Are fan remakes the only good remakes? 

My friends and I plan to make a low-budget adaptation of Sword Art Online. Not as fans, but as people who vehemently hate it more than anything else in the world.

There was a thing released on RU-vid a couple months ago in which about 100 independent animators were each given a few seconds of audio from a single episode of Sailor Moon. The result was 'Moon Animate Makeup' and it's one of the most visually fascinating things I've ever seen. It's both bizarre and artful and I would really recommend you check it out because just describing it can't do it justice.

Going off on a tangent here but this put me in mind of things like fanfiction and fanart too. To paraphrase you're line, the act of loving something so much you want to recreate it, really ties in. I think that the main difference in thought is that hollywood remakes are often trying to change and replace the origional movie, whereas fan remakes are more about reliving and loving their memory.

Episode VII is not a remake: it is a continuation. There have been tons of interpretations of what happens after Episode VI, and Episode VII would be the assumedly canonical version of these interpertations

A while back there was a shot for shot remake of a Sailor Moon episode, that featured over 250 artists and their styles. It's called "Moon Animate Make-Up!"

It's a similar thing to fan covers in music, say, on RU-vid. Nobody wants to hear Marilyn Manson covering Personal Jesus but we'll freak out over a sixteen- or seventeen-year-old girl doing a quiet acoustic rendition of it. It gives other fans of the original a more personal connection to the cover (or, more in general, the remake) since it's also being done by a fan rather than another music in the industry.

i did a shot for shot remake of debbie does dallas in my garage with me and 37 cardboard cutouts of Joey Fatone..........i consider it my magnum opus.

It's simple. Big studio-made remakes are subject to a certain hype and expectation. If they don't live up to that expectation, they are widely panned as terrible. However, fan-remakes have no expectations to live up to. They could be good or crap, but the audience doesn't *expect* them to be good, which makes the great fan-remakes that much more impressive.

I think that it's almost impossible to make a remake of something so beloved like starwars or robocop, because fans have standards that are just outrageous (not in a bad way). They are expecting it to be as good or better than the original, which is really hard to capture, when you see something for the first time you don't know what to expect, but with a remake, you know exactly what it should be.

Two remakes I'm particularly unhappy about: - Annie - It Mostly because Tim Curry is in both of them and won't be in the remakes.

If anything I feel like fan remakes are there to recreate that magic the creator once felt upon their initial viewing of the source material. They're trying to express the sort of visceral knee jerk reactions the movie made them feel so others can experience it they way they did. It's an admirable effort and cool as all hell

This reminded me of fan made cartoons. The most I've seen is from the brony fandom. They love the short ones, at most, but the longer they are, the more they judge it. Even though it's just a cartoon on the internet.

Fan remakes are a great expression of the love and obsession we feel towards our favorite movies, but claiming they are the "only good remakes" is a stretch. I'll be the first to admit that most of the time blockbuster remakes tend to be piles of crap, but that doesn't mean every remake that comes out of Hollywood is. Let us not forget the amazing remakes that have to to equal (or even surpass) the original like The Thing, Scarface, Ocean's Eleven, Little Shop of Horrors, The Fly, The Departed, and the list goes on and on. It's not that major production companies are unable to create quality remakes that both pay respects to and modernize the originals, it's just that it takes the right people to do it well. If you look at all of those examples that I listed, they weren't made by just any random forgetful film maker. They were made by people who are considered to be masters of the craft both then and now, and they are also people who are famous for having respect and knowledge of film and it's history.

I'm not sure how I feel about 'fan remakes' like these... a lot of them seem to try to take the 'so bad it's good' route. I never really enjoyed a lot of the Hollywood remakes thought they do have some good ones. Then again they also tend to try to 'modernize' the script which isn't always needed but the movies themselves aren't always that bad.

Has anyone mentioned Yu-Gi-Oh! The Abridged Series and the concept of Campaign Comics yet? They're not examples of remakes exactly, but I feel they kind of belong in this context anyway and are worth mentioning. I'm a big One Piece fan and I'm currently reading Grand Line 3 point 5 every time they update. What I find most appealing about these sorts of projects is that they allowed me to explore a piece of pop culture I love in a fresh way. Sort of like: "Oh, you like the Lord of the Rings and know the story by heart? Well imagine if the entire narrative instead of being carefully constructed by Tolkien was actually just improvised by a bunch of roleplayers. Can you imagine what that would be like? You don't have to! Someone already did. Now go enjoy this story you already love again but from a new and fresh perspective (and also in a different medium)."

