one time i heard someone say: if you ask a cis person why they are their gender, their answer/reason will most of the time relate or circle back to their sex or the fact that they were born as that gender. when you ask someone who is trans, nonbinary, or whos gender identity does not entirely match with what they were born as, their reasoning goes way more in depth and will relate to things like feelings, surroundings, their history, or maybe even trauma.

My sibling came out as nonbinary a few years ago, and us having an almost/entirely straight/cis extended family, we didn't really know what to expect with their reactions. Surprisingly, our whole (huge) extended family respects their pronouns and chosen name and tries their best not to accidentally misgender or deadname my sibling. As a closeted non-binary person, I have met a couple people saying why non-binary people even exist and how the non-binary community is just ‘a trend’, leaving out the extreme body dysphoria, denial and confusion. Like, can’t people just be people? And also, about the ‘trend’ thing, it’s obviously not true. Non-binary people have existed for as long as people have existed. To be honest, I have been in a state of denial and shock for such a while now and everybody has been very supportive and I hope that you find this acceptance and friends in your life! Thank you for reading!

I once had a conversation with a very straight/cis friend of mine who was trying to understand my experience. I spoke about my gender fluidity and how I’d honestly be happy with any pronouns as long as it wasn’t just she/her all the damn time. A couple times after that, when referring to me in conversation, he referenced me as she, they and he in one sentence and it made me feel so happy and excited. Right now she likes boys because she sees herself as a boy - that's part of her delusion. But before she saw herself as a guy, when she still saw herself as a girl, she was obviously attracted to women. And she would also be attracted to women again if she "detransitioned". Why? Cos she's gay, ie. Lesbian

I'm genderfluid so my pronouns change quite often. Because of this, I usually just introduce myself with they/them pronouns as they have yet to cause me any dysphoria and it's easier than just constantly changing them on people. That being said, I do still have preferences. For example, I am currently most comfortable with she/they pronouns, and I especially love it when people switch pronouns mid-sentence. It feels so incredibly validating and it's a breath of fresh air from the people who just stick to one of the several sets given. Bonus points if they switch up honorifics too.

These sort of videos are always fascinating. I'm Finnish, and grew up speaking Finnish, and we got no gendered pronouns here. Hell, you may not even be referred to as a person if you're decent enough. In official Finnish, you got no gender but people aknowledge you as a living being, but everyone speaks spoken Finnish here, in which case you just automatically get referred as "it".

My relationship with gender is so funny because my parents didn't raise me in a "gendered" way, like I could play with whatever I want, wear whatever I want etc and because I have ADHD I didn't pay attention in school when they were teaching us that there were 2 genders or whatever lmao so i never thought about it. People called me a tomboy but that's wasn't a label I really identified with even if it probably was the closest description from the outside lol, I was just me- I just happened to prefer more 'boy' stuff to 'girl' stuff. I wasn't even aware of gender as a concept until I hit my teens and puberty and I felt dysphoric lmao (they did at least teach us the difference between sex and gender in secondary school though, it really shocks me the amount of grown adults who don't know that). Now as an adult I def feel more 'masculine' than 'feminine', whatever the hell those things even are, I don't identify with so-called womanhood at all and have never felt like a woman or a girl, because I'm not one. I consider my gender (or lack thereof?) one of the most "pure" things about me because I was so detached from the performative aspects of gender growing up so it just formed organically for the most part. In the wise words of The Spongebob movie "you are who you are", and this is who I am lmao, fck everything else.

He said "Isn't that boys turning into girls and girls turning into boys?". After saying yes, he said "Yeah, it's cool. I support that." 52 here, so older generation I guess, Gen X. I used to be pretty bad with trans issues, I didn't understand it so I didn't accept it. Then I realized my acceptance didn't require my understanding. I accept lots of things I don't understand. Now I've gotten to the point where I have a friend who came out to me, as a trans woman, before she told anyone outside of her medical providers. I think that is a huge honor. Recently I've been having fun educating people who insist that They Them is plural. I point out that the word has been used to identify people whose gender is either unknown or irrelevant. And that it has been used like that since Chaucer.

