We will compare Art of Fighting for the Neo Geo against the console ports released for the Super NES, Sega Genesis, & PC Engine. Art of Fighting (102 Mb) was the first Neo Geo game to exceed 100 megabits and featured several characteristics that would become standard for future fighters. All opinions for the home ports are based off my observations.
0:00 - Introduction to Art of Fighting for the Neo Geo
4:58 - Super NES port of Art of Fighting
9:23 - Side-by-side comparison between the Neo Geo and Super NES
10:54 - Sega Genesis port of Art of Fighting
15:18 - Side-by-side comparison between the Neo Geo and Sega Genesis
16:48 - PC Engine port of Art of Fighting
21:12 - Side-by-side comparison between the Neo Geo and PC Engine
22:42 - Art of Fighting closing comments
24:41 - Comparison between all four versions
The PC Engine port requires the use of the Arcade Card. Here are the requirements:
If you own a PC Engine Duo, Duo-R, or a Super CD-ROM unit, use the Arcade Card Duo.
If you own the original PC Engine CD-ROM unit, use the Arcade Card Pro.
The Arcade Card Duo contains the additional 2048 KB (2 MB) of RAM to play Arcade CD-ROM titles, as the Duo, Duo-R, and Super CD-ROM units have the 256 KB of RAM already built in.
The Arcade Card Pro contains the 256 KB of RAM for Super CD-ROM games, plus the additional 2048 KB of RAM (2 MB) to play Arcade CD-ROM games, for a total of 2304 KB (2.25 MB).

The SNES version has no parallax at all because of Mode 7 limitations (1 layer only). But it's super cool how they made sprite shrinking too. And the Dolby Surround sound!

I give the SNES version credit for using the shrinking. Mr. Big and Mr. Karate themes are my favorite in that version.

You made a great job in this comparison. I said that about image because MVS version had RGB colors. So s-video is the mininum to use in these comparisons versus arcade one. But I know too that Pc Engine version had a great image in AV connection.
@NeoTurboManiac78
@NeoTurboManiac78 3 года назад
Thank you very much! I make a full effort to provide as much detail as possible. My consolized MVS is the only system (of the ones I used for this video) that I have s-video cables for. Unfortunately, the PC I used to record the footage kicked the bucket, so I can't use my capture device. I switched to another device that does not require a PC, but it doesn't support s-video, but it does support component. I've spent hundreds of dollars over the years on recording equipment, some of which was not worth it, and I reach the point where I don't want to invest more. I can always look into other cables. I just hope that they work.

The Nec Super Grafx was actually made to be closer to the Mega Drive other than the color. I dont know if alot of people realize that. The Turbo Grafx 16 was my favorite console as a kid because of the superior composite image but after having my Mega Drive, SNES & TG16 boosted to RGB. The Mega Drive is my favorite console of all time now. Even though the SNES and PC Engine both can put more colors on the screen. Art Of Fighting is one game that looks more colorful on the Mega Drive and its a beautiful game in RGB on the Mega Drive. When comparing the music on the Neo Art Of Fighting. The Mega Drive's music sounds the closest to the Arcade version. I was comparing the game on a Sega Genesis VA6.5 which has the best sound out of all the Genesis revisions. The Mega Drive in my opinion was the closet thing you could get to a Neo Geo minus the color being that the Resolution was similar. Most Neo Geo and Mega Drive games showcased in Higher Resolution and where many SNES and PC Engine games showcased in lower resolution (even though the PC Engine and SNES are both capable of doing high resolution).

PC Engine's version of Street Fighter II' Champion Edition is even more impressive, considering it runs only on a HU-Card (so you can run it on the very first PC Engine hardware released in 1987 without any addition !!!), and it was the most complete and faithful port to date (the SNES only had SF2 vanilla by the time, and lacked some moves/animations/details, and the game wasn't released yet on Genesis/Megadrive)... not bad for a 8 bits (although it has a 16 bit graphic co-processor) released in late 1987 :-) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hToclCtLN1k.html

Been playing each version recently to see how they all compared to the arcade version and if I am honest I prefer the SNES version out of the three because of not only being able to have one off matches against the cpu but the ending expands on the arcade version. Very thorough details on all of the versions! I didn't like how the SNES version completely overdoses on the reverb sound for every single punch, kick, and impact. Also noticed it looks like the SNES version is the only version to edit out the bartender's cigarette as that would not be in line with Nintendo's decency standards. The Sega version almost seems to play up the smoke animation even more than the Neo Geo!

