Thank you John for being so straightforward with your videos! Finally I can stop looking at all those “review” videos, who dont even have the unit on hand, but want to rack up their views and subs. Looking forward to the series 👏🏻
I’ve stopped watching all those reviews too and the odd production pro who just takes too long to explain things or their ego gets in the way. Keeping it natural and concise wins the day for me. 👍 ^Catie
Great to see one of these in the wild. I've ordered one but the supplier can't give me a delivery date yet. With all those buttons though I think they are missing one thing - the large "Don't Panic!" sign. :)

Great Video! Looking forward to see what you can really do with the Super source on an extreme different from there other switchers and what updates you think will be coming out to better improve the super source on the atem mini extreme like borders.
this is excellent - great overview of all the ways you can use the Extreme -- you gave me a few new ideas. now i'm looking forward to more videos as you share more about what you shared re: SuperSource etc. good stuff! New Fan + Subscriber :D

Wow! Blackmagic has really changed the game with their ATEM Mini line. They basically have a product at every price point now. Still dumbfounded that the first ATEM Mini came in SO cheap compared to what was on the market at the time and they keep coming out with more at REAALLLLY good prices. So tempted to get the Extreme for dual USB, dual HDMI, and all those manual controls so you can skip the software on a lot of things. I had a Mini before the pandemic (then got a Pro when they first released) and between using them myself and renting them out they definitely more than paid for themselves. One of my best gear investments.
Super impressive how much is in this switcher. To think that the 1M/E models (and up) don't even have some of these features! Can't wait to see what they release later in the year (if anything!)
Are you able to cue/solo/preview individual audio inputs using Atem Software Control? In previous models, the headphone icon in the audio page was greyed out
Can you use the usb ports as two webcam outputs or two hard drive outputs? I assume no but just curious. It would be cool for hard drive redundancy or two webcam outs to different computers.
@@heretorecord I have tried to connect the two USB to my single computer and it is recognizing both as two different webcams BUT I was not able to use the webcam properly. When I switched to the second cam, it froze everything and I was then not able to fix. Had to reboot the ATEM to regain webcam functionalities.
@@heretorecord I really hope so and I'm hoping that we can have also something that allows to select what output should go to each webcam. Zoom compress differently if you do a share screen (from a webcam) vs using the Webcam for a standard camera, Zoom is compressing differently. Text do not render properly with Zoom because of the over compression but for the share screen, it renders perfectly. So having the two differentiated and addressable would be huge!
Hi . have atem extreme mini pro iso. I installed software . And have hdmi cables connected from sony camera's to atem directly 4 ports , And i connected the atem mini to my laptop from USB A ( atem Mini) to hdmi ( PC ) But I cant see the preview in the software.i even watched the tutorial but i dont understand Silly questions. Where can I see the previews of my sony cameras on my laptop is it inside the software or some another program that I need to install to see camera previews. Also where does the atem save the files of recording as I have iso. Do I have insert memory card somewhere in atem for recording . And which button to press to start recording ON atem because i dont see recording button. Please really need help. Thankyou
Nice! Do you find the quality of the signal to be quite good on the ATEM's - unlike most of the Chinese products? I find their images to be harsh, with contrast reminiscent of Hi-8 cameras - which is not what I want to show! I think this comes under the heading of "signal degradation" or something. It certainly speaks to a hidden higher quality of componentry.
Hello John, awesome work as usual 👍 I have a question wich is more related to H2R graphics than this new product : can you switch between VLC and H2R easily when you use the same computer for both sources ? I did not see any command or remote command (I have 2 stream deck) to "switch off" the chroma screen from H2RG. That command would allow me to link it with other commands into the same button in Companion. (For example : cut off H2RG, full screen in VLC, play video number #...)
any over heating issues? Have you ran it for more then 3hrs? Do the hdmi inputs on the unit itself heat up minutes after startup? There was a few complaints on this. Might have been a bad unit or power supply... but they move stuff so fast at BMD that it scares me to but the extreme. Thank you for the video.
Thank you John for the great content how many days takes from preorder to receive it ? from what sealer do u order it ? as you know when extreme iso start shipping ?
I have the mini pro and when you switch from one camera to another with PIP on, the PIP turns off. Kinda annoying during church livestream. Does the Extreme model do the same or did Blackmagic fix that? Please advise.
Hi, I have a probut lem and needed assistant. I want my HDMI OUT for my PGM which is connected to a monitor to be muted. The monitor when connected for monitoring comes with audio. How do I mute the HDMI Out when needed and bring back audio when needed. Will this also affect the live stream audio?
Thank you for your channel. Great content. On the ATEM Mini Extreme, is there a way to configure the multi view (or some other output method) such that the connected HDMI monitor is filled with the PROGRAM with audio levels visible? You can press a button on the ATEM Mini Extreme and tell the multi view port to output the PROGRAM. That's good, but it doesn't have the audio levels on it. When I'm running a show, I need to setup a large monitor with the PROGRAM and the audio levels. Is this feasible?
