Today I’m going to cover the seven warning signs of a vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 is an important vitamin involved in making DNA, myelin sheath, and red blood cells.
It’s important to know how to identify vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms because if you are deficient in vitamin B12, you could experience irreversible damage to your nervous system.
When you’re looking for a vitamin B12 supplement, there are two kinds, a natural version, and a synthetic version. Always take the natural version, which is called methylcobalamin. But, it’s really best to get vitamin B12 from the diet.
The main cause of a vitamin B12 deficiency is not a lack of vitamin B12 in the diet. It has to do with malabsorption-the person can’t absorb vitamin B12.
Conditions that can block the absorption of B12:
• Atrophy of the stomach
• Hydrochloric acid deficiency
• Gastritis
• Ulcers
• Celiac
• Chrohn’s disease
• Irritable bowel syndrome
Foods rich in vitamin B12:
• Animal liver and kidneys
• Clams (and other seafood)
• Sardines
• Beef
• Chicken
• Fish
• Fermented products (kimchi, sauerkraut, and fermented dairy)
• Insects
• Nutritional yeast (non-fortified)
7 warning signs of a vitamin B12 deficiency:
1. Pale skin
2. Constant fatigue
3. Mouth problems
4. Cognitive issues
5. Nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy)
6. Blurred vision
7. Fast pulse rate

My aunt was diagnosed with epilepsy until some village doctor (in rural Serbia) told her to check her vitamin B12 level...there was no epilepsy in fact, just serious B12 and B vitamins deficiencies.

I think B12 deficiency can make you have symptoms of stroke, too and/or be linked with migraines. Apparently I was having atypical migraines that mimicked stroke. Nothing could be found on numerous CT scans or MRI. Finally the last doctor said could be 1 of 3 things: atypical migraine (I found out later that 2 relatives on my father's side had migraines), seizures or narrowed blood vessels. But I experienced numbness and inability to think or speak correctly. Scary when it happens. So now I try to supplement with at least 1 B complex capsule every day. It seems to be helping me. Not giving anyone medical advice, just sharing my experiences. I'm 46 and never had migraines before 1 or 2 years ago. Regular headaches sometimes, of course. Probably linked with perimenopause (the migraines, more severe headaches), but that's just a guess.
@MMimi-mg4qt
@MMimi-mg4qt 2 года назад
@@w1975b Good luck, I hope you get better. Try not to focus on perimenopouse much but rather if you made some lifestyle changes that could be the cause. I recently discovered that coffee will increase headaches as it shrinks blood vessels in the brain contrary to popular belief. Tested it and it's true: headache went from mild to horrible. Stopped drinking it and headaches are gone. Try taking two glasses of water - that works too for headaches.

I have never been so confused in my life and filled with negativity. I am 30 and this explains why I have been in so much depression, anxiety, having paranoia about ageing and death and constant cynicism towards everything around me. @rajat_vl
@rajat_vl Год назад
@@user-vr9cb1hm2h The anxiety was super bad on three occasions in the month of April. The depression ( I don't even like using that word) is super uneven. I was feeling that everything is senseless and what's the point of doing everything or impressing anyone as it's all gonna end anyway, and then I was losing excitement and motivation. The past 2 days I have found a lot of clarity on my thoughts by constantly talking about it with various people, and making an effort to sit with my family members and talk about the same concerns that bother me much but with honesty. It started to get more clear and now I also answered some internal questions by gaining insights on them. Got 2 B12 injections also helped I believe.
@rb98769

@@rajat_vl Have you figured out the reason your B12 levels dropped so much? That's important to know because it's not typical for your age unless you're vegan or had gastric bypass surgery, or some similar procedure. It could be something to do with your stomach or small intestine. The injections helped me a lot as well. I was getting the worst anxiety I ever had in my life, a seemingly permanent state of dizziness whenever I walked around, and leg weakness/paresthesia. The injections pretty much gave me my life back.

@@touro603 Your body doesn’t need much B12, but very often the absorption isn’t so good. And if there are problems with intrinsic factor you can receive injections or daily take high dose B12 direct sticks (powder) or sublingual tablets. Then a small portion of the B12 goes straight through the mucous membranes into the blood, a little in the mouth and a little in the small intestine. When I have severe symptoms, I actually suck 1000 micrograms twice a day plus speaking with god and commanding symptoms to go.

The fewer ingredients your food has, the healthier you will be. The more pronouncable the ingredients are is also a good clue to their nutritional value. When I was younger I drank heavily and smoked a lot of weed. But I've always avoided processed foods and aimed for nutritional foods so I managed to avoid the long term effects of drinking. Well, that plus a daily milk thistle capsule to help my previously overworked liver. I also never went for all the health advice about low fat, sugar free, low-salt, margarine-instead-of-butter hype. As long as you eat moderate amounts of high quality food, you can avoid most health issues. Butter doesn't cause heart disease in appropriate amounts but even a little bit of margarine certainly does cause heart disease, for example.

