Be sure you’re getting enough folate (B9) to avoid a vitamin B9 deficiency.
Timestamps:
0:00 Take folate instead of folic acid: Here’s why
0:42 Vitamin B9 deficiencies are common
1:28 A B9 deficiency can cause these major health problems
In this video, I explain the importance of vitamin B9. There are a couple of different versions. One is folate and one is folic acid. I recommend folate because it’s the natural version, whereas folic acid is synthetic.
Vitamin B9 is important in chemical reactions in your body, especially turning genes on or off, as well as DNA repair. You could end up with a lot of body issues if you have a B9 deficiency.
B9 deficiencies are common. The enzyme methylfolate, which converts folate or folic acid to its active form, often causes gene mutations on the MTHFR gene in different groups of people. Some mutations cause no problems; others cause huge issues with the absorption of folate or folic acid. In fact, thirty to fifty percent of the population has some form of these mutations; out of this population, people have varying abilities to absorb folate.
B9 deficiency can cause the following:
● High homocysteine, increasing your risk of stroke, heart attack, or hearing loss
● Increased risk of cancer
● Increased risk of heart disease
● Infertility
● Migraines
● Depression
● Can’t detox
● Problems with neurotransmitters
If you’re taking or exposed to folic acid, the synthetic version, and you have a problem with the mutated gene MTHFR, you could develop health problems.
You might be exposed to folic acid if you’re eating grains that have been fortified with it or if it is in the vitamins you’re taking.
You get folate from dark leafy greens; also from organ meats, although very few people consume them, let alone eat enough vegetables.
If you want to know if you have trouble with the MTHFR gene, take the 23 and Me test online. If you have a problem, then you want to take the version of B9 called methylfolate. It’s easy to find. Also, take a high-quality B12 too, called methylcobalamin. Avoid the synthetic variety.
You can tell why getting enough folate is important to prevent a B9 deficiency.

Many doctors prescribe folic acid to pregnant women, but to know it's synthetic, and folate is the natural one is definitely an eye open and extremely valuable information provided by Dr. Berg and maybe a life saver.

Problem here: all the supplements on the web that label "Methylfolate" are just "Folate" when you look at the list of ingredients. Where can we buy a supplement that just says "1000 mcg MethylFolate"?

Yeah I was one of those mothers in the 90s he was told to take folic acid when I was pregnant. But then fast forward 25 years later I found out that I am 677MTHFR my body can’t recognize folic acid. Thankfully my daughter was born fine I mean yeah she’s got problems here and there but they’re not devastating. But I’m just wondering could they have been nonexistent if I was taking folate instead there was no Internet early 90s so I didn’t know any better.

For years I’ve had low hemoglobin that didn’t get better with iron infusions, vitamin b12 injections, prescription synthetic folic acid and lots of red meat and even liver. I also had lots of trouble putting on weight because of low appetite, on top of that insomnia and adhd symptoms.. They even prescribed EPO injections (also knows as doping) to stimulate my body to produce red blood cells. It was either that, or blood transfusions, but my hemoglobin was just a fraction too high for blood transfusion.. But even the EPO injections didn’t quite work, it did do something, but very little, so I quit those too. Then I started taking methylfolate and this for me has been the KEY for succes. Every symptom improves immediately, my mood, sleep, appetite, my hormonal health. My body finally produces red blood cells without any need for EPO injections or iron infusions. I know it’s the folate because when I run out, or simply forget to re order, I get my symptoms back. It makes me feel like a normal human.

I have a heterozygous C677T mutation, making me ~30% less affective at methylating B9. I might be wording that wrong - sorry. But I was adamant about avoiding folic acid long before I found out about the mutation. I’m glad you are talking about it. Few doctors understand the difference: at least in my experiences. I manage to stay just above deficient in B9. Much respect and admiration to you and my metabolic wellness doctor.

Now, I am suffering for it, I realize. My grandmother had Alzheimer’s and my Mother died of intestinal cancer. Both, ate lots of grains and sugar. When my middle son was born he had Supra ventricular tachycardia… bad electrical system of the heart…. Probably, because I was not getting enough natural folate and he and I both, did not have enough B12. All of this, most likely because of MTHFR gene. Just because you tolerate the synthetic vitamins, doesn’t mean you should.

Just recently saw a paper about Brazil deciding to fortify all their grains w/ iron and folic acid and then changing their minds after seeing the disastrous effects. They did it pretty recently so they have better numbers than we do here in the states. Shows the general populations health decline pretty quickly after introducing the fortification. So they are deciding to pull it. Wish they would do that here. Pretty illinformed decision who ever came up with treating the entire population with iron filings and folic acid. Not to mention flouride as well.

