Let's fix 5 common mistakes that people make when throwing knees in Muay Thai kickboxing & MMA. The knee is a solid, devastating strike that can do serious damage to the body and head, when done correctly. Make sure you practice them, because they can end fights with a single blow.

I love throwing knees. Only downfall is I have short hamstrings... I've beem working on stretching them (left is shorter than the right) I typically tend to fake out with a one-two (fake right , follow through left jab , following through with either knee within one motion, in a matter of a second) people's reaction time and experience determines a lot when dishing this out. I still need a lot of practice before I can throw heavy knees like you're following through with. My main problem is stopping the energy with the follow through. Like you said "aim for the spine", the follow through is everything. I'm self taught and practice nearly every day, although I still have a long ways to go. Fighting is my forte, and I'm pretty passive. But, it's instinct. I'd enjoy to have a good sparring partner to practice with. Defense, offense, straight forward, technique, follow through, and PRACTICE. I haven't sparred or fought with anyone who can help me gain more experience and momentum in my kickboxing/fighting. Practicing alone can only get you so far. Real life experience can throw you for a loop even if you've had the practice. It's a different story when your adrenaline is pumping, you're nervous, hesitant, angry/, emotional. Conquering your fear and emotion is key to keeping a steady, level head, while fighting with technique is easier said than done. A lot of you can probably relate, as well as a lot cannot. I do not condone fighting for pleasure or for fun. But, when you've got to defend yourself or others it's wise not to walk into something you cannot handle or overcome. Lots of folks say "the bigger they are the harder they fall." I tend to disagree with that statement unless you know what you're doing. I've got my ass kicked by those bigger and some smaller than myself, and I'm pretty small considering. Size isn't everything, though. Wear em out and wait for your opportunity to strike with force. Don't drain yourself before things pop off. You never know what to expect. Mainly due to fighting multiple people at once, at least in my experience. I'm just ranting now... anyways, I wear weighted anklets and practice jabs with 10-20lb weights. Before you know it you'll be tossing hooks, jabs, kicks, knees, etc.,like your picking up paper. There is always room for improvement and learning.

Shane idk if you remember me, I know you have millions lol. But years ago, I started watching your videos when trying to correct my boxing / Muay Thai at way beginner level. Just practicing running miles, shadowboxing and hitting a basketball pole w a pad on it. Using the towel technique, this was when I recently graduated from high school, Fast forward now, I’m at year two of some more intermediate jiu jitsu, Muay Thai, karate, wing chun, wrestling. All the above. The greatest thing I realized was that 1) I no longer watch your videos, this one just came up. I look for more specific things, like pivots on the ankle and such such. The ligament of a knee. 2) is that I’m actually (currently in Mexico practicing in the slums ) but im training at actual gyms. Working my way toward my first amateur fight. (Also watched your video as to when to know when you’d be ready, I am more then ready, excited, I can’t wait to get home, train like an animal. And finally get my shot in the cage. And I can sincerely say, beyond myself, it all started with a video from Fight Tips - tips for the underdog. Love you brotha. Keep up the hard work.

I usually don't use that high guard during the knee, but it feels good! I still default to the Dracula guard just because those up-elbows are so sneaky. Great vid, Shane. You are like a content factory these days! You must be very inspired with these seminars. Keep it up, my friend.

Thank you so much for these vids mate! You have a way of explaining these techniques as well as physically exexute them perfectly from just the right angles many of us instructors that struggle with explanation of technique have quite an issue with explaining things to novices as well as children, your works here make for SO much more efficient means of teaching, I truly appreciate what your doing here, as well as sincerely wish you many blessings for your input to us underdogs, I've learned quite a bit from you and reference you quite often to my own, students. Please keep em coming sir, I wouldn't know how else to explain these techniques if you stopped cause I kinda just do em naturally expecting others to just mimic me lol!.... btw! That's a savagely ferocious spinning heel kick you have, did you train in TKD? Cause it shows.

Agreed my dude. I video my practicing for later review and input from other's as well. As for the long knee, I must use the top portion of the tibia. Why? Because the calcium deposits behind my patella. The motion is similar with the hip trust, except you bring your knee to your chest then forward and slightly down to strike with the tibia. I thank you for all the tips. You rock. I could benefit from sparing with you. Hit me up sometime for a workout.

excellent suggestions. I see the light.if some one is in the puffed up stage of starting a street fight in punch range a knee to to the stomach, throw your hands up against your head defensive posture elbows forward to a void the head punch as an opener, maybe he will catch an elbow with his fist if he swings and if he doesn't maybe that first opener knee will soften him up a bit.In a jail situation the often try to pick the guy up and drop him on his head. That knee may meet a face on the way in...
