To this day, my father, a huge fan of Maradona, can’t get over this match and the despair it caused him. From these highlights, it seems to me that Germany outplayed Argentina most of the game, but that penalty is questionable to say the least.

I've never seen any review of this match that includes fouls made against Maradona inside germans penalty area. If I am not mistaken they dropped Maradona 2 or 3 times inside penalty area, by the end of the match, they were clear penalties, but referre didn't react at all. Where is that episode, why nobody shows it ?

Germany was by far the better side and could had won it by 3-0 but this doesn't change the fact that Argentina was robbed by the referee in the second half

Without penalty it would have been impossible for the Germans to net a ball against a few players as most of the Argentines had already been sent out with red cards
This was the most one sided final in World Cup history with one way traffic - West Germany attacking and Argentina defending for dear life (by hook or by crook) over the entire duration of the match. In fact, I don’t remember Argentina registering even a single shot at goal over 90+ minutes, even when down 1-0 late in the second half. That said, the Germans were uncharacteristically abysmal with their finishing, peppering the Argentine goal with shots, most of which lacked any serious accuracy or quality - a strange turn of events considering their superlative attacking performances in the earlier rounds of the tournament. Footballing justice was done when the Germans finally broke the deadlock- albeit from a highly controversial penalty awarded by a less than adequate referee given the gravity of the occasion - the final of a World Cup. And sadly, the only moment of real quality was Andreas Brehme’s expertly dispatched penalty, a hugely disappointing outcome given the world class talent at hand, particularly within the German ranks. And as for Argentina, Maradona was invisible, contributing only with petulant fouls, play acting and crybaby gestures which somewhat diminished his overall legacy as a footballer…
Maradona had a badly swollen ankle for the whole tournament. There were pictures of his ankle swollen. Try playing soccer with a swollen ankle like he had. It was a miracle he was even able to play let alone make it to the finals. Not to mention you had Argentina players sent off with red cards and Germany barely won the match lol. What a disaster of a win to be honest. Lets be honest even the penalty kick was a bad call.
Un final muy aburrida. Soy argentino y maradoniano pero no se puede jugar una final sin patear al arco. Entiendo que no estaba Caniggia y 3 titulares más , y que había muchos lesionados.... Pero dezottti.... Por dios, es horrible. Calderón? Ufff.... Burruchaga no estaba para jugar. Maradona tampoco pero era Maradona... Sobraban defensas y faltaban delanteros en esa plantilla

Asi bueno si vos lo ves asi me parece que bueno tenia un equipo llenos de lesionados y suspendidos asi y todo eliminamos a brasil y al local que era el favorito senga no habia recibido un gol y se lo hiso mi seleccion y bueno le regalaron a los alemanes el sorete de codesal fijate cuando le hacen fau a calderon en el area antes del invento del penal igual no importa le ganamos a brasil en brasil la final de la copa america bailamos a italia en la euro americana en wenbley 3 a o y lo pasamos por arriba a francia en la final que por un milagro de la vida se gano x penales era para un tres a cero facil pero el futbol es asi por eso es el mejor deporte del mundo 👍🏆🏆🏆⚽

The defender lunges in wildly, and I don't think he even touches the ball before he trips Klinsmann, who had deftly stepped over the ball as the defender lunged. With the penalty that they DID receive and convert, Goycochea got close to it, he had a great tournament.

Brutta finale. Ma GIUSTO il risultato. Stando al percorso fatto nel Mondiale fino a quel momento, era la GERMANIA a meritare la Coppa del Mondo. Una brutta Argentina, dopo aver superato a stento i gironi, arrivata in finale grazie ai rigori, sperava di vincere ai rigori pure la finale. INVECE, la perse per un rigore! Che C'ERA. E giustizia (sportiva) fu fatta. E Maradona imparò a sue spese, che anche nel suo caso, la superbia parte a cavallo, e torna a piedi.
I love Germany, from Gerd Muller to Franz Buckenbuer,, to my favourite ( though he could not lift the FIFA, , Karl Heinz Romenegue) who played in the 1982 and 1986 final. But people want to see the FIFA final match (which takes place after every four years) impartially. In the 1990 FIFA, many player were kicked badly near the balcony of the goal post( if you don't believe me, see for yourself all the quarter finals, and semi finals). In such kicks, not a single referee has ever given a penalty for it. And here, Edgardo Codessal Mendeze, the referee who controlled the final, immediately gave a penalty in the 85th minute of the game. Was this FIFA politics, or Edgardo Codessal Mendeze took a wrong pill in his dress up room before entering the stadium????😊

What an awful final this was. I've seen every final since 1974, and I think this is the worst. Even worse than USA '94 (even though that had no goals in regulation).
