So, your Fibre To The Home (FTTH) connection goes beyond gigabit. Is the ASUS AX89X the router for you? Will it perform at optimal speeds? Will we make terrible antenna arachnid jokes?
This video is a review, setup & comparison of the ASUS AX89X vs the Bell Homehub 4000. We're going to compare their Wi-Fi performance, set up the router to work with Bell Gigabit Fibe 1.5 to get FULL 1.5 gigabit download speed on a single device & do a quick review on some features found on this router and if it's the router YOU should buy.
Also, an embarrassing surprise for you all at the end that I clearly don't regret........although I'm typing this sentence right now, so this could be a lie.... 🤷🏾‍♂️

yes, I use the home hub 3000 in my basement alongside an ASUS RT-AX92U tri-band gaming router in the second floor. So we have two access points. it works like a charm. Full coverage and amazing speeds all around the house.

I got HH3000 and took out the SFP got myself a tplink gigabit media converter going into Asus RTac86U with a aimesh node.. I have merlin firmware with different VPN profiles for specific devices, custom DNS server etc on the router.

Thanks a lot!!! I got tired of the performance of the bell hub and I had previously done what you mentioned using the sfp 2.5 with older models, and returned recently to bell like a month ago and now I'm back using my Asus AX11000 to gain better signal wifi.

Great content man, you basically summed up all the amazing points of dealing with ISP's like bell. It's such a shame that they locked out the SFP in the homehub 4000. I stuck with rogers for the time being since it's been such a hard time to get my home wifi equipment working well with bells homehub.

There should be consumer laws to make ISPs be more transparent about how YOUR connection works. Some reps at both Bell and Rogers are very guilty of advising customers not to buy 3rd party equipment. If there was more education about this out there in easy to understand terms, so many calls to support would be mitigated. But alas, here we are.

Just wanted to say thanks. Got myself the AX89X cheap on ebay. Followed your instructions and was able to get 1.6g download and 1.1 upload on a 1.5g bell connection from my PC. Router and transceiver worked great.

Great video! Can you confirm if you've had any issues with the fan? Also, have you been able to check the connection tightness for the 10G Base-T WAN (the middle one with metal jacket)?

For anyone new to this like me this is an excellent video. Just in case you get stuck like I did in the "Manage my wifi" menu you might not see 'Advanced Settings" you actually have to turn off "Whole Home Wi-fi" first, then hit save, then Advanced Settings will show. By default this is enabled (or maybe the technician turned mine one when installing and setting up). I'm struggling because I'm trying to setup my google mesh since my house is pretty big figured a mesh network would help. I'm tired of it so i'm going to switch to the Archer ax90 and give this a try. LOL THE SONG AT THE END

Mine has been solid. What i should buy to enter with 2,5gbps internet in 10gb RJ45 and exit to a PC with 2,5gb ethernet motherboard with a lan cable (i put an adapter on sfp Port)? Can i use a switch which have 10gbps support sfp Port and i link the router with a sfp 10gbps cable?

As long as the switch can accept 10GbE and can also accept 2.5GbE from your motherboard you should be ok. But something to keep in mind. In the video, you notice the CPU usage going pretty high in my testing. So I would avoid adding more connections that go above 1 gigabit to the network if you do your setup. You can attach the switch to the 10GbE port. I don’t think you can attach the 2.5 GbE directly to the ASUS and get that speed as unfortunately, those ports won’t sync to 2.5. But it SHOULD work with a switch, providing that the switch can connect at 10 GbE to the router and 2.5 GbE to your motherboard. It may be worth picking up a 10 GbE card instead of buying a switch (if you don’t have one already that is) If you do decide to try this, I’d be very curious to know how it went. If I get my hands on a 10 GbE & 2.5 GbE switch- I’ll post here my findings. But I don’t see myself getting one anytime soon. Keep us all posted!

Hey! So I tried the Wi-Fi 6E version of this router (The AXE-16000) and found the Wi-Fi 6 performance to be REALLY bad compared to this one (for the $200 CAD increase in its price) it wasn't worth it and I returned it. I love these AX89X routers a LOT.

This is a great video! I’m setting myself up similar to what you’ve done, but running the Asus RT-AC5300 router instead. The router’s wan port supports 1gb speeds. Challenge is my router is only pulling speeds of 93mbps on the internal speed test. Running the router on PPPoE. Any specific settings on the bell HH4000 or the router I should look for to help with speed? As comparison, my AppleTV and my sons gaming computer (both wired to the modem the same way) are pulling 940mbps.

My modem’s internal speed test is completely borked. I’ll get like 600 megabit on the same speedtest server. Hard wiring my computer to my router will get full 8 gigabit (big update since this video, if you haven’t seen the 8 gig review, it’s been up for about a month now) I’d just try speedtest to a machine hardwired to your router and go by that. Router manufacturers are lost when it comes to speed tests in my experience.

Thanks for this video it was really helpful. Is there any way to still access the homehubs or gigahubs login page? I'm using a different router but I'd imagine whatever the setup has to be is similar. Right now in order to make any setting changes I'd have to directly plug into the bell gigahub again as the login ip doens't seem to work otherwise.

