Ashwagandha Root is known for reducing anxiety, boosting mood, and even gains in muscle and strength. In this video we look at the science behind the benefits of consuming Ashwagandha.
► The Ashwagandha Extract I Take: bit.ly/ashwagandha66
What is Ashwagandha? For thousands of years, Ashwagandha Root (Withania somnifera) has been one of the staples of Traditional Indian Medicine.
Always consult a doctor or physician before beginning a nutritional supplement. This video is entertainment, I am not a doctor and this video is not medical advice. If I can find them I include affiliate links.
In traditional indian medicine it is classified as rasayana meaning it is believed to lead to long life, similarly in more modern times, medicine tends to classify it as an adaptogen. Adaptogens are compounds which allow the body to deal with the physical and chemical effects of stress.
It’s no surprise then that one of its most celebrated benefits is an apparent reduction in feelings of anxiety and a boost in mood. As people began to understand the importance of hormones, claims began to surface that ashwagandha possesses the direct ability to reduce the stress hormone cortisol.
Ayurvedic Medicine also classifies it as bhalya, signifying a belief it increases strength, and as vajikara which means something works as an aphrodisiac.
In a similar vein the strength, and bodybuilding communities often float claims that it directly increases testosterone, which could potentially lead to greater strength and fitness. There are also claims surrounding a benefit to male fertility. Including more direct claims that it is able to boost the hormone Testosterone.
One of the most common claims regarding Ashwagandha is that it helps reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol, as well as the feelings of anxiety and depression, resulting in an overall improved feeling of well being and new positivity towards life.
In 2008 a clinical trial was conducted to address exactly this question.
They divided the participants into 4 groups, the placebo group which would consume a pill without ashwagandha in it, one group which would consume one daily dose of 125 mg of ashwagandha root powder, one group would consume 250 mg each day , and the last group would take 500mg of the root powder each day.
This way they could see if Ashwagandha would truly have the desired effect on the participants.
In the lowest dose group by day 30 their average total score dropped by 39.5%, and by day 60 it had dropped by 62.2% compared to the placebo group which saw no significant change at all.
While the questionnaires provided evidence of an effect, the researchers also measured biological changes, at the start of the study they took baseline levels of several hormones, including Cortisol, DHEAS, and C-Reactive Protein to name a few, what happened after the 60 days to these levels provides a strong clue as to how Ashwagandha is exerting its powerful effects,
Science is still figuring out exactly how Ashwagandha is able to do this, but a study on rat brains has demonstrated that consumption of Ashwagandha is able to boost the bodies natural antioxidant defenses, showing increases in levels of glutathione peroxidise, superoxide dismutase and catalase.
Through reducing neuroinflammation and thereby baseline levels of immune and stress hormones, it would make sense that the brain would also be less sensitive to stressful events through day to day life
Studies have shown decreases in blood pressure, and heart rate, as well as increases in social functioning and motivation.
Since Oxidative Stress is also a component of aging and many degenerative diseases, like arthritis and parkinson's, the traditional beliefs about improving life expectancy could have some actual merit.
While it’s beyond the scope of this video, I should also mention there has even been study into the cancer fighting abilities of some of the active chemicals in Ashwagandha.
Now there’s one major category which we haven’t touched on yet. These would be the claims regarding boosts in Testosterone, Muscle Size, Strength, and male fertility.
In 2015 a study was published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, to take on the long standing claims of Ashwagandha boosting strength.
Compared to the placebo group, the group consuming the Ashwagandha gained significantly more strength.
While the placebo group packed an average of 26.4 kg onto their bench press over the two months, the group consuming Ashwagandha added an average of 46.0 kg. A similar difference was also seen on the leg extension. Additionally, the Ashwagandha group also gained a bit more muscle size than the placebo group did.
In terms of fertility benefits, studies on infertile men have found improvements in sperm health and quality. This coincides with both reductions in markers of oxidative stress in the testicals, and improvements in reproductive hormone levels.

My mom passed away a few months back, I was heartbroken beyond explanation. I had haunting dreams, I cried all the time, stopped having food, used to keep talking to myself, I had a mental breakdown & I was sure that I was gonna commit suicide. Ashwagandha + Gotu Kola (a powerful nootropic) + Oil (since they're both fat soluble) , this ayurvedic combination changed my thoughts, inside out. My liver has repaired, my lipid profile has got under control. I still cry with the memories of my mother, obviously, nothing can displace the sorrow I suffer within but Ashwagandha has helped me with coping the exorbitant dreadful conditions that I was living with ! God bless the souls of the departed and give strength to the ones who are left behind with sorrows as it's the worst agony ever - to lose your beloved.

