Are Older Goldwings Better?
Are the older Goldwings better? Or is it worth it to buy the newer version and have the added technology and the six speed transmission? The age old debate lives on and the Wing riders on both sides are very passionate!

I used to have a 5th gen and I know what you mean about being only a five speed. You are absolutely correct when you get down to what’s really different in the two versions and what really matters. I won’t do it now because I’m in retirement but if I could go back in time I’d hung onto the 2009 wing and added other bikes.

The older wings look to be more of a touring motorcycle. The new ones are like you said, more of a sport touring. I like both. I think you should get a second one😂

There is a after market finial drive that make the gears taller, it drops the RPM’s around 400 to 500 RPM’s it called Henry’s Finial drive check it out, im thinking of putting one on my 2014 Valkyrie.

I miss my first Goldwing a 2014 Valkyrie that had a five speed manual transmission. Really wish I would have had more patience and sorted out the luggage thing and windshield issues. Unfortunately limited aftermarket support plagued that motorcycle.

That 14 Valkyrie was a great bike. I miss mine but as you stated the lack of aftermarket parts and luggage made it tough to keep. I also wish it would have had a 6 speed transmission! Thanks for the comment and for watching G!

The GL1800 gen 5 is a far better 2 up touring compared to my 2018. I had both. My wife does not like the 2018 compared to our 2007 for her passenger comfort. Having owned and ridden Both across country they both have the same range I was on my 18 and my friend was on his 08 at each fill up he used 1 gallon more then my 2018. About 220- 240 per tank. Pulling my bushtec trailer I’d rather have the older wing. It got about the same mileage on the freeway with or without the trailer. The 2018 range with the trailer is drastically different decrease of about 50 miles. I would almost go back to the previous Gen if my wife and I did more weekend trips. The 2018 for a weekend for 2 up storage blows compared to the older bike. At least Honda in 2021 enlarged the trunk.

I imagine it was kind of emotional seeing the two kids going off to day one of their respective school milestones. I HATE when that TPMS low indicator comes on (Tire Pre-Menstrual Syndrome). Means I gotta get down on my knees and, well, you know. Problem with buying an older Go-Wing is, at least at my local dealership, they won't work on bikes that are over 10 years old, which burns my ass. (You know what else burns my ass? A flame about three feet high.) With my Valk, next year is apparently going to be the last year they'll do anything for it other than oil changes and tires. My feeling is, if you're a dealer of any kind, you should always, ALWAYS service what you sell!! The other thing is, you're giving up a lot of new technology and performance in terms of software, features, and other things. And it's going to be more likely to need high dollar service the older it is. If I'm going to buy a used Go-Wing, I want one not more than one or two years old with low miles, just to eliminate the immediate depreciation of a brand new bike. Rick and I and everyone on the Valk forum laments the absence of a 6th gear on these engines. The fuel savings would be huge. But the thing still cruises at 2500 RPM's at 60 mph, so it's quite comfortable. After extensive research on new tires for my Valk, I settled on a pair of Metzeler ME 888's, and to do that, I had to go with a slightly taller rear than spec. According to a comparison done on a web site, this effectively reduces the revolutions per mile by 23. So in effect, I have almost given myself a 6th gear and improved fuel mileage. And yes, you need all the saddlebag and storage area on a bike you can get. It's all I can do to pack everything for a 5-day trip in and on my Valk. One thing I REALLY wish I had on it are places on the bars or tank to store little stuff like registration, charging cables, GoPro batteries, etc. Just got back home from our 5-day trip to Cherokee NC. Rode the Blue Ridge all the way down from Roanoke, VA and back. Stopped in Wheels Through Time, met Britman from the forum there, and rode the Dragon. Saw incredible scenery, awesome wildlife, and thousands of motorcycles. It took a lot out of me and I am slowly recuperating and catching up. Legs were cramping from sitting in the same position on the bike for 5 days. But I wouldn't trade the memories for anything. I dropped a cutoff glove at one of the overlooks on the BRP on the way down. I thought it was gone forever and I'd have to buy another pair. By a sheer stroke of unbelievable luck, we pulled in to the exact same overlook on the way back North, and there it lay right on the roadway where I dropped it! And still in good condition. I have a ton of pics and videos to sift through, but I think maybe I finally got some decent video. Tongue click and fingers pointed back atcha! 🏍🏍🏍🥃🌦😜👍🕶🍺🍺👌🎧☝🎵

Glad you had fun on your trip Craig! I had no idea the taller tires could have that kind of effect! Very good info! I hate it when dealerships or shops don’t want to work on bikes that are older than 10 years. So dumb. Thanks for watching and for your continued support my friend!

