Audience Questions - Ask Kati Anything! podcast episode #21
1. I wonder if therapists ever get ''desensitized'' to sad stories and get less empathetic after listening to so many of them from clients? Also, does listening to so many sad stories affect your worldview and beliefs about human-being? (all the way from Hong Kong!)

But once in a while I feel shitty and frustrated after a session because I feel like it could have gone better than it did - maybe I could've been more focused or in a better mood, I could've shared a bit more, or used this important time more wisely ect. Do you have any advice?
4. How can we learn to trust ourselves when our mental condition leaves our ability to get things done unpredictable and we have often said that we would do things that turned out to be impossible for us? I feel like I can't trust myself because of how unreliable I am.
5. Is it normal to not feel any connection with my parents after realizing that I...
6. Any suggestions on tackling a therapy session when I’m not even sure what I’m feeling or what is bothering me? I’ve been in therapy for about 8 months. I started after getting laid off, and I had a clear idea of what was causing my...

9. I noticed this weird pattern about myself which - to me - doesn't make sense. Since I was in 1st grade I always found myself looking for trustworthy adults outside of my family, mostly females. Also, does listening to so many sad stories affect your worldview and beliefs about human-being? (all the way from Hong Kong!) 7:24 I've heard you talk about how important it is to set a treatment plan in therapy. Can you give some examples of a treatment plan you set with clients, how you went about it, and how long it took? 17:51 Usually after a therapy session I feel great and much better than when I came in. But once in a while I feel shitty and frustrated after a session because I feel like it could have gone better than it did - maybe I could've been more focused or in a better mood, I could've shared a bit more, or used this important time more wisely ect. Do you have any advice? 24:18 How can we learn to trust ourselves when our mental condition leaves our ability to get things done unpredictable and we have often said that we would do things that turned out to be impossible for us? I feel like I can't trust myself because of how unreliable I am. 30:29 Is it normal to not feel any connection with my parents after realizing that I suffered from emotional neglect? 39:50 Any suggestions on tackling a therapy session when I’m not even sure what I’m feeling or what is bothering me? 45:53 Is it common to feel like becoming aware of, understanding and expressing your emotions made things even harder and to miss the times you were able to just repress your emotions and get on with life? I feel like I just never get a break and it's soo exhausting. 50:50 How do we improve teletherapy when working on trauma and dissociation? What are some things the therapist can do to ground clients during telehealth sessions and what are some things we as clients can do to stay present? I struggle with dissociation even in the office and telehealth has been a challenge because of this. 56:54 I noticed this weird pattern about myself which - to me - doesn't make sense. Since I was in 1st grade I always found myself looking for trustworthy adults outside of my family, mostly females. So I ended up feeling closer to certain teachers than to my parents. Now that I'm an adult I see that I'm still doing the same thing, only that it's not just teachers anymore. I wonder why this happens. 1:01:42 Is it normal not to tell your therapist everything right away? I know the more you tell your therapist the better they can help you but once you open up will they be upset that you hid something important from them for so long? 1:05:00 Are nightmares after therapy normal? When I talk with my therapist about things that remind me of situations from my childhood (it happened to be abusive) for the next few days I have nightmares about these memories. Is there something I can do about it?

So helpful. Thank you Kati 💕 I dissociate during my therapy sessions too. I have been trying out your video therapy suggestions and they have been helping a lot. I asked my therapist to give me 5 minutes at the end to play a grounding game. We like to play the game “favorites.” It helps me think about the things I love. The game is played like this: Therapist: “what’s your favorite ice cream flavors?” Client: chocolate. “What is your favorite book?” And then the therapist responds. Also, I love weighted things and bring a weighted lap pad to therapy. They are smaller so they are more affordable. I hope this helps if anyone else is struggling with dissociation!

