I’m a type 4, and I think I’m an HSP. I get stressed out very easily. I can’t watch anything that’s too violent or too depressing because it effects me more than it seems to effect others. I’m very sensitive to certain sounds, and noises that don’t seem to bother other people drive me batty. And like in your video, I feel everything intensely and have really high highs, and really low lows. Oh, and I’m an introvert.

I am glad you included the extroverts, I am ENFP definitely an HSP I do not know my Enneagram yet. It seems like the extraverts are left out of the group sometimes by introverts I find that fascinating. And what really sucks is being an extrovert and an HSP put you in such a tiny minority on the planet that you feel like a true alien. May God bless you and everyone reading this!

A lot -- and I mean a LOT -- of neurodivergent people (ADHD/autistics) are HSPs. (Autistics almost by definition.) I'm ADHD and you are SO describing my life in this video. I climb the walls when someone from way down the street has their music up loudly enough for me to hear the bass. Windy days make me insane. I can't stand the feel of mist on my face. Prickly grass hurts my feet. I ADORE the LOTR movies, but there are scenes I can't watch, or have to look away or turn the volume down. I can smell anything a mile away, never could do zoos as a kid (can barely do them as an adult) because THE SMELL. Nuked fish or cruciform veggies send out waves of gross smells that gag me for hours. And God forbid that a skunk should spray near our house in the middle of the night -- it will wake me up, and I'll have to put a pillow with lavender oil on it directly under my nose so I can go back to sleep. SO MANY sensory issues. And yet, the angle of sunlight through late afternoon trees in the summertime can send me into raptures; the shimmer of sunlight on water can bring me such peace; the roar of the ocean BOTH irritates and comforts me. There's a beauty in being an HSP that I wouldn't trade for anything. (Just please don't eat popcorn near me in a movie theater.) (I'm a 6w5, just fyi, but I don't think this sounds like a particularly Six trait, likely more to do with my ADHD.)

I felt like I was being described in a 10 minute video. LOL I'm a counter type 9 wing 1. The older I am, the more sensitive to EVERYTHING I have become. Especially lights, sounds, etc. I have also developed a strong relationship with Jesus which enhances the sensitivity to violence and such. I am extremely empathetic. I can tell when my coworkers are feeling bad or having a bad day. I work at a police department so...it can be quite exhausting. Thank you Abbey. This video was very helpful. I’m a HSP, 4w3 (though my w5 is pretty up there, too), sp/so, and a big introvert by nature even though I appear extroverted to most. Being a HSP used to be really noticeable by people around me when I was younger-but through growing up, traumas, and various experiences, I felt I had to mask it at times. Slowly unlearning that masking tendency and making something that was once viewed as a weakness by many, now a personal superpower for myself!!! I can read rooms well, read between the lines, see beyond what is presented, nurture creative ideas, be resourceful, and I’m really empathetic, compassionate, and strong. Being a 4, it also helped me explore the *why* of certain melancholic subjects and sit with them more… though it is very tricky. I have to be careful not to sink too deeply into dark moments or get too overwhelmed. I think the mention of “pockets of peace” is spot on-it helps me cope and elevate my mood. And establishing boundaries are important as well. To all of the HSPs out there, YOU ARE STRONG AND SUPER, TOO!!! 💪✨💖

Thank you ♡︎ I have an extreme sensitivity to noise, smell, etc, it makes me very unconcentrated and „shut down“ somehow. I often felt being HSP was a flaw. I wished to be more organized, dependable and „robotic“ in a way. Growing up in big loud school classes and cities has been difficult, I always needed to push myself over my limits to endure it. It wasn’t the most healthy thing to do. But I didn’t know anything about HSP or other neurological conditions, that could „explain“ my sensitivity. I thought that I was just „too weak“ to function normally? After my teen years I learned to take better care of myself and listen to my body and set boundaries better. For example, I only go shopping when it’s relatively empty in the shops, and only watch the news when I feel like I have enough energy to deal with bad news of some people suffering somewhere out in the world. It was freeing somehow. It felt like I could finally rest. And then I became able to feel the beautiful things. :) It can really be a gift to be sensitive, feeling things more deeply can make you feel more alive very quickly, it’s almost everyday that I look at something like a pretty flower and my day is made 😆 I wished everyone could get such a rush from a tiny flower. :) All offices would be full of them. Or listen to a song and feel it rushing through your body so intensely. It’s good that the topic is also slowly getting more awareness, it’s helpful to know there can be a difference in peoples limits, just naturally, and that it’s not a flaw, it’s more a matter of adjusting to it the best you can :) (English isn’t my language I hope it was understandable anyway. And I’m a 9 btw :D)

Your English is amazing! And I have so much respect for bilingual people; I am so bad at learning other languages. This is my favorite part of what you said: "It can really be a gift to be sensitive, feeling things more deeply can make you feel more alive very quickly, it’s almost everyday that I look at something like a pretty flower and my day is made. I wished everyone could get such a rush from a tiny flower. :) All offices would be full of them. Or listen to a song and feel it rushing through your body so intensely." That's so beautiful. And a great way to look at the gift of HSP traits.