@@jdc4316 Well, I would rather say that never consume anything for a prolonged period. Because, at a certain point the body gets into homeostasis and gets adapted to the habits and gets into a plateau. Secondly, the excretion of all these compounds in it need the NRF2 pathway and obviously stress on the liver ad well. It's best to supplement them for a few months maybe 2 or 4 and then stop it for a few days or weeks and then have it. Always do that under medical supervision as well. Some people can even digest heavy doses while others can't even in milligrams. Every medicine is good for some , bad for some.

I'm not even kidding, Ashwaganda, along with passion flower and Kava, is the only thing that helped me get off of Heroin, Meth, cigarettes, and live mostly sober ( although occasionally weed if offered at a party). I'm thankful for natural meds, and try to spread the word as much as possible. If you have issues with addiction, Depression, PTSD, this is worth a shot.

I can attest to the power of Ashwagandha! I have been taking it for a month now, along with a healthy diet and a regular exercise routine - while taking ashwagandha something extraordinary happened. I have always suffered from social anxiety, the type to break eye contact almost instantly, but since taking it and allowing it to take effect my 'socialness' and assertiveness has definitely increased, and I don't break eye contact! could be placebo, could be gym and a healthy diet - but I have done gym and a healthy diet before and never felt so confident - but now I am taking ashwagandha alongside, it seems like a nice 'boost'.

@La Vérité I used Bioglan brand initially. I took 4 a day to begin with (2 morning, 2 night) then decreased that to 2 a day after 2 weeks. Then when I finished 2 bottles of that (they last awhile) I swapped to a brand that is certified to be using the root of the ashwagandha plant and its extracts in quantifiable amounts, that brand is ' Caruso's ' - which I take 1 a day. As for diet, that's pretty detailed and complex, I just make sure to get plenty of vegetables, protein and fats to support an active lifestyle. I just portion it on what feela right, I dont calorie count, and I keep an eye on my weight. I've never gained or lost weight with the way I eat so I assume it's pretty balanced. I'm not a medical professional or nutritionist so I cant really give advice in that field. You just need to try eat vegetables of differing sorts (for me that's things like Kale, Sweet Potato, Asparagus, Brocolli, Bell peppers, among others which I rotate through) and protein/fats - which I get from things like eggs, greek yogurt, avocado, bacon, chicken, salmon and mince meat. You dont need to be afraid of fat, the food industry has really hijacked fat and made it appear to be bad when it's really essential. Even saturated fats are fine so long as you're not over doing it, and man I eat quite an amount of saturated fat (love bacon and mince meat dishes). It's all something you have to figure out the balance for, for yourself. Only big recommendation I can make is, really make sure you get in a big plate of veggies a day - that's how I do it. I dont have vegies as side dishes, I just sit down and eat a plate of vegetables as a main dish at some point in the day (I have some vegetables in other dishes, but they're not like side. Eg. Tomatoes and Onions in spaghetti bolognese or something).

I am very impressed by this video. This is my definition of good content. It shows empathy, by taking into account different groups of people (interested in causal links; just intered in benefits). It visually and verbally demonstrates with clarity how things come together and I am just EURHORIC about this video. JUST LOVING IT! One aspect that was not covered though, was if there is any possibility of developing dependency. I'd be interested in that. Still loving it though. SOK out.

I’ve completely changed my diet since the quarantine. Making sure I get at least 100% DV of vitamins and incorporating Maca powder (to replace caffeine), Ashwagangha (800mg) and are least 8oz. Of bone broth daily. I still take in about 150mg of caffeine, but I’ve never felt better. I no longer have stomach pain and have an overall better mood throughout the day. I was put on a lot of anti-depressants as a child and they never helped. I was severely depressed off an on for the last 15 years. And this change has occurred after only two weeks! I can’t imagine how I’ll feel after 60 days. I can’t stress enough how much people should try this. Not only do I feel better, but the overall cost is far less than the constant taco binges.

Ashwagandha is great! When ever I feel overly stressed, mostly physical I take round 800mg twice per day. A day or two later I feel much better and my confidence is way up! I also recover faster and get better sleep quality. The only down side for ME.. is that I get easily irritated and aggressive the first week as it clearly boost testosterone but it goes away the longer I use it.
