Exactly!! It's probably why Clueless and Legally Blonde are some of my all-time favs. Elle Woods had all the ingredients to be a stereotypical self-involved dumb blonde, but she's genuinely nice and quick on her feet. Like Cher, you're ALWAYS rooting for them. 100% feel-good movies and I'm always down to watch them for the hundredth time, lol.

The quote, “No, she’s a full-on Monet. It’s like a painting, see? From far away, it’s OK, but up close, it’s a big old mess,” proves that Cher isn't as dense as people would like to believe. She's only interested in learning about things that catch her attention and tends to tune out the things that don't. She can miss the mark regarding people's desires, but I like her willingness to admit her faults and make changes to correct them. Also, I think at her cord she is a good friend.

They did a really good job of portraying her after the character "Emma" in Jane Austen's "Emma". It's rare for a modern version to be so respectful of the classic version that's the story is based upon. Emma was described as being beautiful, wealthy, spoiled, highly intelligent, but intellectually lazy...and devoted to her father.

I love this movie. It was such a refreshing turn that although Cher was a spoiled rich, popular, fashion savvy beautiful girl, she was not a mean girl. The few times that she kind of inconsiderate it was not only not out of malice, but also not even a "I don't care" just clueless. She did care about and take care of people. Her immediate reaction to Tai as an image of disaster was to help her rather than bully or even tease her, or avoid her altogether. Even though setting up the teachers did have the ulterior motive of changing her grade, she was legitimately more excited about how cute they were together than she was about getting the better grade.

As a Swedish person, I'm very offended that you don't know who Pippi Longstocking is. (just kidding) Pippi Longstocking is a Swedish children's book written by Astrid Lindgren. It's been translated into loads of languages and is, or at least was, hugely popular. The character Pippi is a young girl who is extremely strong. Knocking out baddies and bending iron bars kind of strong. Her hair is always in two braids, which is why Josh thought Cher looked like her. Pippi has been extremely important as a female role model for kids, with her being a ~10 year old girl who is basically a superhero. She also has a horse that lives inside her house, which is pretty damn awesome too.

I grew up with this movie and totally was crushing on Josh (Paul Rudd) watching this. The dad is awesome for sure but I really did like Alicia as Cher, she really did have charm and like you said she was genuinely a decent person just a bit spoiled and naive. She wanted to do good at first it was for her benefit but she did enjoying seeing others happy, then she realizes the error in her ways and decides to change. I also like Josh and her back & forth exchanges great chemistry. I remember a lot of people watching this movie and even now new reactors getting freaked out that he is her ex-step-brother even tho they aren't related by blood and they weren't close before this. I didn't really get it then or now, I just thought that made a great couple so I was glad to see that wasn't even an issue here.

I wouldn't say it was iconic to my childhood, since I was 25 when it came out, but it was culturally significant, much like The Princess Bride was, which was part of my childhood. My husband and I loved Clueless. We used to watch it every couple of years up until Brittany Murphy (Tai) died. It was kind of hard to watch after that. Seeing it again was bittersweet, but not as hard as I thought it would be.

This movie came out when I was in 4th grade and it was HUGE! Everyone in my class quoted it constantly. It was a big part of the zeitgeist of the 90s. I, personally, became outrageously obsessed with it. Its soundtrack defined a lot of my taste in music, I had the novelization, I watched the TV show. Fun fact, Paul Rudd guest starred on an episode of the TV show as a different character than Josh (as both Josh and Cher had been recast for the show). His character's name was Sonny. Get it? It wasn't until my twenties that I got introduced to Jane Austen and, subsequently, obsessed (as I tend to do). Then I found out that Clueless was an adaptation of Emma. Then I watched it again and loved the movie just as much as an adult. It really holds up! After being asked for the millionth time what my favorite movie is, I had to sit down and do some math. I have a special affinity for rom coms and teen movies. I loooooove a good adaptation. Clueless is an especially personal piece of nostalgia for me. The story is a really positive, optimistic one. The filmmaking is topnotch. It's just a very well-written, well-made movie. So after debating it, I realized Clueless was my favorite movie. Then Everything, Everywhere, All At Once came out. Now it's my second-favorite.

Clueless is a perfect modern take on Jane Austen’s ‘Emma’. It’s a shining example of how you can make a modern Austen novel without butchering the original source material the way the modern Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion films were done. It shows what a true fan of the original novel can produce with a little creativity and a lot of heartfelt thought. I love Austen and I love Clueless.

