fight each other, so it just works. However, it seems like other franchises just wouldn't have the depth or variety to make hoarding equipment feel satisfying. If all you have is 5 different guns (AR, SMG, LMG, Sniper, Shotgun), and they're easily accessible each drop, then it becomes very difficult to care about losing your gear, especially if your equipment just boils down to light/heavy armor. While that makes it more accessible, it will slowly start to miss the point, and most people will just stick to the big three as time goes on (Tarkov, Hunt, and DMZ), much like the Battle Royale genre. Other studios/publishers will likely just think having loot to extract will be all the game needs to succeed. I don't think Marathon will be anything special. Bungie has missed the mark on both Destiny launches, has made tons of shady decisions with Destiny 2, and turning a retro FPS into an extraction shooter just shows they're only looking to follow trends, rather than do anything unique. They're not the same Bungie who made Halo or Marathon, and they clearly don't have the same drive to push their game design to the limit.

I enjoy dmz, but generally hate live service games. Dmz isn’t as bad since it’s free to play, but I still hate the fomo by design progression style. I’m too busy for that.

As someone who has 4000 hours in Hunt it's probably the best extraction shooter that has come out

I think extraction shooters are gonna remain a niche rather than explode. DMZ (and WZ2/MW2 as a whole) flopping didnt do the genre any favors, but it doesnt have nearly the amount of hype and/or accessibility to hook a massive casual audience. DMZ was the closest we've gotten to a widespread and accessible extraction shooter and it has flopped harder than the fish from the Spongebob intro. Escape from Tarkov, while cool, is extremely inaccessible as it is not at all directed towards any casual audience. Vigor is more accessible but I don't hear anyone talking about that game. If extraction shooters want a chance at being blown up into the spotlight, they'll need to have a "Fortnite" era. Say what you will about Fortnite, but its the definite reason battle royales exploded despite them being more niche and less accessible beforehand. Extraction shooters dont need to be a slapped on half finished Call of Duty mode to become popular, there needs to be a standalone game that is easy to understand, not convoluted with a bunch of over complicated mechanics, and it 100% needs to be on all platforms at launch.

TBH I would rather have a trend that has PVE than the stupid thing that was battle royal

Because of playing battle royale all these years I can't enjoy traditional shooting games like cod or battlefield i need a reason to survive in a game so Extraction Shooters fits in nicely if you played battle royale for to long

I think trends in general now days just don't last as long. Especially on the internet since everything is faster on the internet. Shorter attention spans.

Speaking from an OUTSIDER perspective, yes. It feels like its a natural progression of "battle royal", its just its Battle Royal WITH OBJECTIVES and a GOEL. Plus, if you think about it, Extraction games HIT that "gambling" Dopamine rush where everything you bring with you CAN BE LOST if you DIE, where as everything you bring back with you IS SAFE. PVE/PVP Exfil shooters seem like the kind of games i would play. I'm just not the kinda guy who shoots everything that moves, but it does sound pretty neat to be IN A WORLD where other players are doing their own thing just as you are and if you happen to come across someone else, well ya never know whats gonna happen. Adds a nice bit of "mystery" to the gameplay. Plus nothing is stopping you from "teaming up" and working together.

DMZ is getting more deeper recently, still needs way more depths but they are trying! There are some crazy rare almost impossible to get skin where you will need multiple items and multiple extractions and just a lot of fucking shit to be able to get it.

This was the worst part of Division, where you could only get good loot in the fenced off area, but then every man and his dog would come gunning for you to stop you getting away with it. That sucks to my mind.

IMO, Extraction shooters are way too stressful for the average/casual player, I do not think they will ever be a big Genre. Although it will stay for a while as it has it niche fanbase. And BTW thank you for the great video.

i hope not, every time something becomes the "next big thing" they ruin it by making every game that comes out pretty much a clone of whatever was popular beforehand so we never actually get new and innovative games just a bunch of games trying to be like each other

The cycle was the best one and they did not even fight to stay on. They gave up way to easy, free to play should not exist ,hackers is to big of a problem. some IP baning should happen, and IP ban is in effect in all online games,pvpve games, you cheat you are banned from all online games for 2 years, then the problem would go away.