This one one of the realizations that really helped me begin to understand more about gender. My own understanding of my gender was not super clear to me and I always had an “f-this” attitude towards societal gender roles. That made it hard for me at first, to open my mind up to the idea of someone feeling assured and confident in what gender they were. Once I understood that other people can have a strong sense of their gender identity, I realized that even though I don’t really know what that feels like, it doesn’t mean it’s not possible. I think that realization that other people have different feelings than us, but we don’t need to know all the details to accept them, is so important. It seems so fundamental to let go and relax, in order to open the door to others. I am so glad to see this comment and I’m happy that y’all have come to that realization. It is super cool and it reinforces that the acceptance of not understanding, is so so important.

@Jenna Grace I'm a bisexual male I totally get the not understanding how others feel thing. Like I don't understand how someone can see an attractive person, of any gender, and not be attracted to them. Just like non multisexuals have a hard time understanding how we work. And, similarly, I feel that pansexuals feel attraction in a different why than bisexuals. They tend to claim gender doesn't play a role. For ne it does, I am just attracted to all genders but that gender is important.

There was a joke around the school when I was 7 where people would say gay and I didn't understand it, but when it was explained to me what being gay was, I just though 'cool' and didn't question it. When I was 11 and learned what being trans was, it took me 2 seconds to understand it , while the rest of my family, including my younger siblings, took weeks to understand. My brother who's only 3 years older than me is very transphobic and homophobic, not knowing he has a gay, trans younger brother. It got to a point where it was just so emotionally draining that I decided to just not care. i forced myself to not care about a label and I have felt at lot more at peace with my identity. so now I don't use any specific pronouns and don't label my gender or sexuality and I have found life so much easier. anyways :)

So I identify as nonbinary, I use they/them pronouns. I use the name “Cedar”. I can agree I LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! When a non-binary person uses names like bug, twig, fern, etc. because it makes me feel better about using the name cedar. Ty!

Genderfluid/bi over here who takes any pronouns! (He/They/She in that order of preference!) I am most comfortable with he/they, typically, but since I am, irl, a female, most people automatically use she/her pronouns with me, which doesn't really upset me at all. They are low on the preference list, but I'm not going to kill you, haha! For those who aren't sure what to call me, they usually use they/them, which is also totally fine! I prefer these above she/her, as I feel more comfortable taking they/them, since I considered myself nonbinary for a while. Consider them comfort/safe pronouns! Lastly, referring to me as he/him will make me jump for joy, bear hug you, and love you forever, since I've felt most comfortable with these pronouns for a while now, and they give me that warm fuzzy feeling inside. I don't really know how to explain it, but I hope that helps!!

All of these comments of people saying they like when people change pronouns mid-sentence is 1. making me very happy that y'all are getting validated, and 2. making me confront a lot of internalized enbyphobia about multiple pronoun usage, and realizing that I'd probably enjoy being referred to that way. I'm only out to a few people, but I'm hoping to come out to more people soon, so hopefully I can get support experimenting with pronouns Thanks y'all!

I totally get people, especially binary trans people, who are like "I'm trying to communicate my gender visually and it sucks when that doesn't work". But, as a transmasc, for me, it's like, if someone calls me "she" without asking, that's how I know I failed. If someone asks me my pronouns, it's not because of me or what I look like, it's because they're the type of person who likes to ask. For me it's like, mostly trans people ask my pronouns, or people I've just come out to. So they're making sure they get it right, which makes me feel great honestly.

I use she/they pronouns and personally I do like when people change between the two in different sentences (though if they use both in one sentence it does confuse me lmao). Also I use both so people can use whatever they’re comfortable with for me:)

I use they/them pronouns, I came out almost three years ago and it's incredible to think about how much my perception of myself has changed. I knew about my pronouns long before I came out and referred to myself as they/them in my head, but hearing people actually call me that was so gratifying.

My favourite thing to do to make it easy for people when I meet them is to go "Hi, nice to meet you! I'm [name], he/him" I think it lets the other person tell me their pronouns without feeling they don't pass or something :)