I truly enjoy fan-made parodys. My personal favorite is the Dragon Ball Z Abridged series by TeamFourStar. They remain true to the original spirit of the show, and tell the same story with it, but they also have a lot of fun pointing out the sheer absurdity of the source material. I can't even imagine how much effort goes into making each new episode, because they take the footage from the actual show and edit everything down to the last detail, so even the mouths are synced to the dialog that they scripted, and recorded themselves. It is amazing that they are willing to put that much effort into it, and what they put out is a truly enjoyable series. I think that's what makes fan-made remakes so special. You know it isn't about the money or the fame, it so much fun to watch because you know its just a couple of fellow nerds having a few laughs and paying tribute to an old, nostalgic, childhood classic. And that is pretty damn cool. Great episode, shitheel.

Scarface, The Thing, The Blob, The Fly? The 80s had plenty of kickass remakes. As well as some Hammer Horror films. Fan remakes tend to have various advantages: a) We already know and love the source material, so it has familiarity. b) It's free and clearly made with love and passion, so we're more forgiving. If it was an original script/story made by a lot of directors, changing mediums, and actors constantly, frankly that movie would be a piece of crap. So what I'm basically saying is that people are getting away with making shitty films because it's Star Wars. It's still a nice way to start learning to do film and a testament to how much we love Star Wars.

There are a fair share of remakes that are comparable or even better than their predecessors. The 1939 version of "The Wizard of Oz" was the fourth attempt at making that into a movie. John Carpenter's "The Thing" is vastly superior to the original (in my opinion at least). It's easy to get cynical about all the horrid remakes, but that could be said about movies in general. Dozens of terrible movies are made every year, the remakes just get more attention as they have a certain standard to reach.

I find the same thing happens with video game remakes. Many remakes such as Another Metroid II Remake take other game engines, in this case Super Metroid, and remake older games. Nintendo is not going to remake that game anytime soon, because they rather just make a port that will fall flat in comparison. Not only can people remake games, but also remake TV shows into games. Giving us amazing playable experiences like Pokemon Naranja which is a remake of the Pokemon anime season that takes place in the orange islands.

I think that the reason why the quality of fan remakes seem to be better than Hollywood remakes is that fan remakes tend to, or at least try to, maintain the spirit the source material. Likewise, the reason why I think people don't like Hollywood remakes is because directors/screenwriters/actors/etc. want to take the idea in a different direction while making the tone more akin to modern Hollywood's tone. For example, the JJ Abrams's Star Trek films are vastly different in tone and content from the original Star Trek series, which, among other factors, caused fans to be furious. Meanwhile, fan remakes are polar opposites of Hollywood remakes. Hollywood remakes are different in tone/content from the original and have big budgets while fan remakes are identical in tone/content but have no budget. No budget means that they have to get around that no-budget setback with objects around the house; that, in turn, adds a charm to fan remakes.

Something you may have overlooked, or possibly didn’t have time to discuss is the part nostalgia plays in this whole thing regarding remakes. When someone is watching a remake and has a strong sense of love or nostalgia for the original movie, they tend to go in with a predetermined opinion of the remake. A lot of the time, people will walk out of a film that may have been genuinely good, but will say it was terrible because their “nostalgia goggles” blinds them. And this is also why fan remakes are so popular. They’re not made by people who have their own vision on a certain product. You can pretty much ensure that these videos are made by people who have that nostalgia for the movie and run on that alone. And that’s what is so special about fan remakes, they’re by people who love the movie for people who love the movie. But does that mean Hollywood remakes are bad? Well, I wouldn’t think so. Sure, a lot of the time it doesn’t work too well, but put it in the hands of someone with a vision, it can be good. Look at the recent Carrie film. It received a lot of mixed to negative reviews because it wasn’t like the original. Now, one could argue that it didn’t try to be a remake of the classic film and tried to be more of an adaptation of the novel, it also did a lot of things that were different. On its own, it’s a perfectly good movie, but it’s that nostalgia that’ll keep a lot of people from enjoying it almost on principle. And this also goes into discussing remakes of foreign films. Hollywood knows that most people won’t go to the theater to seem a foreign movie, which is one reason for these remakes. Look at movies like The Ring (based on Ringu) and Let Me In (based on Let The Right One In). Both of these are good films, but many will say they’re bad because it’s just not the original. But the fact of it being a remake does cause some comparison between the two films. Can one be superior than the other? Of course. The only problem this really faces is that factor of people blindly saying something is better because it was first, and completely ignoring any merit that the remake may bring to the table.

