Hi VauxRez. I've got a 2007 Saab 9-3 with the Z18XE engine in, and its oil consumption has increased significantly recently. There's also a ticking sound, rattling almost, which seems to change when I release the oil filler cap.. How is the crank ventilation on this engine constructed?

Hi Fredrik, sounds like your breather system may well be blocked, when you pull the dipstick out with the engine running, is there some resistance and does the engine note change? I believe the breather system on the 1.8 engine it similar to the 1.6 in that its part of the cam cover, you can't really clean it out so its best to buy a new cover Yours being the XE engine has hydraulic cam followers so the ticking could be one of these stuck or being starved of oil, the the XER had solid lifters (as does the 1.6) but has variable valve timing, I have heard that the cam pulleys on these engines can sometimes cause a "tick" but if yours is definitely the XE then this won't be your problem Hope this helps

Hi VauxRez Ive got a 1.6 petrol astra z16xer engine, been having a lot of trouble with it losing power and the engine noise changing, changed every sensor (crank/cam/solenoids)then it just constantly sounded like a diesel and a lot of knocking, so changed the cam phasers and new belt kit but its still the same and error code 1166 for the cam phasers. Im at a loss here pretty sure the timing is correct everthing lines up only thing I can think to do is replaced my already new solenoids with some more new solenoids since they were changed around 3 month befor the adjusters/phasers cud they have broke ? Did a oil flush and new filter n still no change, any ideas/help would be appreciated. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Hi Luke, I haven't worked on the XER engine, mine is the XEP so none of the joys of cam phasers and associated solenoids etc, sounds like you have changed everything I would have, The variable valve timing is controlled with using oil pressure, might be worth checking the oil ways aren't blocked

Do I have to change the ecu kit if I was to put a 1.6 engine in my car that had a 1.4 engine

Hi freddie yes you would need to change the ECU kit, its quite a bit of work so I would consider skipping the 1.6 and going for a 1.8 same amount of work bigger engine

Is there anything else apart from ecu I would need to change such as clocks and squib and ignition.
