Record year for migration though, has alot more impact on the housing crisis than this.

Other than many of the infrastructure projects the Navy's submarine and ship programs are totally out of control. I've spoken to some other engineers about some of this because we've seen a fair amount of this sort of price gouging during the mining boom and some of that was pretty bad, but this stuff is totally out of control. Here's a simple example. The Navies new Arafura-class offshore patrol vessels are $300 million each and that's more than 10x what the Armidale-class boats they are replacing cost. You'd expect some increases due to inflation and that they are bigger, but 10x the cost is ridiculous. Also the new frigates are more than 3x the cost the British are paying for the same ship. There's no explanation other than we are being ripped off. I strong suspect we'll find out that these issues with external consultants has a lot to do with it. What most people don't realise is that these consultants are NOT there to provide solutions. Their obligation is to their employer and their employer's profit. I think Dan Andrews has simply said "We've had ENOUGH and are not going to be ripped off any more."

And what's the point when the winner is 0.002 seconds faster than the second place runner? Or whatever the sport?

I have seen lots of people get kicked off projects for the simple fact they got the job done or wanted to get it done instead of joining in the gouging.

@@sourabhthakur6064 I think you will find that most participating nations do pay something in these large events. Its might not be direct as in here's the entry fee for this person or team in that event but there's fees for belonging to organisations. The real question in this is what was costing so much. And so you know right now we have massive issues with large projects and its not just government projects but also military and private sector projects. FYI - I am an engineer and have personal experience with some of what's going on.

American here. It dawned on me that those 18-34-year-olds really may not care about or want to glorify the colonial pasts of their countries since it's "for the history books" as the saying goes. Regarding money, it reminded me of the controversy here in the States about the cost of sports venues and the drain on taxpayers. Then there's the human rights thing. I am aware of China and Saudi Arabia and I can't criticize countries like that since the USA is so polarized and our governments on the federal and state level are so dysfunctional.

As a 40+ yr brit, I'm extremely proud of our colonial past. It was a brutal period that didn't live by rules we enjoy today yet they thrived . Also the amount of good the empire did never gets talked about. Most world was savage tribal folk who only live the way they do now because of colonialism. But that shames them so they attack our culture. One day UK empire will get the applaud that Greek and Roman empire enjoy. And rightly so.

I like the idea of hosting The Olimpics in Greece permanently. All participant Nations pay a yearly fee to mantain and manage the infrastructures instead of building useless infrastructures across the globe every 4 years. It surely will help Greece economy and other Nations wont have to go bankrupt to host the Olimpics. Not to mention it probably will put a dent in all the corruption and shady deals that usually happen during the choice process for the allocation of the hosting nation.

How many island countries with a total population of 26 million and much fewer taxpayers can afford to host football world cup, commonwealth games and Olympics? No other countries wanted those events for good financial reasons.

Really think the commonwealth games would be the best way to do it? That’s a dumb analysis, the fact they canceled it shows it’s more of act of lack profit as opposed to sports washing. A sports washing nation would host it with little regard of death and cost. What are you on? 😂