So using PPPoE the ASUS router became 192.168.50.1 To get to the Bell page, it should be 192.168.2.1 - that’s been my experience. This way I don’t have to unhook/ re-wire anything

The Homehub 4000 is usually accessed via 192.168.2.1 - the ASUS router is usually accessed through either router.asus.com or the corresponding IP address. Best advice I have for you, unplug the HomeHub from the router, connect your computer directly to the router and try router.asus.com and check the IP of the router *under system status on the right on the main page, click the status tab and scroll to the bottom and you'll see your WAN IP* - on my specific setup, the address is 192.168.50.1 (but this may not be the case for yours) - note that IP address and reconnect the HomeHub 4000. Now, when you reconnect your HomeHub 4000, you may have to reboot it - I've noticed that if I make any changes to the hard-wired connection of the HomeHub 4000, I lose connectivity (hopefully this is ironed out in the HomeHub 4000's firmware soon). Also and this is kind of weird, my method changed since posting this video. Now I used Advanced DMZ as I find PPPoE can't multi-thread the connection without spiking its CPU usage with virtually all consumer routers that support this type of speed. This is fixed by going Advanced DMZ. And also, I recommend updating your modem firmware. ASUS had an issue with throttling 10GbE connections which I helped them address via various correspondence and they rolled the update very recently (I'm on a beta of it currently). We just got Bell Fibe 1.5 gbps and standing beside the modem, my Galaxy S10e only gets like 600 mbps. As soon as I go upstairs, I can only get like 60. I am approx. 2 rooms away and upstairs. I thought this would have been better than what I got. So, in the end, it would be best to get a better wifi router?

Your videos are very informative. I do however have a few questions. I'm using the bell 2.5gb fibre optic plan I recently purchased a netgear nighthawk router I was surprised to learn that bell 4000 hub dosen't have straight bridge option. I followed through your video and I'm wondering why you hooked the ethernet cable to you routers the 10gb port if you don't have a 10gb internet speed plan

There’s no bridge mode but PPPoE works great …… IF your router can run PPPoE connections in a multi thread / multi core situation. (Just because a router is dual or quad core doesn’t mean it can do PPPoE as a multi thread / multi core task). But from using this router for a while now, it’s been amazing and way better than Rogers’ bridge mode. So on this router there isn’t a 2.5 gigabit connection. There’s 1 and 10 gigabit. If you check the channel, there’s a full playlist (including Bell 3 gigabit parts 1 & 2) - I’m getting around 3200 megabit both ways. If I connected via the other ports I’d get 940 (1000 is the limit, but account for network overhead) I plan on running 10 gig clients internally on my network so I can file share at 10 GbE. If you want the maximum speed out of the 1.5, 3 and 8 gig plans, you can’t use the regular ports as they’ll cap you at 1 gigabit. Not to mention, you need to make sure one of your computers can even accept faster than 1 gigabit via its network adapter. This use case is to basically have the ability to access the entire connection on one machine if you were inclined to do so. I do some heavy media workflows for my clients so I always want to push the connection limits to servers on my end. **NOTE** (edit): In Bell 3 gig part 2 I said to use advanced DMZ and avoid PPPoE. That is not in accurate as ASUS addressed the issue in a firmware update. So ignore that part of Bell 3 Gigabit Part 2

@@ryzenforce It's been a thing for years on Bell. It's heavily documented in the Bell forum on dslreports. I want a public IP going to my router, which doesn't happen when you default it to DHCP (same thing happens on Rogers if you don't run bridge mode) - if I do it that way, I'm double NAT'ed - which causes some issues for my work - and even for gaming.

I think the Homehub 4000 is actually decent but a dedicated router with proper channels configured will yield a great result. The key is, finding channels that aren’t congested by using a wifi analyzer tool and then locking your wifi channels to that. Yes you can. You want to put the homehub 4000 in either Advanced DMZ or PPPoE (PPPoE if your router's processor can handle the PPPoE overhead, be warned a lot of routers can't do it) That being said, advanced DMZ seems to work great for many. Your 2nd router would get a public IP address at that point and then you can do all your port forwarding. Good luck!

Hello, love your video, Thanks so much. I have a question though. Once the wifi is disabled on the giga hub and you reboot the hub, will its wifi come back online and interfere with the SSID on the Asus router?

The newer firmware for both the HomeHub 4000 and the Gigahub keep the wifi disabled on reboot / power cycles. In the latest video on the channel, I talked about bypassing the modem entirely using an SFP stick. That seems to be the ultimate way to lose Bell’s wifi - because remember, even if you disable the wifi on the Homehub 4000 / Gigahub, there’s still a hidden SSID for their wireless TV service (if you don’t need the service, it takes up frequencies) and unfortunately, it can’t be disabled (at least not easily from what I’ve been made to understand) The only downsides are that the SFP stick is rather expensive and it’s an advanced method to do the setup, not for the faint at heart. No other ISP at my new location (cogeco offers bridge mode which I was using) except Bell so no choice at the moment. Thanks again.

Hello, not sure what I missed here. I tried connecting my AX5400 to the giga hub. I'm able to see the public ip address on the asus router and configure wifi. But I'm not able to get internet access when connecting to SSID from Asus router. Any idea? Thank you.

