I think one of the driving forces behind my purchases is “this will make me look/feel more hip/beautiful/interesting” and watching you do this (5 years late lol) is making me realize: you need nothing else to make you more beautiful or interesting. You just are. And maybe I am, too. :)
Hi there, love your no-spend content. August 1, 2022 is when I began my no spend and my rules and reasons are pretty similar to yours. I feel like I need to go cold turkey at this point because easing into it won't do me any good. I would suggest to others going through this as well to search on YT for palettes and products that you already have and you'll notice how many different looks each person comes up with. Also, prior to starting this, I got my skincare and haircare routine down pact. This prevents me from spending money on just trying products to see how they work. Looking at debt is so overwhelming that it's easy to just keep putting it off but at some point, it needs to be faced. I know I have a long road ahead of me but your content is so encouraging. The size of your makeup collection surprised me because, at the beginning of your channel, you sound overwhelmed about the amount of products that you have. That was a breath of fresh air because in the beauty community, when a youtuber said that, it's because she has a WHOLE ROOM full with makeup. I am also in a no-buy year and I just declutter/sell almost everything and now I just have one product of each category. When I saw your collection I identified myself with you because I had more or less the same amount of products and I felt SO oppressed with that quantity of makeup, it was too much!!! So I feel you. We are used to think that a collection needs to be huge but not: we just have one face, we don't need tons of makeup expiring in our drawers. Love your channel, greetings from Spain! ❤
Just heard you say “I have everything I need” and I find so much peace in that statement in my own life. It both reminds me of the value of what I have, and that my “needs” are mostly intrinsic and less than what society says they should be.
Hannah, That Dior pallet you want is a great discipline, for your no shopping year. There is alway going to be something shinning that calls our attention being makeup or stuff that’s a temporary bandage in what we really need to feed our soul. 💥
I would love to see your wardrobe. I have been downsizing my wardrobe and makeup for the past 2 years now and I still don’t think that I am where I need to be with either of them. Seeing other people’s success is very helpful and motivating. I just did a major clothing purge this Summer and am pretty excited about it. Things fit into my closet well and I have pulled out the things that I have not worn for years. I am trying very hard to be real with myself and snub out the fantasy self that I had built up an entire wardrobe for!

Yes to all the video suggestions! Also re the collection size comments......I think the problem is we are so used to seeing these huge, over bloated collections here on RU-vid, so a “normal” sized collection seems small, when in reality it’s just our perception is warped. I really enjoy your videos and I will embarking on a no buy from September 1st (Fall always feels like the new year to me!) so thank you for all the inspiration and I look forward to seeing your declutter videos :)

Hi Hannah ! I never leave any comment on Social Media but you really deserve one in my opinion. You are really inspiring and motivating. I find myself in your experience : I begun to watch beauty videos on youtube in 2015 and quickly I began to acquire more and more makeup every month. One year ago i tried to begin a low buy on makeup and beauty products, but replaced by buying clothes, handbags and planners. It was to much compared to my budget and I began to use my savings. I realised then that i needed to begin a no-buy on beauty products to use the enormous amount of products that I now have, on clothes, on handbags and on Craft material. I failed a little bit in August, by buying some crafts but at least I was able to save some money This month. I am also reading the Marie Kondo method and I already declutter my clothes and my books, even if I know it is not perfect and I wiil have to continue to try to declutter more. Such as you, I really want to achieve one no-buy year to change my way of consum and want products. I really have more makeup than you and I really need to go through everything. Thank you so much to share your journey through This no-buy. It really helps me to be motivated, to know that I can do it, and that I am not alone to have fallen into this ultra consumption. I really got what you said about having a small collection. I do several looks and almost never repeat the same eyeshadow look so people assume that I have a lot of things but I don’t! I have 4 eyeshadow palettes: 1 warm, 1 neutral, 1 rainbow and 1 metallic/warm. I love your content!

