"Damn it Adé! Shay isn't wrong! Leave the poor man at peace! He's just trying to keep the precursor sites from being used like they have been!" "... Edward? Is that?... You? Why are you defending him?" "I'm not defending The Templars Adé. But I know about Shay's actions before he left the assassins and before he joined the Templars long enough to say that this hunt for a precursor site caused two earthquakes. You should know!" "You don't know what I know!" "I do Adé! The moment Achilles touches that artifact in the precursor site, a quake is going to happen! You have to believe me!" "...Father?" "Son?..." "I thought you were..." "Murdered by two men in 1736? I know well alone of it. Though I'm surprised you're actually a Templar Haytham. And a bit disappointed." "It's not what you think Father. When you died... I met this man... He..." "The man who trained you to become a Templar is the same man who sent those goons after me in 1736, Haytham. Reginald Birch is bad news." "It can't be... Then that means..." "You know it to be true, even though nothing is, Haytham. Why else was your father murdered? Because he was an Assassin. A man of peace and privilege." "If I had known sooner..." "It's not your fault Master Kenway. You like me had terrible luck on the way over to the Templars. I got shot in the back before you all found me in the snow nearly dead." "You were just a child, Son, wasn't your fault. But we need to stop the precursor sites from being found and used. If I've learned assassin history correctly, these things don't hold an Apple of Eden. Because whatever these things have been doing has said to cause total catastrophe. I remember when I once felt the urge as a pirate to dream of selling the observatory to the highest bidder." "But you learned that it wasn't worth it didn't you Captain Kenway?" "Aye, Adé. it was too dangerous to let someone know the dark secrets. I met the Sage you all know as Black Bart. and known first hand that no man such as Roberts should as much as touch that observatory. I stopped him before he could harm more innocents."
I like that ade admits that even though Edward lost his way he still saw him as an ambitious man who at the end of his journey managed to change in a big way
Edward was basically a common nobody who (though not by intention) made his with leave her well-off family to be with him out of love, and I'm fairly certain his obsession with wealth likely began with guilt over Caroline having to live the bare minimum with him. But the more he dreamed big the more he lost sight of what was important, and he wound up going off pirating for riches while his wife died from illness without his knowing... It took losing everybody else he loved right before his eyes before he finally realized what the people he lost meant to him, and he screwed his head back on straight. It was a damned good character arc, and in a way illustrated well the end of reckless freedom that Haytham was preaching as a templar in the game before. Though usually there isn't such a positive conclusion to it all, ofc...
If you don't think Eivor, King Aelfred, Basim, Sigurd, Barid, Ciara and others aren't great characters, then you're either blind, deaf, daft, or haven't played the games (you might be all 4 but that would be a reach, just like saying that there aren't great stories and characters in the recent games).
@@dubstrap6095 hell to the no, the story and lore is immaculate, as is the gameplay. Miss me with that AC1 rigidity and boring ass story that needs the sequels to even exist.
I really liked how Rogue strongly linked together AC3, AC4, AND AC Unity. For a loosely linked anthology series, it’s really interesting to know that Edward’s decision to join the Assassins eventually resulted in events like Shay decimating the American assassins, Connor helping George Washington found the USA, Elise’s death, and Desmond’s sacrifice
"Do not speak ill of your father, boy" Brought me back when we first met adewale and i played his DLC Freedom Cry his respect for Edward as a man was inmense and their friendship was remarkable.
Even though they had a little falling out one time, in the end he has immense deep respect for Edward as he was the man who freed him and served with him
The best part about their friendship to me was that, while in todays world your best friend will talk shit about you all day long but you tolerate it because they encourage you in doing fun but very stupid shit, Ade gave Edward a peace of his mind and was like “I can’t hang out with you if you’re going to be a moron. These assassins are about something good and I’d rather live my life with them than watch you throw yours away. Now that being said, we good?” Like he never held back and always encouraged Edward to be the best man he could be. And being held to that standard, Edward succeeded.
Unpopular opinion: the Kenway Trilogy is absolutely fucking great maybe one step beneath the Ezio trilogy but those six games are miles ahead of anything else in the franchise.
*Popular opinion. The new games are nowhere near what they used to be, especially story wise. The Ezio Trilogy, Kenway Saga and the modern day story with Desmond were amazing. Kinda sad to see what the franchise has become compared to how it once was
I love Adewale here, “do not speak ill of your father boy!” While Haytham is a full adult not to mention a Templar Grand Master, “boy” is still the only way to refer to him due to his disrespect.