I have the home hub 3000 now, and use a Netgear wifi extender because my PC desktop is 2 floors above the location of the 3000 router. I'm going to a hub 4000 soon, and wonder if I'll still need the wifi extender. Note that Bell Fiber optic was recently installed in my home.

You might not need an extender. The HomeHub’s Wi-Fi is pretty good, but an extender could always help.

I'm getting this same internet connection from bell next month. I wanna know if whether I can make do with a router that has a 2.5g port instead of this monstrosity. Can I connect the HH4000 to something like a TP-link ax90 (which has a 2.5g wan/lan port). Is it possible to connect a 10gbps port to a 2.5gbps port via a cat 6 cable? Any info or insight is a massive help

I LOVE that RU-vid never showed these comments on my end til now (I’ve been answering things for an hour, unreal) sorry about this! Anyway, the issue was, my budget friendly switch had SFP ports to do 10 GbE and my router had 1 10GbE port that was RJ45 and one that was SFP. So I used the transceivers with a CAT8 cable between them to use my switch and 10 GbE equipped computer. I’ve since removed 2 of the transceivers (that went between the router and my switch) and am now using a small DAC (direct attach cable) with SFP on both ends to make that connection. I over complicated it in this video 😂 Again, sorry for the delayed response.

There are 2 ways to do it. The first way which is described in the video is using PPPoE passthrough. But, since filming this, I've changed the method which is coming in the next video. My advice, to get yourself up and running with no hassle, enable Advanced DMZ and make sure you put your router in the DMZ (this is done on the HomeHub 4000). Once you do this, unplug the HomeHub 4000 & router from power. Wait 30 seconds, re-plug in both and wait about 2-5 minutes. Check the router to see if you get a public IP address. Also remember, when you reboot the HomeHub 4000 for any reason, if you disabled the accessible Wi-Fi channels, they will be re-enabled. If you need to, go back into the Wi-Fi settings and disabled the HomeHub 4000's Wi-Fi (if that's your preference as you have a separate router). Hope this helps!

Honestly, you may not need it. The HomeHub 4000 is actually fairly impressive on its own depending on your home layout. I can’t even believe I’m endorsing an ISP’s native wireless routing but here we are. If you need specific specialized features, then I’d get a 2nd router - if not, the HomeHub 4000 seems to suit a lot of people’s needs, surprisingly. Also, in the spirit of this comment, if you want to use the pods, stick with the HomeHub. I doubt they’ll work with a 3rd party router like ASUS/ NetGear etc I know ASUS has mesh features, which I’ve never tested, but that could be an option too.

Great video! I recently just switched to Bell fibe 1.5gb from the Bell fibe 500 and I had the HH3000 which I bypassed but now have the Bell Giga Hub. Just wondering if I'll be able to do this setup you've done in the video with the new Giga Hub modem from Bell?

You should be able to. Now, if PPPoE fails, you MIGHT have to go on the dslreports forum and go to the bell direct forum (go to Canadian broadband, find Bell and look for the Bell Direct forum) and request the gigahub firmware update that fixes PPPoE. I’ve read reports of some people having success right away upon receiving it, where others needed the firmware sent to their home hub. Have you b1 login name ready because they’ll probably ask for that. It works fine on the Homehub 4000 but for some reason the gigahub had issues when it launched. Hopefully it’s easy for you. Hey man, are you able to see if there is a compatibility issue between bell gighub 10 gb port and asus 10gb motherboards? Also inhave an asus axe16000 and having issues getting anywhere near the 8gb speeds im paying bell for. I Also 23:42 have massive issues truing to get 8 gb speeds with my gigahub either connecting directly to the 10 gb port on my asus motherboard.

I run an ASUS motherboard with 10GbE on board and the Homehub was fine. Unfortunately, I don't use / have no plans to get a GigaHub. Consult with Bell on this is my advice. The Gigahub from what I been reading has a lot of issues. See if you can get your hands on a HomeHub 4000 as that seems to not have as many issues.

Got asus ax82u. I have bell hub 4000 with 1.5 gb but when I installed it. It gave 947 megabytes. After a few hours it got limited to a 90-97 megabytes for wifi or Ethernet. Could you help with this issue thanks.

Sounds like there’s something problematic on your network making your router throttle. I had that with a weird home theatre processor I was using. A firmware update to that device fixed it in my case.

I realize this is old but have a question if you can help. I'm getting the new UDM Special edition, (I beleive I can change the 10g SFP+ port to 2.5G). could i remove the gpon from the hh3000 and plug it in the remapped 10G udm se port? The purpose is to remove the bell hardware altogether.

You “could” But from what I read on dslreports, the throughput may not hit the speed you need as the UDM seems to have issues with PPPoE at higher speeds. Whether or not this can be addressed with a firmware update (or if there’s a workaround, or if it’s been fixed even) I’m not sure to be honest.

So this may be a stupid question but I just had the homehub 4000 installed and I’m getting alright speeds not that great. But only in 1 area of the house. The other side is abysmal and that’s because of the location. Would getting an ASUS router or any external device and hooking it up to the bell 4000 improve that signal?