Yes to products you've hit pan on, yes to book club! , yes to how your no buy has affected your relationship with your boyfriend- is there less stress between you now that finances aren't overspent, and your plan on going into 2019? What rules are you going to follow going back into shopping? I'm hoping you go low buy as that is what I am working on going toward and you're a great role model in self control in spending. I didn't think I could go no buy so I've went low buy... doing fair. 1 mess up but overall, I am spending much less. Love your channel, Hannah! Love that you're a great example of how not to get pulled in by the beauty community! Oh and maybe what videos have you stopped watching that were a temptation? I just cleaned my list out the other day of some people that are hard for me to watch right now... are there certain videos you avoid? Great suggestions! I think I'm going to go on a strict budget after this. It might even be harder than the no-buy. I'll try to work these questions into some videos, but one interesting thing is that I haven't stopped watching anyone on youtube! Nothing is tempting enough to get me to break the no-buy. I want to be able to know about new things without buying them. So I'm still watching and developing my grit :)
For video ideas, maybe a GRWM for the photoshoot (and a couple shots of you at the shoot), GRWM for a night of tango (again with a shot of you actually tango-ing!), any declutter - I'd definitely like to see the kitchen like you mentioned, and how to get that volume in your hair at the roots (or really any hairstyle video). Lastly, definitely a closet tour :)
All great ideas! Thank you! Short note, for volume at the roots I spend a lot of time with my hair up in a high, loose bun. I think of it as "training" the roots to stick up. Sometimes I spray hairspray or rub mousse just into the roots at night, then immediately put it up on the very top of my head so that all the hairs are being swept upwards, then sleep in that bun. In the morning when I take it down it has lots of volume. It really helps that I stopped over-washing my hair years ago so I no longer get oily at the roots. I'll make a video about it, though!
I wonder if my hair is extra flat because 5 days a week it has to be slicked back into a ponytail with a baseball cap. I'll try putting product in my roots and sleeping with a top bun to see if it helps! I have so many samples to use up - I never use them because "I might need them for a travel trip". All 75 of them, dear? And you're still eyeing all the Sephora sample sets? smh.
I think your collection is a great size. Variety but not tons of things you "love" but never use. And watching you continue to enjoy and use what you have makes me so very happy. Because I've felt watching so many others I was somehow lacking. But just like you thinking critically about what I have I have what they have just not new. So I can totally relate to you on the clothes front. I was a shoe hoarder. I had a designated shoe closet! It was crazy. But when we bought our house and had to move it all I realized the amount of excess and it literally made me sick. After that I decluttered everything. I now have only 6 pairs of shoes and a capsule wardrobe. I have gotten rid of so much that I don't even need a dresser anymore. Everything fits on my very small rack in my very small closet(its an old house). But I am much happier and never think I have nothing to wear. So I say go for it!
wow, what a dramatic turnaround! Great story. I also reduced my shoes on this go-round. But I have more than 6 :) I have 6 pairs of tango shoes alone (but when I started the year, I had more than 20!)
@@HannahLouisePoston it really was. Laying it all out there to really see the amount of things was very awakening. Putting things into perspective was key. With the am out of space and time dedicated to clothes ect. Made it seem that those things were most important in my life while in reality family and experiences were my priority. It was truly eye opening
I think that was a really interesting point about the diversity of looks you can create with a small- for-youtube make up collection. I wonder if it comes from big youtubers with massive collections generally wearing the same style looks all the time. And when they do a look that's out of the box, it's normally just the color of their eyeshadow, where they use many new shades and palettes to create the look. Most of the time, they're just creating a warm smokey eye with "the next best" palette every time. I think you experiment more with placement - mainly blush. But you have also changed how you do your eyeshadow, like now you're into cool bronzes. I think those couple things make it seem like your collection is big (I thought so too).
I feel like I'm constantly getting bored with my looks and moving onto the next thing, but I've been able to do that all year just using what I already have! It's like you can experience your own private trends just inside your own collection.
