Many Americans are looking to move new a city (moving to California anyone?). Many others are looking to buy real estate investment properties. It's important that you BE CAREFUL and do your research before doing so.
The Worst Cities in America are ones that have dangerous crime, struggling economies, and very high home prices and rents. These are places where it is very difficult for home buyers to afford a home. It also difficult for many people to keep a job. Or to stay safe from crime.

7) New York, NY
Are you moving to New York? Then you better hope you have a job already lined up. The unemployment rate across the metro is nearly 8.0%, while NYC has lost its most jobs since the Great Depression. At the same time - more than 70% of pre-pandemic office workers are still working remotely. For this struggling economy you get the benefit of paying nearly 10x your income for a house.
6) Anchorage, AK
The most dangerous city in America in 2019. Not only is Anchorage dangerous, it is dark. In the winter this city only gets 5-6 hours of sun per day. Meanwhile, home prices in Anchorage are actually 10% above the US average, meaning you need to pay a premium for the high crime and lack of sunlight.
5) Albuquerque, NM
Another high crime city, ranking 3rd in violent crime. Thankfully the weather here is better than Alaska. But the local economy is just as mediocre, and real estate isn't that cheap. Turns out the portrayal of Albuquerque in Breaking Bad was accurate.
4) San Francisco, CA
Moving to California? Avoid the most expensive metro in America. The typical price of a home in San Francisco is $1.3 million, more than 17x what the average worker makes. At the same time San Francisco is Top 5 in the US for Property Crime. And it's economy is struggling. Who would want to in the Bay Area?
3) Las Vegas, NV
The Las Vegas strip is normally a fun place. But not over the last 18 months. Heavy lay offs during the pandemic mean that the city is down 8% on its job count while wages have only grown a meager 20% the last five years. Compare that to a 67% increase in home prices, with the typical home now selling for almost $400k.
2) Los Angeles, CA
Anyone moving to California? Los Angeles, the 3rd most expensive large metro in the US has the worst unemployment rate at an eye-watering 9.1%. Meanwhile, the average wage in Los Angeles is a meager $35/Hour, not even close enough to match the insane home prices and rents across the Los Angeles Housing Market.
1) Central Valley, CA (Stockton, Fresno, Bakersfield)
And drumroll...7-8 different metros in California's Central Valley take the #1 spot. These areas are truly unique in 1) how destitute their local economies are, 2) how much crime there is, and 3) somehow they're still expensive. Especially a place like Stockton, where home prices are more than 11x higher than average worker earnings.

I Lived and Worked in Monrovia CA for about 20 years, it's not a bad place to Live, but due to the Home Costs I ended up moving back to Virginia MN., I bought my 3 bedroom Home for $30,000 , a Home like mine in a blue collar area in Monrovia would cost at least $250,000 ... That's why I left...

I lived in Seattle for more than a couple of decades, and wow, it's sad and shocking how much it's decayed (and continues to decay), all while home prices skyrocket. I was surprised it wasn't on your list. The homelessness, crime and drug problems are off the chain. And Portland, OR isn't much better. It seems like the whole west coast is slipping down the tubes, really.

I am sad about washington state. Such a beutiful state. For many Military retirees are starting to move out. Homeless was getting bad, drugs, and crime slowly growing. What bother me the most was the cult people who you have to watch out. And traffic..... sucks is worse than LA

Exactly! I can't wait to leave Seattle! I moved back here, from LA. California in 2015, not knowing I was moving from bad to worse! Seattle use to be one of the finest Cities to live in, starting from the 90's on back! Once they started that WORLD TRADE non-sense (amongst other things, including undocumented immigration) it was all but over for this place, and every year gets worse and worse!

@@solpayne7698 I never ran into any cultists myself, but metro traffic got steadily worse to the point where it was absolutely maddening. It's like LA traffic only with smaller highways. I used to love Seattle but I'm glad I left when I did. Such a shame. I'll miss other parts of WA though, the wild beauty is amazing.

New Yorker here. Couldn’t have said it better. Thank you for considering all nuances and elements of what living in these cities means and not addressing the essentially top 1% who’ll say it’s “not so bad” and “I love it here.” NYC is such a HCOL area, it’s truly outrageous. Blessed to have a job, kept finances steady and sturdy during pandemic and live below my means. So while you can say many are “okay,” so many others are struggling to even survive. It’s sad.