Don't fan remakes mainly work because of the compare and contrast activity in the viewer's mind between the memory of the original and what you are watching at the moment? I find it hard to imagine that watching a fan remake of a film I've never seen would be anywhere close to entertaining. And can we add Evil Dead 2 to the list of great big-budget remakes? Admittedly a strange circular example, but still.

I would say Cronenberg's remake of Kurt Neumann's 'The Fly' is precisely what should happen in straight-up Hollywood remakes; a completely new take on an existing story of set of characters. [Spoiler Free] Whereas the original had been a somewhat comical though chilling tale of the follies of Science, Cronenberg's remake gave all of the characters a much broader depth of emotion and this ultimately made the film more relatable and thereby more terrifying. (Not that the new body prosthesis didn't help make it more frightening; improved technology is almost always a factor in classic remakes. Sit through some of the first series of Dr Who to see that process in motion.) Essentially it just becomes a chore to sit through the umpteenth retelling of a story if the director takes no new direction with it. And with Empire Uncut you're not just getting one distinct vision of these characters, but ~480 distinct visions and this is what makes it work so well. It hearkens back to our story telling roots; a group of hunter's may have all shared the experience of hunting but it takes all of them around the fire to properly relay it. The story is made richer for it as we can see other's points of views and better understand their biases just through the context with which they paint the shared experience. I think that is what works so well in Empire Uncut, that so many people had a hand in showing how they perceived the events of the original film. Granted most of the shorts in Empire Uncut are skewed toward the comical, they still speak volumes about the individual directors and the strong choices therein.

Sam, you forgot Steve Oedekerk's brilliant "Thumb"-series of remakes: Thumb Wars, Thumbtanic, Bat Thumb and so on. They were all the rage in the early 2000. I did however raise my eyebrows a bit when you said we as a culture own these works. I have some problems with fan entitlement especially when reading such comments like "Michael Bay raped my childhood" with his versions of the Transformers and Ninja Turtles. It's somewhat understandable; part of this entitlement is that it transcends the intrinsic work and its enjoyment of it creating a subculture based on it. But what it also does is that it reduces the author's role or disregards it completely. Just like when Ray Bradbury had a lecture at UCLA and the students flat out told him to his face that he was wrong, his book Fahrenheit 451 wasn't about actual book burning and how TV (and Internet subsequently) sucked, but that the book was actually about censorship. He walked out. Same when "fans" wanted to lynch mob J. K. Rowling for saying Harry Potter and Hermione should have been together - the anger arose presumably because it would disrupt the canon Potter-verse erotic fan fiction. Guys, the characters belong to their authors and they can do whatever they want with them. We're lucky that we even got to know these characters and worlds in the first place. So many artists burn their works or lock them in their desk drawers, sometimes because of harsh self-criticism and sometimes because they fear the works will become misunderstood and create monsters on the internet. As for remakes, some professional ones are often on par if not better than the original. Like Werner Herzog's "Nosferatu" and Steve Soderbergh's "Solaris". There are plenty more great remakes than those.