I was one of those who was surprised and commented about creativity and resourcefulness! and absolutely. After listening to your response and spending the night thinking about it, I completely agree with your hypothesis. For years I think we have bought into the mentality that the only way to achieve a certain look is to buy that brand new thing specifically curated to achieve THAT look, without thinking about the fact that chances are we can dupe those vibes. I don't know, it's definitely a mentality I failed to acknowledge for a long time (and how I ended up with so much crap, tbh) yet funnily enough despite ALL I have I always end up leaning towards the exact same looks (glowy, bronzey skin, peachy cheeks and lips, and a bronze/gold/champagne/terracotta/rose gold eye.) lol. so to me watching you do these amazing things reignites that artistic spark in me (i do art as a day job, so i'm always in some way artistic, but apparently not when it comes to makeup) and i adore seeing how much you can do with less.
Mmmm your signature look sounds amazing :) I'm glad that you concur with my hypothesis! It's totally in the interests of beauty brands to convince us that certain looks require really specific products. But they don't! I was swatching my (relatively reasonably-sized, I guess) collection of lip products last night to prepare for my declutter series, and I have so many near-dupes even just among them. I had no idea.

This might not work together with your stash-shopping series, but I always enjoy project pan series. Your skincare empties have a pretty similar vibe, but if there’s some makeup category where you’re comfortable using the same one for a couple of months then I’d enjoy seeing updates and pictures of how long it’s taking to use up.
I'll keep thinking about this! For some reason project panning has no appeal for me, which is strange considering how much overlap there is between that community and my personal values and goals. I'm not excited by the prospect of using up my makeup. I mean, I'll use it up at a natural rate, and when it's gone it's gone, and that's fine, and I'm also somewhat satisfied that I got good use out of it. But I can't bring myself to eagerly look forward to the day it's gone, because that means...it's gone. For example, I'm going to completely pan that Kevin Aucoin powder one day, but I'm not looking forward to that day because it's my favorite powder, so I'll either have to live without it or buy it again, and neither prospect is appealing. BUT I shouldn't knock it until I try it! I will consider joining a panning project to see what it's really like :)
It's more about the satisfaction of completing something and knowing you got all the use out of something you really enjoyed using. Approaching it as a way to get rid of stuff you don't really like results in not finishing the project. You could declare your KA powder your panning project and take a nice picture of it every month so we can watch the progress with you! And then you'd have the positive feeling of achieving a goal and fully appreciating a loved object when it's done instead of just the negative feeling of running out of your favorite bronzer.
I’d love to see your sewing space at work, and I’d also love to see one of your weekly photo shoots. Your makeup collection is smaller than mine, but I also don’t buy high end skincare, nor do I have an extensive skincare routine. We do balance out a little in that way. At least that’s my justification 😂 I would also be interested in a video in which you talk through how you worked your way to this no-buy. You had mentioned that you had done smaller no-buys beforehand, and I’d love to know how long you were really mentally preparing to go all the way with it. I can tell within myself that if I really put a hard stop on makeup purchases, my spending would probably shift to another area... be it hobby purchases or clothes/shoes or home organizational purchases. I think the scope of my personal no-buy will have to be pretty wide, detailed, and specific. Jumping in on a whim will not be sustainable for me... I’ve been considering a project in the back of my mind for awhile, but really only strongly thinking about it for maybe five weeks. I’m still at a point where it feels daunting and depriving. I also don’t know if I want to baby step my way toward it, or do I wait until the start of the new year? I see the changes in your thinking and in your spirit, and I want that for myself. The personal discoveries you have shared all resonate with me and seem logical and desirable. Did it take you awhile to really shift into focus on starting your project? I’ve realized that framing it as a project is already a mental shift I’m starting to make, and an emphasis on making rather than buying clothes and accessories (which is something I can completely do!) may be a big part of my own project.