@@jaylewis1383, absolutely. I strongly agree with you. In fact, if not for social media and some news reports, I wouldn’t even know that my city is “in decline”. Walking down the street and riding the subway, I feel as safe as always. Sometimes it seems like there’re some special interests that want us to believe that NYC is irreversible declined. At least theoretically, these can be some Florida real estate brokers who want more people buying their properties, or car dealers who would love people to avoid the subways…. Politicians are a different story. Well-meaning Republican candidates for executive offices, such as Zeldin or Sliwa would describe the current situation as doom-and-gloom to illustrate that they would do a much better job than those currently in power. Which is quite possibly true, as the Democrat leadership has proved to be inept in maintaining law in order in town: the crime rate did go up, after all. But that doesn’t mean it’s literally so terrible and unsafe as to stay away from here. This is an exaggeration that doesn’t reflect reality.

You forgot to mention California's Proposition 47 which allows people to take whatever they want from stores as long as the value does not exceed $1000. Store security and police can't do much about it because the crime has been downgraded from a felony to a misdemeanour.

I can't speak to Detroit and Memphis but St. Louis is absolutely not a bad place to live. The problem with these rankings and lists is that they rely on data on crime, wages, and home prices with zero specific knowledge of the city. Most people don't understand that this data is only applicable to the municipality and many areas that are thought of as part of that city are separate municipalities with their own data. You can see the borders of the municipality by plugging the name of the city into Google Maps. For example, the municipality of St. Louis incorporates most of the depressed neighborhoods of the metro area but excludes many middle class and affluent suburbs. There's a big difference between living in north St . Louis and living in Clayton. Someone moving to one of these cities needs to understand the municipalities and neighborhoods, and to what extent crime and homelessness bleed from one area into others. I can assure you there are many safe, pleasant neighborhoods in St. Louis that are great places to raise children. Also, when talking about high home prices one needs to understand that there has to be demand to keep those prices high. Obviously some people want to buy houses there. Anything we might be missing about NYC or San Francisco while focusing on the negative?

Another thing that should be factored in IMO: Traffic. Cities like LA are absolute nightmares to navigate which effects everyone, but especially the middle class who tend to have to commute from their affordable home in the remote suburbs to a major urban center.

everything is relative, If you run out of gas, break down, or lose your keys, you won't freeze to death, You don't pay for heat or warm clothes. Income, sales, and other taxes like vehicle registration are the deal breakers, Add in electricity, fuel & rent costing DOUBLE as in other places and it becomes unbearable, California used to cost no more than other places and over 50 years it doubled pretty much at a steady pace, Poor governance. I miss the nice clear highways during covid. It is better than it was beforetime, though... office-type jobs went remote during covid, and many companies have allowed employees who don't have to be onsite to continue that in order to cut down on leased office space or to save electricity, and doing staff meetings via Zoom and such. I've noticed the roads are some better than 2019, but... I still wouldn't sign up for a commute downtown; I do cherish my sanity that much.

Lifelong resident of metro Atlanta. Traffic, crime, overcrowding, etc so negatively affected lifestyle we retired westward in a very small rural town in Alabama. It suits us perfectly at this time of life. Zero traffic at any time. Excellent medical services 30 miles away, as well as adequate shopping, dining, entertainment. People are amazingly kind. For quality of life in our late 60s, we couldn't be better off.

I moved to Vegas almost 3 years ago from LA and I was working throughout the whole pandemic... in LA I lived in the hood and now I’m in a way better neighborhood here in Vegas... in the end all cities have their good areas and bad... make the best of what you have and where you’re at... good wishes y’all wherever y’all are or where y’all are going, take care

I moved out of S.F. years ago, and went north. My elderly parents lived in VISALIA, and about 15yrs ago had their car stolen while grocery shopping in a supermarket near their home. Car was found abandoned in FRESNO (50 miles away) about 3 days later, interior was trashed and damaged. It is really bad everywhere now-a-days Thanks for the video, was very interesting.