Speaking from experience to the person who feels like they’re supposed to feel better after getting a job: there’s also ‘decompression’ needed. Kati talks about a marble in a furrow, sometimes. Or it’s like the land under a glaciar is ‘squished’ and takes time to rebound even after the weight is gone. I worked in a stressful place (many years ago) and taking vacations didn’t automatically make me feel better- feelings lingered. But I also had underlying undiagnosed stuff that skewed my perception. Give yourself some time and space to process... and you got the job! Keep patting yourself on the back. I hope you feel less-awful even when ‘great’ is elusive

@@Katimorton 😍👌 thanks! And thanks for all the wonderful videos of course! I've been watching them for like seven years and I'm a huge fan. I respond well to opera since I'm a classical singer...singing student... but I like musical a lot too, so if I'd ever ask a question (but you always answer ahead to questions I didn't know I had) I'd appeciate an opera answer if possible 😂😉 Thank you very much for everything! ❤️ Greetings from Salzburg, Austria

This is so helpful! The attachment questions are really hitting home for me. I am definitely looking up your RU-vid on attachment and emotional neglect/abuse. Thank you so much! As a teen I was abused by proxy with therapists. My mom is very disordered, so she drug me from one councilor to another until she found one to blame me for her life. I'm now 45 and after a 15 yr marriage to an abusive man I'm now digging into my childhood so I can figure out why I don't trust my gut and pick these assholes. Thank you!!

Hi, I just wanted to drop a random grammar lesson on the word whom. Who and whom work like I and me respectively. For example: John and I were talking about them. They were talking about John and me. Who was talking about them? Whom they were talking about? (They were talking about whom?) Who to who? × Who to whom? ✓ Just like it's not they to they, but they to them. P.D.: I made this comment as Kati wanted to know how to use "whom".

Great vid! Thanks for sharing. Great to hear your insight on treatment plans and goals, in addition to the main subject of the vid. You share tons of important points and are clearly helping a ton of people. 'We need emotional support just like we need food and a roof over our head.' Couldn't agree more. Recently made a channel to start talking about similar topics, and it's awesome to see what people like you have been saying and sharing here. Thanks again.

8:04 I think it depends on the type of therapy. In analytic therapy it wasn't so much goal orientated but still helpful in a different way. In behavioral and trauma therapy it's more towards specific goals and action.

You took the words out of my head - thinking putty is great! My therapist has two big tins of the white/clear ‘liquid glass’ putty (there’s also a pink/clear) and it’s good for me because I also have ADHD so can fidget but also she plays with it too so I feel better connected to her when I struggle to make eye contact and/or speak.

About Q 11, nightmares and therapy. I'm being diagnosed these days, which is already a kind of therapy. The corona crisis has given me a much needed break, and I'm taking the opportunity to get some help. I've got so many thoughts piling up and in the end it feels somewhat like many voices talking at the same time. This can happen in the evening and night before and after an appointment. It's exhausting, and easily gives me a headache and a night without much sleep. Even brings back migraine to some degree, which I thought I was rid of 20 years ago. I've only had similar experiences earlier when dealing with extremely complex technical challenges at work. Btw, I wanted to find out if I really was an Aspie, but now I have a strong feeling the conclusion will be that it's PTSD, and only that. I'm having a hard time realizing this, though I guess it has been so obvious to the psychiatric team. I was thinking I'd be quickly in and out for that Aspie diagnosis, but instead I'm looking at therapy for I don't know how long. It's not that I didn't know I had PTSD, but I didn't know how big a deal it was. I read today that people with PTSD frequently are not even aware they're having a serious problem. Well, that's me. Your videos are great.

38:38 I totally agree with you. We don't owe our parents anything! And the same for adoptees! You don't owe them anything. And you definitely don't have to be "grateful". It wasn't your choice to lose your mother and extended family (and culture in case of international adoptees), it was their decision to take you in and their responsibility. We don't owe them anything!

Hi Kati, I have a question that hopefully you can answer in a future video or podcast. I think I am afraid to see a therapist, when I was in high school I had a hard time talking to therapists and felt like my mom was listening in from the hallway or asking lots of questions about what we talked about, now that I’m an adult I keep coming up with excuses to not go. I have found online groups of people who also distrust mental health professionals and I think it can be very difficult for a lot of people who’ve had previous bad experiences. What should someone do if they don’t like the idea of traditional therapy?