I am starting to think that a video about no-buys in general (who should do one, how to start one, advice, my own history, etc) could be good. Thank you so much for this input, I will definitely use it. I agree. The clothing “need” and joy is much stronger for me and harder to let go of!!! Fashion always gives me a pick me up and gives me a centering each day even more than makeup. But we still get stressed if there’s simply too much to organize and control let alone a waste to blow sooooo much money compared to men (to generalize hugely- I know that’s not always true but can be a generalization of one of the things we ladies spend/overspend way more than other groups on clothes!. One thing that helped me was to make an elaborate pinterest board of the fashion vibes I want for myself. I pinned tons of pictures of street looks and models, product shots, etc. Then when I was decluttering I would come across clothes and think "this is very THAT!" It turns out I already had a lot of clothes that go with the vibes of my pinterest dreams, I just wasn't necessarily thinking of them as my favorites b/c they were buried under other stuff. Since I decluttered, I've been wearing my "very that" clothes almost every day, and I feel better in my clothes than I did before. It's almost like I went shopping in my own closet, inspired by my own pinterest board. It depends on how much you have, but this might work for you!

I "Kondoed" my life and home about three years ago, but Im still decluttering pretty often, and with great joy :) I believe it´s a lifestyle, and I love that it brings awareness to so many things like consumerism, environmentalism, superficiality, relationships and so on. I would absolutely love to see a closet tour/final pass. I find the entire process of curating ones closet/clothing items fascinating, as someone who has always had very strong emotional attachments to certain clothing items (it's a process I'm still working on), so I always find it helpful to watch or hear about other peoples process. It would also be really interesting to watch a writer and book lover declutter their books, if you feel like filming that. I actually put the Robert Lustig book on hold at my local library and am picking it up tomorrow :)
I love reading so I would love to see your book declutter. And a closet tour. A kitchen declutter is something I would like to do on my end too because I have gadgets and things that I never use. My decision is made to go from low/no buy combo this year to a full makeup no buy next year with rules, which I’ve thought out now. Hair care and skin care has its own set of rules. I am planning on using my existing gift cards and points this year before December 31st. I’m interested in seeing how this new change for the new year will spill into other areas of my life as I’ve determined that I want less stuff!
Yes! Hanna's book club!! I've been trying to turn to books instead of sephora to get me through a bit of a stressful time. So far it's working fairly well and has me wanting to read more!
I'm not allowed to buy anything in those categories. For skincare, I'm allowed to buy replacements. But I am not allowed to buy a SINGLE item of clothing or any shoes or accessories at all for the whole year. Period, no exceptions. It's been hard (I love clothes, as I talked about in this video) and I can talk more about it in my closet tour if you like. But making a clear rule and sticking to it is the best medicine I've found.
I’ve tried replacing the shiseido cotton pads with muji, did not work well at all. I am looking to buy reusable ones though, that would save money in the long run
I finally subscribed to your channel after your duping the vibe of the Morphe vault video. I'd love to see more videos like that, and maybe a follow up makeup playtime where you use the colours you selected to maybe create a look that you want to get out of that colour scheme, or maybe just recreate a look that pretty much everyone who got that palette did all over RU-vid. I've been doing something similar for a long time, but in my mind, it was just because I didn't have the money to buy the real thing, and the end goal was always actually buying something new. I'm so glad for the many little events that made me snap out of it (an unexpected unintended no buy month to boot), and your channel was one of them. But nowadays, after having a good hour swatching all my eyeshadows all over my arm, I'd take a photo of that, to celebrate the great time that I had; and everytime I feel the need to buy something, I'd look back at my photos and I don't feel that way anymore. There's only very few things that are truly unique in this day and age, and there'll always things that are completely new to my collection... But I don't have to have them, and I don't need them. It takes so much to get to a point where I can even say that but I'm so glad I got here.
I’ve been doing a no-buy August. This last week has been the hardest. Your videos have been so helpful. It’s felt terrific to use up some products. I’m proud that I’ve stuck to the no-buy but I’m embarrassed to admit that I’ve researched products (online window shopped) practically every day this month & I have a few online carts ready for September 1st... which is not really in the sprit of the no-buy!
