Actually, I'm starting to believe this was a marketing move. Here's the argument: - Controversy gets attention (Remember the Gillette ad everybody was talking about? Yeah, this Sonic trailer got a lot of attention for being shitty). - The entire movie could have been finished with the "new" model we see here before the trailer ever came out. They could have animated the "old" weird-looking sonic specifically for the trailer to gain attention. - It worked. A regular sonic movie would have been popular, sure, but it wouldn't have gotten this kind of attention. In my opinion, we can prepare to see a lot more controversial advertisements in the near future. The Internet has changed the nature of advertising; we now live in an attention economy, and whatever can grab your attention is king.