Not many people catch that it's Emma. It's a well done retelling of it. And Alicia Silverstone fueled the dreams of a generation of us. This is a major guilty pleasure movie. It's just fun. Everyone in it is good at their roles. It's also fun seeing Paul Rudd go from this to being Ant Man and realizing he hasn't really aged more than 1 year in the last 30. As clueless as Cher can be, she's actually a good person. Especially as she comes to realize some things toward the back half of the film. And the dad is the OG. He knows when to be scary (and can back it up), he knows when to be firm, but he also knows when to praise and be calm. He's a good guy.

Love, love, love Clueless. It’s definitely my favorite in this genre. Growing up in the 90s, you couldn’t get away with not watching this. I was an early teen at that time and Alicia Silverstone was a stone cold fox, still is. I love the writing. Amy Heckerling really took the time to understand teens of that era. She used established slang familiar to kids that parents just didn’t understand, as well as created some of her own for these characters. This movie is both a product of it’s time and timeless all at once. I think the adaptation of Emma lends itself to the universal understanding it has while the clothing and slang capture a special time in American history, the 90s. So glad you finally watched this classic!

First: the novel of "Emma" is often my favorite Jane Austen work: she wrote it after "Pride and Prejudice" with the direct aim of creating a heroine only she would love. The story is chockful of funny and complicated characters; Austen, as she often does, is hard on her heroine, but gifts her with that essential Austen asset: the ability to learn from your mistakes. The community in "Emma" is lively and lifelike: I feel like I could get to know the streets and stores. Fully recommend the original source. The dad was played by then-very-popular character actor Dan Hedaya. I first saw him in both "Hill Street Blues" and in "Cheers". He's wonderfully versatile and always a great supporting actor to anyone he's with - as you can see here in every scene, from the longer and deeper ones with Alicia Silverstone to even the short one with Christian. Here he is in a different mode: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o_UbjnxMSYM.html

You don’t know any Paulie Shore movies!? They were a huge part of the 90’s. Start with Encino Man with Brendan Fraser, then Bio-Man, Son-in-law, and In the Army Now.

Take note ladies. If you want to get out of class, especially with a male teacher, just tell them you're surfing the crimson wave.

I also grew up with The Princess Bride! Everyone in my family can quote the movie. When my husband and I first started dating we found out that it was both of our all time favorite movies❤️

I loved being a teenager in the 90's!! The best times 🥰 It was definitely the peak teen rom-com era!

So many actors from these movies, that have died young. 🙏🏼 Britanny Murphy (Ty) RIP Yes, this is a modern version of Emma, like Bridget Jones's Diary is for Pride and Prejudice.

Didn't notice it before, but Josh is reading Nietzsche when she gets him to go drive with her. Foreshadowing much? (Nietzsche was supposedly boinking his sister and wrote about it in his book, My Sister and I)

He knows Heathers but not Christian Slater? Make it make sense. also, Pauly Shore was best known for the movie Encino Man with a young Brendan Frasier and the Goofy movies. Edit: Also, Marky Mark, who was a bad boy recording artist known for sagging his pants indecently, is in fact Mark Wahlberg

I would strongly suggest Eurotrip. No one ever reacts to it but its hilarious. And has Michelle Trachtenberg in it 😊

That would be a great movie to react to! A lot of it would have to be blurred... "This isn't where I parked my car!"

“You played Emma really well here.”😳 Uh, Thor buddy, this movie is actually meant to be a modern reworking of Jane Austin’s Emma. If you knew that going in and mentioned it, I completely missed. If you didn’t know about that, your observation was pretty damn uncanny and impressive.

This I one of my childhood movies, and it's incredible how it still somehow gets better every time I watch it. 😂 At the time it meant so much to me to have a popular, wealthy black role-model, but I didn't even notice the gay representation until I was older. Such a deceptively sweet and intelligent film.

Great reaction! I first watched this movie on VHS when I was 12 years old and I was obsessed! Still love it 27 years later. I don't know how many times I've watched it over the years but it's been a lot, definitely a comfort movie for me. It also introduced me to Jane Austen books and movies, which I still love. 💖

Such a great movie. As a gay teenager in the 90's I loved these characters and especially loved the positive, if even brief, representation in this movie in an era where if it wasn't arthouse or a movie about AIDS then the word "gay" wasn't ever uttered and most entertainment didn't even acknowledge our existence. Also had some really great music that I still bop to to this day.

Did you really not know that Tony Curtis is like a gay icon with his films “Some Like It Hot” and “Spartacus”? (Especially “Spartacus”, which is very homoerotic!) I only wanted to see this because it starred Alicia Silverstone and her gorgeous hair. I remember her with Liv Tyler in music videos for Aerosmith. SO lesbionic, they were great together! I did NOT know about “Emma”. I knew of it but it just didn’t sound very interesting. So now it’s interesting (ummm…. snickers.)