@@silverblade357 Also Edward encouraged Haytham to think for himself and Birch basically ended up as his dad, not to mention Haytham was never an assassin
Edward would’ve been disgusted with the way the colonial assassins were operating. And if Edward was still alive during this then Haythem wouldn’t have been a Templar
The Colonial Assassins under Achilles were basically a domestic terrorist organization... the making of chemical weapons to use on civilians, using blood thirsty killers as servants and messing with artifacts which have the potential to cause devastating natural disasters. Chevalier and Kesegowaase are excellent examples of the kind of men whom Edward and Ezio would despise.
@@Ozzie_MandiasExcept the Templars weren’t much better. William Johnston was willing to kill Native American tribal leaders to get what he wants and Charles Lee would’ve exterminated Connors entire tribe if he had his own way.
I highly recommend reading AC Forsaken. That book cleared up so much about Haytham and it just made me ball my eyes out. One of my favourite characters without a doubt.
@@nietzschemia no one cares for Connor he’s my favorite assassin though. You actually see a person underneath the robes if you complete the game fully and not just the story mode
@@cptfreeman8966 Connor's dull and naive. He does have qualities I respect - he's really strong and honorable. But his father and grandfather are far more interesting and have better stories imo.
@@nietzschemia to be fair, he was just a traumatized boy who was far from civilization and only had achilles to learn from. Other protagonists had many helps to made them grow as a person.

LOWLAND AWAAYY--* Conner: It seems his tongue has tasted sour grapes. Haytham: *This* is why the Templars can never be-- Edward: LET'S HAVE ANOTHER SONG, LADS!
Edward wouldn’t necessarily argue, he’d be the mediator. Keeping it from escalating because he’s a pilot he doesn’t give a crap about the Templar or Assassins 😅
I honestly think Edward would’ve been proud of Haytham in a way, just like how Haytham felt about Connor in his dying moments. All three men showed absolute dedication to their creeds, even when it put their lives at risk, Haytham was no exception, he was the norm of the Kenway men, just like his grandfather and son.
@@sonicfan2403 Oh without a doubt, but at least he'd be proud that his son committed to something so strongly his entire life. Edward spends 90% of Black Flag running away from his calling as an assassin.
That’s the interesting thing. As Haytham said it, he’s his own man, which is exactly what Edward taught him. He never taught Haytham to be an assassin, just to find his own path.
So the American people would've lost the revolution without Connor's help. That would mean the french nobility would've stayed in power for a bit longer. No french revolution. If unity didn't happen then the assassin's and Templars would've found some peace.
It would've been cooler if there was a cut scene with Shay and Adewalé fighting. Only for Ade to come out on top (despite his age). Then Haytham would come in. They start fighting while Adewalé talks about Edward. Eventually Haytham would win and with Adewalé's last breath he tells Haytham something deep about his father. It's so effecting that It looks like Haytham has a look of doubt or regret about his path for a few moments before Shay comes in and snaps him out of it.
That WOULD have been a more fitting end for Ade. Got chills on the last part. I’m more ambivalent about Haytham than any other AC character. I always wished he’d shown more self-doubt and inner conflict because of his father’s legacy. Haytham’s character is far more complex and interesting than Shay’s in my opinion. Or Connor’s for that matter.
@@nietzschemia That would've been sick. Haytham is definitely the most interesting character outside of the main characters. 1. His father was an assassin. 2. He didn't kill Reginald Burch when he found out. 3. He was ready to kill his son the first time he encounter him. 4. He let his son kill him. And so on...
@@nietzschemia in AC III between Haytham's sequence and meeting them as Connor, all the Templars changed to show their worst traits. Lee was rageful and narcissistic, church and hickey were greedy, Johnson had good intentions but ends justify the means, and finally Haytham simply became controlling ruthless. But if I had taken out an entire brotherhood, I'd get cocky too
Reginald killed Edward and he lied to Haytham to think the Assassins had betrayed his father so he could join the Templars, later Haytham finds out the truth and kills Reginald for lying.
@@hectorserna0610 I feel like he believed in obtaining peace through order and the templars were the only way for him to achieve that. He wanted to shape the world for the better rather than allowing civilisation to dictate its own course
I was hoping Ubisoft would explore more Templar games with different mechanics. I really liked this change of pace from the typical "formula" the devs have been using.
Yeah it's too bad the mechanics are the same, it would be awesome if Ubisoft actually emphasized the differences between how the Assassins and Templars operate
rogue dont feel like a templar game...you are more like a vigilante... We want a templar creed game...where you play as a real templar...it would be really amazing...and I wish we could get a beard/hair growth system and outfit shops like in typical open world games
Why is everyone saying that Adewale despised Edward? They were effectively brothers, yes they had a falling out; even then there was mutual respect and admiration for one another. Yes he was upset with Edward at the Assassins hideout for leading the Spanish there, Edward makes up for it
@@gendengraven5049 No I just watched the mission man, it definitely was a Spanish assault! However the Captain in charge of the invasion was indeed British, so depending on how you look at it you could say the British spearheaded the assault!
