I do love Scotty and watching every single video that he makes and uploads here on RU-vid. Ninety-some odd percent of the time I am in total agreement with what he has to say about what vehicles are poor crappy quality and which ones are not. With that said, I do agree that Kia made some big mistakes/ design flaws with the mechanical aspects of this car. However, comparing it to an equivalent year 2012 Toyota Prius isn't exactly what I consider to be a "fair" comparison. The Prius debuted in 2001 whereas the Kia Optima hybrid was introduced in 2011. Hmmm... Maybe after Kia has manufactured their hybrid vehicles they will be just as reliable in 10 years too. Point is, the Prius had ongoing development going on 10 years before this hybrid Optima ever came out. Maybe they're doing what Toyota has been known to do... They see problems with any one of their cars and they tinker and make them better and better as the years go by... Kia and Hyundai have had WAY too many customers and critics alike rate several of their vehicles consistently high for them to be "complete piles of junk". Toyotas are great, Lexus' are great, Hondas are great, and even Acura is great too. But, I firmly believe that Korean manufacturers such as Kia and Hyundai have been gradually and continuously upgrading their products over the years so that they're much better and reliable too. For instance, I've seen WAY too many dissatisfied 2018-2020 Toyota Camry consumer ratings due to both mechanical and aesthetic problems vs the same years of the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima. I think you just have to be careful what type of engines and transmission combination you pick because as Scotty has mentioned many times turbo engines do tend to wear out quicker vs a naturally aspirated engine. I'm not being critical just pointing out observations is all. Keep uploading great videos Scotty!

Actually the warranty was extended to 120k since the problem is so wide spread. I just hope I can get another 97k outta the motor as I expect my cars to last atleast to 200k

I don't have a Kia but I do have a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. Luckily I've never had any issues with my own vehicle (I baby it) but I have never had a car with soo many recalls because of this same engine. I think Its at 13 recalls now. Some ridiculous number. Once my warranty is up I'm getttinf rid of it A.S.A.P.

I've sold at least a few new 2018 Hyundai Sonatas with regular, non-hybrid 4 cylinder engines to folks who hadn't even had their new ride for a week before their car went into limp mode because of metal shavings breaking away inside their engines. The pile of engines in the corner of the shop floor during the recall in 2019...ohhh, it still gives me chills! This was a big reason I quit my Hyundai salesman job. I was selling junk! To pay any kind of money for a new Hyundai and then it blows up! Worse yet, when Hyundai provided rental cars for free to folks who's new car engines blew, Hyundai would set them up with a rental car: you might have to drive around for over a month in a garbage Nissan Sentra while at the same time your first payment on a bank note upwards of $21K+ would be coming due on a car you couldn't even drive! Atrocious engines still not fixed in 2018 and doubtfully better in the newly redesigned 2020 models which are already having problems with their Smart Park systems!

I had a 2014 Kia Optima Sxl turbo and I haven't had issues with it. It only has 34k miles and came from a good dealer with warranty forever.

I had one too, same 2014 SX Turbo, around 75k miles it started giving all sorts of issues. The pano roof kept making noises that no amount of music can drown out. Dealer replaced entire thing under warranty, in a few months the sounds came back. Dealer was giving me a lot of issues to replace again. The noise was driving me insane. I went through 3 sets of tail lights. Water kept getting in them and killing the LEDs. Seat warmers broke. Dealer replaced under warranty. Rattles in the seats kept happening, dry grease fixed the seat rattles. The shark fin antenna few off one day, car wash might have knocked it off, never had this happen to any car before this one. Dealer fixed it again under warranty. Brake noise issues, no matter what breaks and rotors I put on the car, the breaks would squeal extremely loud. Most of the issues got fixed under warranty but the amount of time my car stayed with the dealer was too much. It was a nightmare. Never had the engine issue though. Now I have a Lexus ES, I will never buy another kia again....maybe lease..but never buy.

2011 EX 2.4L made in Korea. Not many issues outside bad luck with several fender benders. Had to replace (I think it was) steering coupling a year or some ago. Also had some issues with remote start. Engine got some gunk buildup and had to be flushed a year ago. But for the most part pretty solid and reliable.

Ah idk about this. I bought my 15 Sorento new and the engine is under lifetime warranty 2.4 GDI. I racked up 178k on the first one then they replaced the engine for free at 178k with a brand new engine not a used one. I now have 212k and its still doing good. They don't install used engines they install a new engine.

Kia launched its first hybrid (Optima hybrid along with the Sonata hybrid) in 2011. They did not sell many hybrids when it was first launched. Therefore, the parts cost more than a Toyota Hybrid. Since it was their first hybrid car, a lot of the technology wasn't perfected - as Scotty says "don't buy the first year model". The Optima hybrid is similar to a Camry for its size and not a Prius. Also, the replacement engines involved in Hyundai/Kia recall are NOT used. They're new engines built and shipped from Korea. Please have your facts straight before you start bashing about Kia.

The motors in the recall are made in Alabama. My replacement motor already has a minor oil leak, and my oil level goes up after a few thousand miles (indicating that fuel is diluting it). No way this motor is "new", and at best it was "remanufactured".

MattPSU02 no they aren’t. The replacement ones often come from overseas (Korea) that’s why cars are down for up to a month or more waiting on a engine replacement and you have to get a loaner car... yes they make them in Alabama but from most of the experiences people have said... they say the engine has to be shipped from overseas. Specifically the hybrid ones because all hybrids from Hyundai motor group are always made in Korea and have a very high Percent of Korean made parts content.