Worst part about methylfolate is that people and advisers dont know anything about it, they just wrote that mthfr is needed for synthesis of methylfolate and they are teaching everyone that if you have mthfr then you need to suplement this nutrient. I really encourage to look at study that showed that 3mg of riboflavin lowered homocysteine by 40% in people with mthfr and this is really key nutrient for those people not methylfolate. Methlfolate is methylated god knows how many times everyday and dose that you get from suplement will be transformed into thf in like 1-2 hours after taking and then it isnt different than folic acid that is demonized. In the end i want to write that b2 is key nutrient because it speeds up mthfr and if you got polimorfism then your enzyme need more b2 and even more facinating is fact that such low dose as 3mg will be enough. If you dont notice any improvement in blood homocysteine or your mood then mthfr isnt your problem and you need to dig more into your biochemistry.

I recommend 100g of fried or steamed (grassfed) beef liver every day. Covers so many vitamins and minerals, it's just a true super food.

While I agree on its benefits. Life has a balance. It would highly increase the sodium levels in the body. Therefore, high water intake and potassium rich foods are advised to be taken when having liver. Additionally to prevent uric acid Buid up, I have been taking green apples and celery water after having the liver. I had undiagnosed issues with fatique and indigestion for years that I was able to cope with only with having liver, and consumption of black radish, and by balancing each food I take as I mentioned earlier.

Thru IVF I found out I have MTHFR gene. I have two variants to the mutation. I do no absorb folate from food period! No matter how much green leafy veggies or liver I eat as my body does not Methylate... Therefore I have to take a methyl form of folate. Prescribed to me by my naturopath as my GP had no idea what the MTHFR gene was and prescribed me folic acid. Thanks to my IVF doctor who has a brain I've been able to restore my body what it was lacking. And boy do I feel good.

Hi, hope my English will be okay but I'm from the Netherlands and I've got something to share: I'm suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and I need to take methotrexate once a week. For the side effects I need to take 10 mg (!!!!!!) of folic accid 24 hours later. When I started with keto I stopped with the MTX to see if the way of eating keto would effect my arthritis in a good way. But after 7 weeks in horrible agony (couldn't hardly doing my job as a pedicure anymore) I started again with the MTX because the pain was unbearable... Do you recommend taking this huge amount of folic acid in that natural supplement or have you got any other advice for me? Thank you!

I am taking folinic acid as it has activated b6 and i sunq micro doses of b12 and a very very low dose and my levels are top of the range along with being a meat eater. I was considering using methyl folate thinking maybe I need to take that instead of folinic acid as I assumed/still not sure if it’s helping my MTHFR gene mutation (tested) or if I should not be touching any folate folic acid and folinic acid as I can’t work Out entirely what’s going on here… if I used methyl folate it’s pure methyl folate…. But I still need my other b6 actIvated and I also am not taking any of the other b vitamins plus sometimes miss my b12 by a week…. Any suggestions ?

Folate : is the natural source of folic acid which is found & Absorbed directly from "food" Folic acid : is the synthetic form of folate which is produced in the lab. ( Chemically ) Metafolin ( Methyle Folate ) : is the Active form of folic acid ( L - 5 Methyl tetra Hydro folate Reductase ) which is Directly absorbed & there is "No need For Metabolism"

Reductase is the name given to the enzyme that reduces the various forms of folate (including folic acid) into the “active” form of folate. It is called active because the next enzyme on the assembly line (folate cycle) needs it to already be in that form to do its job. The next enzyme is MTR. It is bad for it to be over active, for example, because this can lead to rapid dna production (increased risk of aggressive cancer development). Many chemo drugs address this. Our bodies have a chemical switch that deactivates MTR if it seems to be running out of control. I suspect the higher dose (think compressed file) folic acid can stall out the MTR. I am still looking for the research. Variants in MTRR, the reductase that breaks up cyanocobalamin into methylcobalamin can effect the process too. Methylcobalamin is the coenzyme for MTR. Think of it as the electricity MTR runs on. The idea with eating the digestive organs of ruminant animals is that they, in chewing the cud, have already broken down the vitamins into their active forms. I absolutely hate liver but forced myself to try it for four weeks( for science!) and found no difference from just eating eggs with spinach or chard and broccoli for breakfast and lentil and quinoa soup for lunch. I have found that including one jello cup (for the glycine so must be animal based) as well helps with the neuropathy. But that could be related to a separate problem variant of mine that is neuroinhibiter related and very rare. I really appreciate this video because it states an overview of the subject quickly and undramatically. Many (as in I haven’t personally met one yet) doctors don’t even know there is a difference between the two forms of folate.