As a Californian, you cannot underestimate what the state wide drought has done to the Central Valley. There are people who literally don't have water for plumbing their homes--ground wells have dried up and the agricultural allocations are way above residential. I'm in the South Bay, and we're on very strict rationing at unbelievable prices. We're always under our allocation and still pay over 150 dollars for water a month. Combine this with crazy food prices (Not kidding: 4 potatoes cost us 7.00 this week, butter is well above 5 dollars a pound as just an example), and it's a squeeze for the middle class.

Now that, Thank God, CA got a shag load of rain this winter, perhaps that will buy us some time to get desalination programs funded and organized (fingers crossed--I don't know how it is in CO, but here, I have little faith in the legislature), so that plumbing water/farming water is supplemented in the future.

As a former resident of LA (3 years, that was enough!) Las Vegas (13 years and that was when the economy crashed and I lost 75% of the value of my house), never again! I have lived overseas in Jakarta, still do, and have a small place stateside in the midwest surrounded by old mountains, rivers, lakes. I have nice neighbors that watch out for each other. My home in the states has been empty for 6 to 8 months a year, and not a thing was ever stolen. For me, this is truly home. Wish all the best......we will need it.

Hi Nicholas. I appreciate your analysis, but with home prices and incomes, it's important to use the MEDIAN (not AVERAGE) in order to see what's typical. Averages are deceptive because a tiny percentage of very high-income individuals (and pricey properties) will pull the average far higher than the median value for such categories. This is why the National Association of Realtors (and economists) compare MEDIAN home prices with MEDIAN incomes compare home affordability across metros.

It's easy to ridicule California's Central Valley but we need it for our food. Agriculture is vital for our economy. Trust me, you do not want to be a country that depends on imports for food. Export countries will stop exporting if/when there is a world-wide food shortage (which does happen). The domestic agriculture industry is part of what makes it possible for the sexier industries like tech to be so prosperous. Nothing works unless you have enough food. Food security is still the bedrock of human civilization.

Thanks for the comment! Totally agree with you regarding food security. To me the biggest issue with Central Valley is how expensive home prices are, which is largely related to state-wide government rules/regulations (in my opinion).

Yeah. Just look at mask exports stopping abruptly during the pandemic. France literally seized all the masks being produced in their country meant for export to Germany which were already paid for! There was absolutely no respect to export obligations which China did more than any country of course. When the global supply chain stops, it's every country for themselves. I'm from Fresno County and moving back to Central Cali because my family are all still there. They will never leave and are predominately doing quite well, especially my brother who is a master mechanic for a dealership. I'm the only one of my siblings with a bachelor's degree yet my siblings make as much if not way more than I have (my mechanic brother namely) working in the trades. Years ago I strategically started building passive income through real estate here in AZ. I will transfer my investments back to crazy Central Cali because it's still a good area to be a landlord as much as it is anywhere because folks have to rent. I didn't get ahead financially because of my college education. I got ahead because of timing the housing market which I continue to do. Central Cali keeps this country alive, and those of us from the region know that personally. It's one of the largest if not the largest commercial agricultural region in the world with absolutely the greatest variety of crop production. My father died from his lifelong career working in commercial ag in Central Cali to feed and clothe this country. It's not for the faint-of-heart or huevones. The unemployment rate is high in the region because the predominant industry is commercial ag which is an industry of specific periods of unemployment, especially Winter. There is some effort to make Fresno a tech hub. It's a hard sell yet it may succeed. If I didn't have a small child and so much family still holding strong in Central Cali, I would just leave the country altogether because there isn't anywhere attractive for me to live with my child anymore in this country other than the crazy state I'm from.

Lots of land in the CV is fallow due to lack of water. NAFTA shifted a lot of food production to Mexico. When he puts down the CV he’s calling out housing and mall developers, not necessarily farmers.

We visited San Francisco last summer and it was really beautiful place. However, there are a lot of dodgy area there and the locals warn us to never leave anything in the car. We witnessed some crimes here and there while walking outside. It's unfortunate that a beautiful place ended up like that

We were traveling to SF for vacation. We planned to stay for a week. We booked the motel with inside parking. The hotel told us not to leave and valuables in the car. Next day morning, a suv parked next to us was busted. We decided to leave the city but would like to have gourmet foods and sightseeing in the city. However, we became hostages ourselves. We were afraid of leaving our car not just the smash and grab but open day robbery. At the evening, we drove to Reno. Never at never, but I didn’t leave my heart on SF. It is a place not for human to live.