Dee Dee, congrats on sticking to your no-buy! Don't be embarrassed! I didn't stop spending tons of time window shopping on the Sephora website until the fourth or fifth month of my no-buy. It takes way longer than a month to change habits like that. The important thing is that you haven't broken your rules, and your successful no-buy is helping you grow in so many ways. If you feel like you slip immediately back into your old habits on Sept. 1, maybe you could take a week off, make some purchases, see how you feel, and then start another no-buy.
I get it now Hannah Louise! Anecdote time: I've been wanted to recreate an eyeshadow look with a mustard yellow which I thought I didn't have but in the Subculture Abh Palette, that I love but oxidized on me. And then I had playtime with that color and finally: the mustard yellow eyeshadow look worked. Lesson learned: sometimes you have to see all the facets of your possessions.

Really big collection of makeup here... 1.5 Alex drawers worth of eyeshadow palettes (roughly 50 palettes if you include drugstore trios and quads) and as I've been panning a full face mon-fri (weekends I can use whatever) since January I haven't gotten full use out of the "collection". It's really made me realize what I do want to reach for on my free weekends. It's made me want to declutter even more (I've gotten rid of probably 10 palettes already since January and countless lipsticks and other products), which wouldn't have been a thought a year ago when everything was precious to me.
I love palettes, that's one of the things I'm going to struggle with next year, I think. I irrationally want more eyeshadow palettes. But I also feel like my nine are too many, I forget about most of them most of the time!

Hannah, I hope you continue with YT next year as you embark on your first year after your NB Year. I'm already very intrigued. I'm also intrigued to see where I go with this. I've decluttered pretty seriously, but still have over 60 pans of blush. I can't believe I just stated that publicly. Obviously blush is my weakness. I know that I cannot use up all of these blushes in a lifetime, but after my last declutter I just couldn't let go of anymore. I think time will help me let go of more, and I hope it does. Yarn in another story. I'm a knitter, and I have so much yarn, because like blush is colorful and beautiful, and in the past I was not able to say no to a gorgeous hand dyed hank of yarn. I need to dedicate a day to getting all of it out and being true with myself about what i will and will not use. I'm also having a hard time with how I let go of things. Do I give them away ( my preferred method)? Do I sell them? I feel this shame that I spent all of this money, and I'm not trying to recoup any of my money. The result is I often freeze up and keep the decluttered things be it makeup or yarn in a box, the big box of indecision. Okay if you are still with me all the way at the end of my ramblings I would love to see a video on The Hacking of the American Mind. I will continue next year! The project will change a bit but it will still be my same channel :) I feel you about the shame and the freeze-up. I think it's a good plan to sell things that are EASY to sell (like if you can list them as a single lot), but don't stress about not recouping the money. Recouping your space is more important.
I remember thinking that you have more makeup than I do and that I wholeheartedly approved of you wanting to reduce by 1/3 :). That is a very interesting reflection on the comment you received and my only worry is that you will be come so popular here on RU-vid that you will be flooded with free beauty products in the mail, haha! Clothes are always trickier for me to navigate come Fall as I love fall fashion. Thank you for inspiring me to realize the waste of consumerism. You have unintentionally navigated me towards a zero-waste community/lifestyle that has been a tremendous change for me and one I feel so good about. I think about packaging and all the little extras even more so now. As Borat would say... “high five!” 🤗
I've been thinking a lot about zero-waste lately. I may mention that in an upcoming video or incorporate it into my project next year. I am planning to receive PR next year, it probably won't be much, but I will be RUTHLESS about what stays and what goes, which will probably make the review aspect of my channel pretty intense!
The Dior palette is lovely - I bought it - but rehomed it on Ebay after realising I was never going to use the 2 bronzey shades and couldn't justify it on the basis of just using the white and pink highlighters/blush. I've just depotted all my Fenty highlighters and Anastasia MR, SG and N palettes and put them into Z palettes. In my efforts to stop shopping, I've come to realise that closed palettes and compacts actually hinder restraint. Its so easy to forget what I have because the lids are shut on the palettes and thus be seduced by new releases. Now I have my highlighters on display in a Z palette, same with my Anastasia eyeshadows and I am using them! I can see them every day and am reminded constantly by how much I have to use. No more shopping. I had this lightbulb moment when I counted up my eyeshadows - an eyewatering 155 (this includes pans and pots). I was just aghast. So, the time has arrived to take drastic action. I've also taken up your suggestion of make up play time in the evening, which again reminds me of how much I have and also, what a really great makeup collection I already have.
