I've heard of a group of people that play Desert Bus in a charity livestream called "Desert Bus for Chariy". They really sit down and just play Desert Bus for hours and they have scored many points by now.

My grandparents have a dvd of the log fire and we play it every Christmas. They actually have multiple copies, they have one for the main tv, the back tv, and the computer. Once I asked if I could go on RU-vid and they said, "When the fire dies out." And that thing doesnt die out!!!

I found this channel thanks to alltime10s. Every video seems so interesting to me. Especially this one. The 7-hour train ride broadcast made my eyeballs go, like 'boom!', the 134-hour boat thing made my jaw drop and the 72-minute teaser for the 720 hour film made laugh and cuss so hard at the same time. Imma watch your vids from now on.

Rob Dyke brought me here, but you're why I stay. You have an amazingly broad outlook on music and interrelationships with media and culture, which I sit in solid awe of you for. As to the whole "Slow [X]" group of movements, I think by and large they're good things. I don't get the point of week-long movies, but I have watched train rides, and of a holiday I've put on a Yule log program, just because of nostalgia. My favorite though is the slow food movement. We have become so accustomed to getting meals, even in full sit-down restaurants, in ten minutes, or dashing from place to place eating on the go. Slow food demands attention to detail, and patience, and obviously time to digest--both what you put into the food, by prepping and cooking it, but also by the time it takes to eat it, and speak with the friends and families we're with. It's kind of like a pause button on the urban madness.

I find that slow programs like the ones you talked about are great in showing how certain scenery looks for those who haven't seen them before, like snowy areas for people who never see snow due to their location and vice versa with desert areas.

I think that the experience that slow tv provides is the real selling point. I don't think I'll ever get to go on a boat in a fjord but this allows me to get a taste of that. Actually watching the whole thing is not really expected (I assume) but getting a slice of life fix from it is. What makes these really marketable is that they are giving you a glimpse into an experience that is so mundane that you may never experience it. It's almost like shadowing someone in their job and finding tax accounting interesting. You don't do it daily, you don't see it daily, so their everyday life becomes unique and different. This was a great video!

I am Norwegian and Hurtigruten Minutt for Minutt (the boat ride) was a gag for all of us. It has been launched several times, which is weird, because no one but retired people seem to have the patience to watch more than 5 minutes. I tried watching 5 minutes, but i never got even that far, nor did any of my friends. It's true that 60% of the population tuned in at some point, it's important to remember that most TV's here in Norway start up at NRK when turned on. This is because if you own a TV in Norway, you are obliged to pay for NRK's funding by law, and therefor all TV's have the channel both on antenna and cable with no regard to signal. Or so it's supposed to be, anyway. What I'm going at is that it was so successful for two reasons: 1)everyone sort of HAD to tune in either they liked it or not, so the statistics may lie, and 2) the more people talking about how weird a thing it is to broadcast, the more people will watch the thing that's being talked about.

RE: Comments at end of Video, Sam, I can't believe I didn't think of it last week, but there is a band, that in my opinion stands one band that is the direct opposite of Jihadist Rap, Orphaned Land, a Progressive/Folk Metal band from Israel. Their music is centered around a message of peace between the three major religions in the Middle east. Some years ago, they even put up their albums for free download in countries where distribution of their music had been banned, to try and spread their message of peace. If you don't know of them I highly suggest you check them out.

Slow music exists too! John Cage's organ piece "As Slow as Possible" comes to mind. It's estimated to have a duration of 640 years with individual notes and chords played over years. For example, the first chord played (an A above middle C, C above middle C, and the F sharp above that) on January the 5th, 2006 and stopped on July the 5th, 2008. The last note changed occurred on October 5, 2013. The next change will not occur until 2020. Source: Wikipedia

You know I didn't know about the slow movement really until seeing this video. However when you spoke about the yule log fire on television... I actually remembered that it was still being done in the mid 90s. When I was younger around Christmas time, my mom would turn the channel on and they would play soothing Christmas music. She told me that it was on the air since the 60s. Now that I see that it wasn't just some quirky channel (I actually cannot remember when it stopped being done) it makes me wonder if they are still doing it. As for the video, I think the slow movement is a great way to teach people to slow down and reflect. Everyone is used to the fast pace of today's world and many of us are guilty of forgetting to take a moment to breathe. Even our "downtime" is in fact not really even that. We're still doing something: being on the internet, watching television, etc. When was the last time any of us just stepped outside to watch the stars. Not just a once in a while thing but actually something we do on a regular basis? I know I'm guilty of it.