As someone who lives in Stockton, I'm not surprised. 10 years ago, my rent for a luxury apartment was $725... today, it is at $1800. Wtf?! With that said, I've grown to love this city, at least the northern west area, which is the bougie area of Stockton. Anywhere below that really dangerous or expensive and I would never visit.

I have lived in Las Vegas now for 19 years. I moved from California due to high rent back then and I agree with one the comments a person made, you make the best out of it. I basically like living in LV. It’s grown a lot now. You have to visit here and see for yourself. You stay safe by being aware of your surroundings. That’s anywhere you live in America. Thank you for doing this study! As a San Franciscan, you are "right on" about everything you say! San Francisco is strictly for the rich and the middle class is just not comfortable here! The city is now "the city of the homeless." The rate of car break ins is astounding. Freeway shootings are rampant to the extent that I don't travel the freeways anymore! We need to do something about the "homeless" because they are not all "drug addicts."

Lived in San Francisco in the early eighties. I consider myself fortunate. We were living a rather nomadic existence. (traveling around the country in a homemade camper van). I was 30, husband 47, daughter 8. Grandparents lived in the Tenderloin. We lived near the coast. ( temporary apartment). Two good jobs ( construction/ teacher). Daughter in school temporarily. On weekends we camped on Dillon Beach. During the week we celebrated in Ghirardelli Square, comedy night, play at the Orpheum, swimming in the bay, visiting grandparents on roller skates with backpacks full of change of clothes, toys, books, gifts for gma and gpa. Sorry you guys missed it. It was fun.

I had to live in California's Central Valley while in the military. It was a town called Marysville, north of Sacramento (a bit outside of the area discussed here). And it was exactly as described. Moreover, while some of the places listed here, especially NYC, have an overwhelming array of things to see and do, the Central Valley is nearly devoid of culture. I met far more rude, stupid, ignorant, obnoxious people there than in any other place I've ever been, and I've visited 38 countries on five continents. The ONLY people who live there permanently are those who cannot make it anywhere else. The only good thing was the sunny Mediterranean-type climate. Another feature is that the cost of living there is the lowest in California (making it very attractive to people on welfare). The day I left that dump, never to return, was among the happiest in my life.

Homeless, high crime and high prices could be said about the entire west coast. Portland is on track to break their all time record for homicides. Seattle is bad too. Other cities in the west like Boise, SLC and Austin are clearly in bubble territory.

Portland and Seattle have pretty low violent crime rates. Look at the ranking of cities by violent crime rates per capita. Nowhere in the PNW is anywhere near the top. The most dangerous cities are in the south and midwest. Places like St. Louis, Little Rock, Memphis, New Orleans, Detroit, even Nashville has higher crime per capita than Chicago.

Add on top of all this, California's water shortages, overreaching mandates, and maybe a small issue, but indicative of the mindset there, the governor just signed into law a complete ban in the sale of small gas powered engines to be put in place in the next couple of years. This doesn't affect only homeowners, but maintenance facilities, landscapers, people who use generators for, you name it. Makes a lot of sense to have a battery powered generator!! It will make people all the more dependant on the big utility companies. Heaven forbid you should desire to be self sufficient.

I had gotten, an address to use, and all. I began to process of transferring everything over from Atlanta, GA to Los Angeles. I didn't finish THANK GOD. I have my CDL so I got hired on with LACMTA driving their City Bus, & they only wanted to pay me $20/hour. I ran fast back to Atlanta, GA. One of my coworkers is from Bakersville, CA. I live in Fresno, CA in a nice neighborhood in North Fresno and I have to deal with homeless people coming closer and closer by the month. Not only are they homeless but many of them are walking around high as a kite. Traffic on the 99 and 41 is ridiculous and our roads are terrible. Most of Fresno is ugly and there aren't many high end stores that come to Fresno. Wages here have definitely NOT kept up with the cost of living. MY household income is $140k, no kids, no debt, and I'm not rich so that says a lot about how high cost of living really is compared to wages. I honestly don't know how people survive on less than 100k per year with kids!

