In September 2018, four friends decided to ride their bikes across Japan without a clue of what to expect. Arigatou is the product of this adventure, a short film that takes you from Osaka to Tokyo via the infamous Mount Norikura, the highest paved road in Japan.

This was a personal choice - mainly to cut down on bulk while touring and also to stay cool in the warmer weather. We did check the law in Japan and riding without a helmet is legal, so we made the choice to ride without them to keep our heads cool more than anything. Again, a personal choice.

Nice video! Looks like you guys took a train from Osaka airport to town to start riding? Was it ok taking the train with a bike box? I am aware that the airport is quite a ways, but couldn't you just ride out of the airport? I'm planning on bringing my bike on my next trip to Japan, thank you!
@Restrapltd
@Restrapltd 3 года назад
That's right, we took the train to Osaka City Station from the Airport. It was easy. Looking on google we saw the only road from the airport to the mainland looked like a freeway with no cycleway, so we hauled the bike boxes onto the train. We didn't encounter any issues. You will need to do the same because apparently bikes need to be in a box or Rinko bag before they're allowed on a train.

Just left him on the road? Wow
@Restrapltd
@Restrapltd 4 года назад
I appreciate it might seem like we just left him in the film but I'll write a bit more of a detailed synopsis of what happened. After riding past Mt Fuji, we ended up on an incredibly busy motorway type of road which we only carried on with because of the amount of road-cyclists also on it. We wanted to get off it as soon as possible so we were riding around 22mph in a line formation to clear it quickly. It was during this that Joe went off the back after a puncture while in a tunnel where we couldn't hear him shout. When we realised he was no longer with us we moved to the side of the road to wait imagining he had gotten a puncture or mechanical. After an hour we started stopping passing cyclists to ask them if they had seen anyone to match his description, absolutely none of them had. This made us think he had turned off the road. After looking at google maps for 10 minutes, we saw there were 20 turn-offs he could of taken.. all leading to different towns but then reconnecting with the road we were on, closer to our destination for the day. As he had no method of communication, we decided the best thing to do was to carry on to Hadano as he was no longer on the road we were following and he was likely waiting for us further down the route, maybe even at our destination. It was there that we contacted the police to search for him and he walked in moments later. The reason no one saw Joe who was cycling down the same road as us is because Joe thought it would be safer to climb over the road barrier and into some bushes to fix his puncture, which is where he was bitten and passed out. It was all very distressing losing our friend with no phone and waiting for him at different intervals for about 3-4 hours in total and we were just making group decisions based on what we could do. The moral of the story... always have a group meeting point, methods of communicating each other and a strong knowledge of where you are going for the day in case you end up getting separated.

@@Fabian-ob2mh No worries at all! Our first night on the outskirts of Osaka was more because we originally went the wrong way (gps was set to navigate to beginning of the route which was at the airport, and we found out we had to get a train into the city in the first place). The tents we used were Naturehike Cloud up 2 and unless it was raining we only slept in the inner to keep a breeze flowing through. All our sleeping bags were different but I used a Snugpak Jungle Bag because of its built-in mosquito net and light-weight body. Also used a Sea to Summit sleeping mat.
