This ATR-72 managed by Utair crashed on the 2nd of April 2012 during take-off from Tyumen airport. Only 10 passengers from 43 people on board survived. The air crash happened because the captain chose not to do anti-ice and took off with wings covered in snow and ice.
This video is based on the official IAC report and respresents its audio version. mak-iac.org/upload/iblock/72a...
As a result of the investigation, the criminal case amounted to 130 books and led to the chief of the duty and the chief mechanic of Utair Airlines being jailed for 5 years, according to Article 263, part 3.
Answers to your most common questions:
Q: As per the National Geographic film on the ATR-72 Roslon Lake crash, these planes are so poor in the ice-favorable conditions that they were banned on the North of US.
A: There were no bans, but both American Eagle Arilines and Delta Connection stopped operating these planes in cold climates. After the above mentioned disaster, «Avions de Transport Regional» updated the structure of the wing and rolled out a modification with larger de-ice boots, making the aircraft suitable for operation in cold climate. We are not aware whether the Utair ATR-72 had larger boots fitted to its wings though.
Mistakes made in the film:
1. The actual alarm does not get rid of the ice by itself. It is what the de-ice boots are for.
2. Video states that the captain turned off the autopilot twice. In reality he has only done it once.
