After heavy snowfall steep mountains are not safe for 24 to 48 hrs until the new snow melds with old pack. This should not have happened; KT should have been closed 24 more hours and only opened after blasting. However that whole Olympic valley has always had a high Avalanche history. I remember back in the 80s some severe avalanches. Heads up. In the spring time danger becomes very high as well. Condolences to the family

Yes … not familiar with this area but working at Alta, UT for many years know a bit about avalanche control and clearly this shouldn’t have happened.

kt almost never slides. it's easy to scout, easy to get to, easy to blast if they need to. this slid right under the liftline. it's not that steep. it's not that high, either. on a clear day you can see the fingers from the bars at the base. it was low tide and they got a heavy snowfall. what can be more important than the volume of snow is the wind direction, intensity, and its loading characteristics. there's an investigation to be done here. way too early to say anything and impossible to call an area in which thousands of people ski with no avvy training ski unharmed virtually every storm "too dangerous." bigger storms have been skied on that face for decades. they dig a pit and test after every major snowfall and assess the risk. there will be an investigation and if there was wrongdoing people will be hopefully be accountable. but kt will continue to be skied. and it should. it's the one of the most famous chairlifts in north america. skier triggered slides there are very rare. like anything, we should be deliberate and investigate what happened and then further our understanding of the risk involved. but the knee jerk reaction shouldn't be to close the lift for 48 hours after every snowfall. they'd never open the mountain on a big year. people wouldn't travel from all over the world to watch it snow.

@@wasabiginger6993 slides at kt are quite rare. we will glean more information in the coming days. there are parts of the resort which will remain closed for several days for avalanche mitigation. this is usually a relatively safe area because it's easy to patrol and manage and it's not incredibly steep. from what i can tell they were basically under the liftline.

Why did they open the slopes knowing how dangerous the piling snow is and that an avalanche could happen?!!! That’s risky and a terrible decision.

$$$$$$$$$ The owners of Squaw are as greedy as you will find in the business: lift tickets are $400, they gutted the staff and automated most services. Yet the deep pocket bay area dbags just keep jamming up 80 to spend 2 days in traffic (Friday going up and Sunday going down) to spend 1 day on the slopes. Greed --- just greed!

You need to do research ski area is there to do business and obviously if they did it right we would have a world that you wouldn’t recognize what I say right and wrong with an avalanche. This is not a very steep part of Squaw.

👀 Avalanches are a normal occurrence in the Sierras. Sierra Avalanche Center reported this day as "A strong winter storm will enter our area today bringing high intensity snowfall and gale force winds. Avalanche danger will quickly increase today with avalanches occurring in a variety of areas by this afternoon. A period of high avalanche danger may occur in the early evening hours." I'm still waiting for any of these Tahoe resorts I've worked a decade for seasonally to tell me my start date and working schedule this season, and it's already fucking January, so maybe you have a point about mismanaged mountains but it doesn't seem relevant as Patrol reportedly opened the trails and the lifts ran. That's how it goes sometimes 🦅

Sierra Nevada avalanches that claim victims are pretty rare, but there was that awful one at Alpine Meadows in 1982. That put a real respect for deep mountain snow in me. Reading the story about it in National Geographic Magazine seemed to affect my ski locale decisions. I stuck to Boreal (downhill) and Royal Gorge (cross country) because they are close to I-80. I couldn't imagine an avalanche daring to happen in plain view of motorists driving on the freeway, for one. For another, if a rogue squall or worse broke out, I felt that I had a better chance to make it back home to the the Reno area than if I had to drive down out of the more prestigious ski areas. My skiing days are over already because polymyositis has left my arms too weak and painful, my leg balance not reliable. So I guess my crazy plan worked! 🙃

@shelmstedt
@shelmstedt 6 месяцев назад
@@richardpark3054 yes, the ski resort has the responsibility to do avalanche control. It cost Palisades too much and therefore they are not doing it to the required level. Palisades needs to advertise to wear avalanche protection if they feel they are not responsible for it. Customers need to be warned. Again, this is not backcountry skiing. Vail just calculates one death every 5 year is not worth the money to spend on avalanche control.

There’s an entire protocol for mountain blasting in the morning and then sending out ski patrol after blasting to check certain problematic areas, and possibly blast more, only opening after safety was established. They also have to blast just to keep the road open following heavy storms. I remember busing our ski club in to the old name resort and everyone had to be silent in 82-83 because of avalanches danger was so high in that corridor and on the main mountain, you could literally set off an event just because everyone was loud…
