Proof that workers (which in our modern society refers to WAGE EARNERS) cannot ever stop fighting for their rights, and need to unionize.

@@poggybiscuit862 Because it means the working class is becoming political and that is when change happens. The last time the UK had political working-class companies built homes, workers had good pension schemes and apprenticeships were common. The 90% of people can't be apart of the 10% wealthiest people but the 90% when organised can ensure that the 10% who own 95% of the wealth put in their fair share by spending it within the economy instead of hoarding it by buying up assets (like houses) or taking it overseas. We need wealth to circulate but the rich don't do that without challenge, since 2008 the GDP of the UK grew but wages didn't, which means we're making more and not circulating it within the population. Because this wealth isn't in circulation the government can't raise taxes to tackle a crisis and so they cut vital services and postpone wage raises, an incompetent government is one that is rich, disconnected from real issues and has no pressure from working people to do the right thing. We need to make them do the right thing.

One of my friends left academia recently, leaving behind a career that had taken 20 years to build, because the level of over-management was intolerable. My sister is working part time as a teacher because of the same thing. Both of these people have a passion and talent for their vocation that is unmatched. But it's a passion and talent for their _vocation_, not for the absurd workload demanded to support the needs of middle-management, most of which does not improve the primary outcome of student success, or valuable research. Teachers want to teach; they _know_ how to teach. But they operate in an environment where they are treated as though they have no clue what they're doing. It's not just pay- it's dignity. We should also mention this crazy publish-or-perish thing that's steadily worsened over the last decade. There's no space any more to do deep thinking that may not pay off for several years, yet so much of human progress has resulted from people being stuck on the same problem for a long time until they figure it out.

One major problem with these kinds of strikes is that they disrupt the consumer: student, commuter etc, but not the corporation: university, transport company. The corporations are always bailed out and paid while also not having to pay those on strike. Realistically, they end up better off financially. Government needs to support workers and make the corporations really feel the strikes.
@Gitskreig
@Gitskreig Год назад
Problem is, if the government were actually on the side of workers there wouldn't be strikes. Strikes are the end result of mismanagement and neglect and when it comes to the public sector, that mismanagement and neglect is that of the government. And when it is a Tory government like the current one, it is also deliberate.

What's the alternative, standard of living is going down year after year. The current economy does not work. It creates more billionaires and more food banks. More billionaires = more poor people. This has become strikingly obvious. Wealth for the population is being destroyed not created.

They´re saying they can´t have a "normal" life (surely what the conservatives are all for?) because of the precariousness of their jobs. It´s not infinite money, you berk, it´s a fair wage for fair working hours and conditions.

How very enlightening. Tell us your alternative to higher education and the massive benefit economically and socially that it produces? I'm all ears.