I think I might be an HSP. I'm a sx 5w4. I don't think I I'm more relational than other 5s, but I do think I have more emotional understanding than other 5s. Plus I am very 5 in the way of noticing everything and often know what's going on with the people around me without having to be told. Not in the heart type way you described it as "knowing who needs a hug" but in a more observational way. I notice how Person A speaks and behaves around Person B and how maybe that's in contrast with how they are with Person C. I notice if they smile more, or less, their body language, how talkative they are or aren't; and what situations and with what people this seems to occur. I notice when conversations suddenly end when others enter a room. I notice hushed voices. I notice red eyes. I notice stifled laughs, and forced ones. I notice faces tired from smiling in contrast to tired faces. I notice changes in long patterns of behavior. I notice changes in how people groom and physically present themselves. I notice changes in energy levels. I remember small details mentioned in passing. I'm taking this all in and trying to make all the puzzle pieces fit at all times. By the time someone actually tells me "Hey did you hear about what happened between Person A and Person B?", I've usually already deduced it for myself.
@DavidPerez-hf1lm

Can a man be HSP? I don't see any (not that there aren't) commenting here. As a man I don't walk in a room and know who needs a hug, but I can tell when someone is feeling stressed, angry, sad, etcetera. And violent or depressing movies or shows are not fun for me. I actually feel physical pain watching, hearing of, or even imagining someone getting hurt. I mean real physical pain. Bright lights, high noises, strong smells, even the sun on my skin can be too much, way too much and I always try to avoid those things. Thanks for the information.

(I feel like I've commented on this video before, but I can't find my comment, LOL, so here goes another!! Hahah) I'm a 2w3, so I naturally relate to the high empathy. I absolutely CANNOT imagine a life where you DON'T feel everything others feel. Like, just now I was trying to think of an example but I literally can't. Huh. I'm not sure if I'm an HSP. My heart tells me I am, but, growing up with an 8 as a dad and a 7w8 as a mom, I kinda erased those traits from myself (or pretend to; 2w3s are also pretty good at that). I remember one time I was watching Stargate SG 1 (or whatever it's called). That show is rated R (I only watched the first episode) because of nudity. I remember watching it and shouting "It should be rated R because of that weird snake cutting into people!" because I could, like, feel (or imagine) their pain if it dug into them. Nobody else agreed with me, haha. This trait is pretty weird, so I'd be surprised if I was one of the small percent. Is this trait "take it or leave it" or are the lines fuzzy, like you can be half-HSP, half-normal? Great video, as always! :D

Little late to the party but here's my 2 cents: I'm an introverted 4w5 and yeah, apparently I'm an HSP as well. Sensitivity to bright lights and loud noises gets me every time. Plus crowds make me nervous. I've actually heard from family and friends, "Gosh, you're so/too sensitive!" I feel like that might be a surefire sign of HSP, don't you? Love the haircut, Abs :-)

Next time your family tells you, you’re too sensitive, say, “well then you’re too insensitive” - As an HSP, I had heard, “you’re too sensitive” from my parents (and siblings) for as long as I can remember… At the suggestion of my therapist, she told me that someone saying I’m too sensitive usually means they are being insensitive and I should call them out on it. Especially if they view sensitivity as a weakness. So I called them both out, pointing out that they were insensitive and I’d rather be sensitive to others and to myself, then to be insensitive. Damn, as soon as I said that, I could tell they never thought of it that way, and neither of them has told me I’m “too sensitive” since then. That was 3 years ago-it took me 30 years of hearing my parents speak negatively about a trait that others admired me for to finally be bold enough to say something back…yep definitely highly sensitive. Them finally accepting me being a HSP, helped me accept & love myself. Words don’t have to sound hateful, to feel hateful. Now, if only I could get my sister to accept me and other HSP’s…but I’m okay if she doesn’t cause I’m finally getting to live authentically without having to completely mask my sensitive side all the time in order to make my family feel better… That can seriously eat away at a person. I’m a 4w5, btw. And I hate crowds too! Good luck! I pray your family sees how amazing you being sensitive is and that it really is a super power! 👊🏼🤙🏼✌🏼

The intro reminded me of Rapunzel when she first leaves her tower! I think Rapunzel may be an HSP too. Lots of people seem to think she’s an INFP but I (as an ISFP 4w3) feel I relate to her way too much. In my mind Belle - while not necessarily an HSP - fits INFP (Type 4w5) way better. ISFPs tend to be a little more proactive about our dreams, like Rapunzel voluntarily leaving her tower. Belle, on the other hand, simply states her dreams and doesn’t ever really act upon them - she’s fortunate enough that the plot sort of “happens” to her. This is not to diminish INFPs in any way - if I could world-build, have the attention span of, and read as well as INFPs I would be ecstatic! I’m simply stating the differences. ISFPs tend to be visual artists, while INFPs tend to stay inside their own heads. Just to clarify, I believe Rapunzel is an ISFP 6w7. I always end up hiding behind a blanket during horror movies. After work/studying at college I always come home and flop onto my bed for at least half an hour just to absorb everything. I don’t mind going to other people’s parties, but depending on the sensory situation I sometimes can’t stay the whole night. I HATE parties thrown in my honour, despite the fact that I have little to no anxiety about performing onstage (I’m a dancer who does theatre too). I’m always either completely obsessed with something or I’m completely apathetic toward it. I can be very impulsive at times, while other times I take way too long to make a decision/take action and procrastinate to oblivion. Surprisingly, caffeine has no effect on me, but sugar does. If I don’t get to sleep before 1am chances are I’m not sleeping that night (this doesn’t happen often, don’t worry!). Just thought I’d share 🎀🌸💖