I hear you when you talk about the 6th gear. My Wing and my Valkyrie have 5 gears, and one of the most common topics is how much they need a 6th gear. There is no reason why there shouldn't be a 6th gear, it bugs me, there is plenty of engine to make use of a 6th. On the Valkyrie, I also kind of wish it had reverse, it's a 1000 pound machine, and doing the Fred Flintstone backing it up sucks ass.
@BigSmittyRiding
@BigSmittyRiding 11 месяцев назад
I fell ya. That 6th gear is a life saver. I’m sure as I get older the reverse would come in handy. Right now I don’t have it and I’ve never used it so I don’t really know what I’m missing. Thanks for watching and for the comment!

Owned 4 Gl1500 and gen 2 07 and 09 wings. I absolutely loved all of those bikes. I test rode the gl1800 2023 today and whilst I liked it I would never buy it. It's too small road presents is puterfull. I hated the satsav garbage like all the others. Too small windscreen didn't like the luggage capacity nor the fuel capacity. The bike is ugly. My mum and partner wouldn't get on it.. Snatchy throttle. Only thing I liked was different riding modes and how smooth the bike was.. Didn't like it won't ever buy it. It's not a router it's a sports bike. I liked it I didn't love it. I just bought an electric windscreen for gl1800 09 keeping that bike.

Thank you for the feedback and for your honesty! I greatly appreciate when a Gen 5 rider chimes in and gives folks their opinion on how the Gen 6 stacks up. It’s very helpful and gives folks another option besides buying a brand new bike. Much appreciated!

@@BigSmittyRiding you say I really love gold Wings including the new one I just really don't like the direction Honda are going in. There will be lots of people that like small bikes but I like it big and I don't like it all compact like this one I like to have pockets in the front I like the pockets on the side I just like the bigger bikes. There will be plenty of people that like the new version and I won't treat them any differently at the end of the day it is a Goldwing it's just a very different type of Goldwing. It just isn't suitable for us with over 100,000 miles a year put onto the bike and the last gl1500 with 880000 me on it before it died we ride a lot so we really need the best of the best and the most comfortable that we can have and unfortunately it just wasn't the newer ones and I'm just really sad about that. I do agree the suspension on the new bikes just amazing and I am going to buy an electric windscreen for my 09 Goldwing as well as go with traction Dynamics to get the suspension up to scratch.
@BigSmittyRiding
@BigSmittyRiding 10 месяцев назад
@elixier33 I agree they went a totally different direction on the new Wings. Things like the extra pockets and storage space are what I dislike about my 2021 Wing. The power and handling are top notch but the lack of storage and wind protection are big detractors. Thanks again for watching and for your feedback!
@elixier33
@elixier33 10 месяцев назад
@@BigSmittyRiding maybe they should have done two different types of wings. I was pretty godsmack to find that there were no crash bars so if you accidentally drop the bike which does happen when other people's kids tend to sit on your bike when you're not there then you sort of find it on the floor when you get back there's no real protection on the new wings. I wish that we can have all the new gizmos and all the new stuff in the old bike she'll and you never know maybe someone will sort of hack drop it together one day but until Honda make something that is designed for people that want to talk and not everyone I can't see myself buying it and that makes me sad because I've owned every single Wing the 1200 the 1100 I've had them all but this is the first time I don't want to buy one and I was really sad about that. I know that Honda wanted to appeal to more people and well they probably been more successful but I think they will have lost a lot of their loyal older customer base
@BigSmittyRiding
@BigSmittyRiding 10 месяцев назад
@elixier33 I agree, they kinda alienated their core customer base with the new design. I would have kept a Wing that more closely resembles the older version but added a six speed transmission and then had a sport bike style bike like the newer Wings.