Far from a stupid question. First thing I’ll ask, do you have a Mac by chance? (There’s windows tools but I know a great one on Mac) It’s a wifi scanner to check nearby wifi from your neighbours. In short, you want to go into the advanced settings of your wifi on the HomeHub and try to tell it to use a channel that nobody else is using. That helps IMMENSELY. That being said, Wi-Fi is notoriously bad when trying to penetrate brick, so there are options to improve upon the existing HomeHub’s wifi before investing anymore. My reasoning for using the ASUS router was that I wanted more control and better range. Ironically, the HomeHub is just a little slower than the ASUS so if the reason is strictly range related, it may not be worth the expense as the HomeHub is actually surprisingly decent (I can’t believe I’m saying this about ISP equipment) Let me know what kind of PC/ laptop with wifi you have. I may do a follow up to this video as a lot changed in the last few months rendering this one ALMOST out of date.

@@TechMixr Hey! Thanks for responding. So I have a Windows PC and for phone IOS. Yeah so basically it’s just the range that’s the issue. They installed it at the very front of the house so anything within the first half is pretty decent but at the back of the house the signal is pretty poor basically going from about 400mbs download speed to 20mbs and upload is even worse lol.

Basically, install this on your PC with wifi and check to see if you can find any un-congested bands / channels within the available spectrum in the advanced settings of the HomeHub Wi-Fi page and then change it to something nobody else is using. You may see some improvement. I’ve heard extremely mixed reviews about the pods from Bell, so if it doesn’t help, you may then want to think about getting a separate router.

It should be working fine. Make sure that you’re not attempting Advanced DMZ at the same time. It should just plug and play. Also, make sure your login credentials are correct.

I have used tge same credentials as the ones from HH4000 (and of corse I put wrong credentials on HH4000 for it not to authenticate as pppoe) but still the router after it cannot authenticate. I got it working only using DMZ… that is Why i posted the comment because I have the feeling that either something changed in HH4000 or it simply doesn’t work as plug and play… something else needs to be done…

I finally got 10gbps networking going, got the RT-AX89X, Bell Gigahub 3Gbps service, used a DAC connection from my PC with a StarTech SFP+ card, and had to use a MikroTek switch to get it working properly. If I plugged directly into the router, I got good download speeds (3Gbps) but upload was under 10Mbps. I haven’t changed the NAT acceleration yet, as we did r notice any heavy cpu during speed tests. Maybe this got fixed with a firmware update? Also, what about jumbo packets? Should this be turned on at the router? Have you played with this? Do you have any other 10gbps devices on your network? (NAS?)

All my 10GbE clients works - but honestly, avoid PPPoE if you can and just use Advanced DMZ and leave NAT acceleration on. It’s been solid and since this video. I’ve realized that consumer routers and even some enterprise routers can’t handle PPPoE well (that task seems to be single threaded in even quad core routers) - the best way to get multi-threaded PPPoE performance is to either buy a really expensive router or build a Pfsense box with a beefy CPU (like a Ryzen 3/5) which defeats the whole purpose of ‘budget 10GbE’ If you’re having issues using Advanced DMZ with NAT acceleration on - let me know here and I’ll link the new firmware ASUS sent me (it’s still in Beta but it fixed any issues I had using NAT acceleration- it’s a weird bug we found) - hopefully they eventually push that firmware public soon, but it’s also been a few months.

@@TechMixr You are absolutely correct about PPPoE passthrough. Yes, adding another NAT hop via the Bell router may be perceived as inelegant, but with my own tests with the AX89X and the Bell Giga Hub, PPPoE is slower than NAT'ng on the Bell Giga Hub. My download/upload with PPPoE is ~ 2.8 Gbps/ 1.1 Gbps. With DHCP (or static) on the WAN, my speeds are ~3.1 Gbps /3.0 Gbps on my Bell 3 Gig plan. Just put the AX89X in the DMZ (not Advanced DMZ since this is problematic) and be done with it. Also the load on the CPU is very low, even w/o NAT acceleration via CPU.

To be honest, if you’re going to do PPPoE, it’s probably not going to work as well as acceleration of those PPPoE frames is a hardware process that cost effective routers won’t do. If you’re doing advanced DMZ - it’ll be about the same as the HomeHub 4000, but keep in mind, you may actually be doing double NAT even though you’re getting an IP address. Now if Bell had proper DHCP / real bridge mode that’d be a different story. But I ranted about that in another video…. TLDR: it’s a ‘you get what you pay for’ scenario with the router. And avoid Ubiquiti stuff, it’s way higher in terms of cost and doesn’t accelerate PPPoE.

You got two subs right away ;) As for networking-speaking, man oh man am I pissed that I've got the ASUS GT-AXE11000! I thought it was an amazing router but it turns out there's only a SINGLE 2.5G port! WHY ASUS..... WHYYYYYYYYY! Anyhoo, we decided to return it and go with the AX89X. We got the same Bell Homehub 4000 with blazing 3G internet and got a 5 ports 10G switch coming up. It is the TP-Link TL-SX105. It has 5x MultiG unmanaged ports. We plan to plug our 2 PC's to the 10G switch + the ISP. We'll have 2 more for later usage... maybe an high speed NAS! I do have a question though... would our network require that Wiitek 10GBase-T 10G RJ45 to SFP+ adapter you mentioned?

