Gene polymorphisms, small changes in an organism's DNA sequence, can affect the absorption and metabolism of nutrients, including vitamins and minerals. A polymorphism in the MTHFR gene that decreases enzyme activity leads to inefficient folate metabolism. People with the modified version of this gene might benefit from supplementing with methylated forms of B vitamins. In this clip, Tim Ferriss discusses his MTHFR status and his experience with vitamin supplementation.

I just got my life back!!!!!!!!!! methylfolate, methylated b12 and NAC.... I felt so ill for 6 years, mental health severely declined with chronic never ending crushing anxiety...almost thought of packing it in it was so bad. It's day 6 and I broke down in tears today because the anxiety has mostly subsided and I can walk again, the aches, tingling fingers and toes, iron overload with ferritin levels over 1000 have come down now that my liver is getting glutathione. I paid for blood work every month for a 1.5 years and then cross referenced with my dna. I'm not a health professional in any way, just a stubborn 46 year old man who wants to be the best for his kids and go back to work and enjoy having a purpose again. It's amazing...I'm still in shock.

@@BFS8811 I live in Canada and it's very difficult to get a family Dr, let alone one who can understand chronic conditions as well as understanding genetics or issues with minerals and vitamins. I paid out of pocket for blood work for 15 months and set up a spread sheet for all of my low levels, or high levels., started tracking my levels and then started attending to each one. High Iron: phlebotomies, Low B-12 started injections, low Testosterone ...Trt creams. I figured it was impossible to have 4-6 rare diseases...so started looking into 1-2 things that could cause all of these things. It's my bodies inability to Methylate....1 thing. It's a fast change at first, then a slow rebuild to undo the damage from years of a completely disregulated system. I am able to exercise daily, I still have zero anxiety and am hoping go off of a sari medication in the next few months as I don't think it was ever helping....slow detox.... I am Not a Dr, an ex teacher and producer who just decided that it was up to me to find answers.

@@navyretired230 Hello Sir, I have multiple mutations, homogenized, I am 98% Eastern Europe decent, Germans from Russia. I ordered blood work monthly and charted it so I could follow changes or declines. I asked for all.thyroid tests, male and female hormone levels, b12, vitamin d, liver function, regular blood panel, and Ferritin as my liver had started to crash. I also paid for mineral testing. I now eat a high fat (mostly grass fed beef) high greens diet with very low sugar and NO fortified/ enriched flours or grains..even rice. I stay clear of Folate (it's un unmethylated) which is in sooo many processed foods that I pretty much stopped eating them. All bread and pasta in Canada/USA is a no go, even if it says organic...it then gets "enriched". It's been 4 weeks since going strict and I have not had 1 bout of anxiety, even after having severe ptsd in the past, my brain fog has cleared, adhd symptoms have cleared. I went off of an snri medication and discovered it was not helping at all, also onto consistent morning exercise, testosterone replacement and lots of time in the forest on hikes. I know it sounds crazy, I lost about 7 years of my life, my business, my marriage and nearly my own life to this. I will be grateful everyday now!

Worst part about methylfolate is that people and advisers dont know anything about it, they just wrote that mthfr is needed for synthesis of methylfolate and they are teaching everyone that if you have mthfr then you need to suplement this nutrient. I really encourage to look at study that showed that 3mg of riboflavin lowered homocysteine by 40% in people with mthfr and this is really key nutrient for those people not methylfolate. Methlfolate is methylated god knows how many times everyday and dose that you get from suplement will be transformed into thf in like 1-2 hours after taking and then it isnt different than folic acid that is demonized. In the end i want to write that b2 is key nutrient because it speeds up mthfr and if you got polimorfism then your enzyme need more b2 and even more facinating is fact that such low dose as 3mg will be enough. If you dont notice any improvement in blood homocysteine or your mood then mthfr isnt your problem and you need to dig more into your biochemistry.

Like Rhonda Patrick's mother in law I'm also homozygous for MTHFR ie C677T. I'm in my 50s & not had a problem with blood pressure despite weight gain. It's possibly because my diet's always been high in folate. I have major problems with severe debilitating energy limits though. Methylfolate and other B vits supplementation have made no difference to that. Although I have a lot of other SNPs that play a part in methylation such as many limits on choline. The only supplement that's improved my energy level is Robuvit/French Oak extract and that's only a 15-20% difference. It's been worth taking though because I'm very impaired. I really appreciate all the info both Rhonda and Tim put out about these issues.

