Thank you! This is how you do a "is it obsolete?" video. As someone who went away from semi auto for my CCW into a Revolver instead, I'm a huge advocate TOWARDS Revolvers for CCW and home defense. Every time I see one of these "obsolete" videos, my dander gets up and I start to get defensive about it, 9 times out of 10 it's some dude preaching their tactical gospel about speed and capacity and completely ignoring the Pros of a revolver every time. I love Semi Autos as well, but I shoot revolvers better. I've been around them my entire life and I trust them more. When people jump straight into the "yep they only hold like 6 rounds they're obsolete" bullshit type videos, it's only giving us a bad name and taking such an amazing Firearm out of the limelight for potential CCW options. Personally I'd love to see a resurgence in hammer fired weapons in general. Less strikers, more DA/SA pistols on the market in general. Well done, once again proving why you're the best brother. 🤘

A good time is the most important thing for that first range day for a new shooter. When I teach new shooters, I always start them on my full size double action .357 revolver with 38s shooting in single action. You can teach sight picture and grip and there is not much else going on, limp wristing is not an issue, no slide for ladies to struggle with (sorry but that is the biggest issue women face on their first trip to the range), and best of all, it lets them feel like they are really shooting and because it's a big heavy gun the recoil is moderate. After they get their first time jitters behind them I move on to the common pistols, but I find that when I give them freedom to shoot whatever they want they all go back to the revolver and enjoy trying to precision shoot in single action.
@jamesw713
@jamesw713 Месяц назад
For a pocket gun, it's hard to beat a S&W 642. I don't carry it in a Kydex holster, but I don't holster any handgun when the holster is in my pocket. I take out the holster, put the gun in it, then put the holstered gun in my pocket. Doesn't matter if it is my 642 or my Kahr CM9. And, going up in power, I'll take a 44 Mag walking through the woods over most autos. And, I don't care if it is double or single action. And, if hunting, it will more likely be my single-action Super Blackhawk. My Glock 20 with a 6" barrel is a good option, too. But, neither option makes the other obsolete.

Revolvers are excellent defensive guns with a dedicated and enduring audience. For instance, the .38 SPL offers a wide range of ammunition suited to various needs. One of the most interesting is a short ammunition, from Magtech, which allows elderly people or those recoil sensitive to shoot without the recoil of standard rounds. The Magtech .38 SPL SHORT allows users to utilize the same .38 SPL gun, same holster, and speed loader while delivering energy comparable to that of a .32 ACP, which contains enough power to be used in personal defense .

Yep. The question of whether revolvers are obsolete or not isn’t “can they be effective in (insert role)?”, but “are they on par with the alternatives?” Revolvers can still get the job done, but a semi-auto can typically do it better. I used to give revolvers a bit of an edge in concealed carry, IF you were wanting to go for the smallest and best concealed firearm and were willing to accept the tradeoffs, but the growth in more subcompact semi-autos (with increasing capacity) over the last few years has really passed revolvers by. I think an argument could still be made for revolvers in higher power cartridges (44 mag, 500 mag, etc) for protection while hiking or camping, where larger animals could be a concern, but… that’s an AWFULLY niche situation. I love revolvers, and they’re cool and fun as hell, but… these days there’s very little that they bring to the table aside from a very sexy aesthetic. But you know what? There’s nothing wrong with that.

I hate to be the 'if you can't get it done in 6' guy, but the fact is most self defense situations involve 3 rounds or less. I get to the border, declare it and ask for form 222b I think, and holy moly, I had the darn canadian army pointing rifles at me. took my 686, tore my truck apart in a pole barn out back (i had to ask them to leave the tools so I could put it back together). anyway I had to go back to minot and sell it. go back through the border and they were going to tear my truck apart again, the sargent or whatever came out - we talked - and waved me through. anyway I want to get another, one of my favorite as well. it was a 7 shot prelock to - doh! it was quite a while ago, i didn't know at the time I could have shipped it to a ffl or family member or did something. oh well. that's one of the things about firearms. @@HWG-wm8ld Auto loaders jam far more frequent then revolvers. Try firing your glock from your pocket and it will jam every time, meanwhile a revolver will always run. Revolvers are also faster to fire the next round if their is a failure to fire, meanwhile a autoloader will require you to take your eyes off target and do the weapons check dance. I've owned wheel guns for 30 years and the cylinder has never "jammed", meanwhile autoloaders can't say the same. Get educated kiddie.