I think I am a HSP . I do notice those smaller things and need them. The thing is with violence in movies or tv shows I feel like I am in the middle on that I can handle it to a certain degree but then I need about three more light heated movies or something like that. Animation in particular. I am the adult that often leaves the PBD Kids channel on because it’s soothing to me. I also sometimes get bothered by intense emotional scenes or arguments in fiction.

When I was in high school, I remember a time when we were watching a video in a history class. It might have been about the holocaust or something like that. I felt overwhelmed to the point of thinking I was going to faint. Afterwards I didn't really understand why I should have felt that way. Years later, I now know that I am an empath. Sometimes I can pick up on the emotions and feelings of others. I think this happens on a subconscious level half the time. I will feel drained if I've been somewhere busy/noisy or if someone has been telling me all about their problems. It means I need to go off somewhere, ideally in nature, just to find a bit of peace. It's a bit like being an emotional sponge. I avoid watching the news most times because it just depresses me.

Nope. If anything I'm really unfazed by fictional violence & very bad at picking up people stuff. One of my sisters might be one tho (the 6w7 one), and our paternal aunt (a 9?) is another hot candidate. You can't even raise your voice a little bit with the poor woman she'll get upset and beg your forgiveness. Though in her case she's prolly also traumatized on top of it by my horrible grandparents, my sister had a less bad environment so its less extreme for her, she was really shy as a kid but nowadays it really is mostly a strenght, she's really nice tactful & attentive & good at relating to children in her job as a social worker. My aunt is still really impressive because she was raised in a really violent home & then despite this & her struggles, she went on to break the cycle & give her own kid nothing but kindness & devotion. My baby cousin is such a happy kid, well-educated, emotionally expressive, cheerful & sociable... that's really admirable. Sometimes I can't believe that such a kind and artistic woman is the sister of my father - he went & passed the trauma right onto us...

I just found your channel. My Enneagram came out as 6, 5, 3. On the Myers Briggs I’m an INFJ. I test as an HSP. The comment I want to make is that I have adapted to this trait. I’m 68 years old and less reactive than when I was younger. I think it’s because I’ve learned to adapt and reframe situations so they don’t impact me as strongly.

1w9 HSP here. My busy schedule is draining me right now. I try to find the most quiet area in the student center when I go get lunch. The lunch room is just way too noisy! I am so overwhelmed by the layers of homework I have for one class, I can only do a little bit of it at a time, which makes it look like I am procrastinating, when I am actually not. I need to rest my overstumulated brain so much that its hard to finish homework on time. I am learning how to beileve that sensativity is a gift. 😊

My boss called me a week or so ago on my day off. And ridiculed me for something that she normally wouldn't have an issue with. Directly after that me and my wife and child got in the car and headed off to our planned excursion. But I immediately turned around and went back home because what she did but upset me so much that it it ruined our entire weekend because I couldn't get it out of my head. She's probably mad at me because she found out I'm looking for another job but it's not like I'm just going to quit on her without a notice other employees quit and she wishes them good luck so why would she be so upset with me or just trying to better myself????

I'm a 5w4 and I definitely have some traits of HSP. I can be pretty sensitive to violence or nearly anything negative in media (doesn't stop me from consuming it, but I still feel some of those things on a very deep level). In generel I feel like such things stay in my mind very long. Also I'm super sensitive to other's emotions. When I know someone around me feels bad I do as well and can't concentrate on my tasks. When it comes to noises and stuff, I feel like I can ignore them pretty well. But there are certain (random) things I can't stand at all 😅

I don't know if it's because I learned (and still do) how to shutdown or masking (I don't know if it's possible) to get by the day. What I usually do with what you said: 1. I don't like them, but I get used to some. I try to look the silver line on those kind of stories, but more than not, I ignore all of them. 2. Sometimes the feelings are just too much, I feel like I want to scream. My mind won't stop ranting "stop!" over and over again. Breathing exercises and distractions like music or movies kind of help. Things to read too. 3. I thought I was alone on the cloth and fabric thing. Sounds and lights are sometimes overwhelming, so I just (usually if I can) hold my breath, cover my eyes and ears. 4. I don't know. I try to not be nosy on someone else's business. 5. Pockets? Yeah, sort of. 6. I might not be an experto on a lot of areas, but yeah. One learn to really enjoy the small things in life. 7. That fails me sometimes. And sometimes people is not comfortable sharing something so sensitive with other people (see point 4). 8. Being told that all my life.