Sadly Fairbanks in Anchorage used to be very safe and actually pretty profitable. The price of living is so high because they were getting paid way more up there. My uncle and Aunt lived there while my uncle just recently passed away but anyway my uncle was making like $60 an hour his wife was making like $40 an hour. They had a beautiful home but they were also having to spend thousands of dollars like every month of the winter for propane to keep warm because the electricity goes out all the time from all the cold. So yeah it wasn't always like that sad situation

@@johnboehmer6683 well I’ve lived in anchorage and it’s really not all that bad, it all depends who you are, I hate sunlight, soooo I had no problem with the long nights actually loved it and coming from somewhere with extreme heat, and the cold doesn’t bother me you get used to it, and the crime is just like any other city, just don’t be an idiot and stay out of places that are bad but again it’s all who you are, worst thing I will say is the cost of living the prices are a decent amount higher on everything and especially apartments but overall it’s a beautiful place and awesome for any outdoorsy people, and don’t worry about the sunlight you’ll get more than enough in the summer

Its always better to go off median hourly wage, not average, to see what the average everyday american makes, ironically the median salary is currently 24 dollars a hour. Some of these cities are doing irreversable damage to their economy. Anybody who is paying attention to trends should know what cities will have healthy economies in the future. Hint: look at the age demographics of cities.

Another thing that sucks about the Central Valley at least specifically Stockton is that gets really really really hot there. One thing that really sucks about San Francisco getting really expensive is that my hometown of Santa Rosa which I've lived in my whole life has gotten more and more expensive for a few reasons but one of the reasons is a lot of people from San Francisco are moving up here in bringing up the cost of living. Santa Rosa doesn't have the necessary wages to cover how expensive it's getting here.

I spent a year in Bakersfield setting up a couple of distribution centers. One day I got pulled over in a rental driving up from LAX. When I told the cop I was going to Bakersfield he said “why?” when I said it was for work he apologized and got back in his cruiser. I got to experience a dust storm, the smell of oil in the morning, Walmart, witness multiple arrests and Oildale. They’ve got some decent food though. Not a bad place to be with an unrestricted food budget. I ate Salty’s BBQ in a dust storm on more than one occasion

Really interesting video. Wow, Cental Valley CA., Anchorage and Albuquerque weren't even on my list of guesses. All of the others were. I've been to L.A. quite a few times, but I won't even go there anymore. I just can't understand how anyone can stand the crowding and traffic. I guess a lot of the traffic is commuters living far outside the city to get lower housing costs. San Francisco is my favorite city to visit but I could never afford to live there. Even food costs are outrageous. I visit Las Vegas almost every year, but I would be afraid they are going to have a water problem sooner of later, I also couldn't stand the heat and dust storms if I lived there. I've given thought to living in some of these places but quickly eliminated them for some of the same reasons you stated. Looking forward to the Best Cities list.

I live in merced and this is spot on houses going for 400k here up 500k and no high paying jobs. Most house that are bought are from investors who rent the homes out to UC Merced students. Which is causing rent to skyrocket

As a Seattleite I am baffled as to how Seattle didn't end up on this list. It's by far one of the worst places to live, the people are mean, there's homeless EVERYWHERE, Drug addicts pushing heroine on almost every corner, Crime is through the roof, Homeless camps under almost every overpass, Sky high cost of living, outrageous rental fees to live in one of the nastiest areas. I've had the displeasure of living in and around Seattle my entire life. Seriously, don't come here. The City street layout is an absolute nightmare, the traffic is god awful. The only other place I can think of that has just as bad if not worse traffic is LA or central to southern Cali in general.

I lived in Anchorage for two years and almost died there due to lack of jobs and high prices. Evil place! Suicide and domestic violence rates are sky high.

If you're not in the hood detroit isn't bad. Downtown and the suburbs are relatively affordable and good places to live. Lots of stuff, food, sports, events, low COL, etc. But yeah if you're in a super dangerous part it's not going to be a good place to live.