HI Larissa! I'm so glad you are having some makeup playtime :) I never though about depotting my Fenty highlighters. I've considered depotting as many face products as I can next year and moving to a mostly z-palette life like you describe. I can totally imagine that it helps you to see what you have and get more use out of your products!
I would love to see a kitchen declutter and final clothes declutter! I'm working on downsizing my everything in preparation for an upcoming international move so the inspiration would be helpful!
Can you do a whats in my bag video? I think those videos say a lot about a person and I'd love to see what you carry on an every day basis. Also, I plan on doing a makeup, skincare and hair product no buy for 2019. I'm so nervous, but your videos show me that it is possible!
What's in my bag would be really interesting, because I pretty much unpack my bag at the end of every day and pack it again in the morning with the things I need! But it's often a lot of the same things. Congrats on your no-by plan! You can do it!
Yes I’m down for declutters! I have been doing this recently as of 6 weeks ago I was a massive shopaholic (hence my name!) but I’ve been watching you and others and I’ve decided I’m sick of giving my hard earned money to other people via my excessive spending. I too have bought things to then give them away in declutters but it makes me feel so much lighter mentally.
I agree about the lightness. But I'm hoping this will be the last time I buy so much that I have to go through tons of massive declutters. I used to buy things even if I wasn't sure I would like them, and I'd tell myself that if it didn't work out I could just give it to my sister. That was such a bad headspace to be in (and she didn't always want the things!)
I love your videos, Hannah! I will be forced into a no-buy month in September due to poor financial planning and I hope to get my shopping under control. I recently bought the Jaclyn Hill Bling Boss palette so I should be able to entertain myself awhile, especially given that I rarely use more than two eyeshadow colors at a time. I would love to see your declutter series...even the books but especially the Kitchen and Clothes because that's what I need to work on too. I thought your collection was about what I expected and kind of similar to what I have myself. Some viewers might be comparing with collection videos we watch from creators who have been doing this a long time or are getting loads of P.R. I was also thinking, maybe you had more skincare in your bathroom, and was wondering if you wear perfumes. I am lucky to have a large bathroom so everything is there, and I love fragrances so I have a tray of perfumes on my vanity. I am probably even more of a collector of bath/body stuff than I am of makeup. I would love to see what you would have gotten and how much you would have spent if you bought everything you would have in another time but didn't buy this year. I sometimes reward myself by saying if "I don't buy this, I will put some of the money I would have spent on it in a jar and save it for a treat." Then I might get one nice splurge item instead of several smaller impulse purchases...if I don't end up handing it all over to my teenage daughter. For now, I am still doing well on my August no-buy, and I found my lost lip balm under the couch. I hope you have a great rest of the week. And you look so beautiful here too.
I was excited to see a new video from you this morning! Is there a video where you show us all of your categories? I am making my own rules and my categories list - and I have quite a few categories!! I'm also curious about your decision to purchase less expensive items. I can see myself justifying more expensive items if I only have one in a category. For example, I have a lot of facial oils and as I use them, I am deciding which one I would repurchase when I will only have one to use - and I could see myself buying a $150 product!
I haven't listed all of my categories in a video, but in my morning skincare and evening skincare routines they are typed out in the drop-down box. So if you add those two lists together, you have all of my skincare categories. It is a lot! I've held fast to my pricey products in some categories (vitamin c serum, retinol oil, etc) but I realized I was spending way too much on lower-stakes products like cleansers and moisturizers. That's where I've been cutting costs.

