Arma 3 Stealth Test - Part 1: Infantry during daytime

I have generated this stealth / detection test to understand Arma's limitations whilst creating a stealth based mission, hopefully it will help others. It could also be useful if you are new to Arma or just struggle in general sneaking into a mission area.
This is Part 1 - focusing on infantry detection during the day.
Each stance was repeated with the Ai facing away and then towards player.
NOTE: 'fast paced crouch' has no benefit against Ai !

3:00 You can actually crawl even slower than that by pressing W+S or aiming down your sight before starting to move. But that really should get the same result as this one.

sound always played a big part in arma , there are even some old posts from the arma 2 era where you can see the ai turning to where he has heard the player behind a face and constantly following the noise , the stealth system in arma games is quite realistic and relatively simple , problem is that people think that they are playing splinter cell

@@mcsmash4905 yeah after playing a fair bit of antistasi I can see enemies watching me through walls because they can hear me. It’s a neat system but it’s tough to understand where it’s boundaries lie

@@thebulletkin8393 i think alot more things factor in than most people realise for example , during one of my first patrols in the east wind campaign i was spotted by a random guy like 300 meters away as i was walking alongside the hillside which was exposed to the sun and no trees , later when i moved underneath the trees nobody saw me , while back in arma 2 i got within 50 meters of an enemy while being prone in a forest during a daytime stealth mission and he was looking straight at me , all in all i genuinely love stealth missions in arma (apex protocol goes hard)

You can set ai's spotting speed and distance with init commnds. Also if you set up ai in small groups of 1 to 3 you won't have a whole army on you if doing a stealth mission. You'll still get detected a lot though. Wish they patch the ai a bit so they are less aware.

Thanks for the info! - hopefully it will help others too & yes I wish there was a way to alter the ai for a stealth based mission. Maybe some hero will make a mod?

White Raven yes another thing that can help so they don't look stupid standing there is by setting the ai up with animations or putting them on cycled patrols. There are videos on RU-vid that explain how to do it. So you can have guys leaning on walls and stuff.

Hi Mark Yes i remember seeing a video on animations and they look very good but then the Ai are just like a bush (won't react if you are not good at stealth). It would be nice to have a happy medium.

remember also that enemy ai with skill set at 1 and higher are basically Chuck Norris on coke and if it is set at 0.1 or lower they are like stormtroopers from star wars.

Wasn't there something about being on open roads / pavements giving the AI a huge bonus to detection?

@@WhiteRaven the game have some rudimentary camo rating system in work so. crawling towards them in appropriate camo for grass takes you a lot closer then crawling whit say a Black T-shirt and jeans in the grass.

Since ARMA 1, a man type entity (infantry) will have its visible portion partially obscured when atop terrain with vegetation, but will not be obscured when atop ground that has no concealment. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-b6bWaeSN9iM.html

yeah thats cool and all but even if you shoot them with a silenced weapon every single enemy in the area will be locked on you

Yes you are right although using a suppressor and cover will buy you more time before they lock onto you. Their behaviour (reacting if a shot is fired) is realistic as a suppressor does not completely silence the weapon in RL too (which I'm sure you know). It would however be great if one of the clever guys made a MOD or script that replicated fictional silencers (or maybe they exist in RL SP?) so us fans of stealth could set up missions like splinter cell & metal gear.

@@WhiteRaven Totally, and that's something I've really been realizing lately since playing ARMA. Splinter cell, metal gear solid, and hitman used to be my favorite games in the world. But after realizing through Arma that a single guy going commando, sneaking around the enemy unseen and taking them out one at a time doesn't actually happen in real life. Let's just say, it didn't make me not like Arma, it increased my suspension of disbelief with stealth games.

@@IDontReadReplies42069 stealth happens in real life if you use a blade. A good example is the Commando dagger, a long dagger with a sharp tip that is designed so you come up behind the enemy, put one hand over their mouth while driving the dagger down behind the left collarbone straight into the heart... Much more silent than a suppressed assault rifle. The only real shame here is that you have to download mods to be able to do any kind of melee in Arma.

@@Preywinder believe there are a few guns in the world that almost completely silent. sadly all of them have the problem of a ranger thats about spitting range (5-50m) and slow rate of fire. one was so silent that it was manually chambered because the sound of metal gliding against each other and the empty brass hitting the concrete floor was the loudest part of the gun. that and the silencer bit usually was worn out after about 5 rounds or so if not less.

@@Zack_Wester to be fair the key word is "suppressor" as oppose to "silencer". The former being the most common because, as you said, very few firearms can be silenced. Suppressors are generally useful in that even if someone hears the weapon firing it is much more difficult to know where it came from, and this is something I do see in Arma with the AI - start hitting a patrol with a suppressed weapon and it takes longer for them to see exactly where you are than if you go loud. I'm not saying the AI is perfectly realistic... it's a game after all :P it is certainly viable to come at them using realistic tactics/strategy.

Single player is useful to get an understanding of the games logic. The best way is to create your own SP missions.

@@xherdos400 I have found that Zeus is best for quick games and additional enemy but can't compete with custom mission for ambience & scope but that's just my opinion