@@TechMixr hi! Thanks for the follow-up! We got all our setup installed and... the speed ain't that fast surprisingly. We only get the full 3G at the Bell modem. In the router and switch, we get maxed out at 1.5G. We wonder if there's an hiccup on the hardware or maybe some settings on the router? We sure could use some insight into this. 😉 One's thing for sure... we can't wait to watch part 2!! 😁 BTW... we just found out about a new upcoming router by ASUS... the AXE16000. Same look as the AXE11000 but that one offers Quad band and the best feature IMO, 2x 10Gbe MultiG ports! 🤯 Seems like a fantastic router but only offered in USA as if now. I might break the bank and get it anyway! Saw that you had issues with your PC. I hope its fine now!

Boss man i have the asus gt-ac5300 at home i believe is a wifi 5 but super powerful had it for 3 years so far no issues, i am expecting to receive my bell 3gbps next week with its gigahub, do you think my asus will be stronger than the gigahub or the gigahub will be stronger due to wifi 6E ?

So something to consider That router I don’t believe has acceleration for PPPoE- so you may barely even hit gigabit speeds with a wired client. The Homehub 4000 is a decent router, I think the gigahub is good too but I’ve heard issues with it. Going beyond wifi 5, you’ll see an improvement. But experiment. If you find you’re having issues with the ASUS, maybe remove it from the equation entirely. Also, if you’re going to use the ASUS, if you notice the speeds are really bad, you can do advanced DMZ- which can be problematic to get going the first time but you’ll get your speeds back. Unfortunately- it’s like a weird double NAT’d wannabe bridge mode. Just my 2 cents. Hope it works though!

You don’t have to turn it off, however, you’d want to make sure that your wifi channels on the new router is different than the HomeHub (you can adjust the chosen channel on each device) Out of curiosity, why leave the HomeHub’s Wi-Fi enabled? Are you debating putting another router elsewhere for range reasons?

Well something to consider. Natively, the HomeHub 3000 even directly connected has some major speed issues (I tried this at a friend’s place a few months before I got fibre to the home) so if you add on the processing of passing through PPPoE to a separate router it probably won’t get any better. From the preliminary testing I did between the 3000 and the 4000, I’ll say the 4000 is a substantial upgrade for both wired and wireless connections- and my experience of using the 4000 through the ASUS gets me higher than advertised speeds (as seen in both my Bell 3 Gigabit Part 1 & 2 videos- average around 3200 megabit wired and over 750 and sometimes 800 megabit wirelessly connected) If you can get your hands on a HomeHub 4000, it’s worth it in my opinion. I can’t confidently say that the 3000 is a good option for this. I’ve read many people had a lot of issues. However- and this is where it gets dicey. Having a 3000 is fantastic IF you’re go the more expensive and even exotic route of completely bypassing the 3000. The transceiver can be removed from the 3000 and used in a managed switch with some configuration (while also being mindful of compatibility with the switch). If you have a HomeHub 4000/Gigahub you lose this option. And I’ve seen lots and lots of people on DSLreports who have successfully done this. I’ve never had an experience with it to endorse it. Just some things to think about. Hope this clarifies things.

If the bell modem is reset, will the default WiFi from the bell modem get turned on? In which case you have to turn off the WiFi settings every time? If that's the case, it seems like a back up power supply is needed

So ... this is a firmware thing that Bell did. To be honest, I personally believe, they do this for technicians when they're at a customer's residence to aid in troubleshooting. Unfortunately, it's an annoying issue. But I don't think the 5 seconds it takes to re-disable the Wi-Fi on the HomeHub 4000 warrants spending un-needed money on a battery backup lol .. I get your sentiment, don't get me wrong, but I believe they did this by design. In talking to the Bell Moderator on DSLReports, it's something they're looking to fix possibly, but it's still in some form of discussion.

Hi there, awesome video :) Thanks for sharing. A few questions: 1) I am assuming that you keeping off the wifi on the HH4000 permanently ? And from that time on Asus router will be providing wifi ? What are your wifi speeds using Asus router and the range as well ? 2) I am assuming that the 2nd 10GB port on Asus AX89X router can go out to a 10GB managed switch that I use to connect all of my wired devices on my LAN in my house via Ethernet ? 3) Can you then add Asus Mesh system to extend fast wifi in my house ? My HH4000 is in the basement and since I need to plug the AX89X directly into it then Auss AX89X will aslo be in the basement (so I need fast wifi on my 2nd and 3rd levels of my house) 4) If you were to add the Asus Mesh setup to this - what would you recommend - something like Asus XT8 2 pack - so one unit on 1st level and second on the 2nd level of the house ? 5) How do you setup XT8 with the AX89X ? 7) And finally what are you really gaining from this setup ? Great Video. I am currently using a pair of Asus ZenWifi ET12 and an AX88U. I have it set up like this but my issue is at the asus router I see 500+ speeds. but if I connect to any lan port on the network I get maybe 96. which makes no sence to me as its wired connection. All Cat 6 cables too

@@UrbanRogue1 WAN would we your wide area network (the internet) I BELIEVE the Homehub 4000 supports 2.5 GbE. That’s the port you should be using. LAN is your local area network (within your home) where devices like computers, other devices within the home go. Wi-Fi is part of your LAN.