It's confusing that people came to that conclusion. They have a falling out because Edward only cared about plunder while Ade comes into his own higher Philo. He still most likely helped in some capacity to get Edward out of prison, returned his ship to him that he only took because eds actions almost got them all killed and asks him to join the assassins because he still deeply respects him. There really is no negative feelings between the two by the end and its undoubtable that after all they did together taht they were one anothers closest friend. Even the frustration ade gives in later life about how Edward was only interested in plunder is a minor point to his deep affection for his time with Edward which he said he would never trade for anything and he swam down into the ocean to keep the jackdaw head as a souvenir of their time together.
@@yodabaki970 My points exactly! As I said they viewed each other as friends, brothers, confidants, there was never any real stigma between them. Adé was annoyed because he saw the good in Kenway, who he himself was reluctant to release
Hated Haytham except for his humour , but when i read the book, his past was ... very traumatic and full of betreyal it was only at the end of his life that he realized all the lies and in AC3 you can see him, starts to believe in the creed fighting along side Connor but he died white the same beliefs of a templar.
He was brought into the templar order with a lie but believed in their ideals and ways nontheless so even when he learned the truth about Edward he wouldn't switch sides
@@paulghencea9037 yeah,he killed birch for what he had done to Edward and his sister but even after learning the truth and killing him he stayed with the templars nontheless because he believed in their ideals
Rogue still one of my favorites. There will never be another game like it. Don't know what Ubisoft is thinking by throwing all their characters away so soon. Oh well. To the good times.
@@Artok444 I think you'd be surprised. The Assassins were actual bad guys in this game. I would say the death of Adewale is the only unwanted one, but everyone else seemed justified. One of the most interesting stories written in the series
@Artok444 If you support the colonial branch of the brotherhood, before Connort came, then, you're an idiot for wanting to side with an arrogant fuck like Achille. Minus Adewale.
Why do people say Adewale "despised" Edward? He never despised him, he was disappointed in him that Edward was selfish and sought riches so they went their separate ways. When Edward did the right thing and committed to right his wrongs and become a Assassin, Adewale was proud of him.
0:46 I had a tough time with this part of the game. After seeing the pivotal role Adéwalé played in Black Flag and Freedom Cry, it felt unethical to Kill Adéwalé. You can even sense the the anguish on Patrick's face after he kills Adéwalé. I shared that same sentiment with Patrick because I felt stuck between a rock and a hard place. Should I kill Adéwalé? Should I let him survive because I just played the entire game Freedom Cry as Adéwalé? Ubisoft completely flips the script on you in this game. For the longest time, the Templars were villains, and Assassins were heroes. In Rogue, it truly felt like there was this gray area that was explored. Maybe just maybe there is some good with certain Templars and evil with certain Assassins. There is no one side that is immaculate. Requiescat In Pace 👍
I mean when you're playing "numbskull" in present day and collect the tablets that show some of oten bergs inspirations some of them were assassins that went corrupt
Things always will be black and white if you just see one side of the war. It's just like Skyrim, no matter who you choose everyone will loose in the end.

he would be ashamed for what you have become. really? i didn't know my father ever had sense of shame. badass quotes been delivered between haytham and adewale
I’d humor a retcon, maybe when Shay was a young apprentice he foolishly got a man killed, that man being Edward, which then leaves Haytham orphaned and groomed by Birch to be a Templar. Shay is guilt ridden and decides to leave especially seeing how “corrupt” the Assassins have become, game carries on as the original, now with a new potential plot point between Haytham and Shay.
The Kenway Saga was the series' peak for me. Shame Ubisoft didn't end it with a proper finally. Also, just remembered how disappointed I was when Unity wasn't about Connor. I mean, Arno's cool, but his narrative overall felt lackluster compared to the games before and Rouge.
The 17th/18th Century Americas Saga was pretty dope honestly. Cool and interesting characters such as the ones in this game, the Kenways, Aveline, basically the entire cast of 4, all with their own and interconnecting storylines weaving across and shaping the early Americas
Apparently AC Rogue was gonna be about Haytham but they already made a book about haytham’s life (AC Forsaken) so they decided to make a new character. Shay.
