Have you dislocated your shoulder before? Do you know anyone who has?
I know someone who I used to play basketball with back in the day who can pop his shoulder back in when he dislocates it while we play. This used to make me queasy when I saw him do it.
A dislocated shoulder can be a very painful injury when the joint is out of place. But when it is popped back in, the pain goes away immediately like magic.
If left untreated, this can happen again. A lot of times, it does. The ligaments supporting the shoulder are damaged and if the key muscles around the shoulder are not strengthened, the shoulder becomes and remains unstable.
There is one particular movement that causes the shoulder to dislocate most of the time. This is even if you have never dislocated your shoulder before.
Martial arts practitioner uses this movement to dislocate the opponent's shoulder.
In this video, I will show you what this movement is. It is best to be careful with this movement.

Thank you for this. I just fell and either dislocated or subluxation of shoulder. X-ray shows no breaks or dislocation. In sling and just trying to avoid bad movements before I can get into ortho for follow up. This is helpful! More ideas appreciated. First timer.

I'm sorry to hear that you dislocated your shoulder Roxanne. I recommend using ice to control your pain and inflammation, getting your range of motion back as quickly as possible using exercises such as pendulum exercises, wand exercises and then start strengthening using isometrics and progressing to working on the pectoral muscles and internal rotator of the shoulder. You can search my channel on how to do these exercises. Hope this helps.

Hi, thank you for this video. I had a shoulder dislocation with massive pain (I think a small bone in the front of the shoulder was broken) around 10 years ago. I got only physiotherapy, no operation. I'm 53 now and I have no issues with my shoulder since I'm still careful with it, however I was wondering if I'm allowed to do pushups? I haven't done any since the accident, thank you.

Good to hear that your shoulder healed well Oussama! This is a great question. Yes, you can do push ups with a modification. I recommend not letting your elbow go past your shoulder when going down. You will not be able to get all the way down to the floor but it will be safer for your shoulder. Hope this helps.

I have had what I assume is a subluxation a few times over the years. I do wrestling and bjj but recently had this injury occur. Would I be able to still do these sports or no?

Good question @callsignpizza. It depends on how stable you can get your shoulder to be. If the muscles can get strong enough to support your shoulder, you can get back to sports. The concern in your case is you mentioned that it has happened before. The more the injury occurs, the looser the shoulder gets. And in that case, surgery may be an option. If it comes to that, after the rehab, you will be able to go back to wrestling and bjj. I wish you the best. 🙏

Dear Uzma, as long as your shoulder feels unstable in this position, you want to avoid that movement. Strengthen your rotator cuff and pectoral muscles to make the shoulder more stable and prevent future dislocations. Hope this helps.

Sir when i was 17 i dislocated my shoulder and was relocated by using elbow reduction method by doctor for 30 days sling Physio therapy is done now im 18 but there is slight pain Like i really dont want to dislocate my shoulder again any useful tip to get full range of motion like i can lift horizontal vertical but camt do single rotation

I'm sorry to hear this @user-rq1yg7oj7n. I recommend watching my other video on shoulder exercises to prevent shoulder dislocation. Doing those will help strengthening your shoulder and lessen the chance of future dislocations.

Good question @rojanatalay6217. Shoulder mobility does not cause nor prevent dislocation. You can have good mobility without dislocating the shoulder if the muscles supporting it are strong and it is not in the position where it can dislocate easily. Hope this helps.

Good question @arunv1909. Once the shoulder is fully healed, make sure the muscles supporting your shoulder (such as pectorals, rotator cuff, serratus anterior) are very strong to prevent further dislocations. Your shoulder can dislocate again even when it is healed if these muscles are weak. I hope this helps.

Hello I'm currently following your videos on shoulder injury because 2 years before my shoulder joint popped out of socket while i held a bad with same position you told to avoid 😅 but within 15 seconds it popped back in i visited the doctor and physio sessions after that my shoulder was fine but while i was working out and warming up shoulder joint i felt a bit instability in that joint and while circling from elbow the same shoulder popping out and in happened i know its a huge comment but i wanted to ask what are my options should i need more physiotherapy or should need surgery because after that incident i didn't have any loss in range of motion or instability.