You need to see the "CTF (Cut Through Forwarding) is enabled" in yellow for your "NAT Acceleration" setting. Without CTF your router's CPU is limiting you. My setting is set to Auto, I for the life of me can't remember what it took to get the "CTF" to appear as well. Without CTF I was limited to about 300 Mbps, with CTF working I get the full gigabit (on my RT-AC3100).

Interesting! I actually have a custom firmware from ASUS that fixed the issue (changed our settings from PPE to NSS for the method in which the 10GbE ports communicate) - I’m going to do a follow up that covers this and hopefully ASUS will have rolled out the update publicly. It’s great because now I can saturate 3 gig with almost no CPU usage now and all my 1 GbE devices perform exactly as they should as well. But I may roll back the firmware and try your suggestion. great video thanks for uploading... new subsriber... I just switch from Sunwire to Bell here in Sudbury and I am enjoying the Bell Five speeds... I also bought a Asus RT-AX86U router and it seems that the NAT Acceleration option is not there under Switch Control under LAN... :( but just wanted to confirm with you that this acceleration is only effecting devices that are hard wired into the Asus router right? All wireless devices are not affected?

Hey thanks for the compliment and my sincere apologies for taking so long to reply. So here’s a rundown of sorts: - it only seems to affect devices that have NAT acceleration as an option. So if you can’t find it on your router, you probably don’t have that feature. - it didn’t affect wi-fi. I say didn’t because I solved it (see the next point) - ASUS and I went back and forth and solved it so I’m running a custom beta firmware at the moment on the AX89X which has some different connection types for those with multi gigabit internet connections. Hopefully they roll this out in a public firmware soon. I’m desperately trying to find time to record part 2 but between work and burnout, it’s been a real challenge of late. GREAT VIDEO!!! i am also using the 1.5G plan, and i was setting my AX92U as your tutorial, successfully using my own router(wich the HH4000 only have 4-500M). but somehow, the speed test only showing 600M download and 800M upload. i guess the upload speed is correct, but i have no idea how to change the download speed.

There is a WiFi 6E version of this router it looks like, but I can't comment on its performance and whether or not there's bugs. That being said, I love this router, but I know that prices for it tend to fluctuate. I actually bought a 2nd one and am running AIMesh w/ a 10 GbE backhaul through a QNAP 10GbE switch (I feature this in my Bell 3 Gigabit Part 2 video, which you can find here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iVROIfxi1oI.html ) Hope this helps, sorry I couldn't give a more conclusive answer.

So I’m wondering I want to set up a router but keep the same bell name and password I would still need to disconnect the wifi signal from the home hub so the router would broadcast the signal and there would still be no interference correct

You can, but there will be a hidden SSID from the Bell Homehub you can’t disable that will be broadcasting. Do you want to use Bell’s routing features or the new router’s features to manage your network?

@@JNGaming143 if you use the same SSID and password, it’ll just work. I’ve done this many times when switching routers. That way you don’t need to re-sign into your Wi-Fi on every device. You can rename the Bell Wi-Fi to something else to avoid any conflicts within the Homehub and then disable it. That’s probably your safest bet after making your new router’s SSID the Bell one.

So I did the Bell 3G review if you haven’t seen it, check that video out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Jj6H6lL2dqo.html Now a couple of things: - this video (the one we’re commenting on) is probably the best way to get max gaming and performance out of Bell Fibe generally. So make sure you follow it (I play MW2 on an Xbox One X and get messages that I’m cheating constantly because of the super low lag). It doesn’t get more detailed than this to be honest. - if you’re getting 3 gig for gaming, don’t lol. It will only impact downloads…… on PC. Your PS5 can’t take advantage of anything beyond 1 gigabit. And download / upload speed is completely unrelated to in-game performance. I mention this in the video I just linked. Hope that helps! So 2 things: - this guide is now deprecated - it’s getting updated in the next video - the HomeHub 4000 CANNOT be bypassed. I’m using the 10GbE port in this video with PPPoE….. BUT some Ubiquiti devices and virtually all consumer routers struggle with PPPoE. Since this, I’ve went with Advanced DMZ and for super quick transfers, gaming and everything I’ve thrown at it, it’s been rock solid. Not to mention extremely low CPU usage. There’s a lot of threads on DSLReports about this. Just want to let you know that there is no way to bypass the HomeHub 4000 (short of violating Bell’s terms of service, and even then it’s super flakey)

@@CPR9969 that’s not how that works unfortunately. All the houses getting fibre to the home get a GPON or XGS-PON. That’s where the service is delivered. With the HomeHub 3000 there was a removable SFP adapter which (simply put anyway) adapts the signal to the modem. The SFP could be removed and placed in a separate router and some VLAN tagging could be done. The key here is that SFP module. That is registered to Bell’s network. The HomeHub 4000 has that GPON or XGS-PON cable plugged into a built in non-removable SFP that’s soldered the motherboard of the modem. The cable is removable- but this is where it gets dicey. You COULD program a transceiver theoretically. But that would require spoofing (cloning) a bunch of stuff off of a legit SFP which then puts unauthorized equipment on their network. And if you’re caught somehow (and they can figure it out fairly easily) you’ll probably have your service terminated. So unfortunately if you can’t access a HomeHub 3000 (which is getting more unlikely as the days pass) that’s the only other option and even then, I wouldn’t do it and do NOT recommend you even try it. The HomeHub 4000 via advanced DMZ is fine for most people to be honest. PPPoE works if your router can use more than one core to handle the PPPoE frames, but most routers struggle with that and lock up.