I actually like the Genesis version better than the PC Engine and SNES versions. Even though Sega took out the Zoom effect. The Genesis plays the game in Fuller Screen than the PC Engine and SNES versions. The Black Bar on the top always bothered me on the PC Engine and SNES versions. Also in my opinion the Genesis version has the best looking backgrounds compared to the PC Engine and SNES versions. Especially the last stage, where in my opinion looks even better than the Neo Version. Also I always loved the music in John's stage in the Genesis Version and liked how the backgrounds were closer to the Neo Version with the 2 helicopters. Now as far as gameplay many like the gameplay on the Genesis Version compared to even the Neo Version being that many dont like how the Zoom effect makes the gameplay worst in some people's opinion. The Genesis Version gives more of a Street Fighter 2 feel to Art of Fighting with no Zoom Effect. I do prefer the PC Engine Version more than the SNES Version but like I said I always hated the bar on that version on the top and also stuff missing in the backgrounds. Like the John and last stage looks way better on the Genesis than the PC Engine in my opinion. Also the Parallax scrolli ng in the Genesis Version makes it a must have. I own the Genesis and PC Engine versions and played the SNES version plenty of times at a friends house back in the day.

@@Atariatari-ky9te I agree about how good the Genesis version looks, but the alterations to the gameplay makes it feel like Street Fighter II, as you said, but the point of Art of Fighting is that it's supposed to provide an alternate experience to Street Fighter II, which is why I was critical of the Genesis port.
@Atariatari-ky9te
@Atariatari-ky9te 4 года назад
@@NeoTurboManiac78 Understood. I guess it does make the Genesis version stand out a little. I feel Sega did a great job on the game and there reason of not having the zoom effect some say is because they felt that the gameplay would have been worst. Im not sure if that is true or not. The Genesis version is very good looking game and the last stage really shines compared to the other versions. I also dislike the SNES version because I never liked the way that the SNES produced sound it sounds like a compressed remixed MP3 and muffled in my opinion (almost like its coming out of a cave or something lol). Im a DJ and audiophile and I never liked the compressed sound of the SNES. Do you like Street Fighter 2 Special Champion Edition better than Street Fighter 2 CE for the PC Engine and Street Fighter 2 Turbo for the SNES? In my opinion the Genesis has the best version of that game as well being that it always feels like a Complete game for me compared to the other two. I also disliked how the PC Engine and SNES versions are playing in lower resolution than the Genesis Version. The PC Engine Version of Street Fighter 2 is good but reminds me of like a computer game and is missing a lot compared to the Genesis Version. The SNES Version sound I dont prefer like I said before i dont like the compressed/sped up remixed sound of the SNES. I was born in the 80's and loved arcade games and for me the Mega Drive always brought a better arcade experience for me being that most of the time it displayed games in Higher Resolution when compared to the SNES and PC Engine (TG16) ports and the gameplay most of the time was on point.

@@Atariatari-ky9te We all have are preferences, when it comes to certain versions of games. Art of Fighting has its characteristics that separates it from Street Fighter II.The Neo Geo fighters descend from the original Street Fighter. I liked how they experimented with different types of gimmicks, features, etc. Some of the audio in the Genesis port I found to be unpleasant, because I do have some sensitivity toward certain types of loud beats or noises. As for Street Fighter II, the biggest advantage the Genesis version has is the layout of the six button controller. I prefer the Genesis version over the Super NES port in that department. For the PC Engine version, not many, myself included, thought that Street Fighter II would come out the way it did. The PC Engine port had the best voice samples. Genesis had static and SNES was off pitch. I played the Genesis version the most back in the 90's, as I did not buy the PC Engine version until around 2000. I'm a huge arcade enthusiast as well, being born in the 1970's, which is why I enjoy doing these types of videos. I collect a lot of arcade console ports across many generations. I've been a big supporter of the TurboGrafx/PC Engine since the early 90's, because of its interesting lineup of games and that it was the underdog.