I don't know about the next big thing. Extraction shooters are fun for a little while but they feel like they're missing something. The gameplay loop of loot extract repeat just isn't enough imo.

I honestly don’t understand how people have “fun” playing anything tactical, like at times (more like most of the times) even tac shooters are boring asf. Maybe I just have a life outside of gaming and even though I’ve been gaming for well over a decade I couldn’t see myself caring so much for a multiplayer shooter with no actual end goal. Single players atleast have stories that you could potentially give a shit about.

I hope they are. Because im a huge fan of extraction shooters. But only full loot pvp extraction shooters like EFT, The cycle frontier or marauders. Hunt showdown sucks hard because you dont get shit for killing players.

In the future the game tech will be like the 'holodeck' or 'ready Player One' and you'll be able to actually enter the game world, instead of just looking at it.

It will be the next big thing.. As br were.. My main hope now is Division Heartland.. If they can put more effort into the health system and pvp it has everything needed to make a successfull extraction shooter. We need a new Tarkov. The devs are not equipped to fix the game.

Lets hope extraction will not be a trend. People with potato pc or other problem wont even get a change. they will lose and lose and they will stop play, then will be only the tryharders ( at least for pvp) for example some games will have a PVP VE like "Pioner" but half of map is only pve and other will have the pvpve, so people can play the mode they want or just chill a little killing mobs. others that try to go into the RPG style. well Warframe for example could be a Extraction but tons and tons of pve. and pvp mostly dead. but still good in he's way Devs instead of what they are doing in extractions, for example when we die, we lose "all" could be something like, we go into the map do the things and what we have equiped we keep and what we have on bag or inventory we lose. and if its a resource the other people could just keep and sell for coins or give back via market. and ammo medkits .... they could keep for them.. For me full extraction its a battle royal where u live or you leave until u get to a point.... so as a gamer i hope extractions or they are deep and have been tested and thinked or just extract because yes. well give me the old pvp

Nothing I've seen of Dead Drop has inspired confidence. I expect Arc Raiders to be the cream of the crop (easily my most anticipated game) and Marathon the top contender (based on Bungie... it'll at least be big budget and have AAA polish).

Dude, the division started the trend of extraction shooter. Wtf are you saying ubisoft is jumping on the trend that they themselves created with the dark zone first and then the survival? Tarkov didn't even release in 2016 where ubisoft was already doing extraction shooters.

No extraction shooter will ever come close to Tarkov. You may get one that’s more “fun”. But the nature of that alone is why tarkov is so incredible. A casual spoon fed extraction shooter will not be rewarding like tarkov and keep people coming back. A part of what makes tarkov so damn hard hitting, is it’s gritty, brutal, deep gameplay and design. Tarkov has more depth than probably ever other extraction shooter combined.

COD's DMZ has become Warzone. Before people would do missions or collect items, in fact at the beginning when only El Mazrah was available I didn't even know there are other players on the map. Now, people hunt each other, nobody does missions or collect crap because there is no point. Why craft items if you can just pick good vests off others and rest doesn't matter.

To days "manly" generation of males is too thin skinned to handle extraction shooters, they'd rather cry about how barbie is victimizing them and god knows who else they think is out to "get them".

Ehh this is objective (no pun intented) but Extraction Shooters are way too basic. It's a safe way to get people playing, no risks at all. It's far from unique. At least in my opinion. I think something new and refreshing like BattleBit would be something that people want. Sure the gameplay isn't "new" but more like, brought back from the dead. And yes, people do not care about visuals as they have proven. It's about mechanics, at least for the older "veteran" gamers.

Its hard for me to play other games since I started playing Tarkov. Nothing compares to that game for me.

Tarkov just isn't accessible and DMZ is too causal. There simply isn't an inbetween. DMZ lacks the part of the game that makes it feel alive, like permanent upgrades or that feeling of ''oh nice I found a GPU, which I need to upgrade this or that''. There is no economy. The way it should work is you have to purchase the weapon, the attachments, grenades, everything should be purchasable. DMZ just feels lame and Tarkov feels too convoluted. There is no point in having 100 types of ammo, when 75% of those ammo types aretrash and unusable.

People have been saying this ever since Tarkov took off. It might be but idc shut up. PvP games have been in a doom spiral recently only ones I actually still enjoy are Vr games
