A short video on the history of a one off made Atkinson 455 Borderer tractor unit with lots of facts and figures. Fitted with a Rolls Royce with a road ranger 9 speed gear box.
These old Atkinson are among bad ass heavy haulage trucks ever made . I remember living in Jamaica as a kid & watched one fully loaded with Sugar Cane pulling a Leyland River also hauling Sugar Cane that had broken down up a hill . Back in these days, Sugar Cane haulers never left another stranded.
What a lovely wagon modern truck drivers don't know their born with all their automatic gearboxes the old trucks sounds so much better than the modern suff .
Oh to turn the clock back and make people aware of the consequences of not being content with theier home products. And I'm not talking about lorrys ,but clothing, cars, etc, we all would would have pride in our nation
It made a change for me to ride shotgun in this old girl as much as I love driving & owning her, it`s a joy to be in the passenger seat, takes me back to the 1970,s as a young lad riding in an Atkinson defender 8 legger tipper with a 220 cummins coupled to a 10 speed roadranger. We had a brilliant day thanks Richard you did her proud.
Took me back to the late 1970s when Atkinsons were beginning to become uncommon. I had forgotten the noise and the way these things roll on the road. Thank you.
Borderer was my favourite truck from childhood year's, spotted on the roads everywhere,a timeless classic still looks good today, could you imagine if they did a modern version of this, somethings are better left alone 👍
Always worth watching with out old put some of the younger drivers out there they would not now how to change gear I used to drive a leyland Clydesdale with a 6 speed gearbox it made you think when you hat to change gear 🇮🇲 👍
Truck is a credit to you. Shame all the British truck makers have gone. When I was a kid growing up in the late 60s/70s I lived just up the road from the AEC factory near Southall. I remember seeing what must have been test lorries driving around with no body on, just the cab.
Brilliant, 3 years on YTE 304N, with D.V. Williams, Atki through and through. Had a drive in the latest eu6 bummer trucks, that’s why the class1 licence stays in the drawer. More videos please👍👌
Cool video. That bit of road coming out of hull towards beginning of the 63 I travel that way on a regular basis when I’m on my way back across the Pennines to Manchester from National avenue in hull. Granted not in a lovely old girl like that but in my companies Mercedes actros. All the creature comforts but no character like the Atki !
hi great video. as an ex AEC ltd employee we use to fit a Rolls Royce 220bhp to the Marathon if the customer wanted it. i think a few went to BLMC as car transporters, the g/box was a Fuller road ranger. great days there, the engines were painted in green by RR. personly i think they were underpowered. it worked better with the AEC TL12
This vehicle on mines rescue was manned all year round. We did 7 12 hr days and 7 12 hr nights on a rota basis. I was the only one to take it to the Boulby potash mine north of Whitby when it was measured up for the concrete anchor pad. The generator was on the back of a Leyland Hippo, it was so slow it's a wonder that it ever got to a pit.
Nice moves on the shift Mr B. Don’t let JS Near that you’d need a box😂. I know that estate in the video I deliver there on a Wednesday a bit rough for the old girl at the entrance. 🙆♂️
Your right about the entrance to the estate, the Atlantic ocean in stormy weather is flatter than that road surface 😂, she lives in the transport museum on the estate.
Dunlop Maxaret Anti-Skid systems were fitted to RAF Fast Jets of the time, most were hydraulic but Buccaneer had an electrical version installed. They had a rubber wheel that ran on a knurled ring attached to the wheel, compared left to right and took airspeed into account to regulate brake pressure at the wheel.
I miss the sound of my roller, such a bark. I find a rolls is well suited in front of a roadranger, Cummins takes too long for a quick upshift you need a dip on the clutch brake or Jakes to slow it. Never driven a Gardner roadranger but on a David brown I'm pretty sure I could have a nap between gears.
Great video, Rich! Don't know if you twigged it, but the Borderer at 3:17 (RHE 315M) later went on to a life in general haulage with Lorian Transpor of Trafford Park, gaining a tag axle along the way. It was later refurbished by one of their drivers but I haven't heard anything of it for a long time. P.S. I listened to this through my studio headphones, and that motor sounds superb! I was so tempted by it at Kev Dennis' sale in 1997, but I already several on the go. It went to a better home than I would have given it, as I wouldn't have appreciated its history the same as subsequent owners clearly have.
I keep her in the South Yorkshire transport museum in Rotherham. I,m willing to take you out for a spin in her sometime if ever your up this way for a donation to the museum.
@@Mr_b_yorkshire_farmer no 270rolls it was meant for corona soft drinks apparently mick. corona sort drinks not sure that’s fact exhaust passenger side used to blow smoke over passengers at bus stops
Hi got one of them borderer Atkinson,s brand new at ferrymasters Preston the only thing was they let them out the factory without power steering as they had run out of components Twas a pig to steer in low gears it went back to Walton le dale after about three weeks and was fitted with the Power steering arm etc it had the 220 Cummins sounded great got an old eagle diesel badge and a Gardner 180 badge knocking about in my man cave happy days
I was lucky enough to have an Atkinson Borderer with a Gardiner 180 working for Alpha Bulk Liquids; a tremendous vehicle often working at 34 tons (over legal limit) carrying gas oil. Engine would pull away on a 1:3 in third (out of 6) gear, this because linkage was worn out and slapping it over would knock against the engine cover...never needed to rev over 2000 rpm. Incidentally the "dish" rear of its' tank featured in "Withnail and I" filmed during their drive south in torrential rain.
My father drove an Atkinson like that in the late 1970s running up to longbridge with car parts I think that had a rolls engine not certain of the engine HP I believe it was less than 250
@@Mr_b_yorkshire_farmer I'm looking for a 13spd instructions metal plate to go with my 13sd gear knob liberated from a R seiries MACK along with the hood ornament in service at Greenham Common. And a tinplate Cummins radiator badge. You can dream.
In the early 80s at 16 year old my 1st job was working as an apprentice truck mechanic at polar trucks Wombwell lane Barnsley (Now Tescos) all I did for 6 solid months wa# steam clean NCB trucks ready for MOT terrible filthy job and we had mine’s rescue vehicles regular I dare say the one you have Atkinson the worst NCB vehicles were land rovers all box sections underneath the warm high power spray would hit the box section then smash you in the face horrible I looked like I’d just come out of the pit soaking wet. 😮
@michaelparker5072 It's not about not 'liking' anything British it's just comparing British and Euro trucks for what they are. If Brit trucks were so marvelous why are they not around anymore?. I actually love old trucks of any make or year and glad they're around but let's not forget here that British trucks were junk...
@@Draxindustries1 that's as maybe, but is there any need for you to keep coming out with the sarcastic wit?,i personally wouldn't give you tuppence for a Volvo, but i wouldn't decry them
@@Draxindustries1 i have, owned them, worked on them, and driven them, that's why i have the opinion that i have, but to each their own,i certainly wouldn't decry someone for that being their choice of motor,i'd even go so far as to encourage someone to buy one,as both the marques you have mentioned are the ones that keep the lads busy in the workshop far more than the other makes combined, which is good news,as it keeps them in gainfull employment