Obviously, it's a Neo Geo original and the other games are ports but the Neo Geo itself is identical inside to a Sega Megadrive/Genesis, Motorola 68000 CPU. Zilog Z80 Sound controller And Yamaha YM2612 + Texas Instruments SN76489 Sound Chips on the Megadrive And the slightly less YM2610 on the Neo Geo to the MegaGenesis Porting from the Neo Geo should be a far more seamless task than to any other machine. The SNES was technically far superior to the Neo Geo or the Megadrive but a port is always just a port.
@TurboXray
@TurboXray 2 года назад
That literally has nothing to do with it! Game logic is independent of the ISA of the processor - lol. And the video hardware is just sooooo different than the Megadrive that it has to be redone from scratch anyway. As well as other things like rom space, which also why you re-write code. And if you end up re-writing code, then definitely make no difference if they share the same CPU. The PCE version uses a completely different CPU, yet when you look at the source code - they translated the 68k code into 6280 code. The z80 on the MD is not in the same configuration, and has it's own limitations. The FM chip on the Neo Geo is pretty much a background audio chip as the vast majority of the music comes from the ADPCM channels. There are soo many differences, that .. no.. it's not going to be a seamless task.
@humansrants1694
@humansrants1694 2 года назад
Neo Geo had the same CPUs but they ran at a faster clock and it had more memory the Neo Geos two graphics chips were 24bit on a 24bit data bus and one of those GPUs ran at 24mhz the Neo Geo could use far more data storage for the game data. Megadrive had three sample channels vs the Neo Geo's 7 and the extra data in the cartridges allowed far more samples at a higher sample rate.

I get what your saying. I agree that the Genesis port looks better than the SNES or PC Engine versions. The zoom feature in later Neo Geo titles such as Double Dragon and Waku Waku 7, stretched out the entire length of the stage. It offers two options, close and long range combat. I was critical of the gameplay of the Genesis version, because it deviated from the arcade. Art of Fighting and Street Fighter II are two very different fighters. Art of Fighting is supposed to be a different experience, focusing on timing and conservation. If it plays too similarly to Street Fighter II, then I would just play the latter.

@@NeoTurboManiac78 I feel you. I have compared all 3 versions (Mega Drive, PC Engine & S.Famicom) via RGB and have to say that the Mega Drive does look better. The PC Engine & SNES RGB picture is somewhat blurry when compared to the Mega Drive IMO. The Mega Drive has the clearest and sharpest RGB picture when compared to the PC Engine & S.Famicom. Love the PC Engine though it is my second favorite game console of all time behind the Mega Drive.

A think PC Engine zoom isn't good as it is showed. I like the sound but it is a cd game

The 'zoom" feature for that version can be an eyesore for newcomers. I still applaud the effort.

@@NeoTurboManiac78 I consider normal the zooming on MVS and Snes, but the PC Engine one is disgusting, like you said: It was complicade for players (I consider I'm not newcomer in AoF, but just in this turbografx version)

Funny that, because the MD can do the same type of zoom effect as the PCE (switching res, using h-int to get a vertical scale). I bet all the MD fanbois would be signing its praise if it was in that port hahah

Mega drive/Genesis version had better gameplay and is fast.

It is fast, but it goes against the nature of what the combat system in this game is supposed to be about, which is why I was critical of the Genesis port. For that, I would rather play Street Fighter II Special CE for that system.

@@NeoTurboManiac78 I think not. Snes has an original ending, great musics and Damage Moves for all characters. Mega has a great and fast gameplay. PC Engine has only big Sprites, and good zooms in/out, but snes one is good either.

This game is awesome. I would say that, IMO, the Mega Drive version is BY FAR the best home console port in every conceivable way. The Pc-Engine take is good, but do remember that it's an 8 bit console and it shows. The SNES version is just pitiful. Graphically it's easily the worst, lacking detail everywhere. Some stages even lack a floor! the sound isn't that great, the inputs are a bit off and also the zoomed stages change gameplay in a pretty claustrophobic way. Do remember that it also runs at a lower res than the Genesis version. I wouldn't recommend it.

I've been a fan of the TurboGrafx/PC Engine longer than many retro gaming fans have been alive. I am aware of all the details. I did multiple playthroughs for each version for this video.

Lol, how is the PC Engine showing its 8-bit weakness here? It’s definitely the best outside AES/NG-CD realm version. What does 8-Bit mean anyway? I bet you can’t explain me the difference and what impact it could have in terms of what you see on the screen.