I'm looking forward to the videos you're planning! I have attempted Marie Kondo but I think my heart wasn't fully in it -- and I only got through clothes. Your wardrobe declutter sounds pretty intense and obviously you made the right call not filming it. I think a retrospective video on the process would still be very interesting. And if you do a book club, I'd vote for another Le Guin novel; she's my favorite fiction writer. :)(of course do whatever you want, but I do highly recommend reading more Le Guin at the very least!)

The beauty community began talking about the sale and o got excited since the item I wanted is from a brand that never has any sales and is expensive. But i found, the sale was only in the US, so therefore had no reason to buy the perfume. But I was still wanting desperately to purchase it regardless. I needed to back away and really figure out the whys and hows regarding this potential purchase. I havent gone back on to the sephora site since, and I think that's helped. I've also been rewatching all of your videos Hannah, and its helped to ground me again. ❤
CONGRATULATIONS on your resistance. Just wait it out. You can get it someday if you still want it, but you don't need it now! The pain and urgency will fade, they always do!

ok I have to stop the video and have to comment now. When I saw your collection video I definitely thougt that the size is bigger and full of well done selected beautifiul different things. When I realized that my amount of Make Up is much more I felt very mindblowing because I thought mine is not so big. This particuliar video let me change my entire spending habbits of beauty stuff. I realized that everyone dont need such an amount of Make Up to be creative, goodlooking and happy. I’d be very interested to see products like your Kevyn Aucoin Neo Highlighter in Sahara or the Perricone MD lip gloss that might be harder to go through, or at least take longer than something like skincare, that you think you might actually use all the way up but the end of the year! (And anything and everything about books-they’re magical.)

the skincare on my vanity in my office tour/collection video is all of it, except for my cleansers and masks which I keep in the bathroom! The masks are being whittled way down at this point, too.
I had so may thoughts lol: 1. I ended up buying from Sephora during the sale blergh. Sales are such a trigger for me! But I didn't break my no buy. I finally bought C-Firma (and Protini). 2. I think at the top of 2019, I'm going to seriously Konmari, as my no buy will be over and I'll be adding things from Xmas and my birthday. I'm looking forward to it. 3. I thought your collection was surprisingly small! I think mine is much larger (although my skincare is pretty bare bones).
Congrats on not breaking your no-buy during the sale though! That's still a big step. I technically need brush cleaner but I'm stubbornly not buying it even though the sale is on...I'm trying to extend my streak of not placing a Sephora order :) At the rate I'm going (one category every few months, LOL), I'll still be Kondoing my house in 2019, so we can do it together!
I've been lurking here for months, but this month (September) I'm jumping in. I just moved to New York, and the cost of moving on top of leaving my more stable income job behind to exclusively work on freelance projects means I need to be more strict with myself and my budget. My no-buy includes beauty and skincare, but also takeout (damn you, Seamless), random Duane Reade purchases, and anything online (also damn you, Paypal!); if it's essential, I can leave the house and go buy it in person (and then make a note in my phone of what it was, why it was so essential, and how much it cost, so I'm not at a loss looking at my bank statement at the end of the month. Not included will be cultural events, gifts, meals out with friends, and gym classes. I foresee a lot of planning ahead and packing snacks. Wish me luck!

I've lived there just for periods of a few months at a time for work, and it felt like just walking down the street would cause money to fly surreptitiously out of my pockets and away. But it's also magical, huge congratulations on having moved there! Your no-buy sounds great. Are you able to cook? When it comes to cost of living, cooking three huge meals a week and eating leftovers for every meal has changed the game in my household.
Hi back! I do cook, I actually generate recipes as part of my freelance life. It's so easy here to be out late and come home exhausted and hungry and craving pizza, so meal prep is going to be a big part of this new budget. Luckily I'm pretty sure New York is worth it :)
I just went through my singles which consist of singles I picked out and de potted shadows and the amount of matte cream shades or skin color Browns was astounding. I don’t even use those. I put some in an abh pallet that I got when I purchased some singles and all the warm browns and orange and rust colors I don’t ever use and put it in a small pallet. I rearranged the rest of my singles and I feel like I just got 4 new pallets.