Unfortunately you cannot quite configure it to that need. The audio status window cannot be bigger than 1/16 of the screen. I did make a video about Multiview specifically if you want to learn more.... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xsPciZfMZQc.html
Hello Ave! A couple thoughts before you sell your ATEM - (1) Should you develop a setup which allows for multiple guests (and/or multiple cams, computers, Hyperdecks, etc.)you might actually need more than 8 inputs and you get 3 more using the ATEM as a sub-switcher and (2) Should you choose to create a portable setup, your Extreme stays wired in your studio and your Mini hits the road.
Hello im thinking to buy this produckt and have questions about recording. Can i record highquality (hyperdeck high) Program output to an external SSD without recording ISO s ? And when I want to broadcast live and record at the same time, will my recording be only in broadcast quality(stream high) or can I record in high quality separately to SSD (hyperdeck high 70Mb/s)
Hey - You can indeed record HyperDeck High to a SSD attached withoput the ISOs. There is a setting in the ISO version of the ATEM to enable/disable ISO recordings of all inputs. You cannot record and stream at two different qualities, so if you set your streaming quality to Streaming Low (or example) then your Program recording will also be set to Streaming low.
The other question I have is about the ISO model. I put three hdmi inputs into the Extreme and one microphone input, and after about 2 minutes of recording the ISO recordings on my SSD the files were about 6GB, with the audio alone at about 1GB! The ISO option will record all 9 channels of video (8 + program) and 8 stereo channels of audio; even in my case of 3 videos and 1 audio. Fast SSD's are required for this unit and are expensive, so it would be good to only record what is needed so as to maximise recording time on a given SSD. However my question is what is your experience in opening up the ISO files in DaVinci Resolve? I have a fast computer and use Preniere Pro extensively without issues, but opening up the DaVinci Resolve ISO file resulted in not being able to even play the video back smoothly making it impossible to edit. Am I doing something wrong? Is it that Resolve is trying to process 8 video streams simultaneously (even though 5 video channels are blank) that is slowing it down?! I tried deleting the five blank channels yet the playback performance was still shockingly slow and jittery making it impossible to edit. I even tried creating optimised video in Resolve for my timeline and after about 30 minutes of processing time for the 2 minute timeline and still not halfway through, I cancelled the process. Your thoughts and suggestions, and maybe even a video on using the ISO model end-to-end with Resolve would be greatly appreciated. After all, the ISO model is hundreds of dollars more expensive than the base Extreme model, and this is the only extra feature it offers, so it is important that it works well with DaVinci Resolve. At this point it is unusable for me. Help ! :-)
It took me a while to get it right on my PC but you will want to make sure that resolve is set up to use the right GPU. Like you mentioned, there are a few optimisation things you can do to help it run smooth so those would certainly be the best place to keep tweaking.
@@heretorecord Thanks again!! I do have the GPU set correctly. Any other suggestions? I assume that it should run smoothly straight out of the ATEM mini Extreme ISO without having to convert the formats of all videos. Yet when I selected "optimise" the video, it would have taken an hour to "optimise" 2 minutes of video (8 streams with 5 being blank videos). Any suggestions you can give would be GREATLY appreciated. Again thanks for all your videos!
Having had the ISO for many months, I realised that I rarely used the ISO features to their full extent, so I opted for the non-ISO this time. Though i still plan to borrow one!
You cannot, it will be Program only. Would be cool if they added that though! The beauty now though is that you could route one of the two HDMI outputs to a capture card and use that instead!
Excellent videos. Thanks. I have played around with the ATEM Mini Extreme and while I had 3 hdmi inputs and 1 output, and I waa reading the manual, the ATEM Extreme temperature was pretty much idle, and after about an hour and it became extremely hot. Over 54 degrees Celicius underneath. I burnt my finger touching an empty hdmi port! Removing the ATEM from my desk, I measured the desk temp to be 50 degrees with a professional Fluke thermometer. Are you experiencing something similar? Is it running that hot for you too? And if you fill all the 8 ports with inputs, and really put the ATEM to work, what happens to the temperature /fan cooling? Considering how hot it runs in idle, this is an important test to do I would suggest. Your thoughts?
I have not measured it myself but I am aware that these units run hot under load. There are of course a lot of features and processing packed into one small box. Keep an eye on it though!
@@heretorecord Thanks for your quick reply. My point is that it was "not" under load and yet got really hot. Only t3 hdmi inputs, so the most it was doing was rescaling two video input streams, yet still got exceedingly hot after an hour of being idle. I would appreciate it if you would try the same and let me know your experience. Perhaps I got a dud unit. :-)
@@heretorecord Thanks. I have tried another one and it runs hot too. I am thinking that if the rescalers do not have to work hard it would make a difference. Do you have all inputs and outputs running at the same frequency, eg 50Hz?
The only difference is that the ISO model will record all 8 inputs in addition to the Program output when you connect an SSD, and it will create a DaVinci Resolve file for you to reedit your production.
Great overview John! 👍✨ I liked the ”boxes” in your video when you talked about the groups of buttons on the unit. I now look forward to that ”super source” video you teased us with. Keep up the good work! 🙂 (I ordered the Extreme ISO).
It would be great if you could focus on the presentation you are currently working on rather than every other sentence being about the future other videos you will do later.