I guess that helps me understand why therapy didn't work so well for me. My therapist, and also another one, wanted me to have a plan. And they worked on the plan instead of trying to understand which things I can change and which things I can't change first. I hope I can later have therapy with a therapist who tries to understand what I can actually change and do before making a plan.

Light bulb moment... The wisteria story made so much sense. I look at my mental health issues as a bulleted list, check, check, check. Hi Kati, I am 32 and have always thought I was just weird and shy. As I am getting older, I am thinking it may be autism. I am constantly having communication issues with everyone at home/work/etc. I don't have all the classical signs of autism and it seems like no one really understands female autism in adults. Could it still be autism? Is nuerodivergent the same as autism, and if not, could it be that? I'm just struggling with a lot of new things and it seems like even my senses are going out of wack. I did ask my last therapist about it, but was dismissed and am too nervous to try again. I'm not sure what to do. Thanks!

I kind of feared that I used the wrong wording in the fourth question but I just didn't know what to use. I didn't mean just mood disorders, I wanted to leave the question open so that people with mood disorders could relate also though. For me, because of my autism and sensory processing disorder people talking unexpectantly to me or like e.g. there being building work can overwhelm me for hours, or I get criticism and my rejection sensitive dysphoria kicks in. Like, small things put me off a lot. Also, like, I get so excited about new projects and tell people about them and then there are barriers I didn't expect and I never get to finish. I kind of... idk, I tried include others but feel a bit left out now. The tips were good though, so thank you. I guess I'll have to reframe it a bit later to make it work for me.

That fifth question... about the parents.... FUCK! I NEEDED THAT. Recently I decided to cut off my male progenitor and one of my siblings (which now I decided to cut off too cuz they're only from his side and I live with my mother) made me feel so bad because they excuse and tolerate his neglectful and sometimes agressive behaviour (cuz he has money, and let me tell you I wouldn't mind to have his, but he is too emotionally taxing). I just felt SOOOOOO VALIDATED from that, since my mother "is sad" that I "no longer" will have a good (or any tbh) relationship with him (as if I ever had one in the first place).

in regards to question number 8 - what do you do if there is no warning when it comes to dissociation? for me, it's like a switch goes off in my brain and then I am 'back" in my body and it's an hour later like what happened to me today. mom said I was acting Normal and had no idea till I came "back".

I'm so invisible. Nobody sees me. And even if they would, they wouldn't care. Why should anyone ever, considering I'm me.

I sometimes feel unimportant, insignificant, invisible too. You are not alone. I see you too. Feel your pain. Hang in there. People really do care, it's our own perception. 💌 sending you hugs.

33:09 My mother told me a few days after the breakup of my first three year relationship that by now I should get over it. Thanks for nothing!

Omg I need Kati to have one (1) session with me where I just quick catch her up with my abusive parents and let her yell at me for the next 40 minutes about not needing them or owing them shit 😂 because for some reason I keep going back to them regardless of the lack of acknowledgement or commitment to change. Or even just like a recording I can play on repeat of a compilation of her popping off about shitty parents to hype me up so I don't internalize that guilt. 😂

I think it would be interesting if you did some interviews with therapists who dont use treatment plans and got their viewpoint

Totally!! Most of my colleagues use them, but if I come across one I will definitely see if they would be open to a filmed interview :) xoxo

It's strange. I have been to 7 different therapists and non of them made a treatment plan with me 🙈😅

But I found one that I really connect with good. He is a bit lazy but still the best match I could have had. :) And I really have to thank you kati for the video where you said one of the most important things is to be 100% honest in therapy... that helped a lot :)

31:53 right 32:22 wrong. it's not "taking away", it's "not giving". "and we need...and they didn't give that" - so, neglect? right? of course i'm right. -i know im wrong, as always- oh, dictionary says neglect is "to not give enough care". so, to not give at all is abuse then. okay. but as we usually think abuse is [what was mentioned before], why to fuse those words. why not to call it neglect type 2 or extreme neglect or something. life would be easier if such things would be intuitively understandable. ugh, people!