I think theres ways to innovate and make new designs for a defensive revolver, but the only "recent" innovation outside of the chiappa rhino has just been reducing prices and making minor improvements like re contouring a grip or reinforcing this part of the frame. 327 could also be a benifical caliber to use, but without more industry support its useless for the vast majority of shooters. Revolvers also just tend to get really expensive, so it might be hard to sell a new design thats under 1000$ to begin with. I think its possible that we could see some innovation in the future though.

As a revolver fan who regularly shoots one in competition, thank you. Everything you said it true, but I wanted to add in there is a satisfaction that's hard to match with a bottom feeder. With a good DA wheel gun, you're involved in every part of controlling the gun and it feels like a more civilized tool, from a lost era. Especially when compared to the experience from a single action high capacity blaster some storm trooper would use. I do think they are significantly more expensive in comparison, especially if you start "tuning" and then you have to start reloading. When you add in the competition aspect, moon clips so you don't have to load/unload between stages ($5-8 each) and the rig is comparable to price with normal mag pouches, but you'll need 5+ for a stage. Speaking of moon clips. If a moon clip is stepped on at a match and gets bent at all? It's pretty much dead and you may as well add it to the "dry fire" moon clips. On that note - dry fire. So much more fun with a DA gun, and that's where we wheel gunners make up time. If I nail a reload perfectly, it's about 3 seconds, and that's with hundreds of hours practicing. Tim H can reload a Single Stack in sub 2 seconds, while moving. Red dot solution? I have both the Allchin plate for my red dot on a 617, and there is a really nice LPA sight for about $150 (when they are available) that has a pic rail, I have one on my 929 for Steel Challenge/ICORE open division. The Allchin is as low as you can get a red dot on a revolver (that I've seen). I've used the Vortex and HS407k on it and they work. The beauty of the LPA sight is you can easily pop off the red dot to shoot limited/non optic option. PS- in the future I'd appreciate if you could add in a "cost per hole" when you are reviewing revolvers. I have introduced this as a way to justify different revolvers and talk myself out of some. Example? Recently got a used S&W 627 8 shot 357mag. Even after FFL and shipping the whole thing cost me less than $120PH. Got a S&W 686 6 shot snubby, and even after sending to TK to have cut for clips and 9mm (plus moon clips) I'm in it for $150PH. What I cannot justify is a Colt at $500 PER HOLE. That's madness. Wow. I wrote up a lot.

I'll always love revolvers for many reasons. I bought an Uberti Colt clone not long ago and when I just want to smile at the range it is my go to. When I cc'd a few different revolvers I noted how the ammo storage in the middle of the gun totally changes the balance of how they felt in a holster. If anyone has carried a G30 you know what I mean. I'd also mention importance of good grips. I had a few super cool old revolvers, I think Colt Cobra if I remember correctly. Stubbed frame and aluminum frame. Between anitiquated sights and a brutal grip unpleasant to shoot even standard 38 special. Modern small frame have fixed this almost completely. Lastly for hunting. I know not a part of the channel but took my first deer with a Ruger SRH, load as hot as you dare, put a good grip on it and very fun, comfortable and accurate. Plus for those like me who want the ultimate is Freedom Arms. I have a 353 where I load rounds so hot you can only use them once as they blow out primer pockets. Have shot sub 1" groups 200 grain hard cast at crazy velocities at 100 yards. So yes, love me some wheelguns. Great video, thanks.

The cylinder must have been out of time. When that happens, the cylinder doesn't align properly with the forcing cone of the barrel and you will get blow back from part of the round and powder charge being blasted past the barrel instead of through it. Some of it hits the frame of the gun and comes right back at you. This is most likely what happened to you. Not safe at all, glad you're okay. The most important thing to know about revolvers is to be sure the cylinder is in time and locks properly before the hammer drops to fire it or you risk serious injury firing it in this condition.