This is good stuff. Crazy how a secret war between Assassins and Templars can even split family apart. Connor and Haytham had no desire to kill one another but were forced to fight because of their different ideals in achieving peace. And then there was Haytham killing his own Grand Master out of vengeance for Birch killing Haytham's Assassin father Edward and selling his sister to Turkish slavers. Yet Haytham still sided with the Templars after all that.
Assassin or Templar, Order or Hidden Ones... They are both problematic, and need to work together to sort the world out. Neither is true good, or evil. Balance is needed.
Did you know that Haytham Kenway is the main character in the Kenway saga because he appears in the Assassin's Creed trilogy, 3, Black Flag and Rogue. same as Ezio Auditore.
Could've been but Connor was indeed the most reformed one. He had no knowledge of politics yet he believed in his true instincts. Unlike Edward who was after money and Haytham who was after the Precursor site , Connor Only Fought for Freedom and Peace. Never had his personal emotions be the reason of his decisions. Truly A Great Man!
the only good assassin you kill in rogue was adewale.... the other assassin you killed was an indian, a pirate, a woman, and another man... literally 0 significance to the assassin's creed franchise... unless you have a loose definition of "best assassins"
If Edward had lived (besides the obvious of Haytham being raised as an Assassin) I feel like the Colonial Brotherhood wouldn’t have been nearly as corrupt. He probably would’ve immediately defended Shay, being one of the only Assassins at that point who lived to see how dangerous the Precursor technology was.
The Kenways shed such a bright light to the grey-ness of this conflict. The Assassins really did fuck up in the Americas, and these cast of characters are so dynamic, and the Templar angle with rogue really shed a lot of light on it.
"Blessing or curse, I am my own man." I think that's probably what Haytham respected most about Connor, and knowing he would probably be the only one to survive him, held back his blade.
Replaying AC rogue on my series X at 4k 60 and holy fuck i love it. The combat both Shay and naval, the world, being a Templar, all the characters that are referenced, the ending which connects Unity to the rest of the games, etc. Such an underrated game
Edward truly was good man and a wonderful father to Haytham Adewale was right he would be ashamed of what Haytham have become Adewale was Edwards best friend that Was one of the greatest friendships of all time
Haytham would’ve become an assassin if Edward had told him about the templars and the assassins. He actually didn’t find out Edward was an assassin until he had already become a templar. He was taught the skills of an assassin but was groomed to have the morals of a templar.
These games are so great to go back and play chronologically now that they’re all out. I did a playthrough of 4, then Freedom Cry, then the Haythem prologue of 3, then most of Rogue, then the rest of 3, then Liberation bc I didn’t know where exactly to play it during 3, and then finally the end of Rogue, which then lead to my Unity playthrough.
Adewale is like Master Gibbs from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Both were quartermasters and deeply loyal and devoted to their respective captains of the ships.

@@wolfric951 misunderstanding. i confirmed what you said haytham killed reginald for hiding the truth about his father death. it all explained on Assassin's Creed Forsaken Book
I love how Haytham was always like "feelings are for pussies", but the only reason he died is he had a genuine fatherly love to his son he barely even knew
Haytham deep down was always emotional and remember his father's teaching about thinking for himself first. All of his personality that is stoic and cold are just to maintain his image as templar grandmaster, hell the first thing he do after finding out who betrayed his family was to hunt him and avenge his father so ofc he got some soft spot for connor.
One thing that pissed me of about this game is that they just switched the codes of the assassins and the tempelars around to fit the storytelling. Adewale would never have supported an organization that killed innocents
The problem is, is that Adewale was likely stuck in between the BS Achilles pulled when he allied with the French, the same people Adewale fought back at Freedom Cry. And I don't think he fully knew what Achilles and his Brotherhood were doing (Remember, he was mostly operating at the Caribbean by that time), and yes he wouldn't have aided Achilles at the first place because on how they operate
Rogue was such a good game very short but fun, the only game where I felt I didn't want to do any side quest that's a bad thing, the fall of Lisbon was supposed to feel impactful but it was a meh we didn't even get to explore it aside from it getting destroyed. you didn't even get to know or befriend the assassins before hunting them down that was a miss opportunity to make their deaths sad or memorable, and when you get to fight them it was stupidly easy, specially adewale just sneak up behind him and the legendary assassin is dead just like that. Great game, good story, phenomenal voice acting, very pretty environment from the Atlantic to Newyork, a lot of miss opurtunities in the story that would've made it so much better (we couldve ended up with hope and nothing would've changed 👉👈). Fun playing as a templarand setting the stage for ac unity. 6/10
I think Haytham respected and loved Edward but like he said to Ade, he is his own man. Edward chose his path to become an assassin while Haytham chose his path. Edward would probably be proud of his son.