You forgot to put Seattle, WA on your list as the most expensive place to live and homelessness as well. I don't know too much about crime there but it's was one of the cities I want to move to before I knew about the high cost of living!

Seattle is a decaying cesspool of crime and drug addiction. If you venture outside, be careful to sidestep the human feces, needles and syringes. And if you need police help, good luck to you. They are mostly absent, and those who remain have hands that are tied by idiotic laws that coddle the criminals. Stay away!

The crime is bad as well, homeless all over and under every bridge, cars get broken into, prostitution and the crimes it attracts spilled out of downtown and close to neighborhoods, rent and home pricing is extremely high. Many smaller business closed during Covid. I was born here and have seen changes in the past 10 years escalated and don’t go to many area’s here now due to crime.

As someone that lives in Vegas, I want to leave so so bad. It’s getting so dangerous. Plus everyone I know, including myself, have either have a car stolen or hit and ran here. Insurance rates here are so bad because of people like that.

He left out a big one folks... Cleveland Ohio at age 63 I worked and played in Cleveland most of my life. It is now the fifth most dangerous city in the country and I just laid off 154 cops.

Born and raised in Stockton CA. I went to college and worked in Southern California for 20 years. And now I’m back. If you’re set on living somewhere, forget this list and figure out how to do it. You’ll have to make compromises here and there. The Central Valley offers affordable housing to those that have jobs in the Bay Area. And many make that long commute from Stockton, Modesto, etc., every day, Monday through Friday. The same goes for those that work in Los Angeles. They commute from as far as Riverside, CA. Crime is everywhere. Do your research before you move to a particular neighborhood.

Would love to hear your opinion about Arizona and the impact that massive migration there will have on water resources and eventually real estate, when water shortages start affecting daily life and food production; which is already happening. I foresee a reverse migration to the Midwest and east coast in the near future.

I loved San Francisco to visit but never, ever to live. It is nice to say that I was able to visit New York (years & years ago). Only been to Las Vegas once as a teenager and visited LA once or twice, again a long time ago. I had to laugh when you showed #1. Grew up in Stockton & Fresno and always felt safe but just went back to Stockton a few months ago after 20+ years and it was totally different. Didn't feel safe especially after dark and the homeless population was awful. I will not be taking any more trips down memory lane there. Never been to the rest of the cities but also have no interest in going to any of them. Thank you very much for your perspective.

My son lives in NYC and every time he comes home to my small town, he is happy because of the peace and quiet and my house is clean (his roommates are pigs. He cleans the place only for them to make it so dirty again. Their bathroom especially, is gross). In NYC, he tends to do video recordings of the rats that he sees around the city. 🤣🤣🤣

He is an award winning hairstylist, he gets millions of likes on his Tik Tok, NYC is the center of it and his mentor is happy that he is there, since there are more opportunities for him. He is making so much more there even though he is not yet the fully booked stylist he was here, since he is still starting in NYC (here, it was very hard to get an appointment with him). By living in NYC, he is close to the Redken Exchange (he is Redken certified),

I've lived in 2 of the cities on this list but not at all surprised that the central valley made it to #1. Although there are good people I know from there and I would never want to talk badly about their home but the two years I was there were so depressing. I have never really experienced that kind of depression that was influenced solely by the city itself. In Fresno alone there's an overwhelming feeling of oppression/depression over the entire area and I never really felt all that secure or safe when out on my own. Its like people have just given up and no one really seems to take pride in where they live. The amount of dead dogs and cats I would see just left to rot on the side of the highway or in residential areas in the boiling hot sun was shocking and would immediately ruin my day. I had never seen that before in my life. Many of the streets and homes were so dirty that I hated leaving the place I lived just because I knew I would have to see so much trash filling the streets in certain parts of town where people would just use it as their personal dumping ground for old furniture/mattresses/trash etc. There are good things about it but I would choose any other city on this list before going back to the central valley.

@@jess-ica7627 Detroit obviously. Flint is another. Saginaw and Inkster. Warren maybe. I mean Michigan didn't get dubbed "murder mitten" for no reason. Maybe add Pontiak and Mt. Clemens. Clinton Township. There are good parts in all of the cities I mentioned but they're still pretty dangerous