Found this video via DSL reports. Thanks! I'm trying to troubleshoot why my ASUS86U router speedtest gives me 500mb down/up on the router itself, but the HH4K runs 1Gb down on its own. Can't for the life of me figure out why the router's direct speed test throws half the speed over ethernet.

Hey! Thanks for watching it! So a couple of questions, are you using PPPoE or Advanced DMZ and (I know this next question will be silly but I’ve made this mistake) - are you sure your cables are handling the bandwidth? I’ve had some odd issues with Ethernet in the past where I was getting half-speed even though they were CAT6 cables. Try replacing those first, but reply with your current configuration and I’ll see what I can think of to help!

@@TechMixr managed to do a full factory reboot and resetup, and the speeds are closer to 800down up using the internal to router Speedtest, full speed ethernet out of the router and 5ghz runs 600 down, the 2.4 radio might be bad though. Apparently happens in the 86u, 3m away it sometimes hits 50 down sometimes hits 5 down. Sad times for the compatibility and range band

@@ZeromuS_ can you dig through your router and see if there’s an option for NAT acceleration? If it’s enabled, disable it. I mentioned this in the video and in doing some research, some ASUS routers have it and some don’t. I.E,. The AX11000 doesn’t have it, but yours might. The behaviour you’re explaining sounds like NAT acceleration is on. Also, are you using PPPoE or Advanced DMZ, or did you just connect it straight into the modem and not change anything?

Hey, thanks for the video. I have a question regarding the WAN port selection: I have recently upgraded to Bell with 1gbps down and 750mbps up but my download speed is around 1.2gbps. I was wondering if it is possible to use the SPF+ connection as a WAN to the Bell router (10gps lan on Bell with the Wiitek 10GBase-T 10G RJ45 to SFP+ Copper Transceiver to the Asus router SFP+ with CAT6 cable) and use the other 10gbps LAN port (on the Asus router) to connect to a 2.5gbps switch so all my devices with 2.5Gb lan can reach higher than 1gbps internet speed. So if you're using the HomeHub 4000 into the ASUS router via 10 GbE (via a transceiver or straight) you'll get beyond gigabit. However, the 10 GbE SFP port on the AX89X can't sync at 2.5 GbE. I 'believe' the RJ45 port that's 10 GbE does support 2.5 GbE (if you give me a few hours, I can check this as I have a 2.5 GbE USB-C dongle for my Macbook Pro and can verify this for you). If the RJ45 10 GbE port can sync at 2.5 GbE, then by all means, adding a 2.5 GbE switch should work. Just wrapping up some stuff here for my work, but I can give you a better answer later :)

@@TechMixrThanks for the fast Reply, Since I don't have the Asus router yet, I wanted to know if there is an option (on the Asus web GUI WAN section) to select the SFP+ port on the Asus router as the WAN port and see if the 10gbps port on the Asus Router auto negotiate at lower 2.5gbps to a 2.5GbE switch (like QNAP QSW-1105-5T). From what I have researched on the web, you can select any of the 10gbps ports (LAN or the SFP+) or the 1gbps (blue WAN port) as WAN ports but only the 10gbps LAN port can operate at 10/5/2.5/1 gbps as you also mentioned. Appreciate your help!!!

@@parhamsan Yes, you can designate the SFP port as your WAN port on the AX89X (that's what I'm doing) - now if you have speed issues - there is a major update to this video I may have to add on as I've been going back and forth with ASUS about the NAT acceleration bug that exists. There is a firmware that fixes it, which I can send around, but it's not public as of yet. Anyway, I'll let you know if the 10 GbE RJ45 port will sync to 2.5. I THINK you're ok, but I'll confirm in a few hours :)