It's very easy to make your own toothpaste. Take one tablespoon of coconut oil and mix it with enough bicarbonate of soda to make a paste. It will solidify overnight. It won't foam like commercial toothpaste does but it makes a really good job of cleaning your teeth. The coconut oil is also anti-bacterial. Thus I have come to participate in the healing of incredibly complex vestibular conditions, migraines, neuritis, etc. That you have not seen it does not mean that it does not heal. I have seen it.

I had all of this & more for years. Every GP & specialist I saw insisted there was nothing wrong. They assumed because I was over 50 & female - I was too daft to recognize common symptoms of aging & menopause. I should mention I’m a retired army colonel, not given to whining. But I could no longer drive, had excruciating back & hip pain, stabbing limb pain, numbness, vision & hearing loss, severe anxiety, heat intolerance. Once a competitive runner, I now struggled to walk up stairs without losing my breath or even around the block without losing my balance. I was given anti-depressants. Seriously. It was finally a psych I saw for the severe cognitive loss who insisted it was all related. He ran comprehensive bloods & found all the micronutrient deficiencies, esp B12 & low ATP. It’s an agonizing slow recovery & I’m on the hunt for the cause. In the meantime I’ve learned to self-inject my B12.

@@Sc-dd6hb Very glad your dad is being treated. It can lead to a dementia diagnosis & go unrecognized in the elderly. It’s really a shame - it’s cheap & easy to treat. I suspect the focus on pharmaceuticals may be to blame - no profit in vitamin treatments. The testing is not optimal either. I’ve been told to treat if symptoms are present. B12 is water soluble & the excess is excreted. So unless there is an allergy issue, it’s very safe.

I was lucky that a conversation with my doctor led to my pernicious anemia diagnosis and immediate B12 supplement treatment. I told him about my propensity to trip over myself, my tiredness and the tingling in my toes, which led to him asking me a series of questions and sending me for an immediate blood test. You know somethings up when you get a call from your doctor wanting to see you immediately. My B12 levels weren’t even on the charts. He started me on B12 injections and sent me for the test which found intrinsic factor to be the problem. My lasting symptom is damage to the nerves in the toes of my left foot. The chronic lower back pain I used to just “live with” took a few years to disappear completely. One day I just realized I had excess Panadols because I didn’t have the need to take them. Last year I switched from monthly injections (could only get cyancobalamin locally) to daily sublingual methylcobalamin tablets which I have a 3month supply standing order online. When I had first mentioned the symptoms I was having to my dads doctor after one of his checkups, the doctor put it down to signs of aging, he is a relative and about the same age as me. Thank God it didn’t end there.

So one day I turned up into the hospital because I didnt know what to do. The doctors there didnt know either at first, but one young doctor came up with the idea. They analyzed my blood and bang, that was it. Turns out that I lack the enzym to crack the vitamin up, so my body cant absorb it from the food. I am getting now injections. I think people should also be informed about dangers of overdose and excess levels of vitamins! Many people start taking supplements without knowing their current levels, without doing blood work to understand how much and to what extent supplements affect their blood values until it is too late. My mother's memory was affected as well as permanent chronic pain to her shoulder and arm from a statin. When it was ceased her memory was fine. She was given the statin due to a stroke and not her diet!

Are you saying it is causing cancer? It is helping to keep you from getting cancer? I haven't seen.

You are amazing! I have b12 deficiency for since I was a teenager. I have to pay attention in order to get the right amount of vitamin b12 in my system, else I have experienced memory loss, nerve damage as in my limbs going numb and painful, fatigue and fast pulse rate. Please everyone, take care of your vitamin b12 level, always do a yearly blood test. Dr. Eric Berg, you are a lifesaver, I could watch your videos all day!

I used to get a lot of mouth ulcers when I would binge drink frequently, but I'm guessing it was more down to my inflammatory markers being up rather than not digesting B12 properly.

It's usually not a precise one cause/one symptom ratio. The alcohol is irritating to the mucous membrane in your mouth, and I believe chronic alcohol use can lead to all kinds of vitamin and mineral deficiencies, which can lead to immune problems, inflammation, etc. Them throw in any direct causes from any specific deficiencies and your chances of having mouth ulcers goes up. Same way that alcohol use may only slightly increase the chances of esophageal cancer, as well as smoking, alone, only increases those chances slightly. But drinkers who also smoke have exponentially higher odds of esophageal cancer by combining the two risk factors.

Alcohol turns to sugar & sugar, stress & caffeine can COMPLETELY deplete or WASH AWAY your B & C VITAMINS because they're WATER soluble not FAT soluble meaning they don't STORE in the body & we need to CONSTANTLY replenish them. BOTH of these deficiencies of ALL the B vitamins & vitamin C can create mouth, tongue & gum sores & ulcers. You can also swish with some warm sea salt water too.

please be careful. Pellagra is a condition that can be associated with advanced alcoholism. one of the symptoms is mouth ulcers, inflammation of the oral mucosa and other mucosal tissues (like in the digestive system). advanced cases can lead to dementia. it's related to vitamin B3 (niacin) deficiency. i hope this is not the case for you, but be blessed and be well!