Remakes are only good when the people in charge of the remake are taking it seriously and wish to celebrate a story rather than earn loads of money. This means that fan remakes will tend to feel better than the commercialized remakes. However, there are surely a few remakes out there that are quite spectacular - the most recent "Star Trek" movies come to mind - and they wouldn't have been successful if Abrams, Pine, Quinto, Saldana, Urban, etc. were not invested in producing something that was an homage to the original movies. As to why we worry about the commercialized remakes: Personally, the worry is what the industry wishes to make canon. Something the "official" remakes have over fan remakes is that they are rather definitive in the plot. We rage against Lucas's "prequels" because the canon tried to change our perception of the characters we know and love, and not for the better. Alternatively, "Star Trek" changed pieces of canon, but in such a way that it was believable and allowed us to still hold to the canon of the previous movies. So the moral of the story is that audiences are accepting of remakes so long as they don't negatively affect the canon that's been put into place.

One thing that I felt was slightly left off was the legal obligations for movie studios to produce in order to keep franchise rights. For example, the latest Spider Man remake was a contractual obligation to be made in that timetable, otherwise they jeopardized losing Spider Man movie rights.

I was surprised when I got to the end of the video that you never mentioned anything about video game remakes! There are tons of remakes that people love and hate from games, just like movies, but it tends to be slightly different than your movie reasoning. A bad remake of a game would be final fantasy 4 for the MANY different devices it's now on; there's like at least 4 different remakes, but I stopped counting after that many times. A good remake of a game would be the HD remake of The Last of Us, for obvious HD textures and allowing the DLC of the original game being part of the game itself instead of needing to buy it from the DLC shop.

I know its only a trailer and did get real funding but if you know Anime / 80's animated movies, you know Akira. And you know thats its live action version been in Development Hell for years. but when a team of Canadians set out to remake this year, well they did a good job so say the least. I've always thought that fans of a series are the only ones who should be making remakes. Give them a budget and complete creative freedom and watch the fireworks.

Three names: Cecil Blount DeMille. Three words: The Ten Commandments. The 1956 (partial) remake was incredible and way better than the 1923 silent version. Chuck Heston and Yul Brynner??? Hell yes!!!!

I love fan remakes. Even the bad ones make me feel joy seeing these fans have such a love for some piece of art or some genre.

Check out Metal Gear Solid Philanthropy. It isn't a remake of such, more adaptation, but brings snake to the big screen with only a little budget and tons of passion. The same thing with escape from city 17 which adapts hl2 to from game to video. Both are amazing.

While people say remakes are horrible and a new fad in Hollywood to just make a quick dollar. Remakes have been around for around as long as film has been a thing. It's just we see more of them now because more movies are being made. Now while you can argue that they may not be good or lesser quality of the original, that's a whole other debate. Half-Life: Source was just a basic port, but Black Mesa is an (almost) fully fledged remake.

One thing, im not sure it completely relates to this: spoofs. Not fan made ones, hollywood spoofs like Spaceballs which parodied Star Wars... Theyre kind of the only good Hollywood "remakes".

When it comes to fan remakes in general about movies and such I dont really like them, but also respect the amount of time and effort the creators put into them. The one kind of fan remakes I do like, however, are the Brony community's fan remakes. If you go looking for them there are hundreds of them, all over the internet, and the most rediculous part is that they are sometimes better quality than the origional show itself. If anything, they are a better quality genre of fan remakes than the many movie fan remakes. What baffles me is that you didnt touch on this aspect of fan remakes at all and only talked about movie fan remakes. I'm slightly disappointed that you didnt look into this aspect of fan remakes or even consider acknowlegeing them :( I must admit that I am biased towards them because I myself am a brony, but I would love to hear your opinion on the matter!

Is it a remake if you make it a nearly different movie? Like for example The Shining remake. It was practically a different movie but based in the same location as previous family from the original movie but at a different time period.

Dude, I love lots of remakes, (not looking at you, Crystal Skull!) especially the Batman ones. And, to be honest, really don't enjoy fan made ones. Guess there will always be a different of opinions. Anyways, interesting episode, even though I disagree.

Also another reason why fan remakes > Hollywood remakes is that fan films are not Canon and don't establish anything new/destroy it. So no worries there.

I do not think remakes are ALWAYS bad. They can also help improve on the quality of past movies and even spark a new generation of fans. However, you need to be carefull about WHAT you want to remake. Don't remake Star Wars: A New Hope, because even though that movie is already ancient, It's story, genius and feel still hold up to movies today well enough to be watchable. But if somebody would, for example, remake the wizard of oz, it would be a great way to show children this beautiful tale in a new, modern and updated way.