@@zabryant01 I'd take a photo of my engine's identification sticker, but Hyundai buried it in a spot that's not easy to access. Furthermore, I know from personal experience that it is difficult to export something to Asia, rework the product, then import it back into the US. The tariffs and paperwork on that are an incredible pain, if the government even lets you do it. Perhaps the hybrid motors are remanufactured in Korea, but not the others. The reason for the 1+ month wait is because

MattPSU02 yes the hybrid stuff is all Korean made typically anything that doesn’t sell in high amount or are luxury are only Korean made and have a massive amount 80-98% Korean parts content. But from others experience the dealers tell them the engine has to be shipped from overseas and then further proceed to give them a loaner depending on the dealer and how shitty or not shitty they are.

Most of the elantra's and sonatas are very reliable. My whole family owns Hyundai's all naturally aspirated engines 2 of them are 200,000 kms+ still everything stock from engine to tranny but yeah when they have new technology I think it's more of a gamble...

@@ThatWanderingNomad I appreciate your insight and response. I'm very curious to see how all the tech in these brand new 2021 models are going to fair over in a few years. Kia/Hyundai are obviously doing a massive marketing push with tons of brand new models this year. They've said themselves they're going to act like a tech company and create a "start up" mentality. My only concern is...cars are meant to last for a 10+ years. Not 1 to 3 years like an iPhone.

@@kenedtsu Totally agree cars are meant to last. 2020 Sonata has a turbo engine and the engine too is different as it has some new type of Intake. I would not suggest anyone to fall for this. But the good thing about Hyundai is that they keep pushing and perfecting their products. You always buy tested products so I would suggest wait for couple of years before deciding on a new Hyundai. But you can always get current gen elantra with naturally aspirated engine and manual or automatic and they work pretty well. Of course like anything maintaining it is the key.

My sister had a boyfriend who worked at KIA and tried to sell her a new 2017 Optima hybrid and trade in her 2015 Camry SE because it didn’t get very good mpg. Well she took that as a hint and dumped him. One year later, the new 2018 Camry’s arrived and she traded her 2015 Camry SE for a 2018 Camry hybrid SE. She drives with a led food and still gets 40+ mpg!!!! Toyota hybrid systems are mind blowing, much better than KIA hybrid

@@RichGarciaTv I did on my 2016 Optima SX. It Has a better interior, exterior, and redesigned engine compared to the one scotty is talking about so everything has improved. MSRP on the Moroni that came with the car was $32,000 and change. I paid $17,500 and it was a Kia certified lease program car. I couldnt be happier! Cheaper than the Cobalt Coupe I bought new senior year, about 1000% better of a car too lol

I know a couple of people with stingers. Not very old yet but (2 years give or take), but are very nice cars to drive, look good, and so far no issues whatsoever. Nothing to indicate it isnt a quality engineered car.

Scotty is right about the Kia engines I bought a brand new 2016 Hyundai Sonata changed the oil with mobile 1 every 5000 miles at 40,000 miles I burned 3 quarts of oil in 5000 miles

So true, Scotty! KIA still has issues and as far as "rebuilt engines" there are a lot of people, because of auto-ignorance, that get taken advantage. I think everyone just needs to watch your videos and completely stop those crooked dealers and other shops in their tracks. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.

Kee-ah-yoon-Hon-dye. Korean for “you sit at side of road, long time, Joe”. (Sorry. I couldn’t resist). When these cars came across the west side pond, in large numbers, I looked at them the same way I view all southeast Asian invasive species, like Kudzu, snakehead fish, carp, zebra mussels, Asian borer beetles, Asian trampsnail.....the list goes on and on. Came over, made a great initial appearance, undersold more quality, and idiots bought them....and soon cursed them. Now....they are absolutely everywhere. Great video, Scotty.

As much as I like Kia, the Optima & the K5, the hybrid variant of the Optima's of & around that year, were bad, Sonata's too. However, it's obvious why people spent $500 more for these than the Prius. The Optima is a much bigger car, in a higher class as well, compact vs midsize.

@@ccllvn in 2012 I would of agreed with you, but now, that's a negative. About the same output, quality, length, nice futuristic designs, but the Kia's value, which again, has caught up in quality & even getting there in bluebook value, is just unbeatable. Even in 2012, as far as gasoline models go, the Kia all the way, Toyota had recalls that killed tons in 2010, just 2 years before the year in question. During that timeline, 2012, the Kia's just suffered from terrible bluebook value.

@@p6fd1 wrong again, I've had 3 Toyota's, 2 of them were fine, but I've had 4 Hyundai/Kia's & never had a single issue & I drove the crap out of them. I've also had 4 Honda's, 1 which had timing issues, 1 with electric issues & another which the engine was going out & on the way to the junk yard, the transmission went out!

Thank you so much! 👍 Hate going to stealerships, with their "recommended" services. But not required. I got quoted for a new water pump and rear main seal for $3000+ a year later, I don't have any leaks and my water pump is fine.

Had an 09 Optima with the 4 cylinder. Non hybrid, and non GDI. 160k trouble free miles before trading in. Surprised to see the engine trouble on that car unless they are not maintaining or dogging it or both. Nice looking cars though.

Hyundais and KIAs are 12 to 13 year life span cars on the average. You'll be amazed how man your fellow Texan crushes on his RU-vid channel Cowboy Car Crushing vs when a Toyota gets crushed it's usually over 20 years old.

Its a hybrid kia optima? Also, not all kia Optima hybrids will blow up, its just has a relatively high probability of doing so. Not all Toyota Camry's will last forever, they just have high probability of lasting forever

Anyways all I’m saying is that style is one major thing this has over the Prius, as Scotty was comparing the two in the video. I would much rather a Prius because of way better reliability of course, and was sarcastic with the ellipsis if that makes sense