You make it sound like video of the view from the front of a train is a new thing. This is what railfans like myself call a "cab ride video" and there is no shortage of other examples. The Norwegian TV show might have been the first time that a complete and unedited cab ride was shown on national TV, but there are a ton of examples of other cab ride videos. A wide array of worldwide production companies have released videos like this for sale on tape and more recently on DVD and many more are posted on youTube daily. One of my current favorite channels posts cab ride videos of railway journeys in Japan. I'm also a model railroader so I watch cab rides not only to see the scenery pass by but also to get an idea of the lineside structures (like all of the signs and signal lights, how the track is configured through junctions, the overhead wire structures, etc), and because many of the videos are made on passenger trains, to also listen to the on-board announcements. I will also sometimes have the video playing on one monitor while I follow the track on Google Maps on another monitor. I guess this makes me more of an active slow TV viewer.

He explicitly made examples of other such shows and that it´s nothing new. The only difference with that was that it had many views, was aired at actual prime time and was subject to international media because of it, while mostly this type of broadcast happens in the night time as a filler to the stations program etc. and not for mainstream views, why it was surprising that the actual mainstream watched it during prime when aired.

I really am glad that MattPatt linked to this channel. Besides the interesting discussions, I tend to have very eclectic tastes in music, but have trouble finding new things to try listening to. I get a LOT of great recommendations out of this show. Plus it's pointed out some great horror out to me, and as a result I got to see Cigarette Burns, which was the best bit of horror I have seen in a long time, especially from a series that tends to feel like Are You Afraid of the Dark. I'm not sure if anyone else will have this perspective on slow tv, come to think of it many people likely will, but it seems like it would be great for people who can't physically leave the house that often. I have chronic pain issues, and I've met a lot of other people through Twitch and RU-vid who are disabled as well, and we've developed a lot of great ways to stay connected and still experience life through media, even if we can't physically do it. I felt something stir in me when I started to watch this episode, and realized it was because I had found another way to escape the bed I'm mostly trapped in. I may not be strong enough to go for an extended trip of any kind, but there are still ways I can experience it.
@thisexists

@wayfareangel
@wayfareangel 9 лет назад
Yeah, Cigarette Burns really made a home for itself inside me. Thing is, I couldn't say what's special about it. Parts of it are cheesy, or cliche, but the entirety forms something very powerful. I guess these sorts of things are things you think about when healthy. Sadly you think of it too much when you're sick. But honestly, disabled people have it so much better today than before the internet. Before, if you couldn't move much, you sat on the front steps and watched the world go by. Now? You got a pain spike late at night, someone on Twitch is streaming, and I've never encountered a chat that wasn't willing to help distract me. Cabin fever? Secondlife can help reign that in a bit. Dress up real pretty, go talk to people, do all the things you can't any more. Heck, now we can go on boat and train rides ^_^ I tell you, Canada may sure love to keep it's disabled people below the poverty line, but world and internet media has our back ^_^ Heh, sorry, I got a little excited as I reminded myself about all the cool options I have.

I think "slow TV" might have started as somebody's ingenious response to the ultra-fast speed of life that we experience. And as someone who is forced to live in that speed, I find it really nice to be able to slow down and just relax by taking a virtual trip. I think a lot of people find it difficult to take time out from work to actually take a vacation (probably because they are afraid of not being able to catch up after they come back). But slow TV offers an attractive alternative that helps the mind to wind down.