Good question @hiteshrajput4876. If it keeps popping out repeatedly, in my opinion surgery will be needed. If not and you don't put your shoulder in that position much, you can do physio and focus on strengthening your rotator cuff and pectoral muscles to stabilize your shoulder. I hope this helps.

@@restorepluspt thanks for the advice, i consulted with a ortho and they told me that there may be a slight tear at membrane supporting shoulder and they asked to let it rest for couple days and then go for a MRI scan so will conclude if to do surgery or avoid putting shoulder in that critical position. Because the shoulder worked fine and i was doing exercises with no issues 👍🏻

Is it possible to get back to this movement after healing and strengthening (no surgery)? This movement is a part of the overhead smash for many racket sports so wanted to see if I cannot do this ever again

Good question @kabnis2022. Yes it is possible depending on the severity of your injury. If you dislocated it once, with proper strengthening, the chances of you getting back to doing overhead smash is high. If it is repeated dislocations already, it is still possible but the chances goes down. Check out the video I created for the exercises on how to prevent shoulder dislocation. I hope this helps.🙏

I Dislocated my shoulder 3 months but this movement doesn’t feel unstable just really tight after I stretch my shoulder in this movement my shoulder feels unstable should I stop stretching and loss movement in the shoulder

Good question @rojanatalay6217. You don't have to lose this movement. I would avoid it if your shoulder is unstable. Focus on strengthening the rotator cuff and pectoral muscles to prevent your shoulder from dislocating easily in the future. You can check out my other video where I showed some exercises you can do. I dislocated my shoulder 3 times last one was 1.5 years ago and recent one was 5 days back 😢. My shoulder feel kinda jammed from upper side like someone is holding it. And I am not able to hold it in air for too long . What treatment or excresies will you suggest to fix this , I am 18 years old and can't afford a surgery 😢 and I don't wanna spend rest of my life with this weak and painful shoulder

I'm sorry to hear this @Atul7Singh. I highly recommend strengthening your shoulder to prevent the dislocation from happening again. Check out my other video where I showed some exercises for that. In the meantime, I suggest icing your shoulder and start with some gentle range of motion exercises to gradually recover you mobility. I have some videos of those exercises as well in my channel. When the shoulder is better, then add the strengthening exercises. I hope this helps.🙏

Good question @bhaskarsingh7328. Shoulder dislocation heals in 3-4 months. I recommend avoiding this position during that time. I also recommend avoiding this position until you strengthen key muscles around your shoulder- pectorals, rotator cuff to prevent re-dislocation.

Had labrum surgery years ago . Shoulder still comes out every 2-3, months training mma . I'm sore for a few days and I get right back training no sling . Prehab everyday after training . I've noticed I get back to normal quicker not having it isolated in the sling . Trying to squeeze 2 fights in this year before I get another labrum surgery .

Wow sorry to hear this @jeremiahneal9053. MMA is a tough sport especially with an injury like yours. You are right that you bounce back quicker without sling. Also, because it is a recurrent dislocation, your body is able to cope with the injury better. Check out the video I created on exercises for shoulder dislocation. With the demand of your sport, you will need progressions of those exercises but the foundation/principles will still be the same. Good luck on your fights.🙏

@restorepluspt luckily Doc said my rotator cuff is super strong and doesn't seem like I'm injuring anything when the dislocations happen . Never feel unstable just cannot abduct and externally rotate or its over

Sorry to hear that @shubhamgawade6538. I suggest sleeping with a body pillow or a big pillow will work. Hug it so that your arm will be across your chest. This will prevent your shoulder from going into the abduction and external rotation position where the shoulder is prone to dislocate. I also suggest working on key muscles of your shoulder to prevent it from dislocating again. Check out my video about that. Hope this helps.🙏

Hello, I have done MRI of my dislocated shoulder. Following are the points mention in report. 1. Hill Sachs lesion with associated marrow edema along posterolateral head of humerus. 2. Tear of the antero-inferior glenoid labrum extending into the superior labrum, from 6 o'clock position to 11 o'clock position with stripped off periosteum Can you please suggest that surgery is needed in this situation or will physiotherapy be effective?