RCTs: We're not likely to get any decently sized Randomized Controlled Trials on Folate, because of the expense, which is usually prohibitive, when there's no potential for a profitable patent at the end of the rainbow. @@lindseyenglehart8670 hi I would recommend looking into your child's diet first as sometimes some foods could trigger these things.. as diet gets overlooked allot. However if you feel the diet is fine, and you've confirmed he or she has the gene, then I'd recommend speaking to a doctor to find out what dose would be optimal. As your child is very young 5-6mg does sound quite high. Always best to start off with a small dose then see how they respond to it bit by bit. If you do decide to give the Methylfolate, don't forget TMG and vitamin B12 as these keep things balanced. Remember though, the child is young so high doses are most likely not needed. Good luck 😇

I recently discovered the Walsh Institute and their nutrient balance protocols. Their practitioners (who are usually MDs with a functional medicine/psychiatry focus) seem to prefer methylation blood test panels over the genetic testing so you can actually see how the genes are expressing themselves in the body. Then they tailor the supplements based on those measurable levels, apparently with great results. Scatter bombing the body with Methyl B12 or folate can sometimes make the problems worse.

Are you a HYPERmethylater or a HYPOmethylater? Unless you know this 100%, you can cause severe damage to you methylation pathway if you use merhyls. Methyls are to be used when treating HYPOmethylaters. If a HYPERmethylater, the methyls will build up in the system, therefore firing adrenaline and could cause severe liver issues. Using methyls to treat all methylation issues is a tremendously huge misconception and mistake. Hope this aids you in your journey. MethylFolate is critical for DNA, RNA synthesis (& repair), nucleotide synthesis, RBC synthesis, WBC synthesis, methylation, iron & heme metabolism, as well as for activation of several proteins, neurotransmitters, hormones etc. It is also essential for homocysteine regulation and repair of blood vessels & nerve cells. Those you do Not understand methylfolate well have it in isolation and/or in megadoses without understanding its cofactors & then cite side effects ! Following are the synergestic cofactors of methylfolate :: 1. (Methyl)cobalanin / B12 2. Active B6 - P5P 3. Glycine 4. Active B2 - R5P 5. Magnesium 6. Zinc 7. B3 - Niacinamide 8. Copper 9. Vit C If you are deficient in one / more of above & supplementing folate in isolation esp doses above 400 ucg / day , you are going to have side effects ! If you are overmethylating, you must balance your methyl groups by having Niacin which is a methyl group acceptor & vice-versa. There exists a delicate balance between B3, B6, B9, B12, glycine. Having synthetic Folic acid also disrupts Folate metabolism. I am generally tired of youtubers puting up half baked info & confusing the audience.

The past few years has seen this as quite a trend and so many are making money out of it. I saw a consultant immunologist here where I live in the UK, to ask her if it was possible to check this for me with a blood test. She said there is no blood test that is definitive and you do not have to spend ££££'s on expensive brands of supplements. So many nutritionists etc, claim you can easily test this but unless someone can show me a science based test (that has been trialled and proven), I remain cynical. At least I saw an actual medically trained professor.

I am so confused because I have watched so many videos and read so much about how people with MTHFR should avoid folic acid, but the CDC just came out saying that's not true and we need folic acid, even if you're homozygous for MTHFR, like I am. I just bought a supplement with folate and not folic acid, and now I don't know what I am supposed to do. I had been feeling better eating for folate and taking this new supplement, but CDC makes it seem as though going without folic acid, especially for pregnancy, is super dangerous.
@Stephanie-sy6nw
@Stephanie-sy6nw 3 года назад
Folic acid is the synthetic version of Folate. It's in EVERYTHING and as someone with MTHFR I avoid it at all costs. It's taken me a while to realize how sick it makes me. Our bodies can not break it down, it's too unnatural, and if you have MTHFR it just builds up in your system, it's dangerous for people with MTHFR, especially if you're pregnant or trying to get pregnant. Take the natural form (folate), avoid Folic acid.

Sooo... I think I agree more with Tim than this nice lady. While are a LOT of pattern similarities between humans and "lower" organisms, but we are clearly very different. Even within the human population, gender, age, race, reproductive status, etc. can cause completely different outcomes. This is both the reason why studies on "lower" organisms are indicators of what we should study in humans, and not an indicator of what works on humans, AND the reason challenge tests are so important. If we can get to replicatable double blind challenge tests, then THAT would be awesome.