*1)* A bit ironic is that the boat ride is by a boat line called "Hurtigruten" which translates to "fast route". We can only imagine the "slow route". *2)* Slow TV was a hit all through the 90s. But it was called "screen savers". The old folks still tell tales around the fireplace about those times. They'd eat popcorn and watch in anticipation to see where circles would bounce next on the screen. They called it "nihilist pong tournaments" because nobody was keeping scores, it never ended and you'd peer into the abyss of existential pointlessness. Then there was of course the fish tank show. Oh, such drama! Would Vince finally hook up with Wanda or would Bruce the clownfish, the younger more handsome tank cleaning boy seduce her? You'd have to watch for three weeks to find out. *3)* I'd suggest wearing tight fit t-shirts (myself, I sometimes buy ladies fit band t-shirts). We're dashing manly men with hair on our chests and beer tankards in our fists and need not apologize for it.

I'd watch that train program. I'm a sucker for pretty landscapes and I've always found the rhythmic sounds of a moving train very relaxing. It really makes perfect sense to me to sometimes just want to slow down, it seems like this kind of thing is targeted at people who live in urban areas who don't have a quiet backyard to just go sit in. Sometimes humans just need "nothing". Also, for other people who think the train thing is a good idea, there's a site out there called rainymood and it's literally just a soundtrack of rain with footage of rain falling on a screen. It's great.

Great video. I'd never really had much experience with Slow TV before, and I think the closest i've come to Slow Gaming are games like Hohokum, where you have input, but little in the way of actual objective. Thinking about the Slow Media movement (although it's not something i've really experienced before), I think you can argue it's moved far beyond visual phenomena already. There are whole websites devoted simply to playing the sound of rainfall or the ocean etc. It's definitely something moving into the aural field at the very least, although I'm not sure what the difference would be between Slow Sound and ambient noise, or if there even is one.

Here in Belgium, we have "seasonal views" (name changes with every passing season) It's basically panning shots of European ski slopes, city skylines, etc. that changes every 30 seconds to another location with radio in the background. And I have it on every morning.

I came here through Game Theory, and I just want you to know that I really enjoy your videos. My first experience with your channel was actually your video on Black MIDI that a friend linked me, and Game Theory's mention at the end of their latest episode just made me go "Oh hey, isn't he the guy who did that video? I should subscribe to him." Thanks for responding to comments in the videos, too; that's not something a lot of people do and it's really cool to see. (PS. I don't think you're a shitheel. A poopfoot, maybe, but not a shitheel.)

Hi, can´t believe you left out Bob Ross. His way of explaining painting was so soothing, i rarely saw the end of an episode. It was aired late and i always fell asleep to it.

Damn, I watched the Train one, and it is amazingly calming. It really made my day. Thank you Budy :3

THere is/was a TV show in Poland, called "Nocny Patrol" (The Night Patrol) and it's just a hour of a guy driving around on the streets of a random city. The "Night Walk" had reminded me about this.

I have quite a few train "cab rides"... they're great for background video or zoning out to.

I was recently in Toronto and walked up Yonge street from like 2 to 3 am and there was no smooth jazz and people kept screaming "woo" after leaving Zanzibar over and over

I would love the train trip show. I love bike/car ride videos. They're oddly soothing.

I would watch it for a little bit the train stuff. such a change of scenery from this place that just to wonder and admire; seems like a nice window.

I remember years ago when I first saw Night Walk, my initial reaction was "this is a thing?" I grew to love that show. It's nice to see it referenced here.

The key point with Slow TV and Cinema is perspective. Always has been. It's in the same realm as first person games, an experience one doesn't usually get in their day to day lives. Now, admittedly, the entire thing is not seen at one time (usually left on in the background so that people can turn to it when they want), but at least part of it is experienced (albeit not in person). Hopefully, people will be inspired to take that step towards adventures like that.

I'm from Vienna. We have something really similar playing at night. It's a cam but into a "Straßenbahn" a kind of above ground metro and the entire program consists of the Straßenbahn going from one destination to the next.

I came across something similar to this when I was gathering footage of night driving for a vaporwave video that I did. I spent HOURS on RU-vid watching clips of people just driving at night in the city. It's just so damn relaxing.
