Objectives
Stop asthma symptoms such as wheezing and coughing
• Reduce stress levels
• Calm breathing during an anxiety or panic attack
• Open up the airways
• Get more oxygen to your cells
• Gently reduce breathing volume
Prepare
• Sit up straight in a comfortable position.
Method
• Take a normal breath in through your nose and out through your nose.
• Pinch your nose to hold your breath for up to 5 seconds.
• Count 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
• Let go of your nose and breathe normally through it for 10 seconds.
• After a normal exhalation, pinch your nose to hold your breath.
• Count, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
• Let go of your nose and breathe normally through it.
Recover and Repeat
• Continue the exercise for 5 minutes.
• When used as an emergency exercise, you can repeat for as long as symptoms are present.
Warning
• This exercise is suitable for everyone.
• If you find it impossible to breathe through your nose, clear your nose using the nose unblocking exercise first. For more help, speak to your medical doctor or find a certified Breathing Instructor.
More Guidance
• This is an emergency exercise. It is very hard to slow your breathing during an anxiety or panic attack. Instead, calm it using this exercise.
• Do not try to hold your breath for longer than 5 seconds. To keep your breathing stable, your breath hold should be no longer than half your BOLT score at that time.
• Between the breath holds, breathe low and slow, if possible.

Wow. This just worked! Thank you so much! The more you can’t breathe, the scarier it gets. The scarier it gets, the more you can’t get breath. This is literally a life saver. Thank you!!!

Yep! Wish I had known this when I was having an attack and didn’t have my inhaler on me 😅 My friend’s mom rushed me home so i could grab my inhaler and i realized after that most of my struggling to breathe was anxiety induced

I've just been diagnosed with asthma and I'm not getting much support. I came on YT as I felt desperate for help (I do have inhalers) and came across this video. All I can say is thank you so much! You have no idea how helpful this is, and how grateful I am.

This breathing exercise will be a great tool to have in your back pocket @TR0se If you want to learn more about controlling your asthma, our sister brand Buteyko Clinic has an online self study course (buteykoclinic.com/buteyko-clinic-online-courses/) and an online Zoom course (buteykoclinic.com/clinic-with-patrick-mckeown/) run by Patrick McKeown that could be of great help to you. Thank you for commenting.

Hi. I have noticed that the length of my breath is quite long. I had to pause the video because I didn't keep up. Same in yoga and pilates classes. Should I try to learn to breath more frequently? I also feel like I can't breath properly when exercising and I easily end up using secondary breathing muscles such as neck muscles. My neck is always stiff after exercise. Should I just endure the feeling of suffocation? And why do I feel like I had an air bubble in my throat aften doing this breathing exercise?

You should be breathing in and out approximately 120 times per minute. Try to train yourself to breathe this frequently 🙏

A normal breathing rate for an adult at rest is 12 to 20 breaths per minute.

Do you have to “pinch” your nose? Can you just stop the airflow just by holding your breath

Ofc

Hi Ace. You can hold the breath without pinching the nose if you're in public for example. The breath holds are much more effective while pinching the nose to make sure no air gets out. Regards, Darren

Hi Patrick, what exercises do you recommend for recovering from bronchitis, and strengthening lungs again? I live in a polluted city so my lungs tend to get irritated from time to time

What would you recommend for blocked sinuses (left/right side of nose) is shifting from blocked to unblocked.

Hi Archa. It's natural for one nostril to swell and swap sides. Research indicates that this nasal cycle happens every 90 minutes or so. Practice reduced breathing and the nose unblocking exercise a couple of times per day. Hello Patrick, I’m not sure if you read these comments or not. My brother was exposed some years ago to asbestos, when he worked for the council. And a few years ago it resurfaced, when his doctor told him he has asbestos in his lungs, diagnosing him with plural plaque. But during Covid, in the lockdowns my brother got Covid twice, and nobody was helping him, leaving him to deteriorate further, and now he has plural thickening in his lungs, and will soon undergo chemotherapy. My brother is 60 years of age, and has always eaten healthy, training at the gym. Over the last few days he seems a little defeated about getting better, after reading many articles on his condition about the likelihood of making a full recovery... Do you know if a Buteyko practitioner can help him with his condition? And could Buteyko, under guidance with his doctor be used in conjunction with chemotherapy, when it starts. Thank you??? 🙏🏻

Hi L G. Thanks for your comment. Sorry to hear about your brother. We do offer training, some exercises could help clear his airways and shift mucus from the lungs, possibly asbestos too. The exercises could also shift his state of mind. Will message you privately. Thanks for your message. Regards, Darren