Remakes are for everybody, but I don't think fan remakes are the only *true* remakes. Hollywood has a *long* history with them, with films like Maltese Falcon (considered one of the best Noir films Hollywood has produced), and John Carpenter's the Thing (written off as an overtly gross remake, that people realized was actually a phenomenal film and is now considered one of the best horror films of all time). In all honesty, it's a matter of perspective and motivation. Perspective, in that it's the ingenuity and availability of resources to make something, and motivation being that spark that captures their attention and drives them to make it. But if we could get a proper remake of Dune, that'd be great...

What about pokemon? Fan remakes of the earlier games (Hacked versions and all that jazz) struggle to get nearly as popular as the company's remakes (FireRed, SoulSilver etc.)

I would say that of course fan remake's aren't the only good ones. Even remakes that are just made to grab money can actually be good. But of course the most important seems to be love and dedication to the craft. A good example of a commercial remake which at the same time had that love and dedication would be John Carpenter's The Thing.

I don't think ALL Hollywood remakes are bad. The newer Freaky Friday and the Parent Trap are two I can think of off my head. I enjoyed them much better than the originals. (EDIT: Totally just came into my head: 1986 The Fly better than 1956 The Fly.) I also wonder if you're considering reboots (The Dark Knight, The Amazing Spider Man, Wolverine, Superman, etc.) or novels that have made multiple movies made of them (Lord of the Rings, I Am Legend, Dracula, Frankenstein, Shakespeare’s works, Oscar Wilde’s work, etc.) or just movies that began as movies? Or are those just a whole other can of worms? What about spoof movies like Young Frankenstein or those Family Guy Star War specials? Both commentaries showed that Mel Brooks and Seth MacFarlane really loved the source materials enough to make the spoofs in the first place. Would those count as fan or Hollywood remakes or both if they are counted at all?

Do video game remakes count? Because Mario 64 has a fantastic enhanced remake by Nintendo themselves, plus there was that one straightforward fan remake which people loved that got canned thanks to Nintendo.

Most fan remakes are only good because their hilariously terrible.It's a prime example of so bad that its good,but don't get me wrong some fans can make Hollywood type of short films about certain popular games and films like the Mortal Kombat Legacy series ru-vid.commortalkombatlegacy . Kevin Tancharoen created the short film Mortal Kombat Rebirth to hopefully pitch the idea to Warner Bros to create a potential full length remake film of the original Mortal Kombat movie(which is another example of a movie that was so bad but good).With only a budget of $7,500 he was able to sell the idea to Warner Bros and got a RU-vid series with a potential future full length movie release.Granted the man is established in Hollywood,but to take such a small budget and knowing that Video Game related movies never do good is still pretty impressive. Here is the downfall though,Tancharoen decided to back out as director for the new Mortal Kombat movie that was part of the web series deal.Maybe he decided to back out because of creative differences?who knows.

I want to say that some remakes are great, but I can't think of a single one. I almost said The Time Machine because that is a great story, and I think modern film making could give it a nice update, but the remake was all visuals and no heart. The remakes that are annoying me right now are the Moses story remakes. Cecil B. DeMille did that story so well. Who are all these film makers who think they can do it better? If you want to tell the story about an ancient Hebrew in ancient Egypt, how about telling the sooty of Joseph? Thats a great story! And Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat has not done it justice.

I would go ahead and say that the one remake I love (perhaps more so in that I generally hate westerns) is True Grit: I found everythign in the remake of that to be superior to the original (again, that said, I watched the original and wasn't all too impressed).

I feel that fan remakes are more pointles than reboots or big buget pg-13 remakes. I don't understand why anybody would re-make a culture hit,with a bugget of $12 and a ham sandwich.Yeah,i've heard that people love a film so much,that they want to make it, but i say that that is the dumbest thing you can ever do with your time and money. Original films are made for no other reason to make money off a proven concept. Aliens was made because sci-fi was in fashion. Star Wars was almost NOT made because sci-fi wasn't. I don't think that matters at all as long as talented people are involved. Hitchcock remade films, heck, even Shakespeare reused common stories. There are a bunch of great remakes because at their core they're great films.