Can't wait for your other video since here, it seems totally impossible for us to reach the desired speed of 3Gbit or close if we're not individually directly connected to the HH4000. Which isn't what we want of course. We bought the transceiver, a 10G SFP+ unmanaged multigig TP-Link switch, all cables are cat7 or 8, both computers have 10Gbit network adapters and nothing seems to work. How exactly would you go about this? Most precisely, on which port would you connect the HH4000 and on which one the switch? I've been trying to assign the SFP+ to the WAN in the dual WAN tab, but doing so locks out the WAN completely. I'm turning bald from pulling hair. Have a nice day! So this guide is going to get updated in a future video, and unless you have a router that can accelerate PPPoE, I wouldn't recommend using it (you'll throttle and see terrible speeds) - when I switched to 3 gigabit, I noticed it was actually slower than 1.5 gigabit via PPPoE so I started using Advanced DMZ back in April. It's been flawless. In my very heavy usage, it's been solid. Also, if you do anything that runs multi-connection with PPPoE (like a torrent or any other service that multi-threads a download / upload) you may even crash your router unless you have hardware acceleration for PPPoE (virtually no consumer routers seem to handle PPPoE well at high speeds - as consumer routers don't seem to have PPPoE acceleration) - so my honest advice, just go Advanced DMZ and make sure your router is in the DMZ on the Home Hub 4000. That being said, you can try for yourself. Call Bell and get your login and password. Outside of getting it from the tech who did your installation, this is the best way I know to get that info. But if you're running 3 gigabit or above (for God's sakes we have 8 gig now in select areas) - trust me, stick with Advanced DMZ.

@@dereksnider7148 here’s the thing The national average of consumers is well below 200 megabit. Gigabit is still overkill for the majority and this is clearly just Bell flexin’ and getting ahead of Rogers. Most websites / servers cap at gigabit (if that). Also, to go beyond 10GbE would be costly to you as an end user (that modem rental would be $300/month easy not to mention how costly provisioning from Bell would be) 10GbE could be great for 10-15 years to be perfectly honest. By then, the national average MIGHT be 500 megabit.

Thank you so so so much for this video. I just upgraded my Asus router to the AX11000 and wanted to confirm setup. It’s defaulted to a DHCP WAN connection to my Bell Fibe HH4000 modem. I need to switch it over to PPPoE. One thing I’ve noted, every time I change a setting on the router or reboot it, I need to reboot the bell modem to reset the internet connection. Is this because of the DHCP or will that happen with PPPoE as well?

Yeah that’s the wonderful part about the Homehub 4000 and the Gigahub- it insists on constantly having to rebooted if you change anything on the ASUS that requires the ASUS having to be rebooted. So, the way I handle this, if I change anything on the router, I just unplug the modem until the ASUS comes back fully online, then I re-power Bell’s equipment. It’s absolutely annoying but it’s a way to deal with it. Thanks for the comment!

This may be a case by case situation unfortunately. Anything that interrupts the HomeHub’s connection like a router reboot or some kind of disconnect makes this a necessity to perform a power cycle. Hopefully we see Bell address this in a firmware update. There’s hope though, until recently, if you had disabled Wi-Fi in the HomeHub and power cycled, you’d have to re-disable it. This has since been fixed to not require that anymore. 🤞🏾

@@TechMixr so I’ve discovered that my Bell gigahub modem and asus router have a very fragile relationship. I’ve set up with PPPoE and was pulling 1.7gb download speed. I added a second computer hardwired directly to the bell modem via PPPoE. Still pulling 1.7gb. Sunday morning the top speed I get at the asus router is 95mbs. No clue why the drop.

Have you updated the firmware to the latest firmware by chance? Also, when you have done the latest firmware update, you can enable NAT acceleration under switch control. On the AX89X the standard WAN port is limited to gigabit. You can delegate the 10GbE LAN (RJ45 port) or the 10GbE LAN (SFP+ port) to act as WAN. This way, you can get over gigabit from the service (In my case, the package I'm on is 1.5 gigabit download speed). I plug in my main computer with 10GbE on-board, to the other free 10GbE port that doesn't have the HomeHub 4000 to get the full speed. If I do it through the WAN port, I lose 33% of my potential download speed, so this is the way to go about it on this router :)

I've considered bells gigabit internet since my router only had one 2.5 gigabit port and my PC has a gigabit port but I've just been so hesitant but they got a promo going on for $50 dollars for first 2 years. I've always lacked upload speed so I'm really considering it.

My Rogers was hitting the advertised speeds and even a little higher and after having Bell for 2 days I knew instantly I was going to cancel my cable internet. No, this is using the HomeHub 4000 to get the connection and then going from that to the Asus router. There's no way (without violating Bell's terms of service and potentially getting banned off their network) to bypass the HomeHub 4000.

Unfortunately that’s not possible on my setup. I get 1.5+ gigabit from my ISP which takes up one of the 10 GbE ports. The reason I do it this way is to get over gigabit speeds to the computer that’s directly connected. Also, if the plan was to use pfsense, I wouldn’t have gone this route. The plan was to simplify the network and have great wifi which is what was accomplished here 😉

@@Zenbeau it can, but unfortunately I can’t speak to the experience of it outside of what I’ve heard around. I may be completely wrong, but I believe the pods don’t do Wi-Fi 6 (yet) but that may have changed. I would definitely try using the Homehub 4000 as is first. I think the hassle of the pods and potential issues with a wireless solution to extend your internet is weighted favouring the idea of just getting a proper router and using PPPoE to it for extended coverage. But I can understand budget / partner approval as some of the reasons that may not be an option. Definitely worth experimenting per situation. As I haven’t looked into the pods, it may be worth doing a video about them as a comparison to my dual ASUS router setup. But I think I’d only do that video if the pods did Wi-Fi 6/6E as I don’t think there’s value in showcasing a Wi-Fi 5 product in 2023. Very interesting questions though!
